Title: Alphabet Marathon: The Unwatched Version
Post by: addicted2dvd on August 13, 2011, 04:09:13 PM
Alphabet Marathon: The Unwatched Version
I was looking over my Unwatched DVD collection... and was surprised to see I have 877 movies in my collection that I haven't watched yet. There is some titles that I have seen the movie... but not since getting the DVD.

I also noticed that I have something for almost every letter. So I thought this would be a perfect time to start an Alphabet Marathon. This isn't a marathon I expect to have done in a weekend of course... not even in a week. But I do want to try to have it completed before I start my annual Horror marathon in October.

Like I said... I have everything covered except 1 letter. That is the letter X. So I am hoping I will get that taken care of before I get to it.

My Thoughts:
Before watching this movie I searched some reviews to see what others thought of it. I was actually surprised... seems like most people didn't care for this one. Until today I just remembered hearing good things. Then I actually watched it. I wouldn't say I disliked it as much as most the people seemed to... but it is far from the best movie of it's kind. The effects were definitely cool. But I found for the most part I really didn't care about many of the characters. I also thought it was just too long. I think this is one case where the movie would have been better if they didn't have it at such a length. Over-all I would say it is just an average disaster movie.

Whatever you do don't watch Ally Farson: Confessed Murderess: "My Private Life". Sorority is Oscar worthy compared to this one.

Do yourself a favor and throw the DVD away and keep the case.

Which version of Alfie do you own? The original w/ Michael Caine and Shelly Winters or the one with Jude Law?

I would probably suggest either Apocalypto or  American History X.

 Well I won't toss it just yet. But I won't be in any hurry to watch it either.

It's the original.

I would probably suggest either Apocalypto or  American History X.

Thanks... but kinda feel in the mood for a comedy. Haven't decided yet... but may watch American Wedding.

American Sweethearts is another possibility.

I will probably watch the trailers and decide from there.

My Thoughts:
I felt like something fun and completely silly next... yes even to the point of the crude and the sick. And much like the first two... this has all of the above. There was more then one laugh in this movie for me... but at the same time some things went a little far for my taste. But of course that could be because I watched the Unrated version instead of the theatrical release... which is also on this disc. Over-all I enjoyed this movie. But I know it is definitely not for everyone. It is one I am sure some would find offensive.

But... but it's Michael Caine!  :puke:
:o

Is it because of Jaws 4...? Any idea why you dislike him, or is that feeling "just there"?

Caine got heaps of respect from me for saying this: He is a family one with mouths to feed. So he needs jobs and of someone offers him money to be in a film, he'll be in it. He gets good money, he'll do his best. He gets little money, he'll only act a little. Hence, Jaws 4, The Hand, the Killer Bees, etc...

My suggestion for B: Benji

I honestly don't think I've ever heard anyone say they have issues with Michael Caine before.

Wait a minute....if you dislike him so much, how do you deal with him in Miss Congeniality?

I just always disliked him... don't know why. And was from way before I ever seen Jaws 4. And what can I say... I love Miss Congeniality despite how I dislike him. I guess how much I love Sandra Bullock allows me to ignore that he is in it.

Stars:

Queen Latifah as Charlene Morton
Eugene Levy as Howie Rottman
Joan Plowright as Mrs. Arness
Jean Smart as Kate
Kimberly J. Brown as Sarah Sanderson

Plot:
The hilarious Steve Martin (Father Of The Bride) and Academy Award® nominee Queen Latifah* (Chicago) star with Eugene Levy (American Pie) in the laugh-out-loud hit comedy Bringing Down the House. Peter Sanderson (Martin), a divorced, straitlaced, uptight, workaholic attorney, meets a brainy, bombshell lawyer in an online chat room and they make a date. Expecting his soul mate, he opens the door and finds himself face-to-face with Charlene (Latifah) — a wild and crazy soul sister who's just escaped from prison and wants Peter to clear her name. But Peter wants absolutely nothing to do with her, and that prompts Charlene to turn Peter's perfectly ordered life totally upside down. Hysterical complications abound and Peter soon finds out he may need Charlene just as much as she needs him. It's a houseful of fun your family will enjoy again and again.

