The Andromeda Strain
| Year: 1971 | 131 min. | United States

Directed with clinical precision by Academy Award® winner* Robert Wise, The Andromeda Strain is a compelling account of the earth's first biological crisis. After an errant satellite crashes to earth near a remote New Mexico village, the recovery team discovers that everyone in the town are victims of a horrible death, with the mysterious exception of an infant and an old homeless man. The survivors are brought to a state-of-the-art underground laboratory, where the puzzled scientists race against time to determine the nature of the deadly alien virus before it wreaks worldwide havoc. A trailblazer in the areas of special effects and inventive sets, The Andromeda Strain is based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel that created national paranoia for its topical relevance to the first moon landing and is perhaps the most chillingly realistic science fiction thriller ever made.

*1961 Best Picture, Best Director, West Side Story.

Godzilla 1984: The Return of Godzilla
| Year: 1984 | 103 min. | Japan

With a higher budget and more advanced special effects than any previous film in the series, THE RETURN OF GODZILLA® returns Japan’s greatest monster to his intended role as an epic force of destruction and the film’s spectacular success re-launched the Godzilla® franchise after nearly a decade in suspended animation. Unfortunately for North American audiences, this direct sequel to the original 1954 feature film has previously only been available in a highly edited version that cut over twenty minutes of original footage and effects, changed key plot points and altered the dark dramatic tone and narrative by inserting additional scenes and humor in an attempt to "Americanize" the film. But now, at long last, the acclaimed kaiju masterpiece finally hits American shores in all its uncut original glory! Get ready for the biggest Godzilla® epic that you’ve never seen as Kraken Releasing unleashes the complete and unedited THE RETURN OF GODZILLA®!

Sully
| Year: 2016 | 96 min. | United States

On January 15, 2009, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and his copilot (Aaron Eckhart) begin a routine flight that turns terrifying. Sully pulls off the impossible and glides his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. Even though he's heralded for his unprecedented fear of aviation skill, an all-out investigation threatens to destory Sully's reputation and career.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

I "blame" Yves for this one. And it wasn't easy to find an English friendly release. I got a little worried when this arrived. The product description on Amazon Spain said that it had English subtitles, but the packaging only said Castellano. It did actually sport Spanish, French and English subtitles. Whew!

The Bullet Train
UPC 811956-021472 | Japan 1975 | 152 minutes | Twilight Time

The basis for the 1994 American hit, Speed, The Bullet Train (Shinkansen Daibakuha, 1975) stars the wonderful Ken Takakura (The Yakuza) as a mad bomber who plants a device on a high-speed Japanese train, programmed to detonate if the train’s speed drops below 80 kilometers per hour. His design: to collect a multi-million-dollar ransom. Also starring martial arts hero Sonny Chiba as the train’s clever engineer; directed by Junya Satô (The Silk Road).

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver
UPC 811956-021601 | United States 1960 | 99 minutes | Twilight Time

The phenomenal team of special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen, composer Bernard Herrmann, and director Jack Sher bring their gifts to bear on The 3 Worlds of Gulliver (1960), a spritely adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s acerbic satire, Gulliver’s Travels. Satire gives way here, however, to the fantastical tale of a doctor (Kerwin Mathews) and his stowaway fiancée (June Thorburn) who adventure first to Lilliput—a land populated by four-inch-tall schemers—and then to Brobdingnag, where giants prove no more politic.

Mutant
UPC 853765-005656 | United States 1984 | 99 minutes | Code Red, Multicom

A hideous town secret is waiting for two vacationing brothers (Wings Hauser, Vice Squad, Deadly Force, Tough Guys Don’t Dance, and Lee Montgomery, Ben, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Burnt Offerings) who team up with a local sheriff (Bo Hopkins, The Fifth Floor, Tentacles, Sweet Sixteen) to uncover the grisly threat to the entire population. A nearby chemical plant has been dumping toxic water just outside of town, turning townspeople into contaminated, mutant zombies. Now, there’s nowhere to run as the growing army of bloodthirsty ghouls takes over the town and slaughters the remaining humans, one by one! This sci-fi chiller also stars Jennifer Warren (Night Moves) and was directed by John Bud Cardos (The Dark, Kingdom Of The Spiders), featuring a classic score by Richard Band (Re-Animator, Puppet Master). Now see this drive-in horror favorite in HD for the first time!

