Title: Alphabet Marathon - Discussion Thread
Post by: Kathy on October 03, 2007, 11:53:27 PM
I'm not sure how to play. Are we to fill in the blanks with movies we've watched this month?
What are the rules? :readthis:

Yes, lets set a challenge, how many of us can fulfil each letter in the alphabet by viewing the appropriate titles in October? Anyone else up for it? I think Pete may succeed if he has a horror film that begins with an X and a Q?

Simple rules - The title's first letter counts
ie Escape from the planet of the apes would cross out the E
Condemned crosses out the C
etc

I will just update my initial post to keep track of how I am doing, perhaps we can all do the same

Apologies in advance boys, i hate losing so I'll get real competitive and nasty

Just one title for the numbers section is acceptable Touti

I've updated my scoresheet, and will hopefully add one more tonight after rugby  :tv:

I put one title in since I already watched it this month but I'll even push the challenge to watching them in alphabetical order.

No particular reason... I'm shy, and the foreign language doesn't make me more talkative...  :-\

Anyway, I'm here every day, lurking  :-[

It's good to see you still around Laura.

I like this thread. It makes me watch DVDs with some sort of aim. I wasn't sure when the heck I was going to get around to watching Apocalypto. Then this evening I thought, "Something beginning with... A!". So I watched it and it was excellent.

I thought there was only 26 letters + 1 number I this marathon, so 27 films to watch? Did I miss something?

Oh and, it's 3 down for me too! Just finished watching American Psycho.

My review?  ???

I'm totally confused.. I must've missed something somewhere, don't know..

So what are the rules on

- shorts: do they count at all, what is the minimum length for a film to be eligible ???
- TV Series: do episodes count, a disc, or season only

Not sure what Touti is doing either, but I'll stick with the 26 letter alphabet and one numbered item.

Surely if you watch several episodes of something that should be substantial enough for an entry?

Agree. Many movies are only 90 minutes or so. 4 episodes of a TV sit-com will equal that.

Good to know. I usually wear shorts when watching DVDs :D

:surrender: Didn't mean to be apply too much of a rules system. :tomato: But I also didn't want to be a wuss by watching a bunch of Loony Tunes cartoons and call it a day. :weep:

I'll be going for features of about an hour or more (so I can trow in an episode of masters of Horror, or two, and TV Series will count for a watched disc (usually worth 2-4 hours of watching).

I like this idea of "being forced" to watch DVDs. Thanks for this :)

One question though: Is there a rule for these marathons for which title counts? I.e original title or DVD title. Or can we use these as a joker?  ;D

I just love this marathon idea.  Without it I would have spent my sunday surfing the internet or work on stuff for my 4x4 club but instead I'm just getting ready to watch 5 movies in a row.

This marathon is a great idea.  :thundergod:

I agree. I also take it as in incentive to finally make my unwatched stack smaller or watch movies I haven't watched for awhile (if I have got no unwatched for that specific letter).

Zardoz
Zathura
Zodiac
Zoolander

Zorro
Zulu

Thanks for the recommendations!
The only one I have seen is Zoolander a few years back. I found it not that great. But maybe I will give it another chance.
Zardoz looks like it good be fun, but could also be really trashy.
Zathura looks like I could like it, but I think I saw the trailer for this one and it did not keep a good impression with me.
Zodiac has good reviews, but it looks not like my kind of movie.

Zorba the Greek seems not to be the original title, but Alexis Zorbas. Same goes for Amelié, which is also not the original title. That means, we are allowed to use localized titles?  ;D

It has to be Zulu, if you haven't seen it already. That's a proper film!

I have to call foul on Zorro. The major films were "Something of Zorro", meaning the title begins with whatever teh something was...

Edit: Meanwhile, I'm surprising myself. Seven for seven this month so far; managed to slot Coffy in this evening. Actually I can think of worse ways to spend an evening!

I'd say: just use the German Title...

Just finished watching Bloodrayne. Not at all what I expected. I expected this complete piece of unwatchable garbage. Well, I found it quite entertaining. Sure, everything about the movie is sub-par, but there's something in there that kept me interested.

Touti, is there any way you could manipulate the post db to place all the actual marathon posts of everybody at the beginning of the thread, and have the discussion afterward? It would be nice to have them all on one page, instead of having to scroll through the whole thread to find everybody's marathon post.

Some sort of alert on modified post might be interesting too, unless we all take the habit of posting when we update.

