Title: Tom's Buffy and Angel Marathon
Post by: Tom on November 22, 2008, 02:22:26 PM
Currently I am lending my Buffy and Angel seasons to two collegues who have never seen these shows. And all the talk I have with them now about these episodes makes me want to revisit the series again. I will watch my season sets as I am getting them back.

01. Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997-03-10)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Joss Whedon (Writer)
Director: Charles Martin Smith
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Mark Metcalf (The Master), Brian Thompson (Luke), David Boreanaz (Angel), Ken Lerner (Principal Flutie), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Julie Benz (Darla), J. Patrick Lawlor (Thomas), Eric Balfour (Jesse), Natalie Strauss (Teacher), Carmine D. Giovinazzo (Boy), Amy Chance (Girl #1), Tupelo Jereme (Girl #2), Persia White (Girl #3)

It's been some years that I have last watched Buffy. This is a good introduction to the series and its humor. I forgot a lot of funny stuff, like the scene with the principal. Also I had almost forgot about Jesse.
But where the heck is Dawn? Wasn't she always there ?

02. The Harvest (1997-03-10)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Joss Whedon (Writer)
Director: John T. Kretchmer
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Mark Metcalf (The Master), Brian Thompson (Luke), David Boreanaz (Angel), Ken Lerner (Principal Flutie), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Julie Benz (Darla), Eric Balfour (Jesse), Mercedes McNab (Harmony), Jeffrey Steven Smith (Guy in Comp. Class), Teddy Lane, Jr. (Bouncer), Deborah Brown (Girl)

A good showdown to the pilot episodes. I always liked how Buffy defeated Luke.
I always thought that Buffy looked best in Season 1. She got thinner and thinner with each season until she was just a stick. But in season 1 she was just right ;)
I like the make-up job on the Master. Sadly he will be just a whiny vampire when the season gets on.

On the down-side, this episode had some obvious blunders. Like why is the bouncer counting money, when Cordelia said earlier, that there is no cover charge this evening?

I agree. ;) Especially from season 4 onwards she became way too thin.

I never noticed that and I have watched the pilot quite a few times. :o

BTW: You should try to scan (if you scan at all) the cover sideways. It helped with the silver reflection on mine:

I thought she got too thin as the series progressed too.  She was at a nice normal weight when the show started and then eventually ended up a member of the walking toothpick brigade.

I've been thinking about watching my episodes again too..but I haven't yet.

I thought there towards the end she was so thin she was sickly looking.

I been considering watching these 2 series as they aired. Watch seasons 1-3 of Buffy... then Seasons 4-7 of Buffy I would rotate an episode of Buffy followed by an episode of Angel... lining up all crossovers and story continuations as they were when they aired. It would be the first time I seen them as they aired since I didn't get to watch these series when they originally aired.

The only thing stopping me is the thought of having to change the disc after every episode once we hit season 4 of Buffy.

I didn't start watching Buffy until about season..umm..6 I think.  I didn't get the channel when it first started, though I did think it sounded like an interesting show.  I finally started to watch it after it was in syndication and I found some episodes.  Then I started to get the DVD sets.  I watched some of Angel every so often, but didn't start watching all the time until the next to last season..4th I think.

That could be a good way to watch the shows..especially seeing the crossovers as they happened on both and even just some of the references to the other characters, but like you said, that could get to be a pain having to switch the discs that many times.

I think I will do it sooner or later. I want to be able to say that once in my life I saw the series as it was originally meant to be seen.

The more I think about it... I just may do this here soon. changing the discs will be a pain... but what the hell! :P

Well..Buffy is worth it. :)

Now I'm wanting to watch my Buffy sets again...and I still have so many other DVDs I want to get to.     I'll be starting Christmas movies soon.

The only thing stopping me is the thought of having to change the disc after every episode once we hit season 4 of Buffy.

As I also don't want to change the disc after each episode, I have made myself a list, on which episodes it is important to consider the order of watching the episodes to get the most of the crossovers. No guarantee that it is complete as it has been awhile that I watched both series.

Buffy Season 4 / Angel Season 1
B4.1->A1.1
B4.3->A1.3
B4.8->A1.8
B4.15,16->A1.18,19->B4.20

Buffy Season 5 / Angel Season 2
B5.7<->A2.7

Buffy Season 6 / Angel Season 3
B6.4<->A3.4
B6.5<->A3.5

Buffy Season 7 / Angel Season 4
A4.13,14->B7.17->A4.15->B7.18
A4.22->B7.21,22

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" &  "Angel" Crossover Guide (http://www.simonhampel.com/buffy.html)

Thanks! I think this was the guide I used as reference when making my list. But I disregarded everything, where only a character from previous seasons appears in each other series. Also I think I added some to my list, which weren't mentioned in the crossover guide. For example I think I remember, that Buffy 5.07 and Angel 2.07 had flashbacks to the same time and place (I think it was the Chinese Boxer Rebellion) and one scene, where these flashbacks overcrossed.