Since my last update ...

August: Osage County
| Year: 2013 | 121 min. | United States

Academy Award® Winners Meryl Streep* and Julia Roberts** star in the darkly hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives converge when a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional mother who raised them. Based on Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, Director John Wells skillfully translates from stage to screen, leading an all-star cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Margo Martindale, Dermot Mulroney, Julianne Nicholson, Sam Shepard and Misty Upham.

*2011: Best Actress, The Iron Lady **2000: Best Actress, Erin Brockovich

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

†1990, Best Director, Born on the Fourth of July; 1987, Best Director, Platoon; 1987, Best Writing Adapted Screenplay, Midnight Express.

The Caine Mutiny
| Year: 1954 | 124 min. | United States

Nominated for seven Academy Awards® in 1954, including Best Picture and Best Actor, THE CAINE MUTINY is a classic film about the unstable Captain Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) and his tumultuous command of an old minesweeper and her weary crew.

On the high seas during the dramatic battles of World War II, Queeg's by-the-book approach pushes his crew and his popular second-in-command, Lt. Maryk (Van Johnson) to the breaking point.  After a series of questionable orders, Maryk confronts Queeg when he orders the ship directly into the path of a deadly typhoon.  Maryk invokes navel code and relieves Queeg of his command, forcing the crew to mutiny.  Once safely back in port, Maryk is court-martialed for treason, setting off a tense trial that exposes the true state of Queeq's mind.  Nominated for Best Actor, Humphrey Bogart gives a searing performance as he is systematically brken down in this classic take of military conduct in a time of war.

A mile-wide, 300 miles-per-hour force of total devastation is coming at you: Twister is hitting home. In this adventure swirling with cliffhanging excitement and awesome special effects, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton play scientists pursuing the most destructive weatherfront to sweep through mid-America's tornado Alley in 50 years. By launching electronic sensors into the funnel, the storm chasers hope to obtain enough data to create an improved warning system. But to do so, they must intercept the twisters' deadly path. The chase is on!

Tonight everything is changing...

"No crime film is years boasts a cooler vibe than Michael Mann's dazzling Collateral. Mann hits a new peak...Cruise takes his game to a whole new level. Foxx fires up the screen with the power and subtlety of a born star." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Just Like Heaven
| Year: 2005 | 95 min. | United States

Reese Witherspoon stars in the spirited romantic comedy Just Like Heaven. When David (Mark Ruffalo) rents his new apartment, the last thing he wants is company. Then Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) shows up, insisting the apartment is hers...until she disappears right before his eyes. He's convinced she's a spirit. She's convinced she's still alive. As they search for the truth of Elizabeth's past, their relationship changes from resentment to romance. Also starring Jon Heder, Just Like Heaven is a delightful film that critics declare is "one of the best romantic comedies to come along in years" (JP Sarni, Sirius Satellite Radio).

Belle de jour
| Year: 1967 | 100 min. | France

Catherine Deneuve's porcelain perfection hides a cracked interior in one of the actress's most iconic roles: Séverine, a Paris housewife who begins secretly spending her afternoon hours working in a bordello. This surreal and erotic late-sixties daydream from provocateur for the ages Luis Buñuel is an examination of desire and fetishistic pleasure (its characters' and its viewers'), as well as a gently absurdist take on contemporary social mores and class divisions. Fantasy and reality commingle in this burst of cinematic transgression, which was one of Buñuel's biggest hits.

In the Mood for Love
| Year: 2000 | 99 min. | Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past decade of cinema, and is a milestone in Wong's redoubtable career.

Y tu mamá también
| Year: 2001 | 106 min. | Mexico

This smash road comedy from the Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón is that rare movie to combine raunchy subject matter and emotional warmth. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna shot to international stardom as a pair of horny Mexico City teenagers from different classes who, after their girlfriends jet off to Italy for the summer, are bewitched by a gorgeous older Spanish woman (Maribel Verdú) they meet at a wedding. When she agrees to accompany them on a trip to a faraway beach, the three form an increasingly intense and sensual alliance that ultimately strips them both physically and emotionally bare. Shot with elegance and dexterity by the great Emmanuel Lubezki, Y tu mamá también is a funny and moving look at human desire.

