Hey all...
A friend of mine wants to get one of her favorite movies on DVD... but can only find it on PAL Region 2 DVD. She asked me about a PAL Multi-Region DVD Player... since I know nothing about multi-region players I thought I would ask here.

Does she need a PAL Multi-region DVD Player to play a pal dvd?

Will a PAL Player work with our TVs?

basically what does she want?  :P

I'm sure other people who are much more knowledgeable than me will chime in denying or approving, but I think I read somewhere that most multi-region DVD player will have the circuitry needed to transfer PAL to NTSC and Vice-versa. I might be completely mistaken on that though...

There's always the possibility of using some tools to remove the region coding and recode to NTSC though ...

Region and Formats are 2 different things.  A region free PAL dvd player won't necessarily work on a north american TV.  She needs a Region Free player that will read PAL format and output to a NTSC tv.  The Pioneer DV-393-S does it but I'm sure there's many models available at a better price.  She just has to check the specs and make sure it can output PAL to NTSC.

Thanks for the info... will let her know what to look for.

Multi-region in the U.S. seems to be a right pain in the backside. Here in the U.K. even our VHS players could output NTSC.

One thing worth noting -although I have no idea if it applies to America- but there is a difference between the terms "Multi Region" and "All Region". The latter defeats the region check, therefore allowing the player to play anything. The former specifically changes the player to the region of the disc inserted.

Adding to what Eric said, I would assume that a multi-region player would naturally convert PAL to NTSC. Certainly I would assume a U.K. player would, but as I already said, Europe seems more friendly to playing other peoples discs!

By the way, what's the film?

She is a big horror fan like me... so it is a vampire movie with Julian Sands... Tale of a Vampire from 1992.
