Quote from: Jon on June 04, 2010, 05:54:23 PMTom, your comment about flak suggests you think this is one of those classic films that everyone loves? The sort of film to be included with The Godfather or Casablanca or Lawrence of Arabia as genuine classics you might not have seen?

I only saw "Casablanca" and I liked it. So I will get flak from you, if I should not enjoy The Godfather?  :P

Weighted question! Let's say you should appreciate it more than Gone With The Wind. Hopefully, you'll love it like any sane person. ;)

I'll have to remove it from my Wish List now. If I bought it in the near future this form would surely make me watch it too.

Don't bring me into this! I've never been able to watch it properly. It bored me so rigid, my eyeballs fell out and rolled away. I got them back in eventually, but I daren't risk it again.

I really, really don't give a damn! Definitely the best bit of the film that line, although I'd have slapped her for good measure. Annoying bint. :-X

I've never seen this either. I know if I do, I won't be able to get the Carol Burnett bit Went With the Wind out of my mind and it won't be the same.   Its actually a 20 minute bit but this is the shortest one I could find.

Plot:
In Nashville, there are 10,000 singer-songwriters chasing success... with one chance in a million of getting it. For Miranda "no relation to Elvis" Presley (Samantha Mathis), that's one chance worth taking.

Fresh from New York City, Miranda befriends three fellow hopefuls: shy Connecticut cowboy Kyle Davidson (Dermot Mulroney); Southern belle Linda Lue Linden (Sandra Bullock); and James Wright (River Phoenix), a cocky Texan with brooding good looks and a honeyed voice.

Together they begin a rocky ride down Music City's well-worn highway, finding hope, heartbreak, hapiness... and The Thing Called Love. Acclaimed director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) presents a dynamic, music-filled film that features Phoenix in one of his final roles (and his only singing one), as well as a showy part for Bullock, who would rocket to stardom the following year in Speed.

My Thoughts:
It started out like it could be a fun movie. Sadly it good boring after the first 15 minutes or so. It got better again towards the end.
Sandra Bullock appears in a supporting role and she stole the scene each time appeared. Samantha Mathis was good. But I didn't like River Phoenix's performance. He always looked like he was on drugs on not completely there. He probably was, as this was the last movie he finished before he died on drug overdose. Interesting tidbit: Samantha Mathis and River Phoenix started dating during production of this movie and were still together when he died.
There is a fair share of country music in this film. I liked it. Even though country music is not music I have actively sought out (I have one or two Faith Hill CDs, if this counts for country music), I always enjoyed listening to it when it appeared in a film or TV show.
