Title: Christmas 2016

Christmas 2016
To try to get in the Christmas spirit a little.... I decided to start this marathon a little early. Granted I haven't liked Christmas much since my wife passed away right before many years ago. But I am really trying to get myself out of it. This year for the first time in years that I have actually been able to buy Christmas presents... though not able to spend much per person. So that does help the matter a little. I will be able to watch movies and wrap presents... just like I used to years ago. :)

For this marathon I will be watching movies and Christmas episodes from my DVD/Blu-ray collection... from Netflix... Amazon Prime... and Vudu. Not to mention some from Danae Cassandra's collection. So basically any way I find them! :P And let me tell you... I have many Christmas movies and TV episodes on disc alone... to many to list here. So I will have more then enough to watch... plus hope to get a few new ones added to my collection within the next month as well.

There will be no goal set on what to watch... though I may keep a running tally of how many of each I watch... possibly setting a goal for next year.

An incredible all-star cast shines in this deliriously funny comedy that "balances heart and humor" (Houston Chronicle) with a "sharp comic edge" (Rolling Stone)! Featuring Sarah Jessica Parker in a Golden Globe® -nominated* role, The Family Stone is "engaging, enticing [and] first-rate" (Los Angeles Times)!

Corporate executive Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker) is as uptight and ultra-conservative as her pin-striped designer suit. Her boyfriend Everett Stone's (Dermot Mulroney) family is as relaxed and quirky as their aging New England Colonial. So when Meredith ventures out of Manhattan to meet Everett's clan, it's no wonder her arrival is met with all the enthusiasm of a nasty Nor'easter. But one surprise guest, two shocking romances and several beers later, Meredith's icy exterior begins to thaw...and she may just melt the hearts of the Family Stone!

My Thoughts:

While I have had this film in my collection for years... this is the first time I ever got around to watching it. I found it to be an entertaining film that was well worth the time put in to watch it... but I found it to be very predictable. Too predictable really. But the journey to get to the ending I already seen coming a mile away is enjoyable. There is many big names in this one, which also added to the enjoyment.

My Thoughts:

This is one remake that was done very well. I liked the cast... the story kept your attention through-out... and makes for a great film for the entire family during the Christmas holiday. That being said I do prefer the original over this one. I liked how they did the court case in the origin more so then I did here. And I did find the whole marriage thing a little hard to swallow. That being said... I definitely recommend this film. I know I will watch it every year for my Christmas marathon.

A Very Brady Christmas
Mike and Carol Brady decide to spend their savings on bringing their kids and relatives in for the holidays, but the kids are having their own problems: Greg (now a doctor) has to make the trip alone since his wife Nora is spending the holidays with her family; Peter is embarrassed to bring his girlfriend home since she is his boss; Bobby is hiding the fact that he dropped out of business grad school to race cars; Marcia's husband, Wally, has been laid off from his job at Tyler Toys; Jan and stuffy husband Phillip are separating; and Cindy is tired of the fact that mom and dad can't respect her as a grown woman. Just another day in the life of the Bradys.

My Thoughts:
For some reason I like the Brady Bunch reunion movies more then I do the actual series. This one in particular. For some reason this movie gets me in the mood for Christmas. Something that has been difficult for me the past several years. Seeing a large family celebrating Christmas of my childhood Holidays where I was the youngest child of a large family. It was fun to see most of the cast back after all the years that past. The reunion movies in this complete series set is the main reason I bought the complete series set... instead of the individual seasons. Since that is the only way to get them.

Miracle on 34th Street
Year of Release: 1994
Directed By: Les Mayfield
Starring: Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins, Dylan McDermott, Mara Wilson
Genre: Drama

Overview:
In this modern update of the beloved 1947 film classic, six-year-old Susan has doubts about childhood's most enduring miracle — Santa Claus. But after meeting a special department store Santa who's convinced he's the real thing, Susan is given the most precious gift of all — something to believe in. Starring Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins, Dylan McDermott and Mara Wilson as Susan, this uplifting and joyous film will make believers out of the entire family!

