The No-Goal, No-Theme, unwatched Marathon
« on: January 02, 2008, 03:29:03 PM »
...for January 2008. (As proposed by RossRoy.)

All you have to do is work down on your unwatched pile, preferably with titles you've never see before. To make things more interesting you can combine it with any of these ideas (or a combination of them), to possibly make selection easier:
Random movie pick marathon
Letter linking marathon (new title begins with last letter of previous title)
Star linking marathon (start and finish on same star)

You should watch 26 (or more) during this month.

My list:

Title Date Rating*Connection to previous movie (if any)
The Lady and the Tramp 1/01_8/10
Edmond 1/01_7/10none
The Black Cat 1/04_7/10same director (Stuart Gordon)

Office: Season One 1/14_7/10none; arrived in December, wanted to see what all the fuzz is about
3rd Rock from the Sun: Season 4 1/17~26_9/10none; been 5 months since I finished Season 3, needed a fix

I'll go for this one, I can't say that all the movie are unwatched since usually I watch them almost after buying them. When they are not watch it's because they were buy to complete an order to get the free delivery (and usually they are not really great to begin with).

I move the rest of the title of my previous marathon here. All the movie from the #10 untill the last one are unwatched

What I'll have to watch

1. Not as bad as everybody say, it have a couple of good ideas. But the movie is so technically inept that I can't give it more even if I like it
2. I would have prefered to watch the original Swiss version, since this is the 1964 US version with some add scene to make it creepier. But my hope are not really high, the odds to have a release of a 1963 sexual study movie not really popular are certainly low.
3. If you are a zombie movie completist only. This one have running zombie who use tools to fight, but the budget was very low. for a better film by the same director try "Grave of the vampire"
4. The best performance of the great character actor Joe Spinell (Rocky, The Godfathers,etc.). The DVD himself get a 5/5 because of the documentary on Spinell career.
5. I have watch the 101 minutes Spanish version. The second one (Return of the evil dead) is much better.
6. A very good one by Michael Crichton before he start to wrote on automatic pilot. A Thriller who mix  publicity and technology.

Starting with Psychomania, I will wrote a short review of each movie (film + DVD) on another thread since each new one is a first time watch for me. Hope that I will not be too boring

"No Goal" sounds good to me.  I'm going to completely rip-off Rick's rating chart from his Christmas marathon. I find that I generally like pretty much anything I care to actually watch, so hopefully this will keep me a bit more critical.  :yellowcard:

1 - One of the worst movies I’ve seen EVER. I would do everything in my power to make sure nobody sees it.
2 - One of the worst movies I've seen in a while. You've been warned.
3 - Did not like it but I can see where there may be someone out there who would.
4 - Not good but has at least one redeeming quality. If you like the genre you may like it.

After having finished Xena the day before yesterday I had the choice to start another TV show (Highlander or Angel would have come to mind) I decided to reduce my unwatched pile (155/581 movies).

But I won't rate my movies on a scale (I am not good at that).

