Title: Lesbian Movie Marathon
Post by: Tom on March 13, 2009, 10:12:24 PM
Lesbian Movie Marathon

I had planned to do a lesbian themed weekend marathon at some point. But currently I seldomly have a complete weekend where I can concentrate on only watching movies. So I will extend this marathon to a few weeks.
In this time, I try to concentrate on movies which fit this marathon (besides James Bond and Hitchcock), rather than watching random movies (but I won't rule out to watch other movies sometimes).

In this marathon I will watch movies, which have lesbian main characters, or have important lesbian supporting characters. No porns though. Sorry guys ;)

Title: But I'm a Cheerleader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/But_I%27m_a_Cheerleader) (http://www.invelos.com/images/DVDLogo.png)
Year: 1999
Director: Jamie Babbit
Rating: 15
Length: 89 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85
Audio: English: Dolby Digital Stereo
Subtitles:

Stars:
Natasha Lyonne
Clea DuVall
RuPaul Charles
Melanie Lynskey
Michelle Williams

Plot:
Megan thinks she's cheering for the same side, but her parents thinks she bats for the other side!

Megan has got it all - she is popular, pretty a model student and is dating the captain of the football team.

However, the cheerleading teenager is accused of being gay by her religious, over-zealous parents. They pack her off to a sexual reorientation camp not realising that it is "camp" in more ways that one!

What Megan's parents hoped would set her on the straight and narrow is a revelation to her, and a breeding ground for her burgeoning sexuality!

My Thoughts:
I have always enjoyed this movie. It is really campy, but in a fun way. The camp is used to satirize the ignorant people who think one has a choice to be gay or not.
One of the workers at the sexual reorientiation camp is played by RuPaul in probably in one of few appearances out of drag.

Try some of the ones I've reviewed, none of those films are 10 minutes material. But Dirty Girls could fit in this category since it's a loop carrier.

Title: Re: Lesbian Movie Marathon
Post by: Jimmy on March 14, 2009, 07:19:08 PM
No

A loop was the only way to watch xxx stuff at the beginning. There was short film usually filmed without sound with music and title card added after the fact. They were played usually in the basement of the adult bookstore and the costumer watched it in an individual stall. For watching the film the viewer had to deposit a quarter and the film was a single reel that play in a continuous way (the reason for the name). They had usually a running time between 10 and 15 minutes. A good exemple of what is a loop is the Swedish Erotica serie they aren't original beginning of the seventies one, but they follow the same structure and, to be honest, most of the first original loops are destroyed since they had played too much.

The expression "loops Carrier" that I used sometimes refers to a movie made of short segment with a short story used between each part. Dirty Girls or Wild Things are exemples of what I means by this expression. The rule is that all the segment of a "loops carrier" must be film expressly for one movie in the same period and directed by the same director. one last thing, a "loops carrier" isn't the same thing than a compilation video (the No man's Land serie is an exemple of this) that is only a patchwork of different movies scenes place together in a new release.

Sorry for the wandering in the off topic territory Tom

Subtitles:

Stars:
Stockard Channing

Plot:
Jane's Mom (Stockard Channing, TV's "West Wing," Grease) assumes her popular daughter is just like every other fifteen-year-old girl - a little confused about growing up, but a great kid at heart. Jane figures her mom is just like any other mom - a little too protective, but only because she loves her. Both of them believe they have a good relationship. Then Jane meets Taylor, the new girl at school, and falls madly in love with her.

Suddenly, everyone is trying to figure out how to cope with the realization that Jane is a lesbian. Her classmates are having trouble treating her like a human being, and her mom refuses to have anything to do with Jane's experiment. The trouble is, this is not just a phase. Jane knows she's gay. If her mom can't or won't accept that fact, their relationship could be broken forever.

Through the help of new friends and a lot of soul searching, Jane learns to accept herself and her sexuality. Now the challenge is finding a way to help her mom remember how much she loves her daughter.