My Thoughts:
This is a good remake, maybe one of the best remakes I've seen.  The original remains my favorite, but this is a worthy successor.  It mostly captures the warmth and heart of the original, and updating the story to focus on an independent store struggling against buyouts brings the modern world in.  Richard Attenborough and Mara Wilson turn in wonderful performances, and I rather liked Dylan McDermott as well.

On the other hand, I never bought into the romance between McDermott and Elizabeth Perkins.  She comes off so very emotionally distant that it's frankly hard to understand why his character believes they are at the point of marriage proposals.  Equally, the court case is much better handled in the original film.

All that aside, this is still a very enjoyable Christmas movie and I would add it to my Christmas film rotation.  Don't know that I'm with Pete for watching it every year; I'll probably mix it up with the original the way I do with versions of A Christmas Carol.  But I certainly wouldn't mind adding it to my collection.

Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Adam Scott (TV's Parks and Recreation), Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine), Allison Tolman (TV's Fargo) and David Koechner (Anchorman), this is a wonderfully dark and subversive "must-see film." - WEGOTTHISCOVERED.COM

My Thoughts:

Going by the trailer I wasn't sure what I would think of this one. But I must say... I enjoyed it more then I thought I would. It has a mixture of horror and comedy that I found a bit silly but entertaining. Some of the characters did get on my nerves a bit. And the ending was a little out there... but over all was worth the time put in to watch it. I definitely can see myself watching it again.

My Thoughts:

Ok... what did I think of this one? Jenny McCarthy... in some scenes I liked her... but yet in others it felt like she could have done better. I was surprised that I liked George Wendt as Santa. Don't get me wrong... I always liked George Wendt... he is always fun to watch... but for some reason he doesn't pop to my mind when I think of Santa. The movie was enough to keep my interest... even fun in parts. But I don't think it will become one of my favorites. I did however enjoy it enough to want to get a hold of the sequel. And yes... I can see myself watching it again. More or less an average film.

I found this one to be entertaining... and a little different then most Christmas movies as you really don't get to see Santa himself all that much... and even the one short scene he is on the screen he has no dialog. My Thoughts:

While Mr. Magoo does hold a nostalgic place in my heart... this is not one of my favorite Christmas specials. I mean it is ok and I do want to add this one to my own collection eventually as well. But to me this special wasn't all that. I think my main problem with this one is that it is way too much music... and at least some of the songs that are in it is in it more then once. Which I think is a little much when it comes to a show that is less then an hour long.

This is one I forgot about for the longest time. Had it in my collection for about 3 years before I finally got to watch it. It is one that was recommended by my daughter. For some reason I went into it a little hesitant... but in the end I found I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is really a fun film... but it also has it's share of action. I liked the different takes they did on all the different legendaries. At first I was a little taken aback with this Santa... but he quickly grew on me. This is definitely a film I am comfortable recommending.

My Thoughts:

While still enjoyable... this one wasn't as good as the first one. I was sorry to see they replaced George Wendt as Santa. But from what I could tell the rest of the cast from the first one had returned. It is fun enough that I can see myself watching it each year... but won't be one of my favorites.

My Thoughts:

This has become a yearly tradition for me. This guy is just freaking hilarious! I really liked all his characters... my favorite is a toss-up between Achmed and Peanut. I wasn't expecting to like a ventriloquist as much as I liked this one but this Jeff Dunham special is just filled with laughs. The show is as good on multiple viewings as it is the first time you seen it. If you never checked this guy out before... I highly recommend it!

The Night Before Christmas
The Night Before Christmas is a 1933 American Pre-Code animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by United Artists. Part of the Silly Symphony series, the film is an adaptation of Clement Clarke Moore's poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, popularly called The Night Before Christmas. The film was directed by Disney animator Wilfred Jackson.

St. Nick is seen delivering the toys that he made in Disney's Santa's Workshop (1932) to a house full of sleeping children. The toys come alive, and they dance around and have fun. The kids awake to find a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of toys.

