Title: Favourite movies by theme
Post by: surfeur51 on September 28, 2016, 01:40:23 PM: In this topic, I'll post different lists of my 10 favourite movies, by theme. Theme may be a genre, a country of origin, an actor, a director or anything that connects different movies together.

Movies may have different genres, for example, and my lists will take in account the relevancy. For example I'll have Titanic in my disaster movies list but not in my romance movies list , but I agree that it could be the contrary for somebody else.

Well, I try to list them from the favourite (1) to the least one (10). But to be honest, this could change depending on my mood, and there are many that I like that are not in those lists, since 10 movies is very few for some genres. When we are on a by actor theme, it is easier since less movies are concerned.

Since quite all movies can be listed in those genres, I'll need to be specific (no Romances in comedy, for example). But the choices are difficult and I've not yet finalized my lists.

Well, Hollywood is good for romances, and you'll see that when I'll post corresponding list. I also like American musical comedies. But the fact is that in this list, my favourites are mainly from my country (problem of culture, probably...). This will be also true for comedy-drama, that are generally more subtle in Europe than in Hollywood. But Hollywood is top for adventure, western, science-fiction, action and many other genres...

In fact, to have a good idea of the world of movies, you have to taste movies from different countries. Asian movies, European movies and American movies have each their strengths and weaknesses.

I have seen Le Samurai and Le Cercle Rouge, but unfortunately Les Aventuriers does not seem to be available with English subtitles (or - heaven forbid - dubbing). I think I have seen Borsalino, too, but I'm not sure. I guess I should look into some of the other titles. I watch too few French movies. It's laziness. It's easier to watch movies in a language you understand, than to read subtitles. Still, I much prefer subtitles to dubbing.

Maybe I should watch some deep French movie right now. Like something with Louis de Funès. ;D

In France, most of movies are dubbed, whatever their origin. The dubbing is generally done by very good actors, and I generally watch dubbed movies the first time. If I like a movie very much, and if the original language is available on DVD/blu-ray, I watch them subtitled the second time, and since I know the story, I can follow rather easily. Honestly, the dubbed version is generally very correct, and I have even seen some movies where a dubbing actor was far better than the original one...

Post by: GSyren on October 17, 2016, 11:37:30 PM: Well, there are two issues with dubbing. Even if it is done with good voice actors, it's just not the "right" voice. It's another actor trying to impart the same feeling in the dialog as the original actor. It's kind of like seeing a Alain Delon movie with a stunt double playing the role throughout the movie. No matter how good he is, he's not Alain Delon.

The other thing is that it's impossible to do an exact translation, because the sound must match the mouth movement, so it will always be a compromise. Subtitling also has it's problems, mainly in keeping the translation short enough so one has time to read it, but that usually involves less of a compromise.

Of course I am used to subtitling, because Swedish is such a small language that it isn't practical to dub films other than for children.

Even when the actor(actress) is dubbed by him(her)self, (for example Yul Brinner, Marcello Mastroiani, Jodie Foster, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Victoria Abril or Diane Kruger (...and many others), and of course all French actors who play in foreign movies), we get the translation problems.

But really, if the job is correctly done, which is often the case, those inconveniences are more academic then real, and the pleasure when watching the movie is not diminished.

And, with international productions, we now find very often actors dubbed in original language movie. For example, when you, in Sweden, watch an English language subtitled movie with French actors (1492 with Gérard Depardieu for example), or a 007 movie with a French James Bond girl, you get some dubbing, and subtitles

Yes, stop-motion animation films are in this category. But there are so many good animated movies that it was very hard to choose only 10.

Also note that I have not watched all existing movies :(, and some that are really great may not be in my lists, just because I've not seen them. This is true for quite all the themes, except James Bond movies and movies with Nicole Kidman, that I've all watched.

I really appreciate your lists. There are some films on them that I haven't seen. Some that I haven't even heard of, especially among the French films. The problem, of course, is that I don't speak French (apart from the most basic tourist French) so I'd have to find them with English or Swedish subtitles (or possibly English dubbed, but that doesn't seem very common). But I'll be looking.

By the way, I found several movies named Volver, but I assume it's the one by Pedro Almodóvar that you mean?

Yes, and I'm very excited since I'll receive in a few days a boxset with 17 blu-rays of Almodovar, quite all his filmography. For most of them it will be the first release in blu-ray.