My Thoughts:
I first saw this TV movie before "Dead Like Me" first aired, so this was the first time that I saw Ellen Muth in anything. I enjoyed this movie. From the ones I have watched until now in this marathon, this one feels to be the most realistic.
Ellen Muth is great here. They used the same storytelling device as in Dead Like Me here. Ellen Muth serves as narrator similar as in Dead Like Me. With often the same kind of dry humor. I wonder, if this movie had anything to do with her being cast in Dead Like Me.
I think Stockard Channing did a good job as the mother, who in general is very liberal and open-minded (even having a gay man (RuPaul) in her close circle of friends) until it is her daughter who is gay.

My Thoughts:
An entertaining movie. We have the lesbian daughter, who begins a new relationship at the same time her widowed mother moves in with her, after she is kicked out of the grandparents house, because she got pregnant out of wedlock at the age of 48. Boy looks she great for a 48 year old woman! She is the left one on the cover in the wedding dress. She was 43 years old in real life at the time of filming.

I just noticed, that the main character (the one on the right), is played by Michelle Krusiec who played the older Molly in the DS9 episode "Time's Orphan".

One of the main characters in Wonderfalls is a lesbian (and may have been, according to the commentary, one of the reasons Fox cancelled this series.

The sister was a lesbian and had a bigger part in the first episode and a bigger storyline in another episode (I think it was the fourth and last episode aired, but is the second on the DVD set which restores the production order). As it was the last episode aired, which had a central plot point about the lesbian sister, it could well be that this was a big reason for FOX to pull the plug. Shame on them.

I don't have any lesbian movies I'm aware of.  So this thread is quite interesting!

But I'm am currently watching season 1 of The L Word.  And enjoying it far more than I thought I would.  It doesn't hurt that there are naked girls every 5-10 minutes  :hysterical:, but even without that, I'm finding it to be very good.

I had watched the first season of "L Word" but then I stopped. I don't like series, where there are trying to establish couples, and then after they got together, they tear them apart again. It's too much like a soap opera.
As far as I know an example for it (I will put it in spoilers, because it will spoil later seasons):

(click to show/hide)

Another reason I stopped watching is, that there were too many characters I didn't like to watch. From the first season I liked Dana, Shane, Alice and Lara. And always when other characters' storylines went on, I got bored.

A fun caper movies with some beautiful women. Especially Gina Gershon is very hot in this movie.

Also great performance by Joe Pantoliano as Caesar!

My Thoughts:
From the director "But I'm a Cheerleader". While that one has its charm, as its premise cannot be taken seriously, and therefore is a fun comedy to watch, this movie on the other hand takes itself too seriously.
During most of the movie, many of the main characters are unlikeable and their actions are pure vandalism.
The movie picks up a little towards the end, when tension in the group breaks them up for awhile and also the finale is a little fun.

Wild Things

Mullholland Dr. and Chasing Amy are already on my list.
Wild Things I do not have. Is it really a lesbian movie? I have never seen it, but I always had the impression, that besides the famous kissing scene in the pool, this movie has nothing to do with lesbians.

Wild Things is a actually a decent little thriller. Predictable, exploitive, trashy, but never takes itself seriously. The story at one point does hang on a bit of lesbianism beyond the snog, but I don't think it's enough to get into a marathon like this because it isn't a theme of the film.

By the way, Tom, I was disappointed you stuck with a traditional rating method. When Pete does a themed marathon, he picks appropriate icons. Might I suggest you at least update yours with nom-nom's out of 5?

So a bad lesbian film would be: "nom-nom" and a good lesbian would be -I mean a good lesbian "film" would be: "nom-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom"...

You already have the correct icon too:  :P

My Thoughts:
A great movie! It was at least the fifth time I have watched it (I didn't keep track of my watched dates until a few years ago).
The movie (or rather its title), caused a minor controversy in the other forum recently. Just to be clear: Åmål is a small town in Sweden and not a person. Knowing this it's quite clear what the title wants to convey.