You seem to be right. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fool_for_Love_(Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer_episode)
Quote
"Fool for Love" is episode 7 of season 5 of the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is a companion to the Angel episode "Darla", which first aired later the same night on The WB network; both episodes include multiple flashbacks to the history of Spike and Darla, shown from their respective viewpoints.

I have a confession to make: I did it again. I fall for nice packages if I enjoy the conents. And now, after already having Babylon 5 twice (first loose season boxes, then a nice complete metal box (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/417ZBBBMZXL._SS400_.jpg)) and having two complete boxes of Friends, first the black UK (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KNWXV814L._SS500_.jpg) then the red US (http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/24/df/3d43225b9da0bbb2b185f010.L.jpg) with partially longer episodes, I ordered a second Buffy box.

I already have this one (UK) (http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/ciu/ce/fc/916dc27a02a0020cc3f77110.L.jpg), but a few days back the entire Buffy series (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V25WKFW9L._SS500_.jpg) was in the Amazon.com goldbox for $70 and I simply couldn't resist.

At least I can justify it to myself with the fact that the UK box used 16:9 from the fourth season on and now I can see it as it was meant to be. ;)

Which is 16:9  ;D
I know Joss says otherwise  :P

Your justification could be, that there are some small cuts in season 3 of the UK version ;)

But the US does away with the recaps and thus looses the great one in the last episode of season 5.

But I have to agree with Peter von Frosta on this case, there are quite a few framing errors with the 16:9 version, for example gags are revealed to soon ("In case of emergency use stairs") and people are only half in the picture.

He made some sample shots.

http://home.arcor.de/yajirobi/upload/buffy.zip

Not included is the scene where Spike is supposedly naked with Buffy but in the 16:9 version you can see his flesh-coloured slip.

But the US does away with the recaps and thus looses the great one in the last episode of season 5.
No "Previously on ..."? Why would someone cut it out?

I don't know, but as far as I have heard, they cut them in the US release which leads to some ackward episode beginnings (music cues). And as I said the previously on Buffy is also missing in the last episode of season 5, where they recapped all five seasons in fast cuts. As I remember, they included this beginning in another season set as an extra then, because there were so many complaints because of this.

Okay. I just finished episode 4. Until now they only used the term "Slayerettes" in episode 3. In my opinion a better term than "Scooby Gang".

03. Witch (1997-03-17)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Dana Reston (Writer)
Director: Stephen Cragg
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Elizabeth Anne Allen (Amy), Robin Riker (Catherine), Jim Doughan (Mr. Pole), Nicole Prescott (Lishanne), Amanda Wilmshurst (Senior Cheerleader), William Monaghan (Dr. Gregory)

This belongs to my least favorite episodes of the first season. Though I liked the resolution to the story.
Also I would have liked to see Amy more often. Sadly she came not back often and when she did, she was there to be a bad influence on Willow in later seasons.

04. Teacher's Pet (1997-03-24)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), David Greenwalt (Writer)
Director: Bruce Seth Green
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), David Boreanaz (Angel), Ken Lerner (Principal Flutie), Musetta Vander (Miss Natalie French), Jackson Price (Blaine), Jean Speegle Howard (Real Miss French), William Monaghan (Dr. Gregory), Jack Knight (Homeless Guy), Michael Ross Verona (Teacher), Karim Oliver (Bud #1)

Probably my least favorite episode of all. Stupid story with no real coherence. No funny jokes which could save the episode.

How did Buffy come to the conclusion that Ms. French is an insect? "Oh, I saw her turning her head 180 degrees. She must be an insect!", "I looked a little into insect books. Of what I have read, she must be a Praying Mantis! Those clothes she's wearing is the final proof for this!"
How convenient that there is a strange vampire around who can sense Ms. French from outside her house. But why did he run up to her the first time around and only when she looked at him, he went running?

The final shot they're hinting that a She-Mantis could be back for another time. Boy am I glad that they never followed up on this!

But I have to agree with Peter von Frosta on this case, there are quite a few framing errors with the 16:9 version, for example gags are revealed to soon ("In case of emergency use stairs") and people are only half in the picture.

