Title: Superhero Marathon
Post by: addicted2dvd on May 18, 2009, 02:50:55 AM
Superhero Marathon
Today I was thinking back at all the fun I had doing the Batman and Superman marathons with the old Batman and Superman movie serial chapters between each movie. I decided I wanted to do something like that again... but I didn't want to wait till the weekend to do so. So what I decided to do is a slow paced marathon (meaning I may only do one movie a day or even every other day)... and in between each episode I will be watching chapters of a Superhero serial. This time I chose....

The Adventures of Captain Marvel
Considered by many to be the finest serial ever made, The Adventures of Captain Marvel chronicles the exploits of "The World's Mightiest Mortal" as he combats The Scorpion, a hooded villain intent on obtaining six optical lenses that, when aligned properly, turn ordinary stones into gold! Highlighting the serial were the fabulous flying sequences by Republic's ace special effects team, Howard and Theodore Lydecker. Combining a wired dummy photographed against real backgrounds in natural sunlight, with spectacular take-ff leaps and landings supplied by action ace, David Sharpe, the final effects are still as fascinating today as they were in 1941. The Adventures of Captain Marvel marked the very first time a comic book superhero's exploits were transferred to the silver screen, and the resulting 12 chapters have yet to be equaled for excitement and entertainment.

Supergirl
When the planet Krypton was destroyed in a cosmic holocaust that claimed its great civilization, Kal-El (known to Earth as Superman) was believed to be the only survivor – until now...

Safely hidden in the void of inner-space is the Kryptonian city of Argo — saved by the scientist Zaltar (Peter O'Toole) and powered by the magical Omegahedron. But now the city's vital power source has been lost, and only one courageous person can retrieve it! Her name is Kara...on Earth she is known as Supergirl (Helen Slater). Standing in her way is the evil sorceress Selena (Faye Dunaway) who has taken control of the fantastic power source. With her now super-powered black magic, the villainess is bent upon nothign less than world domination! Can Supergirl retrieve the Omegahedron before it is too late?

Supergirl features an all-star cast: Faye Dunaway, Peter O'Toole, Hart Bachner, Peter Cook, Mia Farrow, Brenda Vaccaro, Simon Ward, and Helen Slater as Supergirl.

This Limited Edition double disc set contains two versions of the film: the International version — containing 10 minutes of footage not seen in the U.S. and presented in Widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound; and the Director's Cut — containing 24 minutes of long lost and recently rediscovered footage presented here for the very first time! Adventure soars higher than ever before

My Thoughts:
For this viewing I decided to watch the Director's Cut version for the extra 24 minutes. Clocking in at 2hr. 18min... this movie is a little on the long side. But you really don't notice this when watching. The movie is just so much fun that it seems to be over before you know it. I think both Helen Slater and Faye Dunaway did a great job. Sure there was some parts of this movie that I found to be a little on the silly side... but to be honest that just made it more entertaining and I think the silliness was well balanced within the rest of the movie for the most part. Over-all I am glad I got the limited edition DVD when it was released. There is no extras what so ever on the Directors cut DVD but there is a few good things included on the International version DVD in the set.

My Rating:

Chapter 1: Curse of the Scorpion
Billy Batson is given the ability to become Captain Marvel after the curse of the Scorpion is unleashed.

My Thoughts:
This is the first movie serial I ever seen. Normally in my experience a chapter of a movie serial runs approximately 15 to 17 minutes long... with the first chapter a little longer (usually 20some minutes long)... but in this case the first chapter is a half an hour long! But that is understandable in this case as the first chapter not only has to set up the story but also the origin of Captain Marvel. The first chapter is a lot of fun... and it has a good cliffhanger ending. I really liked how they got 2 different people playing Billy Batson and Captain Marvel.

Spider-Man
From Columbia Pictures Presents, A Marvel Enterprises/Laura Ziskin Production, Spider-Man is a live-action feature of one of the world's most popular comic book superheroes. Directed by Sam Raimi, Spider-Man centers on student Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) who, after being bitten by a genetically-altered spider, gains superhuman strength and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface. He vows to use his abilities to fight crime, coming to understand the words of his beloved Uncle Ben: "With great power comes great responsibility."