Elin is sick of small town life. To get some excitement, she acts on a dare to kiss Agnes, an outsider rumored to be a lesbian. She feels bad after it and goes to Agnes to apologize and gets to know her better. She finds out, that she really likes her but gets scared what that could mean.

The cover says "the answer to American Pie", but this movie doesn't have anything common with American Pie. It's a quite realistic portrayal of teenage life and problems.

As soon as there is a new DVD/Blu-ray release, I will double-dip instantly. The picture quality is not that good. It's non-anamorphic and grainy. I can handle the grain though. Somehow it adds charm to this movie.

My Thoughts:
This movie is about three teenage girls, who make a pact to do really stupid dares. The most sane one of the three is a closeted lesbian, who comes to grip with her sexuality during the course of the movie. Her storyline is the most interesting one, but sadly it has very little screen time. Almost not qualifying for this marathon.
There is a guy in this movie, who already has over 6000 DVDs at the age of 15 :o
When one of the girls went to him (because of a dare) pretending to want to borrow a movie from him, he says why she didn't go to Blockbuster then. Involuntarily I had to think of Skip after that line.

Here the part of the lesbian's first dare which essentially is almost her entire storyline, except a little scene later on with her second dare. The interesting thing here is, that she was the first one to actually fulfill her dare, but said otherwise, because she didn't want to admit to her friends and herself, that she did enjoy this kiss.

My Thoughts:
Three stories in three different time periods.
All three have a great cast and were well acted. The last two stories also see some hot action. In the first one by Michelle Williams and Chloë Sevigny. In the second one by Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres.
I liked the second story with the best. I think it would have had potential for a film of its own.

This mini series is based on another novel by the same author, whom provided the source for "Fingersmith", the other mini series I reviewed recently. And I liked this adaption just as much, if not more, as "Fingersmith".
I am surprised, with what you can get away with in a BBC series. If it had been an American series, it would have to be at least HBO (or something similar), to be able to show this. Of course here in Germany it wouldn't have any trouble to be on normal prime time ;)

It's the norm in the UK. By and large, the population seems to appreciate a powerful, well-made documentary and doesn't get too worried about hard hitting subjects. The Daily Mail normally objects, but that's about it! Another one that may interest you from some years ago was Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.

My Thoughts:
I really want to like this movie. But for my taste the drug usage in this film is played up to high. I liked the scenes with Syd at her office and the scenes with Syd and Lucy alone. But every scene with Lucy's possé is just plain boring.
Also this movie is one of the examples why lesbian movies are said to always end in tragedy. And I don't like the way it happened. Lucy is never shown in the movie to be rock bottom with the drugs. Only her old girlfriend Greta is. But in the end she suddenly dies (offscreen) from the drugs.
But I liked Radha Mitchell's natural beauty in this movie.

Rating:

Sorry to hear that you didn't like it. I would give it a , if not a .

For once, I don't find Lucy's circle boring. Or at least watching them isn't. It's a very convincing and richly nuanced portrayal of such a group. Their drug use doesn't make them freaks, they are habitual users, in repetitive patterns of behavior, slightly out-of-phase with reality.

And Lucy's end makes perfect sense to me. There is a seductive quality not only to Greta (once again an amazing Patricia Clarkson), but also to the life she represents. Yes, on one hand Lucy is tired of it, but on the other hand, leaving it requires an effort that is just too challenging. Their is a key comment earlier in the movie, as she talks at Syd's magazine about her past career: "I made it impossible for myself to continue."

Radha Mitchell's appearance as Syd is deceptive. A natural beauty, sure, also an unassuming demeanor and a curiosity that comes off as innocent. It isn't a calculated facade, but it effectively hides a very strong ambition.

And a quick note on Ally Sheedy. She is absolutely captivating as Lucy, one of her best performances for sure. But I also prefer the Anne Hathaway of Rachel Getting Married over her earlier roles, so your mileage may vary.

