Of course it will all come down to if I feel I can handle a long one when the time comes.

"Ooooh, Matron!"  :hysterical:  You should be so lucky, Pete!  :tease:

As great as Once Upon a Time in the West is, I wouldn't start out with it. Start with The Big Country, it had a good story and it's not too long.

I know Pete already said this, but I did wonder. The Big Country is Massive! I recommended Once Upon A Time In The West because it's possibly the most cinematic film ever made, so although it's lengthy, it flows beautifully and is a unique experience that everyone should dive into. Achim's post perfectly sums it up! But maybe if you are still worried about the time, Pete, you could consider one of the other Waynes, like Big Jake or The Cowboys. You'd enjoy those after Rio Bravo.

I adore The Searchers, but I avoid recommending it to Western newbies, because I think it works better when you understand what a typical John Wayne western is like and you then see why The Searchers is a different beast.

I don't see many westerns...so I'm not someone good to give recommendations for this type of thing.

That being said...I did like True Grit from 1969.  And I like Quigley Down Under ok.

I think I've seen Rio Lobo before..and maybe Rio Bravo..hmm.. I can't keep those straight.  And I could be thinking of another one that is really similar to one of those.

Eldorado and Rio Bravo are pretty much identical. Probably that one you're thinking of.

I was telling another brother (1 have 4 older brothers!) about this and he tells me I must watch The Cowboys. Said it is his favorite John Wayne movie.

I hope this package arrives today... hoping to fit one in this weekend.

I am finally getting ready to pop one of the movies in now. I am going with a shorter movie for now. It is one that at least looks pretty good from the previews... though it only got a couple votes in the poll.