My Thoughts:
I remember the first time I saw this movie. Since Spider-Man has been my favorite superhero I was a kid it is one of the few movies I bothered to go see at the theater when it was first released. I remember initially being disappointed with his web coming from his wrist instead of the webshooters that he created in the cartoons and such I grew up on. But shortly into the movie I decided that I liked the idea of how the movie does it even better then the way I grew up knowing it to be. I thought the choice of Toby Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man was very good... he did a great job with the role. I have watched this movie many times since I got the dvd... and still enjoy it just as much as I did the first time.

Chapter 2: The Guillotine
Billy and Whitey attempt to reclaim the lens stolen by the Scorpion from the camp. However, the Scorpion has an electric guillotine rigged to prevent anyone from taking the lens back.

My Thoughts:
The second chapter of this serial I enjoyed quite a bit. Not as much wasted time setting up the story this time. The archaeologists comes back to the states in this one. And it has a great cliffhanger at the end.

Mystery Men
The hippest cast in history has united to become the funniest superhero team ever. Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Geoffrey Rush, and Paul Reubens join forces in this wild, funny and thoroughly original misadventure.

When Captain Amazing, Champion City's legendary superhero, falls into the hands of the evil madman Casanova Frankenstein and his disco-dancing henchmen, there's suddenly a chance for the aspiring superheros to show what they can do. They're the Mystery Men...a ragtag team of superhero wannabes featuring: Mr. Furious, whose power comes from his boundless rage; The Shoveler, a father who shovels "better than anyone"; The Blue Raja, a fork-flinging mama's boy; The Bowler, who fights crime with the help of her father's skull; The Spleen, whose power is pure flatulence; Invisible Boy, who's only invisible when no one's watching and the Sphinx, a cliché-sprewing philosopher.

With its outrageous adventure, incredible cast and hip alternative humor, Mystery Men is so irresistibly funny and appealing, seeing it just once will never be enough.

My Thoughts:
Felt a little like a comedy today. This is a pretty good comedy... though I did find it a bit silly at times... and I have definitely seen better superhero movies. I liked most of the cast as well... though one person on the cast I was not impressed by is Greg Kinnear as Captain Amazing. At least he wasn't in most of the movie.

I've just noticed that you don't have Flash Gordon in your collection (the film, not the serials). This is something that you could certainly like (it's silly, it's fun and it's my favourite "super-hero" movie). At least you're lucky since a region 1 edition is available now (not as great as the region 2 that I own, but since you aren't crazy like me with the extra).

Oh yes, Flash Gordon would be a great addition to your collection.  The movie is a bit silly, but it is very entertaining.  Definitely worth seeing.

Here's the version I have..I found it on sale last year, I think at Amazon.  There aren't many extras, but I'm still glad I got it.

Chapter 3: Time Bomb
Betty is kidnapped by the Scorpion's henchmen and sent adrift in a driverless vehicle

My Thoughts:
Another good chapter with a great cliffhanger. One thing I could never understand about these superhero shows. One of the bad guys are shooting at Captain Marvel... and the bullets just bounce off him... just like they do on Superman. But yet right after bullets bouncing off him... the same bad guy breaks a chair over his head and he stumbles backwards and is knocked out. Oh well... these shows are not perfect... but they are a lot of fun.

Underdog
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a frog...no, it's Disney's 'Underdog' - a flying, talking canine caped crusader! After an accident in the mysterious lab of mad scientist Dr. Simon Barsinister, an ordinary beagle named Shoeshine finds himself with extraordinary powers... and the ability to talk! Armed with a fetching superhero costume, Underdog vows to protect the beleaguered citizens of Capital City and, in particular, a beautiful spaniel named Polly Purebred. When a diabolical plot by Barsinister and his overgrown henchman Cad threatens to destroy Capital City, only Underwear...(oops!)...Underdog can save the day. Based on the original hit animated series 'Underdog' - your family will love watching the next great hero take a big bite out of crime.