A desire for independence and personal expression clashes with tradition in director Deepa Mehta's love story with a twist exploring family values, love and loyality in India.

When Sita (Nandita Das) arrives at the New Delhi home of Jatin (Jaaved Jaaferi), her husband in an arranged marriage, she soon discovers that untold secrets and lies are simmering beneath the happy surface.

But what is the real reason behind the strange tension between Jatin's brother Ashok (Kulbushan Kharbanda) and his duty-bound wife Radha (Shabana Azmi)?

What part does their elderly paralysed mother Biji (Kushal Rekhi) play in the unfolding drama?

And why is Sita so keen to rebel against the notion of unquestioning devotion to one's husband?

A catalysmic event is about to turn everyone's world upside down as the harsh realities of contemporary Indian society are put under the spotlight.

My Thoughts:
For Indian cinema, it was a big controversy, when it was released in 1996.
I feel that the relationship between these two women came too sudden. It seemed the only reason they got together because their husband were neglecting them. And I think it is not a good choice to have a pairing, which would even seem wrong in western cinema. The main characters are sister-in-laws. In my opinion this weakens the message which the movie wants to get across: The liberation of women from the strict traditions in India.

The male star of this movie (Matthew Goode) always reminds me of Callum Blue for some reason. I just noticed that he was Adrian Veidt in Watchmen. I have never noticed that before. Anthony Head (Giles on Buffy) does a great performance as a miserable married man.
The story moves along nicely. It is slowly becoming one of my favorite romantic comedies.

My Thoughts:
This movie is okay. Not really my kind of movie. The performances were good. Also the story has some merrit, but in general it is just another one of those lesbian movies which just have to have a tragic/sad ending, like "Lost and Delirious", "Heavenly Creatures" and countless others. Sadly it is hard to find lesbian movies which are upbeat and have a happy ending.

This is easily one of the top movies of this decade and one I love very much. To dismiss it as just another sad lesbian movie is, well, kinda sad. Exceptional cinematography. Outstanding performances, not only by the two leads, but also by Paddy Considine.

It also is a great character-driven story, which is far less about lesbians than you suggested. I don't even agree on the ending being sad. Yes, there is a cruel twist, but the movie ends on a slightly upbeat note, as much as that is possible after the reveal. And it is one of those twist movies that do well on subsequent viewings, that aren't diminished, but enriched by knowing what's to come.

The cinematography was not something which I found particularly interesting in this movie.
Also I didn't like the editing very much. For me many scenes had a disjointed feeling.

Well, for one thing, I found it to be stunningly beautiful. Really gorgeous, in fact. But I also loved the handheld camera with all those tiny, tiny pushes and pulls - curious and restrained at the same time.

I enjoyed this movie. Even though it has a slow pacing, it was not boring for a minute. The actresses all did a good job. Especially the one playing the lead role of Marie. Though the ending again is like so many other independent lesbian movies. But this time I didn't mind it so much.

Plot:
Sugar Rush Series 1 explores the world of Kim and her earth-shattering lust for the gorgeous and sassy Maria Sweet, otherwise known as Sugar. Series 2 brings with it the arrival of Saint, sex-shop manager, part-time DJ and all-round goddess.

And if Sugar and Saint aren't enough to blow Kim's mind, there's also her dysfunctional, embarrassing family - a mini-freak for a brother, an obsessively house-proud dad and a mum who's behaving as if she's the one who's a teenager.

Each episode takes us on a different journey inside Kim's world as her wry observations take us into the mind of a screwed up, loved up, lustful adolescent experiencing the bright lights of Brighton and the rush of teenage love. Sit back and watch the riotous exploration of what it means to be young, horny and queer in 21st century Britain unfold.