My Thoughts:
This is an extra on the blu-ray of The Santa Claus. It is cute enough that made it worth the time put in to watch it. But nothing all that special. Just an average animated short from way back when.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Year of Release: 1964
Directed By: Larry Roemer
Starring: Burl Ives, Larry Mann, Billy Richards, Paul Soles, Stan Francis
Genre: Fantasy, Musical, Animation, Television

Overview:
Do you remember when... Rudolph visited the Island of Misfit Toys, and Santa asked Rudolph to guide his sleigh on Christmas Eve? Share the magic of this Original Christmas Classic told and sung by Burl Ives!

My Thoughts:
This was THE Christmas special when I was a kid. It was the one I searched for in the TV Guide, eagerly making sure I had control of the TV for that hour on that day. But all three generations of our family would gather round to watch. I haven't missed a year since the 70's, and this still holds up perfectly.  The blu-ray has beautiful color and clarity, and is well worth the upgrade for those who still have this on DVD.

Prep & Landing / Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice
Year of Release: 2009 / 2011
Directed By: Stevie Wermers-Skelton, Kevin Deters
Starring: Dave Foley, Derek Richardson, Sarah Chalke, Rob Riggle
Genre: Comedy, Animation, Television

Overview:
PREP & LANDING
On Christmas Eve, a high-tech team of elves from an elite unit known as 'Prep & Landing' ensures homes around the world are prepared for Santa's visit. But when two hilarious little elves face unexpected challenges and are pushed to their limits, it'll take a great big effort to save the season. Enjoy a heartwarming holiday classic sure to make everyone's Christmas list!

PREP & LANDING: NAUGHTY VS. NICE
The outrageous yuletide adventures of Christmas elves Lanny and Wayne continue in this totally tinsel adventure that reminds us there's room for everyone on the 'nice' list. Santa's stealthiest little elves must race to recover classified North Pole technology, which has fallen into the hands of a computer-hacking naughty kid, in order to stop Christmas from descending into chaos. Bring the family together for a comical adventure that puts the Ho, Ho, Ho in your holidays!

My Thoughts:
PREP & LANDING
This is a modern Christmas classic for us. I love this little special, from stressed-out McGee, to hyper excited Lanny, to cynical Wayne discovering the joy of Christmas again, to Tiny, who manages to have a character despite only seeing the top of the hat. Perfect watch every year for the season.
PREP & LANDING: NAUGHTY VS. NICE
Much as I love the first Prep and Landing, I think I actually like this one a little more. I really like the story of Wayne and his brother, and the coal elves are such fun characters (especially Carol). Like the original, this is another modern Christmas classic for us, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
PREP & LANDING: OPERATION SECRET SANTA
Cute, short cartoon of Wayne & Lanny helping out Mrs. Claus. It's a neat little mission snapshot, and you can watch it in the special features of the blu-ray if you're a fan.
PREP & LANDING: TINY'S BIG ADVENTURE
Cute, short cartoon in the Prep and Landing universe featuring the struggles of the shortest elf in her quest to make coffee for McGee. Watch this in the blu-ray special features if you're a fan.

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol
Year of Release: 1962
Directed By: Abe Levitow
Starring: Jim Backus, Morey Amsterdam, Jack Cassidy, Royal Dano, Paul Frees
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Musical, Animation, Television

Overview:
In this seasonal Charles Dickens' tale, the bumbling and lovable Mr. Magoo is Ebeneze Scrooge. Remember the hilarious and heartwarming story of how Mr. Scrooge transforms after a visit from Christmas past, present, and future. This Original Christmas Classic is a must-have for the holidays!

My Thoughts:
Not the worst version of A Christmas Carol that I've seen, but close to it. If Mr. Magoo doesn't make a bad version of Scrooge, the reordering of the ghostly visits, and the elimination of Fan and his nephew sit hard with me. There's also a lot of music for as short as this special is. I love musicals, but there's a need for more story here, and less razzleberry dressing.

