As most here know I am way behind on watching the old black and white films. So I thought this month I should rectify that. At least for some comedy. So most these films I have never seen before. And some that I did... it has been so long since I seen them I remember nothing about them.

Found out I am getting some Ma and Pa Kettle films... so added them to the list.

Getting ready to go to work. So my horror movie marathon is officially over. If I have enough energy after work I may start this one when I get home (about 1am) though if I do will only be a short or two.

Percy Kilbride as Pa Kettle

Plot:
On their wedding night Bob informs his new bride Betty that he has bought a chicken farm. An abandoned chicken farm, to be exact, which is obvious when the two move in. Betty endures Bob's enthusiasm for the rural life, rustic inconveniences, and battling nature, but her patience is severely tested when glamorous neighbor Harriet Putnam seems to set her sights on Bob.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

This is a fun film. And a good introduction to the Ma & Pa Kettle characters. Though I do wish they had a little more screen time in it. But watching this film I can see how these characters got popular with their own films. The cast did a fine job. And I was happy to see Fred MacMurray in it as I have liked everything I seen him in so far. Definitely worth the time put in to watch it.

Fatty and Minnie He-Haw
Fatty is courted by an enormous Indian princess, who proposes marriage.

My Thoughts:
This is my first time seeing anything with Fatty Arbuckle. While not bad, I think I was expecting a little more from it. I think the scenes with him in the saloon in town were better then the scenes of him at the Indian camp.

The DVD I watched this on could have used a bit more cleaning up. But then again considering this film is more then 100 years old (1914) they probably did the best they could with it.

Although Ma (Marjorie Main) quickly adapts to her new home's push-button conveniences, Pa is flummoxed by the newfangled technology.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

Now this is more of what I was expecting going in. I like the fish out of water story line that is in this one. Though I must admit that it is pretty predictable. At least going by today's standards. There is several laugh out loud moments. And I liked how opened up for the next movie at the end of this one. Letting us know what the next film will be about. A well done fun comedy.

The Three Stooges: Men in Black
The stooges become doctors at a large hospital where they disrupt patients and staff alike.

My Thoughts:
A fun short. I liked the setting in the hospital with the stooges as doctors. I must say I do prefer these earlier shorts with Curly Howard instead of Shemp or Curly Joe.

The Three Stooges: Three Little Pigskins
The stooges are mistaken by a gangster for the "Three Horsemen of Boulder Dam", famous football players.

My Thoughts:
While I didn't like this one as much as the previous one. It still was worth the time to watch it. While I can't say I recognized her... according to the credits this one has Lucille Ball playing a gun moll.

My Thoughts:

Not to bad for their first feature length film. I even enjoyed Curly-Joe more then I thought I would. He really does remind me a lot of Curly. The film has a few chuckles in it and a decent story line. I would say an average film... maybe slightly above.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

My first viewing of W.C. Fields. I must admit I was expecting a little more from it. Especially since I heard this was one of his better ones. Yes, I did get a few chuckles here and there. And I can see how the character he created became as likable as he did. I don't know... maybe I went in with too high of expectations. I would say worth the time put in to watch it but nothing spectacular.

Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Zeppo do their best to defend Mrs. Teaside (Margaret Dumont) and Freedonia's honor. Contains the timeless and unforgettable mirror sequence, the hysterical peanut stand scene, and a climactic battle that is not to be missed.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

Now these guys are more like it. Their style and antics fits my tastes well. I like their rapid fire humor. I also like how they have a mixed of both slapstick and you have no idea what will come out of their mouths at any time. Well except Harpo... you have a pretty good idea what will come out of his mouth. Definitely a fun film I would recommend. I can't wait to see the rest in the collection.

The Three Stooges: Horses' Collars
The Stooges are detectives in the Old West. They have been sent out to recover an IOU from Double Deal Decker (Fred Kohler), a ruthless killer who plans to take possession of a ranch that is rightfully owned by Nell (Dorothy Kent).

My Thoughts:
This one is pretty good. I liked the setting for the story. And the gimmick with Curly and the mouse was fun.

Man vs. machine! And the winner is every comedy fan when Charlie Chaplin's Tramp confronts assembly line woes in this classic chosen in 1998 as one of the American Film Institute's Top-100 American Films.