My Thoughts:
A fun little series. I enjoyed every episode. From the narrative style it borrows from My So-Called Life, only with a teenage lesbian in the center.
Her family is really crazy. Especially her brother is worth a laugh everytime he is on-screen. This aspect reminds me of "Mein Leben und ich", a German series inspired by "My So-Called Life". This reminds me, that I have to continue buying that series on DVD. Too bad that it is relatively expensive (>20€ for a 13-episode season).

I watched this series a couple of years back Tom and really enjoyed it. I must say though the way season 2 ended annoyed me quite a bit. My favourite character was Saint and at the end when Sain, Kim and Sugar all had to live in the one house would have been hilarious. Yet we never get to see it becuase the show ended way too soon.

Yeah I know what you mean. It was almost as if they penned that scene with a third season in mind and it could haveworked and even been quite funny. As far as a way to end a show though well, for that matter it did not work at all. Have you watched the show South of Nowhere?

I have heard of it, but the last time I checked there was no DVD release.
I see, that now there is one at amazon.com, but "This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media." :(
And rather expensive. More than $30 for a 10-12 episode season. The third season is even $50.

Ah it's probably not worth it. I watched it online a few years back (don't hurt me). It was a cute enough little show but it was almost like a toned down version of Sugar Rush. And Sugar Rush itself is like a toned down version of The L Word haha.
Title: Re: Lesbian Movie Marathon
Post by: Tom on May 15, 2010, 11:01:52 AM
I have only seen the first season of The L Word. It was one of the last series I watched via "grey channels" before I went DVD only (because luckily almost all series I was interested in started coming out on DVD).
There are two reasons why I stopped watching L Word:
1) I only liked about three of the main characters and every time one of the others got screen-time, I got desinterested.
2) I didn't like where the series was going: Getting a couple together, breaking them up, get another pairing together, breaking them up,...
This makes it hard for me to get invested into the characters. This is also a reason why I am glad to a degree, that Sugar Rush ended after two series. It would have gone the same way.

Did I miss out on something? Should I have continued watching it?
Title: Re: Lesbian Movie Marathon
Post by: Critter on May 15, 2010, 11:07:51 AM
Not really, I watched 5 out of 6 seasons of The L Word but it never really did much for me. Since you only watched the first season then you missed out on my favourite character 'Helena'. Her story arcs were very interesting and probably one of the reasons I watched it for so long. Most of the time though it's pretty much what you have said, couples getting together then breaking up. It did have some good stories in it though, I just felt none of them lastest long enough, they seemed to just like cutting the good plots off, just when you were starting to enjoy them.

As if Eve's love-life couldn't get any worse, Linda, a larger than life, blonde bombshell from the city sweeps into town, swooping up all the fellas in her path. As the local guys go crazy for Linda, Eve's plans to bag her football hero go seriously awry.

I have reviewed Kashimashi (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,626.msg82909.html#msg82909) in the past. I plan to rewatch it someday and include it in this marathon. I was considering buying Strawberry Panic, but for some reason never came around to it. If you have other good recommendations, I am all ears (it has to be available on DVD though).
Title: Re: Lesbian Movie Marathon

Strawberry Panic is awful! In my opinion anyway. It was just an excuse for having yuri, there was hardly any storyline and the episodes just bored me, I couldn't even get through it. There actually isn't that many Yuri anime, not that I have seen anyway. Kannazuki no Miko is a short series, only about 6 episodes I think. It's okay, I didn't really take to it that much but surprisingly it's a favourite amoungst yuri fans all over, I dunno maybe I missed something. My favourite yuri stories are always in shows where they are secondary elements, or even just subtext. Noir, El Cazador de la Bruja, Madlax and Mai-Hime are all fantastic series for yrui subext or secondary yuri characters. Mai-Hime especially has my favourite yuri couple, but they don't really come in until later on in the series. Also Revolutionary Girl Utena is always worth a watch, it's a bit different but is a fantastic example of a yuri show that doesn't suck for a change. Oh also I just remembered Kiddy Grade! I really recommend this one, it's mainly subtext yuri, which is only maintext a couple of times but it's just a fantastic show altogether, one of my faves!
Title: Re: Lesbian Movie Marathon
Post by: Tom on May 26, 2010, 11:51:10 PM
I have seen Noir. I enjoyed it for the yuri content, but otherwise it was a little too slow for me. In my opinion they could have made the pacing faster and brought the series down to 13 instead of 24 episodes.
I think a friend of mine mentioned Kiddy Grade in the past, but don't remember if he enjoyed it or not.