#DateMoviePrevious StateComment
1Jan 13The Lawnmower Mannever seenunfortunately no original audiotrack; supposedly a cyber classic but outdated IMHO
2Jan 13Black Rainunseentypical 80s movie (smoking bad ass cop hunts down evil Mafia/Yakuza man); Douglas' character is arrogant and rude to his japanese colleagues; didn't like it much
3Jan 13Der Eisbärunseengerman fun movie with Til Schweiger
4Jan 13Bubba Ho-tepnever seenARGL! Picked one with forced german subtitles when choosing original audiotrack; Given the setting it was a rather quiet movie but I enjoyed it
5Jan 1412 MonkeysunseenDouble-ARGL! What did I do and to whom? Only after entering the DVD I saw that it has no original audiotrack at all; Have to get one with it; Liked it a lot; Always wondered if it was a coincidence that the woman sat next to the virus-man
6Jan 14The 13th WarriorunseenThree in a row. Today's my lucky day. No, seriously I had thought that forced subs had died out but obviously one has to check every back cover for it before buying. The movie itself was a good "sword movie"; some people say it's bad because of the book, but since I've never read the book I don't care
7Jan 16The Addams Familyunseenreal fun movie that is
8Jan 16Addams Family Valuesunseenliked it even more than the first one, especially with the summer camp
9Jan 16About a BoyunseenI like Hugh Grant flicks; they are light-hearted comedies that don't need to resort to "fart jokes" and the like
10Jan 17American Psychonever seenOn word: strange; and to be honest I did not understand the ending; did he imagine all this without actually doing it?
11Jan 17The Sum of All Fearsnever seenWhile I like both Ben Affleck and Jack Ryan they don't match; Ben is no Dr. Ryan; neither compared to Alec Baldwin nor to Harrison Ford nor to the man in the books
12Jan 17Astérix
et le coup du menhir
unseenThe Gaul Asterix is a local hero around here; but this is one of the inferior movies; the earlier ones are way better
13Jan 18Asterix
in America
unseennot one of my favourites eiter; I bought the complete box with all Asterix movies and this one and the above were unseen for a reason; but on the other hand it's not as bad as I remembered it
14Jan 18The Cannonball Rununseenclassic fun race movie with a lot of stars; liked to watch it again
15Jan 18Major Payneunseenalways liked fun military movies and now I've seen it for the first time in english; had to get used to the major's voice but it was fun to watch it again
16Jan 19For the Love of the GameunseenI think it's a very good movie although I never catched all the rules of that game; and as I said I have nothing against Costner's acting
17Jan 19Back to GayaunseenBtG is the first german CGI animation movie; the story is ok but not outstanding
18Jan 19Bang Boom Bang - Ein todsicheres DingunseenAnother german comedy (it seems to be the only kind of movie we're capable of doing right) that I like
19Jan 19The Evil DeadunseenHorror classic; although horror is not really my genre I enjoyed this one; mainly because of Bruce Campbell
20Jan 19Bad Boys 2never seenit's a fairly good no-brainer; but the Cuba part was a bit of an overdose
21Jan 19BandidasunseenHadn't seen this in English until now; liked the setting and the acting of both women
22Jan 20BarfussunseenI really enjoyed to watch her find her way in the real world with everything being new, even a bus drive; and Til again in his role as likable loser
23Jan 20Batman ForeverunseenI like the dark movies better (B, BR, BB); I bought the 1-4 box because it was cheaper than buying B & BR seperately; but this one is still ok to watch
24Jan 20Batman & Robinnever seenThis one was a bit too much over all the edges; in regards to story, physical abilities of the characters and looks
25Jan 20Be Coolnever seen'Til now I only knew the predecessor Get Shorty but I enjoyed this as much as Shorty; some people don't like it; don't know why
26Jan 20Beverly Hills Cop 2unseenGood to see the fastest mouth of the 80s again; these three movies were good fun action cop movies
27Jan 20Beverly Hills Cop 3unseensame as above; I do like all three parts of that trilogy
28Jan 21TMNTnever seenWhile the story is ok (it's a movie about mutated turtles!) I still like the "real movies" better. They had a certain charme and this doesn't really work with CGI
29Jan 21Bladenever seenThis was actually a blind buy; I have avoided the Blade series for quite some time; somehow I was right; the movie didn't interest me that much; Snipes had better roles than this one
30Jan 21The Blue Lagoonunseenthe story is simple but likeable; who wouldn't want to be stranded with Brooke Shields on an island?; didn't know that Brooke was only 14 when she made that movie until now
31Jan 22Return to the Blue LagoonunseenCouldn't really remember it, just bought it cheap because Milla Jovovich was on the cover :D. Basically it's the same plot as its predecessor with slight variations
32Jan 22Blood Diamondnever seenIt's a rather serious movie; was a blind buy; I am not that big a fan of DiCaprio's; but both main actors played very well
33Jan 22BomberunseenBud Spencer and Terrence Hill (not present in this movie) are my childhood favourites; all their movies are guilty pleasures, this one not excluded; but I still watch them now and then
34Jan 23BrubakerunseenGreat movie; I watched it nearly every time when it came on TV but ironically haven't watch it on DVD until now
35Jan 23Children of MenunseenScary vision; while I have no children of my own, I love children and couldn't imagine a world without them
36Jan 23Chingachgook, die grosse SchlangeunseenIn what used to be the former Eastern Bloc, Gojko Mitić is famous for playing Native Amerians in "Red Westerns"; this movie is based loosely on Cooper's "The Deerslayer"
37Jan 24The Bourne UltimatumunseenGood conclusion to the series; but the camera is a bit too unsteady for my taste
38Jan 24Conan the BarbarianunseenSchwarzenegger classic; it is a good movie but I like his later works better
39Jan 24Brice de Nicenever seenFunny french movie
40Jan 25The CrowunseenIt's an ok movie, but I seriously liked the same plot in The Wraith better; maybe because of the car ;)
41Jan 25Blue StreakunseenFunny how one can adopt to live a cop's live; it's a good comedy
42Jan 25The InterpreterunseenIt is a good movie but I seriously don't believe that it's telling something realistic; personally (without trying to offend anyone) I think the US doesn't give a rat's ass about the UN or the International Court of Justice in The Hague; they say they do, but I don't believe it
43Jan 26Tri orísky pro PopelkuunseenSee also; It's a fairy tale classic and I loved to re-watch it again
44Jan 26One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nestnever seenHey, so many familiar faces!; and they still all have their heir on their heads, too!; good movie, didn't like the end, though; I would have killed Kai Winn
45Jan 26Derailednever seenI am not into thrillers that much, but I like both Jennifer Aniston and Clive Owen; it hard a good plot twist IMHO
46Jan 27Equilibriumnever seenWhat is a world worth without love even if it hasn't hate in it either?; My first movie with Christian Bale in it was Shaft and I think he is an excellent actor in both good and bad roles
47Jan 27Evil Dead IInever seenHorror isn't exactly my genre but I liked to find out how Ash got there were he was in Army of Darkness
48Jan 27Army of DarknessunseenMy favourite of the trilogy; the skeletons are funny as hell
49Jan 27Occhio alla pennaunseenItalian Western with Bud Spencer; I'll always aks myself who can eat more and who can punch harder, Bud or Obelix; had a really good laugh with this movie
50Jan 27Flags of Our FathersunseenI like a balanced POV on the war, that's shows that neither side is the good and the other is the evil; the Vietnam movies were all unbalanced IMHO, mostly not in favour of the GIs