My Thoughts:
My daughter and I decided to watch a movie together this morning. We picked Underdog since I am already doing a bit of a Superhero marathon off and on here lately. The cartoons this is based on were pretty bad for anyone but the younger kids.... but the movie is a good, fun movie for the entire family! I really enjoyed every minute of it. This movie is a great addition for any family library.

This is a good chapter... but not as good as some of the others. Pretty much this whole chapter felt more like filler to me then anything else. The cliffhanger for this one is only OK... it is just a "Will Captain Marvel get there in time?" cliffhanger. I haven't mentioned anything on the quality of this dvd yet... it is impressively good. only minor problems with the image here and there... and very good sound. Over all it is very crisp and clear. They did a good job remastering this serial.

Justice League: The New Frontier
Based on Darwyn Cooke's award-winning graphic novel, this thrilling adventure reveals the origin of the Justice League. With Cold War paranoia putting Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman under government suspicion, only the gravest threat imaginable can force these heroes - along with an army of newcomers including The Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter - to unite in a spectacular showdown to save the world.

My Thoughts:
This is one I have never seen before... but been wanting to see. So I was thrilled when I got it today for my birthday! I enjoyed this one... is a good movie... but I have to admit I was expecting a little more from it. I think it could have been better. I guess it is just different then I was expecting. I thought that the Justice League would have been formed by the middle of the movie... when actually it don't happen till the end. It is the events leading up to the creation of the Justice League. And this also hit on a pet peeve of mine... Wonder Woman is not supposed to fly!!! At least I never seen any other show where she had. That was the reason for her invisible plane... so what is with the flying? But over all I liked this movie... and this 2-disc DVD set looks great... looks like it is packed with extras. Though I haven't had the chance to check out any of the extras yet.

Chapter 5: The Scorpion Strikes
The Scorpion overhears that Billy Batson communicates with Captain Marvel, so he decides to use Batson as bait so he can kill Captain Marvel.

My Thoughts:
Another good... but not great chapter. At least this one has a good cliffhanger. Not too much else to say about this one. Just that the serial is still very entertaining... and over all... I am still enjoying this serial very much.

Ultimate Avengers: The Movie
A world in crisis. Age-old enemies on the verge of attack. A mighty team is recruited, and Earth's ultimate hero is sought to lead them — Captain America. Unfortunately, he's been frozen in ice for over sixty years.

Inspired by Marvel's best-selling books, "The Ultimates," this is the extraordinary story of six very independent heroes who, like it or not, must fight as one to save the world. Little did they know that their biggest threat would emerge from within their very own ranks — The Incredible Hulk!

My Thoughts:
I got this through Amazon Marketplace very cheap. After watching it I feel like I got a heck of a deal... because I enjoyed every minute of it!  I was never familiar with The Avengers... but always liked both Captain America and Iron Man. But before this movie I never even heard of a few of them (Wasp, Giant Man & Black Widow). I really enjoyed seeing the team get together. This is now the second time I watched this movie since I got it... about a month and a half ago. And I enjoyed it just as much on the second viewing as I did on the first.

The Scorpion pretends he has captured all but one lens in order to fool the others into revealing where they hid them.

Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Panther
To save humanity, the Earth's mightiest heroes must reunite for a rematch of heroic proportions.

Mysterious Wakanda. It lies in the darkest heart of Africa, unknown to most of the world. An isolated land hidden behind closed borders, fiercely protected by its young king — the BLACK PANTHER. But when brutal alien invaders attack, that leaves the Black Panther with no option but to go against the sacred decrees of his people and ask for help from outsiders. And so he turns to...

THE AVENGERS — Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man, Wasp, Black Widow and the Incredible Hulk. These mightiest of heroes have battles the aliens before and barely survived. They thought it was over. They were wrong.

