Title: Rerun Marathons
Post by: Tom on October 07, 2007, 11:04:44 PM
This is not a start of a marathon, but a proposal of a specific kind of marathons. I got this idea from an old German Buffy newsgroup.

Someone opens a marathon thread picking a series, which has a high probability that it would have rerun character for most of us.
Then all who are interested to participate make a post saying so.
Then on a weekly schedule, episodes are watched (this gives the chance to participate in other marathons). The thread starter announces on Monday the next episode to be watched, and everyone who joined in has until Sunday to watch that episode and then post his/her mark for that episode with optionally a short review/thought.
The thread starter takes the average of the marks and updates the first post with the episode title + average mark + vote count.

To have a common ground, I propose the scale 0-10.

What do you guys think?

If I have got that show on DVD or on HDD, count me in.

Nice idea.  I'm in too......if I have the show or can get it for a reasonable price of course.

Yeah, I like this idea, though my collection of TV may not be quite so universal. Buffy would be a good start! :D

Yeah, that's a great idea. Would give me an incentive to revisit TV shows I've not watched in years.

I had thought of Buffy myself. But I think for a start-up I will start with a marathon of a short series like Fawlty Towers. Also it is possible to have more rerun marathons simultaniously. This way, there is something for everybody. But we have to keep attention, that there aren't too many at once which could be interesting.

I'd say, I will start one as a start to see how it goes. Then others can also start marathons.

hmmm, and Fawlty Towers is on my wishlist... the BBC can be a bit overpriced though.

I compiled a selection of series with under 20 episodes. Please provide each of you, which of these you are willing/capable to watch.
I must probably count the votes in about 4-5 hours to start the marathon. Otherwise I probably will only be able to start it in 28 hours. Or should I wait these 28 hours?

Here the list:
Fawlty Towers (12 episodes)
Freaks and Geeks (18 episodes)
God, the Devil and Bob (13 episodes)
Greg the Bunny (13 episodes)
Grosse Pointe (17 episodes)
The Job (19 episodes)
My So-Called Life (19 episodes)
Police Squad (6 episodes)
Spaced (14 episodes)
That's My Bush (8 episodes)
The Thin Blue Line (14 episodes)
The Tick: Live Action (9 episodes)
Undeclared (17 episodes)
Wonderfalls (13 episodes)

Well I have Police Squad and Spaced. To be honest, I don't think there is much mileage in the former, but oh my, there's loads in Spaced! It's a movie geeks dream sitcom. Those of you who do NOT have it, you HAVE to get it. This marathon HAS to be on SPACED!  :voodoo:  :thundergod:

Sorry for partly Skipifying this post...  :bag:

C'mon people. Three disc definitive boxset, from the people who went on to make Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. You know it makes sense!

Bugger. Looks like it's region 2 only...  :'(

I'm surprised. It would travel really well. Not to say it could be promoted on the back of the two films.

I created a little Access database for me to keep track of the rerun marathons and ratings to generate statistics and reports. Should I include the reviews/thoughts in the database also? Or is that going to far?

I will get whatever movie is decided on if it's readily available. I won't be able to post any more tonight; I'm heading out to the Buffalo Bills game. It's televised on ESPN if any one's interested. Keep an eye out for a group of rowdy fans in red wigs and face makeup in the end zone opposite the score board and you'll get to see me! Go Bills! :yahoo:

I will let this voting run for another day. Tomorrow (Oct 9th) about GMT 9 pm I will then start the first rerun marathon.

Currently in the lead:
Wonderfalls 3 votes
Police Squad 3 votes
Spaced 1 vote
Freaks and Geeks 1 vote

Being British, Fawlty Towers is never far away, but I do want the set. I just want it at a fair price! I might get the region 1 actually as I've seen it on Ebay for a bit cheaper.

Got these from the proposed list....

Fawlty Towers (12 episodes)
Police Squad (6 episodes)
Spaced (14 episodes)
The Thin Blue Line (14 episodes)

And happy to re-watch Spaced, it's a good 'global' series for both sides of the Atlantic

I own these:
Fawlty Towers -> seen, not too long ago, could be rewatched though
Freaks and Geeks -> half way through, currently on hold (so it lasts longer...); it's gold
Greg the Bunny -> seen, not too long ago, not ready to rewatch
Police Squad (6 episodes) watched like, a month ago
Spaced -> I'd be o.k. to rewatch this already, it's gold
(Undeclared -> Wish List; so maybe later...)