Overall, I'd say this is more for fans of Magoo than fans of A Christmas Carol. As far as cartoon versions of the story for kids, Mickey's Christmas Carol is much, much better.

Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas: Live from Dublin
Year of Release: 2013
Directed By: Russell Thomas
Starring:  Susan McFadden, Lisa Lambe, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, Máiréad Nesbitt
Genre: Music

Overview:
The concert features timeless holiday favorites (Silent Night, I'll Be Home for Christmas, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Joy To The World) with the group's signature Celtic Woman flair under the distinct musical direction of Emmy-nominated Music Director, David Downes. HOME FOR CHRISTMAS- LIVE FROM DUBLIN is a visual and aural feast under the direction of Russell Thomas and filmed at Dublin's Helix Theatre. Complimented by Ireland's finest musicians comprised of a 36 piece orchestra and 40-member Philharmonic Choir, this large-scale one-hour production promises a festive and moving celebration of music to be cherished by generations. The Blu-ray also features 15 minutes of bonus material of intimate, acoustic performances to Away In A Manger, The Christmas Song, In The Bleak Midwinter and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

My Thoughts:
This is another lovely concert from Celtic Woman. I love Máiréad Nesbitt's fiddle. If I miss some of the members from 2007's Christmas Celebration, and if I do still like that one just a wee bit more, the new members also have beautiful voices. Recommended if you've enjoyed their music before, or just enjoy carols.

Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree
Year of Release: 1995
Directed By: Jon Stone
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Leslie Nielsen, Stockard Channing, Kevin Clash, David Rudman, Julianne Buescher
Genre: Comedy, Television

Overview:
A single Christmas tree becomes the source of cheer for the people and animals living around Mr. Willowby's estate. Based on the children's book of the same name.

My Thoughts:
More Muppets and less RDJ than I was hoping, but this was still a fun Christmas special. The mice are actually the stars here, but Downey is having quite a bit of fun with his character and Leslie Nielsen garners more than one smile as the straight-laced butler who's sweet on the upstairs maid. I'd actually have rather seen more of those characters, and not only because I like Downey so much.

Recommended if you're a fan of the Muppets, and don't mind watching a grainy version of this on youtube. Also recommended if you're a big fan of RDJ like I am, but you'll be disappointed by how little you see of him.

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas
Year of Release: 1977
Directed By: Jim Henson
Starring: Jerry Nelson, Jerry Nelson, Frank Oz, Marilyn Sokol, Dave Goelz
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Musical, Television

Overview:
In Frogtown Hollow, live Emmet and Ma Otter: a family with little money, but lots of love. With Christmas coming, they want very much to buy each other a store-bought gift – but are barely scraping by doing odd jobs. When a local talent contest offers a special prize, Emmet must make a sacrifice to join his Jug-Band for the competition. Will the Jug-Band prevail or will fierce competition from the Riverbottom Gang steal the show – and the prize?

My Thoughts:
This a deceptively sweet Christmas special. It's about a widowed mother otter and her only son risking everything to win enough money to buy the other a Christmas present. Paul Williams puts together some good 70's folk/bluegrass inspired songs. The Muppets are cute and memorable, and even the minor characters have a surprising amount of personality.

It's also surprisingly dark, and though things turn out well for the Otters, it so easily couldn't have. After all, Alice and Emmet have destroyed their ability to earn a livelihood in the hope of a monetary show of love for the other. For me that impracticability mars an otherwise wonderful little special.

Arthur Christmas
Year of Release: 2011
Directed By: Sarah Smith
Starring: James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Ashley Jensen
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Animation

Overview:
How CAN Santa deliver billions of presents to the whole world in just one night? With an army of one million combat-style Field Elves and a vast, state-of-the-art control center under the ice of the North Pole! So how could this incredible operation have MISSED one child?! To Santa's young son, Arthur, it threatens to end the magic of Christmas. With retired Grandsanta, a rebellious young elf, an old sleigh and some untrained reindeer, Arthur sets out in a crazy mission to deliver the last present! Deck the halls with excitement, fun and wonder in this new Christmas classic!