Not to put any pressure on but that's 13 down, although rugby on the weekend slowed up the viewing slightly.  :tease:

Z - Zulu is my 'must have' movie Tom for a Zed  8)

Second Ross's request - "Touti, is there any way you could manipulate the post db to place all the actual marathon posts of everybody at the beginning of the thread, and have the discussion afterward? It would be nice to have them all on one page, instead of having to scroll through the whole thread to find everybody's marathon post."

And a new challenge for November has been concocted, more details to follow at the end of this marathon

Which Wicker Man did you watch? The original with Christopher Lee or the remake with Nicholas Cage?

How dare you even ask!  :o

 ;)

It was the original version, and the Director's Cut. The DVD gives you a choice, but only the Theatrical has a 5.1 remix. Even in mono and with variable video quality I think the DC is worth seeing. I know the ending very well, but somehow, it makes the film all the more powerful.

I haven't seen the new version, but I just can't comprehend how they can possibly get the same effect.

I wondered because you only rated it 6/10, which to me indicates it's only slightly better than average.  :stars:

 :hysterical:

Have a closer look at those scores; they follow an odd pattern. I don't know what I'm going to watch on Wednesday, but I can absolutely guarantee it will be 10/10. And they'll only get better...  :tease:

I tried to reorder the posts to group the lists at the beginning, manged to do 1 but kinda screwed up and almost lost the thread.  The forum has not options to this, the only way is to modified the data directly and fool with messages ID's and posted dates, it really is a PITA.

To make things easy for everyone and save Richierick the extra work, I can just take them out of here and put them in a separate thread.

That'd work, and would save all the hard work I put in: pre-selecting the movies, coloring and IMDb links. ;)

Richierich, I hope you don't mind, I know it took you time to put the lists together, I appreciate the initiative.

I will go and watch another movie now :tv:

10/10 is Taiwan's National Day.

Found this:
Double Ten National Day; celebrated every year on October 10th to commemorate the 1911 Wuch'ang Uprising (http://www.gio.gov.tw/info/festival_c/double_e/wcrelo.htm), a milestone in China's political development and new chapter in the history of the Chinese people.

I changed one of the movies I was going to watch - instead of Night at the Museum I decided to watch Night of the Living Dead. Or should that be George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead?!?  :hmmmm:

If you haven't seen this movie before I would recommend your seeing it. It is in black & white but that never bothered me. I suppose it might be classified as a cult or B type of movie but I still liked it. Although some of the scenes are primitive I thought they were very effective; they grossed me out.

I really enjoyed this movie but there was one thing that really annoyed me. Why did the female lead act the way she did? She acted so stupid, tripping over herself and generally being useless. I started hoping the zombies would just put her out of my misery!
(click to show/hide)
I mean really, would you act that way if someone were trying to eat you?!? (and no  intended!).

Oh I'm so glad to hear you've taken on one of the true founding fathers of modern horror, Kathy! Have you used D yet? You'll be needing Dawn of the Dead...

I don't generally look for subtexts, but I think there was a good portion of racial subtext in the film, considering one of the heroes is black, and considering the abrupt end. All the traditional white characters are stupid, die or fall apart, including the girl who goes completely nuts and has a breakdown. A very brave film I think for its day and yet to matched in many ways. Even Dawn, Romero's masterpiece, doesn't have such clear characters like that.

Now I've just watched Duel for my D. I hadn't seen it with the DTS remix as I'd bought the DVD before my speakers. It is quite brilliant. Pete, I reinforce my comment the other day; Maximum Overdrive should be used as a drinks mat for refreshments while you watch a proper vehicle thriller!  :tease:

Interesting seeing the variety everyone is watching in the marathons, and the scores being given. Complete spectrum of genres and themes being viewed.
Perhaps we can compile a top 40 at the end of it?

Touti - Interested to hear how you rate the Jack the Ripper TV production, I have that version but never watched it yet

I can already tell you that it's gonna be a 10, I drink this stuff. I first saw it when I was 16, it was on TV on friday nights in 30 minutes epidodes, french dubbed version  :yucky:, but I missed the first 2.  About 15 years later it was on TV (History channel I think) and again I missed the beginning.

It took me 6 years to find it on DVD because it's not available in R1, I finally found it on ebay, advertised as "used" and bought it only to find out that it was a home made DVD from a ripped R2 release.  I contacted ebay and paypal who didn't a shit so I kept it.