The Little Tramp punches in and wigs out inside a factory where gizmos like an employee-feeding machine may someday make the lunch hour last just 15 minutes. Bounced into the ranks of the umemployed, he teams with a street waif (Paulette Goddard) to pursue bliss and a paycheck, finding misadventures as a roller-skating night watchman, a singing waiter whose hilarious song is gibberish, a jailbird and more. In the end, as Tramp and waif walk arm and arm into an insecure future, we know they've found neither bliss nor a paycheck but, more importantly, each other. The times and satire remain timeless in 'Modern Times'.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

I was really looking forward to checking out some Charlie Chaplin. And this one was very good. I liked the mixture of silent and non-silent filming. There was several spots I found myself literally laughing out loud. This is definitely one I would recommend.

The Three Stooges: Restless Knights
Set in Medieval times, the stooges learn they are of royal blood and vow to save the kingdom.

My Thoughts:
This one I found to be pretty average. The setting was only ok with this one... and found that the mixture of old English and modern to be a bit distracting.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

This one, while entertaining, didn't impress me as much as the previous two. I don't think I cared for splitting up the time. Having someone watch the kids while they were in New York. I personally think it would have been more fun to see the kids running around New York. Though what they did with the story line wasn't bad either. I just think it could have been better.

So he settles for the job of orderly at the Whitestone Sanitarium, a career move that's guaranteed to keep the patients – and viewers – in stitches! The fun begins with Sammy Davis, Jr.'s rendition of the film's title song and continues as the bumbling Jerome, a one-man disaster area, triggers chaos every time he tries to lend a helping hand. From causing the patients more trauma to a high-speed ambulance chase, Lewis and his healthy dose of comic mishaps are the perfect prescription for all that ails you.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

I used to like Jerry Lewis a lot when I was younger. While I still found this to be an enjoyable movie... I think my tastes has matured some. But going by this film at least, while I can still enjoy his films, they don't seem to hold up to my childhood memories.

Another very good film. It is hard to go wrong with Abbott and Costello. And I definitely like when they have to deal with the classic Universal monsters. It makes for fun films, at least going by the couple I seen so far.

The Three Stooges: Ants in the Pantry
You can't run an exterminator business if there are no pests, but Larry, Moe and Curly can fix that. They infest a nearby mansion and turn up just in time to take care of business, using whatever means necessary to rid the home of its unwanted guests.

My Thoughts:
This is another short that is just average through most of it and then ends with a good laugh. I liked the plot idea. I am really getting a kick out of watching these DVDs as I am seeing many I don't remember ever seeing before.

Actors Moe, Larry and Curly are given the roles of a lifetime when they are mistaken for studio execs on a Hollywood lot.

My Thoughts:

This, while it is a fun film, is far from their best work. The plot is good even if it is a little on the hectic side. And some of the skits seen in this one I have seen in other movies of theirs. And hey we have some nice looking "native" dancing girls! So over all I would say it is still worth the time put in to watch it. Just don't go in expecting too much.

The Three Stooges: Half Shot Shooters
The stooges are discharged from the army after WW I, and promptly administer some revenge to their mean sergeant. Years later they wind up in the army again, and of course the same sergeant is their superior.

My Thoughts:
This one I enjoyed quite a bit. The story, while predictable was fun.  I seen some of the gimmicks here in earlier shorts but still enjoyed them.

The stooges are small time actors traveling by train to an engagement. Along with their pet monkey, they manage to spoil the trip for quite a few of the other passengers including the conductor and a big movie star.

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby once again hit the Road to comedy, and this time they're really in hot water—guests of honor at a cannibal feast in the darkest heart of Africa.

Hope and Crosby play Fearless and Chuck, American side-show performers stranded in the jungle. After their human cannonball act starts a fire that burns down the circus, they become entangled with a larcenous pair of entertainers from Brooklyn (Dorothy Lamour and Una Merkel) anxious to separate them from their bankroll. Duped into accompanying the ladies on a safari, Chuck and Fearless soon find themselves in the clutches of savage tribesmen who pit Fearless against a gorilla in a wild wrestling match!

A blend of jokes, zany adventure and songs, Road to Zanzibar became one of the big box office hits of 1941.

I have now watched three of the "Road To" movies (This one, Singapore & Bali). While not my favorite so far this one was definitely fun. I enjoyed the story and the locale was great as well. Plot:
Alice's fantastic adventures lead her straight to some of the most memorable characters ever imagined, including the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in the original Alice in Wonderland. Based on Lewis Carroll's beloved story, this live-action fantasy features Hollywood icons Cary Grant, Gary Cooper and W.C. Fields along with Charlotte Henry as Alice. Filled with spectacular sets and imaginative costumes, the classic Alice in Wonderland is a timeless adventure for the whole family!

