This guy has done his own little YouTube documentary on the series. I watched it all last night, and his insights are pretty interesting. He takes the series through the Dalton years and his opinion that Timothy Dalton was probably the closest thing to Fleming's original intentions for the character, are extensively scrutinized. His website states that he's working on successive episodes where he'll cover the Brosnan and Craig installments of the franchise. If you love James Bond, give these a chance, they're pretty good.

Thanks for posting those, Antares. I've heard before that Dalton was considered closest and I do think he was the victim of poor planning and delivery. I think he was supposed to be doing View To A Kill, written in a serious vein. Then Moore came back and it was rewritten to be more jokey. Next, The Living Daylights was written for Moore, so quite silly, which was dumped on Dalton. He then came back for a proper, more serious run in Licence To Kill, but the previous couple of entries had temporarily caused the franchise to stall so it wasn't appreciated. Damn shame.

Jon, is your real name Andrew?

[spoiler]
Buffy 6x05 Life Serial
...
ANDREW: We are really super-villains now, like ... like Dr. No. (Jonathan grins)
WARREN: Yeah, back when Bond was Connery, and movies were decent.
JONATHAN: (scornful) Who remembers Connery? I mean, Roger Moore was smooth.
WARREN: You're insane. You're short, and you're insane.
ANDREW: I like Timothy Dalton!
....
WARREN: (to Andrew) Connery is Bond. He had style.
JONATHAN: Yeah, but Roger Moore was funny.
WARREN: Moonraker? The gondola turns into a hovercraft? It's retarded. Besides, the guy had, like, no edge.
ANDREW: Dalton had edge. In Licence to Kill he was a rogue agent. That's edgy. (Warren and Jonathan give him looks of disbelief) And he was amazing in The Living Daylights.
JONATHAN: Yeah, which was written for Roger Moore, not Timothy Dalton!
WARREN: (annoyed) Okay, this is stupid! We're wasting time. End of discussion.
...
WARREN: Connery is the only actor of the bunch.
ANDREW: Timothy Dalton should get an Oscar and (yells) beat Sean Connery over the head with it!
WARREN: (grimly) Okay, that's it.

I am with Andrew on this  :P
One of my favorite Bonds is "Living Daylights". I know that I am in the minority with this opinion though.

Najemikon

 I remember that! Honest, I'd heard the theory before hand, but you have to remember, Joss Whedon is a professional card-carrying nerd. ;)

It's obvious that the person who made these wasn't initially going to go into great depth in the beginning. But I guess after the first two installments, he really started to enjoy what he was doing and really delved into the subject. The segments with Dalton are almost as long as a film in the series.  ;)

But he is right about Dalton, he was tailor made for the role. Here's how I rate the Bonds...

Sean Connery
Timothy Dalton
Daniel Craig
Pierce Brosnan
Roger Moore
George Lazenby
The perfect prototype, even though he sleepwalked during his last three outings.
Just as good as Connery, but a breath below. Would love to have seen what he could have done with the Moore films.
Good, but too much like the Jason Bourne films now.
OK, but schizophrenic in his four outings. Sometimes like Connery, sometimes like Moore. To me, he never 'owned' the role
Campy, never liked his portrayal. He turned me against the series.
Too stiff and unsure about himself within the role

Najemikon

I rate Connery best, but Moore is my favourite actually, though his films run the gamut of sometimes excellent, usually average, often Crap-raker. That's probably because I grew up in the 80s, so he was the Bond I knew. Live And Let Die is in my top three Bonds.

I think the time in which you grew up weighs heavily on anyone's decision over who was the best. I was a child in the 60's when Connery was Bond, and to me, Moore was a shrill paper tiger in the role. His smarmy and elitist manner always bugged me.

Najemikon

I really liked that angle! He was a cocky arrogant bastard and showed it.

I loved this scene as I always felt it defined Bond utterly. No confusing Bourne with this guy and to say Moore is such a wooden actor, it works perfectly here. His focus always on flirting with Solitaire, but still shows a cold calculating edge in regards the thugs. And all credit to Mr. Big as Bond villains go. What? No exposition? Just "waste him"? Scott Evil would be proud...

You're right, that scene best describes everything I hated about him. That pompous paper tiger, strutting like a phallic peacock...I'm James Bond...just the sight of me must be making you wet my dear.  :yucky:

Well, the scene kinda works, but I can't imagine to sit through the entire movie. I never understood the appeal of the Bond movies. I've seen a couple of them as a kid and I suppose I liked them then, but I don't remember them standing out from other crappy stuff I liked back in those times. John Steed on the other hand - now that would be an entirely different matter.

The Bond films just hold a special place in my heart. I may like some more than others but I like them all.

Sean Connery will always be my favorite Bond.

But, Antares is right:
I'm James Bond...just the sight of me must be making you wet my dear.

All it takes is that line and just the sight of them...any of those Bond's can park their slippers under my bed any time!