This is one of the view movies I can rewatch and still get completely "sucked in".  I tell you, if you haven't got to the letter J yet, you should watch it.

It's because it was a product of the 60's and despite being advanced in terms of  it's handling of race, it seems it didn't pick the same path with the female sex. Dr Who is a very good example of this, watch stories from the 60's and the main female companions are pretty much there to scream and run away/faint/get caught and be rescued.

True, but continuing my earlier comment, do you think the stupidity, greed and bonkerishness (new word!) of the white characters is exaggerated to emphasise the level headed bravery and ingenuity of the lead black hero?  :headscratch: I feel a candidate for the discussion thread coming on!  :tease:

OldBoy (middle part of a vengeance 'trilogy', but this is perfect. And twisted like you wouldn't believe.)

Missed this earlier.

I have to confess it's been a while since I watched this one, so I'm struggling to recall what the characters were like. I seem to remember the husband was a somewhat selfish individual, but can't remember what the wife and child were like.  :hmmmm: I just remember Barbara's character as she was so wet, I also remember her brothers character and he does seem somewhat childish for his age, so I would say you are more than likely right.

Have to add this to my rewatch pile now.

Well I finished my mini marathon last night; Dawn of the Dead, Ichi the Killer, and Old Boy. Of the three I enjoyed Dawn of the Dead the most, then Old Boy, Ichi the Killer least of all.

The biggest disappointment for me was Ichi the Killer. The concept, empathy for Ichi, and the soundtrack were the only things going for it. The killing was unrealistic and didn't make me feel any discomfort at all. Whoever did the foley mixing was totally incompetent and totally took me out of the film. :yucky: I always watch a film in it's original language and when I'm done I watch it with any commentary afterwards. This is the first movie, ever, that I couldn't finish the director commentary; even that was bad. The worse part of all is that if I own a movie I will eventually have to watch it...and I own Ichi the prequel. Noooooooo.

Started 'The Invisible' last night, but fell asleep on couch  :-[

Then the last one, a re-watch of Series 4 of X-Files which will take a few days to go through.

How is everyone else doing on their marathon? Still 14 days to go :)

@richierich - I wasn't trying to be the first to complete, I expected others to finish before me. I prefer to enjoy the movie I'm watching rather than rushing through it just to complete it. The wife has been out of town a lot attending trade shows (should be winding down the middle of November and we'll get to spend more time together) and it has been slow at work for me. Things just worked out that I was able to keep up a steady pace of DVD watching.

Just finished watching Rocky Balboa. I was pleasantly surprised! Considering it's the sixth on the series, and the time between this and the previous ones, I didn't think Sly would be up to it. Well, not only is he up to it, it's actually a great movie!

That puts me at 15 watched, with 12 to go.

And I've decided to change my T movie, instead of TMNT, I'm going to watch Transformers!  ;D

I still have 7 to watch at this point.

Since there's still 13 days to go (although I won't watch anything today) I surprise my self that I seem to be able to finish this. Well, there's been a couple of days off from work this month, which helped tremendously. November will be more difficult; but I stayed away from Masters of Horror episodes this month keeping them for November, which might improve my chances then.

Hey, Kathy! Are you still doing this? Your list hasn't been updated in ages. C'mon slacker!  :tease:

Last night I watched Y for Yojimbo. Marvellous film, and the inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars. I also think it may have been an inspiration for the Hot Fuzz theme. Just a short section; as Angel returns to the village and it all kicks off, there's a brief passage of music that could easily have been written by someone who had just been watching Yojimbo. Anyone else seen both of these and can offer an opinion?  :headscratch:

I'm officially withdrawing from the competition.  I may have the time to watch one more but definitely 6 in less than 2 days.

I really enjoyed this marathon, it forced me to watch many movies I've had sitting in my collection for a long time and never watched.  I hope with can do this again but not with the alphabet please, 26 movies in a month is just too much.

Can someone explain what's the big fuss about "Taxi Driver"? I mean I liked the movie but there's nothing so extraordinary about it :headscratch:

Hey, Kathy! Are you still doing this? Your list hasn't been updated in ages. C'mon slacker!  :tease:

I knew this month was going to be tough; too much baseball, hockey, and football. :-[ I'll catch up some tonight. ;)

This is exactly how I feel. Great stuff.