I will keep a look out for some of the ones you mentioned.

Haha I haven't seen this film but I have seen the trailer for it and don't really want to. It's what happens when a group of lesbians who aren't even actors get together with a tiny budget, and think they can make a film. Jill Bennet and Cathy DeBuono have quite following online for their weblogs etc that are watched by hundreds of people every week. They are both psychiatrists mainly but like to have a jab at acting as well. Really I think they should stick to the therapy.

This is getting trailered pretty heavily, so it's due this week I think. I'd tell you what it is like, but I doubt I'll be watching it! Never been one for costume dramas, but to be fair, the clips make it seem more modern in dialogue than I'd usually expect. Apparently it is a true story, so maybe that has something to do with it, that it was written by a real person, if you know what I mean.

Yeah I read that it was based off Anne Listers real diaries. Apparently they are over 4 million words long or something so it took them years to work through it, but some of the dialogue in the film is taken straight from the diaries apparently.

My Thoughts:
As family get-together drama goes, it is a good movie. These type of movies just don't seem to be my taste. I bought this one years ago for my lesbian movie collection. I had started to watch this one then, but didn't get through it. Now I finally got around to watch it completely, after I learned that it was directed by Gurinder Chadha, who also did Bend It Like Beckham and Bride & Prejudice.
This movie is about four families and their separate Thanksgiving family gatherings. These four family stories intertwine which works surprisingly good.

A nice romance which is fun to watch. It's a French movie shot in Mandarin. Originally I thought this would be set in the past (19th century or so). I was pleasantly surprised that it is set in the relative present (I read that it is supposed to be set in the 80s or 90s). I enjoyed it, but the ending is stupid, though not unexpected.

Hey Tom, have you heard about the new film The Kids Are All Right (http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=136968) with Julianne Moore and Annette Bening? That link is to the Empire review, but I also saw a clip tonight on Film 2010 and it looks really good. Apparently the cast are superb. Moore and Bening play lesbian partners who have two teenage kids, conceived via sperm donor. The girl is now 18 and she finds out who her biological father is (Mark Ruffalo), looks him up and brings him into the family. His mere presence causes upheaval. It's pitched as a comedy drama and seems really solid.

Is it being judged on what has been heard about the plot or what has actually been seen? It all depends on the context of the story and they were saying how brilliant the characters are so it could turn out to be very intelligent and the exact opposite of what's expected.

I haven't seen it myself. I'm just going by what I read on the website http://www.afterellen.com/ On that site some bloggers liked the film, but many others hated it. So it really is drawn down the middle within the actual lesbian community. Personally I want to see it just because Mia Wasikowska is in it and I quite like her so I will reserve my judgement.

My Thoughts:
An okay movie. Nothing special. This movie may have been controversial for its time, but for today's standards it is really harmless.
It stars Romy Schneider, who the year before finished the famous Sissi trilogy. I can imagine that she took this role to try to cast away her image for the Sissi type of roles which she did before. But I still see her here as the same type of character.
This movie is a remake of a 30s movie. I have also ordered that one. I am curious how it is compared to this one.

Solid film with great acting - that about covers it. It's the most mainstream of Cholodenko's films, despite the gay marriage thing. It took me a while to warm up to the comedy aspects, which, while not laugh-out-loud funny, come dangerously close to sitcom territory.