*Best Supporting Actress, Chicago, 2002

Extras:

My Thoughts:
I decided to watch this one next because today (8/14) is Steve Martin's 66th birthday. So wanted to watch something with him in it I haven't seen before... this was the only thing I had left that I haven't watched yet. It isn't a bad comedy... but there really isn't anything special about it either. I would say it is worth watching... but at the same time it isn't something I see watching very often. Over-all just an average comedy with a couple chuckles in it.

I want to vote Dreamgirls, The Doors or Dirty Dancing just because you need more music in your life!

I would go with something you haven't seen - knock one off your unwatched pile too.

I like the following because they are based on actual events and people:

Dreamers is quite good - it has lots of sex though so watch it before letting Brit see it.

My Thoughts:
I been curios about checking this one out since it was given to me a few months back. For the past week or so my daughter Brittany has been watching the anime series... and raving about it... which renewed my curiosity on the movies. So I figured this was the perfect chance to watch the first one.

I must say... I enjoyed this movie very much. I got a kick out of how they did the Shinigami in this movie and hope to see him as part of the sequel. Though I don't know why he wouldn't be. I found Light to be an interesting character. A person that was actually a bit darker then the first impression they gave us. Now when it came to "L"... I thought he was a bit on the strange side... but not so strange it took away from the character or story. He does seem to have some weird fascination with food.

As I said... over-all I enjoyed every minute of this one. It easily kept my attention from beginning to end. Definitely one I feel comfortable recommending to others. I am looking forward to the sequel... though I think I am going to try to save it for another day instead of jumping right into it.

Now, the detective finds himself in a deadly race against time to prevent this modern vampiress from claiming another victim in this supernatural thriller inspired by actual events.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
I decided to check this one out today because I felt like watching a horror movie I haven't seen yet. And the plot of this one sounded interesting at least. And it saying that this story was "Inspired by Actual Events" didn't hurt. I went in knowing it could go either way. While I enjoyed this one... it's slow pace did lessen the enjoyment some. Though it still has a good story. I would really like to see another (preferably a little better) movie inspired by Countess Elizabeth Bathory. I have heard of her story before... but this is the first movie I have seen dealing with her.

My Thoughts:
I felt like a little classic comedy today. And sense I never seen very much of Laurel and Hardy... I thought this was the perfect time to check out this movie. Not a bad movie... got a few chuckles out of me. But I was expecting more... after all... this is Laurel and Hardy... one of the best known classic comedic duos.  But I don't know... they don't seem to rank up there with Abbott & Costello... at least not in my opinion.

Even me, probably the biggest collector in my city, own "only" 1766 movies

For my total collection I am up to 2,782... and that is counting all boxsets (Movies and TV Series) as 1. So even something like that 100 classic horror movies set I have is only counted as 1 title. :P

I do the same, I write 0 in the "count as" in the personalize dvd section. I suppose they don't appear in the total this way

Extras:

My Thoughts:
Until this movie was given to me I didn't even know they made it. But I was pretty excited when it was offered to me as I did enjoy the first one (My Review for The Glass House (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,6590.msg121506.html#msg121506)). So I went into this one hoping for a good movie. And I feel I definitely got that. It has been a while since I saw the first one. But I think this is one of those rare cases where I enjoyed this one a bit more then the first one. I never heard of the actress that played the teen girl (Jordan Hinson) in this one... but the one that played her little brother (Bobby Coleman) looked rather familiar to me. Turns out he was in the short lived TV Series Surface. I was a little concerned since I never hear of her before... but Jordan Hinson did a fine job in the role. Bobby Coleman done a fine job as well... but his part really was much smaller. I also liked Angie Harmon in the role of "The Good Mother." I would definitely say this one is worth checking out.

Kyle Clements as Bub

Plot:

Upon their arrival they find a foreboding house with a mind of its own, and as darkness falls, the house begins to kill the crew one by one. With time running out, will they be able to outwit this terror and make it out alive?