My Thoughts:
This was a great, fun movie for the season. For being 5 years old now, the CGI still looks really good. The heart of the film is the relationships between the members of the Santa family, and the characters are pretty well fleshed for an animated film. It has a good story and lots of humor to keep it going as well. This has made it into my yearly rotation, and would be a good addition to the collection of any Christmas movie fan or any family with children.

White Christmas
Year of Release: 1954
Directed By: Michael Curtiz
Starring: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, Dean Jagger
Genre: Romance, Musical

Overview:
White Christmas is a treasury of Irving Berlin classics, among them "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," "Sisters," "Mandy," and the beloved holiday song, "White Christmas." In this incredible Anniversary Edition, you will find the timeless musical, plus new features that include backstage stories, a look at the actors and more!

Two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. One winter, they join forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) and trek to Vermont for a white Christmas. Of course, there's the requisite fun with the ladies, but the real adventure starts when Crosby & Kaye discover that the inn is run by their old army general who's now in financial trouble. And the result is the stuff dreams are made of.

My Thoughts:
This is a true Christmas classic.  It's everything you want in a Christmas film - bright and cheery, romantic, and warm-hearted, more than a touch sentimental, and it has an old-fashioned charm to it that's hard to replicate in films today.  I love Bing Crosby, and his rendition of "White Christmas" is still the standard, despite how many people have recorded it.  I love Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney here too (she's from my home state!), and Vera Ellen does a good job as well.  The heart of the film is Dean Jagger's general, and he's a sweetheart.

In short, frothy, fun, and filled with wonderful songs and Christmas spirit, this will continue to be one of the best Christmas films for years to come.

This one has some good, funny moments... but it isn't one that will become a favorite. I mean it is worth the time put in to watch it but not one that I will feel the need to watch every year. Rise of the Guardians
Year of Release: 2012
Directed By: Peter Ramsey
Starring: Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Animation

Overview:
DreamWorks' newest animated adventure is a fun-filled and magical story about the legendary guardians - Jack Frost, the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and Sandman - together for the first time! When the evil Pitch threatens to take over the world, it's up to our beloved heroes to protect the hopes and dreams of children everywhere. Filled with non-stop action and laughs, it's a dazzling family film that's being hailed as "an instant classic. You will believe."

My Thoughts:
I thought this was really pretty good. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, and some of the details are simply beautiful. The frosting effects Jack does are so well done, as are Sandy's dreams. I enjoyed all of the characters, from Russian Santa, to badass Aussie Easter Bunny, to sweet little Sandy. Jack's a bit more predictable character archetype (lonely, brooding teen), but he makes a good protagonist for a kids film. Pitch makes a very suave villain, especially with Jude Law's voice behind him.

The plot is pretty predictable though ... but that can be said of almost every movie out there aimed at the younger audience. But that doesn't ruin the enjoyment or charm of the movie. This may likely make it into rotation for holiday films, provided room can be found. Just a really fun film.

The Year Without a Santa Claus
Year of Release: 1974
Directed By: Arthur Rankin Jr., Jules Bass
Starring: Shirley Booth, Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn, George S. Irving
Genre: Fantasy, Animation, Television

Overview:
From Rankin/Bass studios come three sparkingly remastered holiday favorites boasting delightful stop-motion animation, catchy songs and family-pleasing stories. Headlining the trio is The Year Without a Santa Claus, in which wearry St. Nick (voiced by Mickey Rooney) forgoes his holiday gift-giving journey, leaving Mrs. Claus (Shirley Booth) and two elves to revive the Christmas spirit in Santa and the world's children.

My Thoughts:
I think we can all agree the Miser brothers are the stars here. Their introduction songs are the most fun parts of the film, and they are the best characters. I always love the scene of "It's Gonna Snow Right Here in Dixie" as well. Mrs. Claus' "I Could Be Santa Claus" and the song around the table in Southtown, "I Believe in Santa Claus" are also good.