He made some sample shots.

The sample shots are all from episodes which Joss Whedon has directed. And I agree, that he paid more attention to framing of how it would look like on 4:3 (he even says so in his commentaries). But I don't think the other directors did.
But also for Joss' episodes you can see, that he shot the scenes protected for 16:9. Otherwise the 4:3 version would always come from the center of the screen, but it was obviously Pan & Scan (as seen in the sample shots). I think Joss shot them first with 16:9 frame in mind and then in editing he took the part of the frame which works best in 4:3 (as he knew it is the version that will be aired on WB). But beside some few shots where an additional thought came into the 4:3 framing, I don't think they especially looked for what is better for 4:3.
I must say, that I enjoyed it more with the 16:9 frame. Especially now, that I have a 16:9 frame TV, but even before then I prefered the widescreen version.

Especially the shots with half a person in the screen is what I like best. It shows that there are more people in the scene. It is more natural I think. And in these scenes you can best see, that it is P&S and not simply 4:3 preserved shooting.

05. Never Kill a Boy on the First Date (1997-03-31)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Rob Des Hotel (Writer), Dean Batali (Writer)
Director: David Semel
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Mark Metcalf (The Master), David Boreanaz (Angel), Christopher Wiehl (Owen), Geoff Meed (Andrew), Paul-Felix Montez (Mysterious Guy), Robert Mont (Van Driver), Andrew J. Ferchland (Boy)

This is an example of an episode, where the story itself is so-so, but it is nonetheless fun to watch because of the fun dialogs and great delivery of these.

06. The Pack (1997-04-07)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Matt Kiene (Writer), Joe Reinkemeyer (Writer)
Director: Bruce Seth Green
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Ken Lerner (Principal Flutie), Eion Bailey (Kyle), Michael McRaine (Rhonda), Brian Gross (Tor), Jennifer Sky (Heidi), Jeff Maynard (Lance), James Stephens (Dr. Wierick), David Brisbin (Mr. Anderson), Barbara K. Whinnery (Mrs. Anderson), Gregory White (Coach Herrold), Justin Jon Ross (Joey), Jeffrey Steven Smith (Adam), Patrese Borem (Young Woman)

Another episode I never really cared for. I didn't like the story and again, nothing really funny which could save the episode.

07. Angel (1997-04-14)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), David Greenwalt (Writer)
Director: Scott Brazil
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Mark Metcalf (The Master), David Boreanaz (Angel), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Julie Benz (Darla), Andrew J. Ferchland (Collin), Charles Wesley (Meanest Vamp)

This is the first real highlight of the series. We are told what it is about Angel. Darla dies. We got good jokes even though it is a more dramatic episode, which is the strong suit about the series. The only bad thing is, that the annoying one's role is too big. I don't like it how the Master is listening to the pep talk of this small brat.

08. I, Robot... You, Jane (1997-04-28)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Ashley Gable (Writer), Thomas A. Swyden (Writer)
Director: Stephen Posey
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Robia LaMorte (Jenny Calendar), Chad Lindberg (Dave), Jamison Ryan (Fritz), Pierrino Mascarino (Thelonius), Edith Fields (School Nurse), Damon Sharp (Male Student), Mark Deakins (Voice of Moloch (voice))

Even though the story is ridiculous, this episode is enjoyable. Also we have the first appearence of Ms. Calendar :)

09. The Puppet Show (1997-05-05)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Dean Batali (Writer), Rob Des Hotel (Writer)
Director: Ellen S. Pressman
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Richard Werner (Morgan), Burke Roberts (Mark), Armin Shimerman (Principal Snyder), Lenora May (Mrs. Jackson), Chasen Hampton (Elliot), Natasha Pearce (Lisa), Tom Wyner (Voice of Sid (voice)), Krissy Carlson (Emily (Dancer)), Michelle Miracle (Locker Girl)

I always liked the twist, that Sid the dummy turned out to not be the demon but a demon hunter. First appearance of Quark. Armin Shimerman was perfect for the role of Principal Snyder.