My Thoughts:
This is the first time I ever seen this one. It is another movie I got for my birthday today. After enjoying the first part so much I couldn't wait to check this one out as well. Hoping I would enjoy it just as much as the first. And I was not disappointed at all... once again they did a very good job on this animated movie. I once again enjoyed every minute of it. Though there was a couple minor things in the story line that I didn't care much for. But I am thrilled I have it. I believe if you enjoyed the first one... you will enjoy this one as well. The Black Panther is one I have heard of before... but I never actually seen him in anything till now. I do like this character... very well done.

Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow
Whenever the forces of evil threatened mankind, Earth's mightiest heroes, the Avengers, were there to stop them — until they made the ulitmate sacrifice in their final fight with the indestructible robot, Ultron. But all was not lost for Tony Stark (Iron Man) kept the children of the Avengers safe and raised them to become the teenage heroes of tomorrow. Now James (son of Captain America and Black Widow), Torunn (daughter of Thor), Azari (son of the Black Panther), and Pym (son of Wasp and Giant Man) must finish the fight their parents started. Soon the arrow-slinging son of Hawkeye will join their ranks, but it will take more than five teens to destroy the machine that defeated their parents. If these young heroes have any hope of winning, they must find the missing Hulk and come together as... the Next Avengers!

My Thoughts:
This is the first time I ever seen this movie. It is one my daughter picked up for my for my birthday. This is another one I liked a lot. It was fun not only seeing the kids of the Avengers... but also seeing an old Tony Stark/Iron Man and an old Bruce Banner/Hulk. One thing I would liked to know though... which they never said in the movie. I wander who was the mother of the Black Panther's son. He had a cool electricity power... and was wondering how that fit in. But unfortunately it just didn't say. Now I do like this movie... but I must admit I prefer the original Avengers.

By the way Pete: Have you ever watched the He-Man reboot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0331744/)?
I got in the mood to watch a couple of episodes again, as watching the Wonder Woman movie has reminded me very much of this series. It has similar animation style.
And as you seem to enjoy animated superhero series and movies, I think you would enjoy it.

Oh, when you already liked the old cartoon, then you will love this new version. In my opinion it is both a great series for a new generation, but also great re-imagination for the nostalgic fans. This series gives nice back stories for the characters which were only touched upon in the old series.

Pete, the release of the rebooted He-Man series that I have, are dicontinued because the company who did release them went out of business (which is a shame because they did make high quality releases for a low price and obviously with much love.)
But now another company has has picked up (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/He-Man-Masters-Universe-The-Complete-Series/12143) the license and will release the complete series (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002DQL34G/tvshowsondvdcom) (39 episodes) for the great price of $24.98 in September.
I think you would really enjoy it. Think of Justice League set to a fantasy background.
Of course I can hardly say if this comparison fits as I do not really know Justice League. But I think you can compare the "Masters of the Universe" with the Justice League, where He-Man is Superman.

Daredevil
Take the dare as never before with this all-new Director's Cut version of Daredevil. Grittier and edgier than the original theatrical release, Daredevil Director's Cut is packed with never-before-available scenes, including a devilish subplot in which Matt Murdock (Ben Affleck) agrees to defend a not-so-innocent man (Coolio) framed for murder. This is the definitive Daredevil — more thrilling, more amazing, and more daring than ever!

My Thoughts:
I have seen this movie before... but it has been a long time. And then it was only the Theatrical Version of the movie. This is the first time I ever seen the Director's Cut. I definitely noticed quite a bit that was new to this version. And what was added in made the movie better then I remember the theatrical cut being. There is a lot of great fighting in this movie... but I must say my favorite had to be the playful fight between Matt Murdoch and Elektra in the playground. I thought everyone did a fine job in this movie. As for the casting I think they got a couple characters cast perfectly. I couldn't picture anyone else playing either Elektra or Kingpin. Anyway... I enjoyed the movie quite a bit... and thrilled I got it today for Father's Day.

I have the original release of Daredevil but haven't got around to watching it yet.  I did watch a couple episodes of The Adventures of Superman yesterday, though...and being that I'm a big westerns fan, I found two appropriate episodes that were back-to-back episodes.  First was one that took place in a western town with a bully played by Myron Healey.  Then there was "Flight To The North" featuring none other than Rifleman star Chuck Connors as a backwoodsan named Sylvester J Superman...now, did you ever meet anyone who had the surname of Superman?  One of my favorite lines was him saying "He jumped up in the air and kept on going!"

