Title: What movie should we discuss?
Post by: snowcat on February 01, 2010, 10:30:51 PM
Discussion topics for each film are as follows. You all have 9 votes each (this means you can vote for more then one film you would like to take part in a discussion of.)

Cloverfield - (did it change the face of movie monster films?)
Scary Movie - (its influence on the parody genre)
Jersey Girl - (Why do so many Kevin Smith fans hate this movie?)
Supersize Me - (Did this really change the way documentaries were made?)
Fargo - (does lying about how a true a story is effect the audience?)
Serenity - (did it start a sci-fi revolution for which it has never been credited?)
American Pie - (Changing the face of teen comedies)
Spinal tap - (the way a mockumentry should be made)
Saw (can horror movies go to far graphically?)

This poll will run until Saturday

I have to laugh that we can only choose 9 options...but I wanted to choose a 10th one!  Oh wait, there's only 9 choices/  Never mind.

I actually don't own any of these movies...though one of them I gave my brother so I could always borrow it back...

It's looking like Serenity will be coming up soon (if not 1st). Think I might try to squeeze in Firefly before Serenity.

Today is the last day of voting I guess :p

Tomorrow the film will be revealed.

Does everybody think two weeks is long enough to review and discuss the movie? (recycled reviews welcome  :P)
Title: Re: What movie should we discuss?
Post by: Achim on February 05, 2010, 09:30:52 AM
While two weeks sounds good in general, I would not think we should have a time limit. What you normally do is set a time limit until the film shall be watched. Then again, maybe that's what you meant. In that case 2 weeks sounds good, considering some people plan to purchase the film first...

I will have to watch the film just before the discussion starts, otherwise my bad memory will limit my klnowledge about the film... :-[

My new blu copy of Fargo arrived yesterday and I'm about a third of the way through Firefly with Serenity sitting by the TV next to Cloverfield. Ready to go with either of them whenever you are.

Ive been out and bought a new copy of Serenity... I must have lent it to someone and forgot about it  :-[

Okay, you got me. I have now ordered Firefly and Serenity. I will have to watch Firefly first though. I hope I will manage in time. Also it looks like that Firefly is not in stock, so it will take longer until I will get it.

As Serenity is the sequel to the Firefly series, I will definately watch Firefly first.

True, but the film was cheaper and If I don't like it I doubt ill like the series.

True, but the film was cheaper and If I don't like it I doubt ill like the series.

Why not see if you can rent it, borrow it, or steal it?  :P

One of the points against Serenity is that despite doing very well to stand-alone, the drive of the plot is dependant on the series. It quite cleverly summarises the main points, then ties off some others, before setting off on its own. Honestly, Emma, I don't think you'll fully appreciate the film -even if you like it- without the series and if you watch Firefly after there will be no surprises.
Title: Re: What movie should we discuss?
Post by: snowcat on February 05, 2010, 09:10:46 PM
Well... I doubt ill have time to watch both the series and the film... so I doubt ill bother to watch Firefly... its not particularly a series i'm interested in :p nor is the film and i'm watching it purposely for this discussion... The good thing is... if everyone else is going to have points from the view of seeing the series too it will be good to get a view from an outsider to the story.
Title: Re: What movie should we discuss?

Well, I'm pleased to hear that, Emma, because that will be a very neutral viewpoint at least.

My only worry now is you're a girl and girls are predisposed to dislike Star Wars, Star Trek, cars, porn and Babylon 5. Now there isn't any porn in Firefly, I was just making a point :tease:, but I hope you're not a "girly girl" who doesn't like "space stuff"...

The thing is Matthias, you aren't an average viewer. A typical audience member can be quite ignorant and simply refuse to see the difference. If it's set in the future and has spaceships flying around, then decisions have already been made for a lot of people. I mean, Battlestar Galactica has been likened to dramas such as Sopranos, but I bet very few Sopranos fans who traditionally don't like sci-fi would have given it a chance purely on that basis.

And how many people have preconceptions about Buffy? If I say I like it, some people just sneer and say, "oh yeah, because of the fit blonde. Hur-hur. Vampires are silly." ;)

By the way, I'm sure Emma knows I was only teasing and not implying at any moment that she was ignorant of the potential genius within Firefly... :D