The one thing I am kinda hesitant about is, I am in enough trouble trying to get the alphabet marathon done and don't really want to throw in a second one already...
EDIT:
scrapped the last comment... re-read the first post and realized this thing does not invlove high amount of viewing...

My So-Called Life (19 episodes)
Wonderfalls (13 episodes)
I only have these two from the list, and I recently rewatched both. :(

Freaks and Geeks (18 episodes)
Maybe I should finally buy this one. It's on and off my wishlist for a few years.

Short series that are on my personal rerun list:
The Singing Detective
Ultraviolet
Profit

Here the final vote count:

Fawlty Towers (12 episodes) XX
Freaks and Geeks (18 episodes) XX
God, the Devil and Bob (13 episodes)
Greg the Bunny (13 episodes)
Grosse Pointe (17 episodes)
The Job (19 episodes)
My So-Called Life (19 episodes)
Police Squad (6 episodes) XXXXX
Spaced (14 episodes) XXX
That's My Bush (8 episodes)
The Thin Blue Line (14 episodes) X
The Tick: Live Action (9 episodes)
Undeclared (17 episodes)
Wonderfalls (13 episodes) XXX

Okay, let's kick it of with Police Squad.
Spaced, Wonderfalls and Freaks & Geeks are also series I am dying for a chance to rewatch. So we can start any of them in the near future also.
We have to see, that we get a selection of series running in parallel, so that as many interested DVD junkies as possible have something to watch. But we also have to keep attention, that it is not getting too much at once  :stars:
Of course anybody is invited to start and maintain a rerun marathon thread of a series he/she wants to rewatch.

But I suggest to keep it at a weekly interval for episodes of each series. This way it will not affect our other viewing pleasures that much.

It's a great series (of course that's an subjective observation). Good acting, funny & dramatic storylines. ...and even though I went to school in Germany I still find a lot of things in there that remind me of my past. And yes, I was a geek

The "funny" part is actually the reason why I still haven't bought it. I've seen a few episodes of Undeclared and some of Apatow's movies - let's just say, it is not my kind of funny.

Let's collect a list of series which would be good rerun material. Please nominate possible series. Then, let's say in a week or so, each of us will vote on the series, we are willing to join in on.

Nobody has any suggestions? :(

Here my suggestions:
Spaced
Wonderfalls
Buffy
Blackadder
Friends
The Office (BBC)
Red Dwarf

For the following I probably would be the only one having it:
Due South
Highlander

Can I vote/propose a Series I've never seen ?  Would that still be a rerun ?  I'm thinking of "24", I've never seen any episode and I'm told it's very good.

Of course. It is also allowed to join in on a series, even if it is your first time watching it.
For "24" somebody else would have to start a marathon thread though. I do not own it and I am not planning on buying it.

Honestly? This rerun marathon format will not work. I certainly wouldn't be able to watch 1 episode a week only. With 24, I always end up binge watching it in 2-3 days. It's just that good! :)

I just realized 24 is up to season 5 or 6 if not more.  I can't do 1 a week and end up taking 4 years to watch the whole thing.  I'll get all seasons and watch the whole thing at once during the Christmas holiday, I'll turn it into the "Ultimate One Week Complete 24 Marathon".

Of crouse I also need 40 hours to watch "La Vie La Vie" which is becoming a Christmas Holiday tradition for me now.

From Tom's list I only own Spaced.

Unwatched and waiting are "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.", "Buck Rogers" and "The Avengers (Emma Peel)".

Wouldn't the trouble with 24 also be, that you can't really pick random episodes...?

I thought with this marathon we'd settle on a series/season, and then watch each episode, in order, 1 a week (or 2, or 3, or 4, however many the thread starter decides)?

You are right, with 24 there wouldn't simply be another choice than going by order and through the entire season.

I always pictured though that for series where the episodes are self-contained, we could jump all over the place and just cherry pick episodes, especially if it's a rerun for the participants.

Theoretically possible. It's the descision of the thread starter. Personally I will go in the correct episode order. And there aren't many *good* series which have really complete self-contained episodes (not counting comedies like Monty Python).