10. Nightmares (1997-05-12)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), David Greenwalt (Screenwriter), Joss Whedon (Story By)
Director: Bruce Seth Green
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Mark Metcalf (The Master), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Jeremy Foley (Billy Palmer), Andrew J. Ferchland (Colin), Dean Butler (Hank Summers), Justin Urich (Wendell), J. Robin Miller (Laura), Terry Cain (Ms. Tishler), Scott Harlan (Aldo Gianfranco), Brian Pietro (Coach), Johnny Green (Way Cool Guy), Patty Ross (Cool Guy's Mom), Dom Magwili (Doctor), Sean Moran (Stage Manager)

This episode will always be the episode for me, where we get to see Buffy as a vampire. And I can understand Xander: She is still hot being one

11. Out of Mind, Out of Sight (1997-05-19)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Ashley Gable (Screenwriter), Thomas A. Swyden (Screenwriter), Joss Whedon (Story By)
Director: Reza Badiyi
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), David Boreanaz (Angel), Clea DuVall (Marcie Ross), Armin Shimerman (Principal Snyder), Ryan Bittle (Mitch), Denise Dowse (Ms. Miller), John Knight (Bud #1), Mercedes McNab (Harmony), Mark Phelan (Agent Doyle), Skip Stellrecht (Agent Manetti), Julie Fulton (FBI Teacher)

An average episode. Nothing really special. But this episode start to get Cordelia more involved with our group.

12. Prophecy Girl (1997-06-02)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Joss Whedon (Writer)
Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Mark Metcalf (The Master), David Boreanaz (Angel), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Robia LaMorte (Jenny Calendar), Andrew J. Ferchland (Colin), Scott Gurney (Kevin)

Joss Whedon always had a good hand with writing season finales (with maybe the controversial exception of season 4). This episode has in my opinion one of the most memorable scenes of the entire series in it. The scene were Buffy learns, that she is prophecied to die and she is quitting therefore.

"The way you've been eating we can affort it". Even her mother notices it, that she's getting thinner :D

Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), David Boreanaz (Angel), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Robia La Morte (Jenny Calendar), Andrew J. Ferchland (The Anointed One), Dean Butler (Hank Summers), Brent Jennings (Absalom), Armin Shimerman (Principal Snyder), Tamara Brown (Tara)

In my opinion one of the weakest Buffy episodes. Highlight is the first scene with the almost kiss between Willow and Xander. Buffy behaves like a bitca without a real reason. So she feels down because of the Master. I can understand that she's depressed, but is that a reason for her behaviour in this episode? Sadly this trend continues in later seasons.

Probably the low point of Buffy. After this episode the real fun begins. But this episode is just stupid.
The only good thing is Giles trying to ask out Jenny Calendar and their date later on.
Best line: (Angel to Buffy) "I saw fire and I thought you were here"

A great introduction of Spike. With him killing the Annoying One, it is also a turning point in the series. Like he says, it will be more fun around here now.

A weak episode which I never really liked. Some funny Xander moments, but otherwise dull. Maybe it's because it's a cliched plot with a sorority which is doing funny business.
There is a movie sound cliché which always bothers me and it did strike again in this episode. Why do cars in American movies/episodes always sqeak, when they are stopping (even with new cars)? I always think to myself, that maybe the brakes of American cars do make this sound. But why put this sound bite to German cars (like in this episode)? Maybe to not confuse the American audience?

The same reason why tyres squeak when you do a kick-start - even on sand.

The same reason why you hear a metallic chafe sound when someone draws his sword - the inside of a sheath is rarely (if ever) metallic.

I always enjoyed this episode a lot. Ghost Willow was especially great. And a helpless Buffy was also interesting to see.

I think it's great they introduce the Ripper side to Giles. The last few episodes, Giles was becoming the butt of too many jokes.

I have a conflict of interest here. I'd love to do a Buffy & Angel marathon myself (maybe without the written Angel part [again]) but I "have to" watch two more seasons of DS9 (I didn't watch any this weekend and I will be in Berlin next weekend) and I don't think two people should do the same marathon unless it's a group thingy and I wanted to watch Farscape again and when it's finished Battlestar Galactica.

Argl, I need more time!

MacDonald (Detective Stein), Jeff Langton (Vampire)

I never liked this episode very much. At the time I thought robots did not fit with the Buffyverse (though later on other robots came).
This was the first Buffy episode which had a "big" guest star. I think John Ritter did well.
What I liked about this episode is, when Buffy thinks she accidentally killed a human and how she handles it.

It's also episodes like this that seperate a show like Buffy from others. Especially Smallville comes to mind. Both shows ended their second season with the main character skipping town and having him/her being in the big city at the begin of the third season.

But there are fundamental differences: With Clark it's always like this: he makes a choice or a decision without really knowing the consequences, he has just to deal with them afterwards. But he has rarely to make a conscious hard choice, he has often the blessing of ignorance.