However, the parts with Jingle and Jangle are kind of painful. I know they're supposed to be silly characters, but the exaggerated voices come off more stupid than silly to me.

Those two aside, this is a Christmas classic for us, and the Misers make it worth seeing every year.

A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa
Year of Release: 2009
Directed By: Kirk R. Thatcher
Starring: Kermit the Frog, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, Rizzo, Pepe the King Prawn
Genre: Comedy, Television

Overview:
Celebrate the season with all your favorite Muppets in this heartwarming and hilarious holiday movie. Whoopi Goldberg, Uma Thurman, Nathan Lane and other sensational guest stars join our friends on a fun-filled Christmas adventure full of sidesplitting laughs and memorable music.

When Gonzo forgets to mail three letters to Santa, he convinces Kermit and the gang to help him deliver the notes to the North Pole. Along the way, they discover that Christmas is the time to be with those you care about most, as they dash home to make a friend's Christmas wish come true. Bursting with bonus material and never-before-seen footage, A Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa is hours of holiday fun for the entire family!

My Thoughts:
This is a pretty average Muppets special. It's cute, Paul Williams puts together a couple of good songs, and the Muppet performers give it their all ... but the main story is fairly dull, and the human performers aren't anywhere near the Muppets in their performances. Yes, you watch a Muppet movie for the Muppets, but the humans could have been a lot better.

Not bad for Muppet fans, but not in the same league as The Muppet Christmas Carol. Not sorry I watched it, but it won't make the yearly rotation.

The Heart of Christmas
Year of Release: 2011
Directed By: Gary Wheeler
Starring: Candace Cameron Bure, Jeanne Neilson, Christopher Shone, Nicholas Shone, Eric Beck
Genre: Drama

Overview:
Based on a true story of hope and compassion, The Heart Of Christmas will touch your heart and bring home the spirit of the holidays. Austin and Julie Locke are devastated when they learn that their young son, Dax, has been diagnosed with cancer. But with courage, determination and faith, they decide to give Dax a one last Christmas, even if it has to be in October. The Heart Of Christmas is the greatest gift of all.

My Thoughts:
This is a good story with a great message, done with competent actors who do their best with what they've been given. You can tell everyone had their heart in making the film, and really had a lot of empathy for Dax's story. It's quite the tearjerker, but it's also a heartwarming story, as all these people come together to support this family.

I just wish it was a better movie. I had some issues with the filmmaking choices. That's not to say that the film is bad ... but the technique could have been better. When I was working on my creative writing, I was always told "show, don't tell." Well, this film does a lot of telling. Most of the film is in flashback, and it has a framing story of a career mom reading the blog Dax's mom writes. I would have rather seen the film told linear, as the story of the family with their son. While I understand what they're going for with it, I really felt it was unnecessary. The message of cherishing each moment, and how the lives of one family can influence others, could come through just fine without the frame.

Still, I enjoyed the film and would recommend it if it sounds like one you'd enjoy. Be prepared for some tears, and some Christianity. I won't say it's a faith film, but it's close. It wasn't preachy, so it didn't offend this non-Christian. Your milage may vary.

I did like the film's message, so I had to go listen to "Another Day" from Rent after watching this film. There is no future / There is no past / I live this moment as my last / There's only us / There's only this / Forget regret / Or life is yours to miss / No other road / No other way / No day but today

The Polar Express
Year of Release: 2004
Directed By: Robert Zemeckis
Starring: Tom Hanks, Leslie Zemeckis, Eddie Deezen, Nona Gaye, Peter Scolari
Genre: Fantasy, Animation

Overview:
All the enchantment, all the joy of The Polar Express — all in amazing 3-D**! This instant holiday classic filmed in performance-capture animation by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks now delivers a whole new dimension of coming-at-you Blu-ray magic. And there's more: a two-dimenson Blu-ray version for you to enjoy without your 3-D glasses. Twice the adventure, many times the fun — all aboooooard!

My Thoughts:
A personal favorite, and just about my favorite modern (post 1980) Yuletide film (the other being Tokyo Godfathers). This is a film that really puts me in the Yuletide spirit.