But, may I just add a:  :o , a  ??? and even a  :voodoo: to the thread? "Nothing extraordinary about" Taxi Driver? No. Just, no. You are in fact, wrong.  :tease:

Apart from the performances, the direction, the dialogue, the cinematography (a rather different view of New York to most others at the time), the music, it's a complex and frightening moral story. We see Travis unravel, even as he exposes the grubby, nasty side of life. And in the end, you might be happy that a young victim of prostitution has been rescued, but it's by a man who is an emotionally damaged reject. The story seemed to be leading toward those dangerous emotions being exposed and dealt with, but in fact, he's now a hero and has been allowed to slip back into society. He is desperate need of being rescued from himself and it's doubtful it will happen. Just how many Travis's are there out and about?

I'm in the middle of my last one - X - X Files series 4, which has been good to watch so far. I will finish in time hopefully   :ok:

And the same as others, the marathon has been a good exercise as I have watched titles I normally pass over.

Will stick to my plan next month, I understand if others do not join me  ;D

Yeah, me too. Not that it "forced" me, I had more, shall we say "standard" offerings on some letters, but I took the opportunity to actually select stuff I normally pass.

That being said, I just finished watching my 20th movie for the month: The Fountain.

It's a great movie. I loved it. But I'm still not entirely sure what it's trying to do and what message it's trying to convey. Or maybe it's not even giving any message, and just interpreting something. I usually don't partake in movie discussions, as I feel I lack to the skill to actually express what I'm really trying to say when speaking of what I think of this or that movie, but if any of you have seen it, I'd be really really interested in knowing what you thought it was all about.

And if you haven't seen it.. Well, get it ;)

Now I know I risk being shot, excommunioned, thrown in the dungeon or forced to eat a Big Mac for what I'm about to say but hey, gotta do it sometimes.

While I was watching "Taxi Driver", it felt all along like watching a Woody Allen movie  :tomato:.  The reason I'm saying this is that I don't much like this style of movie when the characters talk fast and keep repeating the same sentences 6 or 7 times.  You know things like "Are you telling me what to do, are you fucking telling me what to do huh ?  Huh ? Are you fucking telling me what to do huh?  Don't you ever fucking tell me what to do, are you fucking telling me what to do ?"

I think you're getting my point, this kind of writing was overly used in those years and I find it annoying.  That's why I didn't much enjoy "Taxi Driver".

I said that I love the idea before... Funny thing is, that I was so worried in the beginnning I wouldn't be able to make it, that I watched so many that I am now "ahead of schedule" and even get to watch some more. So far at 22 in the marathon and 25 for October

Like Touti in October (who is doing great but obviously has other plans towards the end of the months) I will have trouble in November; 5 day vacation and less days off from work besides that. Still, I'll start it and see how far I can get.

Actually I understand that. I'm not keen on it to, but found the power of Taxi Driver's story took attention away from it. Raging Bull was similar. Scorcese uses it a lot though and it did put me off Mean Streets. Not only did they repeat, but they mumbled. They also do it a bit in Goodfella's; I love the film, but I do find it flimsier that most.

I'll share the :tomato: and say this: I find Scorcese a touch overrated. He is one of the best directors of all time, but it annoyed me when I often saw him cited as "Greatest American director". I tend to react to hype by finding things wrong! His dialogue and repetitive themes don't matter too much, until you're splitting hairs.

I watched J for Jaws tonight. I can't watch it too many times. Spielberg has the variety Scorcese misses. And I do like the way he sometimes uses old fashioned movie dialogue, with people talking over each other, or several conversations going off at once.

Have tagged it as N for next month's marathon, will let you how I enjoyed it then.

My tip for a good film is Perfume - very much better watching than expectations from reviews and overviews

Q and J may indeed pose more of a problem...?
Thought I prepare myself for November and found I indeed do not own any movies for either J or Q. Don't think I want to buy some obscure DVDs just to do the marathon though. What do you guys think how that should be handled?
Title: Re: Alphabet Marathon

Well I don't have a J either, so what I was thinking, is if you don't have a movie with last letter J, go 1-up and use the second to last letter (in my case, Jumanji or Cujo). It bends the rules a little, but at least I have the same number of movies to watch as everybody else.