Buffy on the other side has to make the hard chocies, full knowing what'll cost (her). She had to kill Angel, there was no choice and she went through with it because it had to be done.

Probably my favorite Buffy season finale. I remember first seeing it, when it was first aired in Germany and had to wait months for the new season.
As a matter of fact I think I had it taped, because I was vacationing in the US at the time. There I got to see some episodes from the third season. My first chance to see Buffy in English. At the time it was something special to have the chance to see the original language version. No DVDs and still on dial-up internet connection. I remember that the third season finale was supposed to air, but got postponed. My first taste of English language Buffy were some re-runs (Homecoming, Band Candy, and I think Doppelgangland as replacement for Graduation Day Part II).

It also marks the introduction of the mayor, the main villain of the season.
My favorite line: "As Willow goes, so goes my nation" (by Oz)
Another thing: I always thought that Scott was right to dump Buffy. It was obvious it wasn't fun for him to be with her. I would have liked it, if they had explored this relationship longer. I think it would have been refreshing to have Buffy in a good relationship with a normal nice guy for a while, who would have only been slowly sucked into her slayer life.

I always loved this episode. Spike's return to Sunnydale mirroring his first appearence only this time at a low point of this life. Spike's crying on Willow's shoulder
Making us believe Cordelia died when showing a funeral but then when the camera gets to Buffy and Willow we find out, that Cordelia is okay.
And then concluding with Spike in high spirit again (singing the Sid Vicious version of "My Way"), but with anyone else arriving at a low point.

I love alternate reality stories just as much as time-travel stories.
Cordelia wishes from Anya (in her first appearance on the series), that Buffy never came to Sunnydale. The result: Vampire Willow :) and Vampire Xander. In the past, I didn't like this episode very much. But this time around, I really enjoyed it. We have flashbacks to Angel's past and Willow and Oz making up. Probably I didn't like the twist at the end in the past. But now it makes total sense. That Power That Be play a more vital role in the Angel series, but here we already learn, that they are responsible for Angel's return and also save him at the end of this episode. I like it, that not Buffy's pep talk saved him, like you would expect. Angel would have really died here, when TPTB would not have intervened.

I never really liked this episode. The sudden introduction of Willow's mom. Until now, they kept Willow's and Xander's parents unseen. This should have not been broken unless for good reason, but here Willow's mom shows up and turns out to be a really uninteresting character. The producers probably noticed this too, so she was never seen again.
Also the Hänsel and Gretel thing was stupid. The old German newspaper article they saw seemed to be translated with a babelfish
Giles' German is hardly better.
And Amy is turned into a rat and we do not get to see her for a few years :( (except once for a second).

Highlights:
Cordelia asking, how come that Giles has always knocked unconscious ("One of these days you are gonna wake up in a coma"), and Buffy's "Did I get it? Did I get it?"

I love this episode! Always fun to see Vampire Willow.
I really like the scene, where the gang thinks Willow is dead and then their reaction when they find out, Willow is still alive.

Also this episode introduced me to the band "K's Choice". I really like their song "Virgin State of Mind" they are playing in this episode in the Bronze.

I always liked the fight between Buffy and Faith at the end of this episode. I also like the romance building between Anya and Xander, which began in the previous episode and will be explored further in the upcoming seasons. And Willow's distaste for Anya is always fun, which has begun in Doppelgangland when she proposed (under the guise of Vampire Willow) to start killing by beginning with her (Anya).
Nice touch with the hangman playing. Interesting to see, that also in the US it seems to be common to play games in class at the end of a school year.

I remember, too! In 2002 I began to earn "real" money and I spend it on the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seasons. 99 to 109 Euros each! One year later I paid the same amount for every season of Star Trek: The Next Generation

And then Babylon 5 came out: 40€ per season. I swore to never pay that much money on one season pack again - But I already had started with Stargate SG-1 which costed about 90 Euros each.

Now you get entire complete series boxes for that money.

I dropped lucky. I was collecting X-Files and Buffy. Each Christmas I'd get one as a present, while others I bought using vouchers earned from Virgin.net for hosting their cinema discussion. They used to send £40 every couple of months so I could at least halve the cost of an average set. Otherwise, wouldn't have bothered...

I paid this much for each season of Buffy, Angel, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: DS9, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: TOS and even for most Highlander and Due South seasons. I am not sure how I could have afforded it thinking back now. Probably because TV series DVD releases were relatively few and far between. Nowadays I still spend this kind of money, just on more season sets at once.