Extras:

My Thoughts:

First thing I will say about this one is I do not see myself watching it again. That being said it is a good curiosity piece. And some interesting casting. In this one we have W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty... Gary Cooper as The White Night..... and Cary Grant as Mock Turtle. For the time (1933) this film did have some decent special effects. Though a lot of the costuming should have been better. It is a very sporadic.... out there kind of film. But while I never read it... I hear the book is as well. The scary thing is that my roommate told me this is the film that is the most faithful to the book that she has seen. All that being said, I would go as far as recommending this one for a curiosity piece.

This one I enjoyed quite a bit. Not surprising with such stars as Bob Hope and Lucille Ball. But it was the little girl that I felt stole the show. A cute little girl and I loved her attitude. This is actually the first film I have seen Lucille Ball in. I just know her from "I Love Lucy"... and while I figured it was the case I was happy to verify with this film that Lucille Ball really could sing. This film may not have a lot of laugh out loud moments... but if you are looking for a fun film to relax and watch I would definitely recommend "Sorrowful Jones."

After spending years on stage in burlesque and on radio perfecting classic routines such as "Who's on First?", the duo transitioned to motion pictures at Universal in 1940. In their first leading roles, Bud and Lou play con artists who accidently enlist in the U.S. Army to avoid going to jail. Making matters worse, their no–nonsense drill sergeant turns out to be the cop who tried to arrest them! Featuring classic routines such as "Drill", "Dice Game" and "You're Forty, She's Ten", the film also starred the popular singing group The Andrews Sisters performing the Academy Award®–nominated° song "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy". Following the success of Buck Privates, Bud and Lou made an astounding 26 more movies at Universal leaving a legacy of laughter that will be treasured forever.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

This is a fun Abbott and Costello flick. Seeing the misfits in the armed forces is always fun. While this one is definitely worth the time put in to watch it... if there is anything for me to complain about... it would have to be a little too much Andrew Sisters. I think I would have liked to have seen a non-musical version of this film. But to be honest... even that didn't really take away from my enjoyment. Nothing against the Andrew Sisters mind you. Just think they popped up a little more then I was expecting.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

Another good addition to my collection. I got a lot of laughs out of this one. One of my favorite scenes must be Groucho as a doctor giving Harpo a medical exam. I have found I really like The Marx Brothers. For me they are right up there with Abbott and Costello as favorite classic comedy teams.

Simple-minded Harold foils a robbery with the help of his new-found friend, a vicious dog.

My Thoughts:
I realize this film is 100 years old (made in 1917)... and I imagine they did what they could  but this one was hard to watch what with all the film scratches and even the audio was filled with static. The story itself wasn't bad. It started off a little slow but was worth the watch.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

Lucille Ball joins the guys in this one. While it is not my favorite Marx Brothers film so far I did enjoy it quite a bit. This shows one heck of a difference between back in the '30s and now. I don't believe there is any way a hotel would let you get behind on the bill now a day... let alone be forced to keep you there if you are sick. Not that I get to stay in a hotel frequently enough to know. Either way... a fun film... worth the time put in to watch it.

My Thoughts:

A fun film... but I somehow remember it being better. Jerry Lewis used to be a favorite of mine but I guess my taste in comedy must have matured since then. Or maybe I haven't found the right film... though I do think this is one of his bigger hits.

The Three Stooges: Grips, Grunts and Groans
When the Stooges get a prizefighter drunk, Curly has no choice but to step in and take his place inside the ring.

My Thoughts:
This was a really fun short The Stooges are slapstick at it's best.  Sure they did the basic same thing with boxing (this time with wrestling) but I found I really didn't mind. After a few of the Stooges full length movies it is good to see some early stuff with Curly.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I do think it is the first time I ever seen the Stooges have wives. This one not only had the slapstick they are famous for... but lots of chase scenes that I enjoyed as well.

The Three Stooges: Three Dumb Clucks
Their father's plan to marry prompts the Stooges to break out of jail to save him from himself...and, it turns out, from his intended's dangerous posse.

My Thoughts:

A fun film. Lots of funny situations in this one. Caught in the Draft has 2 of the 3 stars of the "Road to" films. Only Bing Crosby missing. Bob Hope's character here is a lot of fun to watch. The things you will get yourself into for a girl you like!

My Thoughts:

This is a bit different of a Bob Hope film then I have seen before. While there is a little comedy here... this is much more a suspense/thriller. And a really good one at that. Bob Hope was better then I was expecting acting in a more serious roll. I am also getting to like the actress Paulette Goddard. I am going to have to look into more of her films.