Extras:

My Thoughts:
I have forgotten about this one when I bought it... but I did indeed see this movie before. When it originally aired on the Syfy Channel back in January 2010. I got this one mainly because I like Charisma Carpenter. The movie is better then I was expecting it to be. Sure some of the effects were cheesy... and there was some predictable stuff in it. But I definitely enjoyed it. Charisma Carpenter plays a psychic that joins one of those shows where they go off investigating supposedly haunted houses called Sinister Sites. On her very first episode they end up in the "real thing". While it may not be the best haunted house movie I ever seen... I am glad I added it to my collection. It's worth the time put into it to watch it.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
This one I enjoyed quite a bit. It is a little on the slow side for my normal taste... but it worked for this one. The story kept my attention through-out. Even if it could have been a little shorter. I am not very good when it comes to accents... but something seemed a little off with Nicole Kidman's accent in this one. Otherwise I thought she did a terrific job. Sean Penn is usually pretty hit or miss with me. In this one I thought he did a very good job. Over-all I found it to be a very good movie. One I feel more then comfortable recommending. Though it is also one I can't see myself watching too often.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
This is an Abbott & Costello movie I never seen before... but not surprising since it is a musical. I been in the mood to watch an Abbott & Costello movie for a while now. This movie comes in a Mill Creek Entertainment 20 movie set—Family Pack—which usually tells me that the expected quality can be anywhere from Very Good to God Awful. In this case the quality of this movie is in very good condition.... considering the movie is 59 years old. Though there is a little dust and scratches on the film. As for the movie itself... I must admit I am a little on the disappointed side here. Not only because of all the music... but also because the usual laughs I get from an Abbott and Costello movie just isn't found here.

My Thoughts:
Hmmm... What did I think of this one? I enjoyed it enough that it kept my interest through-out the entire movie. But at the same time... it is far from a great movie. It is a pretty good story. But some of the acting could have been better. Over-all I would say it is worth a watch... not so sure about it being worth a purchase. I would say only if you can get it very cheap. Plot:
Drive through downtown Chicago. Blindfolded. Care for two screaming, slobbering, creepy-looking babies. Robot babies. Give up sex. Yes, even that. Oh, the things Rev. Frank has you do before you say "I do!"

Robin Williams, Mandy Moore and John Krasinski headline this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy about a young couple eager to walk down the aisle and the bride's minister, who aims to lower the divorce rate by busting up incompatible twosomes before the shoes and rice. Sign up for Rev. Frank's marriage preparation course. It's tougher than boot camp. And a whole lot funnier!

Extras:

My Thoughts:
The first time I watched this movie it was on On Demand... and I wasn't very impressed with it at all. It felt like it wasn't the old Robin Williams that I have been a fan of for all these years. After watching the DVD today (which was given to me) I feel I was a bit harsh on it the first time I watched it. I still don't think it was a great movie. That there should have been some of the old zany Robin Williams in it... but it is definitely better then I remembered it being.I said the first time I watched it that I didn't like the little boy that was supposed to be the Reverend's protege. That I found him annoying. And while that is still the case... he didn't seem as annoying this time as he was for me the first time I saw it. So with all that said I am glad I gave this movie a second chance. Though it still could have been better.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
This is of course the sequel to Meet the Parents... a movie I always liked a lot. But it is the first time I ever got the chance to watch this one. While I did enjoy it.... I found it to be a good comedy... I don't think it is at the same level as Meet the Parents. It definitely didn't have as many laughs for me.... but there is a few in here. I did like Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Greg's parents.  Though I will admit that I was a bit worried when I saw them in the trailer. Not worried about the actors...  but more worried on how they did the characters, It seemed a little over the top to me. But once watching the movie I found I was concerned for nothing.  It seemed to work well for the movie. Basically I think if you enjoyed the first one... while not quite as good... you should enjoy this one as well.

My Thoughts:
This is the first time I watched this movie. It is a nice family movie.... geared a little more towards the kids then adults. But entertaining all the same. It was pretty predictable... as I had the movie basically figured out within the first 15 minutes. Even with that I enjoyed watching the story get there. Before putting this one on I asked Brittany if she wanted to watch it with me... but she turned me down. Said she saw the trailer and it really didn't interest her. I wish she would have given it a chance. I think she may have enjoyed it as well.

My Thoughts:
This is the first time I ever seen this movie. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is kind of a quirky type comedy. There is a few people in this one that I am familiar with from different TV series. Of course there is Jennifer Aniston from Friends. Then there is Diedrich Bader who was in The Drew Carey Show. I aslo noticed John C. McGinley from Scrubs had a small part. And finally there is Gary Cole who starred in American Gothic. This isn't the type of movie that makes me literally laugh out loud... but it is one I found very entertaining. Definitely worth checking out.