The Invincible Iron Man
Past and present collide in this epic adventure that reveals the origin of Iron Man. While raising the ruins of a long buried Chinese kingdom, billionaire inventor Tony Stark digs up far more than he bargained for. He unleashes an age-old prophecy that foretells the resurrection of the Mandarin, the emperor of China's darkest and most violent dynasty. In order to confront the destructive force, Tony creates an armored suit infused with high-tech weaponry. To stop the evil that he himself has raised form the earth, Tony must become his greatest invention ever — Iron Man! The newly born champion must travel to the four corners of the earth to battle the Mandarin's henchmen, the Elementals — four magical warriors who harness the power of the elements — earth, water, wind, and fire — with deadly chemistry. But is the Iron Knight, as he his known in the prophecy, strong enough to defy fate and turn back the malevolent forces hell-bent on earth's destruction?

My Thoughts:
While I did like the storyline of this movie... I didn't care for it nearly as much as I did the live action movie. I was a little surprised they retold the origins of Iron Man in this cartoon... this time taking place in China. I also didn't care for the idea of supernatural villains for Iron Man. Though I was happily surprised with the length of this one. As most of the animated superhero movies I have collected so far has been just barely over an hour... this one is closer to a normal movie... clocking in at almost an hour and a half. And the DVD has a nice little collection of extras as well.

The surviving members of the Malcolm Expedition return to Siam to try and stop the Scorpion's plans.

My Thoughts:
With this chapter watched... there is only two chapters left to watch. I enjoyed this chapter a lot. Even though he is a small man... they proved that Billy Batson is pretty tough in his own right. Unlike a lot of Superhero shows where the alter ego is usually portrayed as a weak good for nothing. They made it so Billy Batson does need to turn into Captain Marvel to handle every little problem. The cliffhanger in this episode while is a good one... the solution is very obvious.

Two years have passed since the mild-mannered Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) walked away from his longtime love Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and decided to take the road to responsibility as Spider-Man. Peter must face new challenges as he struggles to cope with "the gift and the curse" of his powers while balancing his dual identities as the elusive superhero Spider-Man and life as a college student. The relationships Peter holds most dear are now in danger of unraveling as he clashes with the powerful, multi-tentacled villain Doctor Octopus aka "Doc Ock" (Alfred Molina).

Peter's life-long yearning for M.J. becomes even stronger as he fights the impulse to abandon his secret life and declare his love. In the meantime, M.J. has moved on with her life. She has embarked on an acting career and has a new man in her life. Peter's relationship with his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco) has been overshadowed by Harry's growing vendetta against Spider-Man, whom he holds responsible for his father's death.

Peter's life becomes even more complicated when he is pitted against the powerful new nemesis, "Doc Ock." Peter must now learn to accept his fate and harness all his superhero talents in order to stop this diabolical madman in his octagonal tracks.

My Thoughts:
Even though I still enjoyed this movie very much... I never cared for it as much as the first one.... almost... but not as much. I don't like the whole storyline of Peter Parker loosing his ability for a while. And once again I don't like that so many people got to see Spider-Man without his mask on... which is something that I hate about all the Spider-Man movies (It been a long time... but if I remember right it also happens in part 3). The only person that I can accept seeing him without his mask is Mary Jane. To me that felt right. But Doc Ock, Harry and the train full of people shouldn't have happened. Well maybe Harry as it was really needed for the storyline. But that is it. Even though they never said it in the movie... you also get the feeling that Aunt May also knows about Peter being Spider-Man. I did however really enjoy seeing him go up against Doc Ock. I thought they did a good job with him. I also like that we see Professor Connor. I was hoping we would have the Lizard as a villain by the 3rd one... but unfortunately not meant to be. Maybe in the next one. I just hope they stop having him pull off his mask in front of everyone.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5