I like the solution Ross, I think I have one title ending with J, but will check later  :-\

This marathon is great. Yesterday my faith in Scorcese was called into question. Tonight I restored it with R for Raging Bull! Cinema at its finest is an experience rather than just a film or just a story. And this film is certainly that; profound and brilliant. But if you don't like his style of dialogue, you might struggle because some of this is a mere murmur, but it's all part of the overall effect. The sound was originally mono, but the remixed DTS cleverly leaves it intact and adds atmosphere. Some of the fight scenes are astonishingly powerful for it.

I don't know if I'll finish this month; I've finished 12 :bag: Has anyone seen Scarface? I had heard it was fantastic but...I only rated it a 7/10. I haven't watched any of the extra features yet thought; I want to try and get more movies in instead.

I've been hooked on boxing since Cassius Clay (Mohammed Ali) won the gold medal in the Rome Olympics. Raging Bull is absolutely brilliant - powerful, realistic, and moving. The dialogue might be a bit difficult but that makes the film that more true to life. I really loved this movie! Hmmm, I wonder if I watched "R" for this month...if not, I know what I'm going to watch for my "L" in November!

Scarface is a 10/10 for me

Has always been one of my favourite films since I originally saw it. Maybe it's a boy thing, cos my lad (14) watched it for the first time this year and absolutely loved it as well.

I loved Scarface too, but I must admit to being slightly underwhelmed. That's likely because of its mythic status, which is tough to live up to. When I see it again I'm sure it will have a deeper effect.

You might have a point. I had heard sooo much that I expected a lot. I just hate that, with all that ammunition flying, it took forever to get Tony. I mean really...how can everybody be such a lousy shot?!?

Ah well, I did like that particularly famous scene for that reason. I saw it as kind of a metaphor for his character; so full of himself, he doesn't even know when to lie down and just die when he's already dead! His ego kept him standing.

:tomato: You can brand me a heathen, but I don't care for Scarface. I saw it in the theater when it was released, I watched it again about 5 years later on HBO and I watched it on video about 3 years after that. It doesn't do a thing for me. The language and violence don't bother me, I have movies with as much or more of both in them. I have watched all three of the Godfather movies and, while I enjoyed them, I do not have them in my collection. I guess the overt connection to the mob is the main reason. And before you go through my collection to refute me, yes I have movies with "mob" connections. Oceans 11 and 12 (my wife likes George Clooney), Oceans Eleven (the original), The Mechanic (I like Charles Bronson, but not everything he's done. I don't plan on getting 'The Velachi Papers'.), Charlie Varrick, a lot of Steven Seagals movie (we both like him) and many others will have a "mob" connection. I'm sure there are a lot more that I have but don't associate with the mob, it's not in your face. But, having lived in upstate New York (Utica/Rome area, one has to wonder why they have the lowest crime rate in the nation.) and San Francisco and seeing members up close and in action, they have never impressed me. While in New York, my wife wanted to open a business. "Rocky",  who ran a Baskin Robins in the mall where she was employeed, came up with a lot of offers from "associates" who would "lease" her the front of a building for free. We declined all of them, guess we will never know for sure. I guess that has carried over into my impression of mob films. :2cents:

Nooooo! Can't believe they did that!

So, I was getting ready to watch the next movie in line for this marathon, Jeux d'Enfants, or, as it is called on the DVD cover, Love me if you dare. Nothing special there, it's not unheard of for French movie from France to be released here under their english title, because the releasing company is American.

So anyway, I put the disc in, let the previews roll and half watch them while I'm on the net reading up a little about the movie, as I always do. Comes the menu, I hit start movie. Opening scene, long shot of construction work with decent sound effects (nothing spectacular though). And then the first spoken words.. WITH BURNT-IN ENGLISH SUBTITLES!! Now I don't mind subtitles, but, hum.. I speak French. The soundtrack is in French. Why the heck would I need subtitles? English ones at that!

So anyway, long story short, I'm changing my J movie (I just can't bear the subtitles, I'll hunt down a better copy of the movie, if possible). Still haven't decided which yet though. Seeing as I've watched Zathura in this marathon, I though why not watch Jumanji also? So Jumanji it is!

And I've already ordered a FRENCH copy of Jeux d'Enfants (along with a few other movies I shouldn't have ordered.. oh well!  ::))

I'm a frenchman from Quebec, who do you think?  ;)

One of the most decorated team in professional sports (although you wouldn't know, judging by the past 10 years) that is just about to celebrate its 100th year of existence, and was part of the original 6: The Habs.. Otherwise known as the Montreal Canadiens.

Go Habs go!