My Thoughts:
This is the first time I ever seen this movie. And I must say... I enjoyed every minute of it. Very good story... loaded with action... and even has a chuckle or two (thinking the fight with that huge Russian here). I never read any of the comics... so don't know how the movie compares to them. But if this movie is pretty close to the comics I wouldn't mind reading a few. I highly recommend this one if you never seen it.

(http://www.invelos.com/mpimages/02/027616865816f.jpg)      Quigley Down Under: Western Legends (1990/United States)

(http://www.invelos.com/images/DVDLogo.png)MGM Home Entertainment
Director:Simon Wincer
Writing:John Hill (Writer)
Length:120 min.
Rating:PG-13
Video:Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1
Audio:English: Dolby Digital: Dolby Surround, Spanish: Dolby Digital: Mono, French: Dolby Digital: Dolby Surround
Subtitles:French, Spanish

Stars:
Tom Selleck as Matthew Quigley
Laura San Giacomo as Crazy Cora
Alan Rickman as Elliott Marston
Chris Haywood as Major Ashley-Pitt
Ron Haddrick as Grimmelman
Tony Bonner as Dobkin

Plot:
Tom Selleck gives the boldest performance of his career in this "new style, revisionist western with the panoramic scope of a movie epic" (Los Angeles Times). Fierce gunfights, forbidding landscapes, breakneck chases – all hallmarks of the classic western – are reinvented in this hard-pounding actioner that "revitalizes the genre" and comes out "a sure winner" (The Hollywood Reporter).

Arriving in Australia with nothing more than a saddle and his prized six-foot Sharps rifle, American sharpshooter Matthew Quigley thinks he's been hired to kill off wild dogs. But when he realizes instead, that his mission is murder – to "eliminate" the Aborigines from a wealthy cattle baron's land – Quigley refuses and quickly turns from hunter to hunted. Forced to wage a savage war against his former employer, Quigley proves that no one gets the best of a steely-eyed American gunfighter – no one, that is, except the mysterious beauty (Laura San Giacomo, sex, lies, & videotape) who rides by his side and captures his heart.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
While I have seen this movie before... it hasn't been since it was originally released on VHS.... a good 20 years ago. So needless to say there wasn't much about this movie that I remembered. Basically like seeing it again for the first time. All I really remembered from it is that I enjoyed it quite a bit. And that proved to be true today. I enjoyed every minute of the storyline. And also enjoyed Tom Selleck in the role of Quigley as well. Which did surprise me in a way. I never minded him as an actor... but at the same time he isn't someone I ever thought of when I tried to think of good actors either. I always been the type of person that enjoys a good Western... but only when I am in the mood to watch one... which seemed to come seldomly. But while I really wasn't that much in the mood for one today... I still enjoyed it quite a bit. This is one I would recommend to anyone. Even if Westerns isn't your favorite genre.

Michael is critically injured in a tragic jet crash, and Dr. Rudy Wells rebuilds him with state-of-the-art bionic replacements. The radical group Fortress captures Rudy and Michael with plans to build their own bionic army to take over the United States. Now it's up to Jaime and Steve to stop them.

My Thoughts:
This is one that I actually burned myself off an old recording off the TV. So needless to say the quality from an old VHS Tape left a lot to be desired. But I must admit... considering the source material... it came out better then I thought it would. I have always been a fan of all the Bionic series. And this reunion movie is no different. I enjoyed watching it again after many years. I got a kick out of both Steve Austin and Jaime Somers feeling obsolete after seeing the new Bionic Man (Steve's son). Kept saying... "Hey... I can't do that!"

Extras:

My Thoughts:
I decided to watch this one next because I am a Nicole Kidman fan. I know this is a remake to an older movie... but I never seen either version before today. So I can't say how faithful to the original movie this one is. Though I hope that it isn't. I can't be sure of course... but while watching it... it felt more like they were making fun of the original movie more then anything else. I got to say... this one didn't impress me as much as I would have liked. I just found it to be a little too weird and silly. But it does make me wonder if I would like the original movie.

Yeah... I am trying to do two things at this point...

1. Save all horror for October. Like Jimmy said... only 2 days now
2. Finish this marathon within those two days... so watching shorter movies whenever possible. Been sticking with right around 90 minute movies when I can.

So will have to see from there.