I went back and saw it again two more times, and I read all I could find about the real battle at the Alamo. Much later in life I came to work for a San Antonio based company, Datapoint Corporation, and I got the opportunity to visit the company headquarters. This also allowed me to visit the real Alamo, nowadays located smack dab in the middle of San Antonio.

I do regret that at the time I wasn't aware that the movie set was still standing and open to the public in Brackettville, Texas. It's about 2 1/2 hours from San Antonio by car, and it would have been totally worth it. But sadly... :slaphead:

I wish! No, I can't take credit for that, it's Google Translate. So I guess I'll let Google watch those French movies. ;D

But I certainly wish my French was good enough to watch movies w/o subtitles. There are several French movies that I have been unable to find with subtitles. La Boum for example, just to see Sophie Marceau's first movie.
How come so many French movies are available with German dubbing or subtitles, but not with English? And why is my German as bad as my French? I wish I had studied both these more diligently in school. :slaphead:

Oh, Dark Knight Rises sure is still a good movie, and I also liked Bane, but for me, I like The Dark Knight way more (in fact, I'd say it's still one of my favorite movies, not just superhero movie).

But Spider-Man 3 is universally thought to be sub-par, heck I believe even Sam Raimi will agree. Do you just fast forward through certain bits (let's say: the dancing scene, him walking on the side walk), or you enjoy the whole film?

Well, this list was rather difficult to make since many superhero movies are very close inside the same serie. The plots are similar (and totally not credible ;)) , action scenes are always spectacular, and what makes the difference are tiny things about some specific scenes or characters. In fact, to explain why I prefer Spider-Man 3 to the two others, that I also appreciate, is quite impossible, but I do not regret this choice.

About universal thinking, this is the last criteria I take in account. Of course, I loved many movies that are universally appreciated, but in some cases, I was bored by oscarised movies or loved to watch very secondary productions.

No, I think I have not seen this one (perhaps on TV many years ago, but I do not remember). About Sean's earlier movies, I've seen only "The Longest Day" and "A Night to Remember" but in both cases he had minor roles and I did not consider those movies for this list (In my lists by actor, I consider only movies where the actor has a main role).

Of course, Christmas is not the subject of this movie, but the action takes place just before Christmas, and the last scene is in a toy store where the little girl is looking for her gifts.

In fact, many movies I listed here have scenes during Christmas, but without being the main subject (Batman, Die Hard, While You Were Sleeping, 8 Femmes...)

I think I have seen it a long time ago, though. I have Le Magnifique, L'Homme de Rio, and now also Le Marginal, although I haven't watched it yet.

I have some other Belmondo titles as well, the best of those is Le Professionnel. Any thoughts on that one, Yves?

Belmondo, like John Wayne or Louis De Funès, played very similar roles in many of his movies, with a specific style. So, you (generic) like most of his movies or quite none. Le Professionnel is also a typical Belmondo movie, and I like it. It could have been in my list, it was just difficult to choose between similar movies.

That's true. The most atypical Belmondo movie I own would probably be Is Paris Burning?

By the way, did De Funès every do any serious roles? The closest to that in my collection I guess would be the Fantômas movies, since they are not outright comedies, but he still plays his typical comic role.

I agree. This movie is excellent, with many great actors, but no main character. So I would not list this film in a per actor list.

Well, the interest of those lists is to give ideas to other users.

About suggestions, it is always a little difficult since movies' preferences may be very different. My lists are in my own preference order, so I would first recommend "Möbius", if you like realistic spy movies (with much less action than a 007 movie... ;))

"La Belle Saison" is about lesbian love in the French countryside in the early seventies... directed by a woman, this movie is all in delicacy and emotion.

Clint Eastwood's "Hereafter" is a drama with three stories in parallel about people who came very near to death.
It will probably be the easiest to find with English audio.

"Mesrine" is a gangster movie about the real life of Jacques Mesrine. The movie has two parts and you need to see both in correct order.

"Haute tension" is a horror movie with gore scenes.

The other ones are more romantic comedies.

I remember seeing The Sea of Love at the cinema. At that time this type of thriller was very common, but I seem to remember I did enjoy this one more than average. John Goodman and Ellen Barkin co-starred.