A good start to the series. Back then I was a little skeptical that a Angel series could work, but this episode had shown, that this series has potential.
Maybe a little too much exposition forced into it, to get new viewers up-to-date.
But what is with the ugly and strange vampire make-up in this episode? I don't remember if this new make-up was just an experiment in the beginning of the series, or if it was actually used throughout the Angel series like that.
I have just read on Wikipedia, that they tried a new vampire look in this episode, but were unhappy with it and returned to the vampire look known from Buffy.

I meant Buffy up to that point. Later on they also took Angel's stance.
And with Whistler it was made clear, that he is there to balance between good and evil. He also would have done evil things. And wasn't he half-demon? I don't remember exactly, only that he was supposed to be on Angel instead of Doyle.

This episode is so full of bad clichés. Particular the assembly of the demons wanting to get rid of the half-breeds. This supposedly Nazi-rally like scene. Also the means to it is a rather lazy plot device. Just to give Doyle a chance to die an heroic death.
Even a computer game did something similar a lot better. I mean "Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom". One of my all-time favorite games. In it, Admiral Tolwyn (played by Malcolm McDowell), is using a gene-selective bio-weapon to get rid of all people who do not match a certain criteria in their genes. During the game, the main protagonist Colonel Blair (Mark Hamill, "Luke Skywalker") also infiltrates a rally just like Angel did in this episode.

What I really liked in this episode is the final scene with the pre-recorded videotape of Doyle.

Most of the episode is a rather boring Exorcist rip-off (or so I assume. I never have seen Exorcist). But I like the twist at the end, that the boy is more evil than when the demon was inside him.

Romance is also on the rocks for Oz as he confesses he is still in love with Willow, while a bewildered Willow confesses her new-found relationship with Tara! Angel fans will also be delighted to see a return of Angel to Sunnydale in 'The Yoko Factor', leaving Buffy divided between old flame and new boyfriend Riley. The Scooby gang are forced to integrate themselves into university life and find it harder than they had thought, dealing with usual adolescent issues like homesickness and dating - not helped by blood-sucking vampires making their evil presence felt. This boxset is a gripping combination of teenage life and ghoulish heart stopping vampire action that make Buffy The Vampire such addictive viewing.

But taken as a stand-alone episode, this one is really great and this time around I really enjoyed it. This is one of Joss's experimental episodes. In my opinion he captured the dream sequences great. They did feel like real dreams with all the constantly changing circumstances. Also nice that we got to see some old faces like Oz, Olivia and Snyder. And nice that we got to see the actor who was playing Adam without the makeup.

I never really liked this episode. I don't like the way Dracula is portrayed. He is similar in character to Byron from Babylon 5, who I also don't like. Also I think Dracula as a real figure doesn't fit into Buffyverse. He doesn't even look like other vampires in the series.

I enjoyed this episode. Even though the premise is nothing new, it is fun to watch two different Xanders. And we aren't even bothered with bad split-screen effect, because Nicholas Brendon's twin brother doubled for the second Xander.

This is the start of the low point of this season for me. I like that Amy is back, but I do not like the way she is used here. The episode itself is not bad, but I really do not like the fact, that they have broken up Xander and Anya in such a stupid way.

I didn't really like Tara, but 'Seeing Red' always brings a tear to my eye. I think I'm one of the few Buffy fans who actually loves season 6. It's usually known as one of the worst.

Bailey (Cave Demon), Brett Wagner (Trucker)

The conclusion is better than the previous episode. I liked that it is Xander, the one without any superpowers, who saves the day.
I am not sure of it was on purpose by Joss Whedon, but I had the feeling that he was giving his opinion on this season through Giles. The first season which wasn't headed by him. When Buffy confesses all the bad things which she did this season concluding with her sleeping with Spike, Giles gets a laughing fit because of the absurdity of it and then tells her, that he (Giles/Joss) should have been here.

A good episode. It's also the first appearance of Vi, played by Felicia Day ("The Guild", "Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog"). She is one of the reasons I was looking forward to watch season seven again. The last time I watched it, I didn't know her yet and I didn't remember her. No wonder. Her role is quite small. She even only appears during the ending credits.

The obvious storyline they had to do. Let Dawn think she is a potential. There is one argument for her not liking it, which really bothered me. She said, for her to be activated, her sister would have to die. Why do they always forget, that it would have to be who has to die for the next slayer to be called? The slayer line now runs with Faith. Only the first time that Buffy died, a new slayer was activated. This was Kendra and after her death, Faith was called. No new slayer was called after Buffy died the second time.