The Graduate
| Year: 1967 | 106 min. | United States

One of the most beloved American films of all time, The Graduate earned Mike Nichols a best director Oscar, brought the music of Simon & Garfunkel to a wider audience, and introduced the world to a young actor named Dustin Hoffman. Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman) has just finished college and is already lost in a sea of confusion and barely contained angst when he becomes sexually involved with a friend of his parents', the indomitable Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), before turning his attention to her college-age daughter (Katherine Ross). Visually imaginative and impeccably acted, with a clever, endlessly quotable script by Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb), The Graduate had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation.

The Player
| Year: 1992 | 124 min. | United States

A Hollywood studio executive with a shaky moral compass (Tim Robbins) finds himself caught up in a criminal situation that would be right at home in one of his movie projects, in this biting industry satire from Robert Altman. Mixing elements of film noir with sly insider comedy, The Player, based on a novel by Michael Tolkin, functions as both a nifty stylish murder story and a commentary on its own making, and it is stocked with a heroic supporting cast (Peter Gallagher, Whoopi Goldberg, Greta Scacchi, Dean Stockwell, Fred Ward) and a lineup of star cameos that make for an astonishing Hollywood who’s who. This complexly woven grand entertainment (which kicks off with one of American cinema’s most audacious and acclaimed opening shots) was the film that marked Altman’s triumphant commercial comeback in the early 1990s.

The Assassin
| Year: 2015 | 106 min. | Hong Kong

Celebrated Taiwanese Master Director Hou Hsioo-hsien's long-awaited return to the screen tells the story of Yie Ninniang (Shu Qi), a General's daughter, kidnapped as a child and trained by a nun in the deadly arts- only to be sent home on a bloody mission of revenge, with her once-bethrothed love (Chang Chen) as the target.

The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond
| Year: 2008 | 102 min. | United States

A rebellious socialite defies social conventions for a once-in-a-lifetime shot at true love, only to see her hopes for the future shattered after a priceless diamond vanishes into thin air in this romantic drama adapted from a long-lost Tennessee Williams screenplay.

The Roosevelts: An Intimate History
| Year: 2014 | 840 min. | United States

THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY chronicles the lives of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of the most prominent and influential family in American politics. It is the first time in a major documentary television series that their individual stories have been interwoven into a single narrative. This seven-part, 14 hour film follows the Roosevelts for more than a century, from Theodore's birth in 1858 to Eleanor's death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th President of the United States and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd President of the United States. Together, these three individuals not only redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, but also redefined the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses the history the Roosevelts helped to shape the creation of National parks, the digging of the Panama Canal, the passage of innovative New Deal programs, the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights abroad. It is also an intimate humane story about love, betrayal, family loyalty, personal courage, and the conquest of fear.

The Hunt

From the producers of Frozen Planet and Planet Earth, The Hunt reveals the most surprising and significant events in the natural world in astonishing detail.

See the dramatic encounters of predator and prey in an entirely new light.  Featuring the extraordinary strategies of a huge range of predators, from cheetahs and African wild dogs to killer whales and polar bears, The Hunt will revolutionize what you thought you knew about life in the wild.

Whether through speed, stamina or complex subterfuge, each creature's strategy is honed to its environment - and remarkable adaptations mean that the hunted often can, and do, outwit their hunters.  It's a life-or-death duel where each animal's skills are stretched to the very limit.

The Messenger
| Year: 2009 | 113 min. | United States

Heartwarming, harrowing, and at times darkly comical, THE MESSENGER is a deeply felt story of the human cost of war at home.

Ben Foster (3:10 TO YUMA), in his most powerful performance to date, as Will Montgomery, a battle-scarred Staff Sergeant home from Iraq and newly assigned to the Army's Casualty Notification service. Ordered to bear the bad news to families of fallen soldiers, and partnered with hard-line officer Captain Tony Stone (two-time Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson), Will faces this formidable mission while seeking comfort and healing back on the home front. Against protocol, Will is eventually drawn to Olivia (two-time Academy Award® nominee Samantha Morton), a recently fallen soldier's wife who has just been notified. In this emotionally charged landscape, THE MESSENGER brings us into the inner lives of these outwardly steely heroes to reveal their fragility with compassion and authenticity.

One of the year's most critically acclaimed films, featuring tour-de-force performances from Foster, Harrelson, and Morton, THE MESSENGER is a surprising, moving, and ultimately human portrait of friendship, grief, and love.