The animation falls into two categories: absolutely stunning visuals and somewhat off-looking people. I expect the people problem is because of the limits of early mocap, and I find that each year I watch the film I notice less and less that the people don't move right. The environment, however, is brilliantly realized and absolutely magnificent. When we saw this at the IMAX in 3D, the sequences where the train goes downhill on the tracks are fabulous.  The use of movement in the film always strikes me, even watching this in 2D.  I'd love to see it up on the big screen again.

I also really enjoy the characters, especially the girl in the group. She's refreshingly different from most female characters in American animation, breaking stereotypes and being the leader of the group that she is. But all of the main child characters are portrayed rather realistically, which I like.

A modern holiday classic - recommended without reservation.

And I do think the entire cast did a wonderful job. Sure the entire movie was predictable. Especially if you are a fan of romantic comedies. But sometimes it isn't all about the ending... it's the journey that matters. I recommend checking it out if you like romantic comedies.

Overview:
The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, is a timeless holiday story of a young runaway who has broken into an old movie palace, looking for shelter on a snow filled Christmas Eve. A Charlie Brown Christmas
Year of Release: 1965
Directed By: Bill Melendez
Starring: Peter Robbins, Christopher Shea, Tracy Stratford, Bill Melendez, Chris Doran
Genre: Comedy, Animation, Television

Overview:
Christmastime is here. Happiness and cheer. And for Peanuts fans everywhere, it just wouldn't be Christmas without this classic holiday delight. Lights may twinkle red and green, but Charlie Brown has the Yuletide blues. To get in the holiday spirit, he takes Lucy's advice and directs the Christmas play. And what's a Christmas play without a Christmas tree? But everyone makes fun of the short, spindly nevergreen Charlie Brown brings back – until the real meaning of Christmas works its magic once again.

My Thoughts:
One of the few true pieces of Christmas perfection.  Everything about this little special is made of win.  The music is now part of the canon.  We can see a bit of us in each of the kids.  Who hasn't been depressed about this time of year, wondering with all the commercialism what the true meaning is?  Who hasn't been upset that they don't get what they want?  Or that they aren't going to get their fair share?

It's also the innocence of childhood that makes this a perfect piece of Christmas.  Dancing just for the joy of it, catching snowflakes on your tongue, ice skating.  Snoopy is the embodiment of this.  He celebrates every moment, has fun and enjoys himself, and only stops when the others eye him disapprovingly (dancing on the piano).  We should all be more like Snoopy.

Despite the amusing bits and a bit of sharp dialog - and Peppermint Patty as the sheep is pretty funny - this special doesn't come close to the original's classic charm. Then again, nothing really can. It's still a cute Peanuts cartoon, though.

A Christmas Carol
Year of Release: 1999
Directed By: David Jones
Starring: Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Joel Grey, Ian McNeice
Genre: Drama

Overview:
Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: The Next Generation) stars as Scrooge, the mean-spirited miser who gets his terrifying comeuppance when he imagines he's visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and taken on a life-altering journey. Spellbinding special effects, a star-studded cast, and a timeless holiday story make this brilliant presentation of Dickens' classic the most heartwarming, compelling and powerful adaptation ever filmed.

My Thoughts:
This is as fine an adaptation of A Christmas Carol as any in this old world. If I still prefer the 1951 Alaister Sim version, this is my second favorite. Patrick Stewart is an excellent Scrooge, and I actually prefer the Cratchets here over the '51. The ghosts are very well done, and the story adapts closely. I'd have liked to see more of Scrooge's relationship with Fran, since her death is so crucial in his story. Still such a good retelling of this familiar tale, very much worth the time put in to watch it.

This was a wonderful breath of fresh air after the exceedingly mediocre Magoo Christmas Carol we watched earlier in the month.  Still falls a bit shy next to Sim's.  It might be the nostalgia of Sim's version, since that was the one we used to watch on TV when I was a kid.  I really need to watch them both back to back.  I also really wish I had this on blu-ray.