Karsten, If you like The Blue Lagoon, maybe you should try to find "Paradise". It's almost the same story, but in a dessert. The visual is very good and you got "Phoebe Cates" who is a much better actress than Brooke Shields (just a question of preference). Sure it's a rip-off of TBL but contrary to what happen usually the copy is better than the original.

Thx. :)

But "Blue Lagoon" is more a childhood favourite, I bought it (and the sequel) more fore sentimental reasons. ;)

Maybe if I see Paradise in a Wal-Mart bin...

Allow me the latitude to start another posting, the other one has become a bit unmanageable.

50Jan 27Flags of Our FathersunseenI like a balanced POV on the war, that's shows that neither side is the good and the other is the evil; the Vietnam movies were all unbalanced IMHO, mostly not in favour of the GIs

51Jan 27Letters from Iwo JimaunseenI don't know what exactly it is, but somehow I can better connect to this characters (Saigo, Kuribayashi) than to their american counterparts; that is why I like this movie a bit better than Flags From Our Fathers
52Jan 30Per un pugno di dollarinever seenIt's an interesting movie; I grew up watching Eastwood as Rowdie Yates in Rawhide
53Jan 31Per qualche dollaro in piùnever seenGood continuation; Really liked to see Lee Van Cleef; I knew him only from The Master

PS: It's Jan 31st, 11:23p.m. here and I conclude my part in this marathon.

I managed to remove a third of my unwatched pile and I will continue later this year.