Certainly interesting, although I found it a bit distracting that it actually goes through all those worn-out thriller mechanics. And I'm not sure if I'm just too clever ( :P), but what later comes as a surprise was pretty much clear to me from the first restroom scene. I was however surprised to see in the closing credits that this is actually a remake of a French movie.

Also (as I don't get tired to say), the best thing Piper Perabo has ever done. And on a side note, there is a difference between tragic and depressing. IMHO, Lost and Delirious is the former, but certainly not the latter.

The pair hatch a plan to rob Lala's family to fund their dream of living together in Paraguay, but while Lala waits to be reunited with her lover, she is detained in a prison in the outskirts of Buenos Aires for a crime she committed long ago. Desperate to be with her girlfriend, Lala devises a dangerous rescue plan to get her back.

Boasting beautiful cinematography and electrifying performances from its two female leads, celebrated Argentine director Lucía Puenzo (XXY) returns with a gripping tale of forbidden lesbian romance and a crime heist gone awry.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
An okay movie. A little clichéd. The young lesbian couple is involved in a crime and one of them is now trying to get to the other who is in prison.
The two leads are natural beauties.
This is my first Argentinian movie.

After a brush with the local police, she finds an unlikely sparring partner in Saffron, a tearaway teen who has been recruited to prepare for boot camp. Just as the pair begin to bond, the true reasons for Alexandra's return begin to unravel, threatening the future for both of them.

The award-winning A Marine Story highlights the absurdity of the US military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy through the personal story of one courageous woman.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
The story about a woman who gets discharged from the Marines because she is gay and how she is dealing with the aftermath. She also befriends a troubled teen who they want to sent off to boot camp and she is preparing her for it.
A nice enough movie which kept me interesting throughout the runtime.

When Amina helps Miriam's sister-in-law to hide from the police, a chain of events is set in motion that changes both women forever.

From overcoming oppression to finding personal freedom, from the hardship of a loveless marriage to the hesistant joy of an unexpected love affair, The World Unseen transports the viewer to a vibrant, colourful world that is universal in its themes.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
This movie deals mainly with racial prejudices. But it also has a nicely developed lesbian relationship (at least in the end it ends at the start of one). These two women have great chemistry together. These two actresses already did a lesbian themed movie together ("I Can't Think Straight", which I have reviewed before), but this one is a lot better.

Hey Tom, and anyone else interested in... erm... Lesbians... well, Lesbian themed films I should say!  Did you know it was the 26th BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival at the end of March? The BFI have a sub-site set-up for it here: http://www.bfi.org.uk/llgff/

As a BFI member they sent me the programme as well and while it's not a genre that particularly interests me, Cloudburst caught my eye which will be the opening film. Here's the synopsis from the BFI:

Quote
Stella and Dotty have been together 31 years. Now in their seventies it is apparent, at least to her granddaughter Molly, that legally blind Dotty needs more specialist care than her ‘friend’ Stella can provide. With devious manipulation to get past the cantankerous Stella, Dotty is taken from their home and placed in an old people’s nursing facility. But it doesn’t take Stella long to break her woman out of there and go on the run. Stella knows that Molly will try to separate them again if she catches up so there’s only one thing for it, Stella and Dotty are going to have to get married in Canada to ensure they cannot be separated again. And so begins a road movie quite unlike any you’ve seen before as the two septuagenarian lovers leave their hometown in Maine and head to Nova Scotia, picking up an unlikely ally along the way, Prentice, a dancer from New York trying to get home to his sick mother. Through various hilarious scrapes and moments of peril for the elderly dykes-on-the-run, this oddball trio come to realise how important it is to have someone to love you in this life, and how lucky Stella and Dotty are that they have each other. Dukakis excels as butch Stella, with a mouth so profane she should come with a censor warning, whilst Fricker’s guileless Dotty provides the perfect counterpoint to Stella’s gruffness. The two Oscar-winning actresses share such warmth on screen you really do believe the two of them have been together for over 30 years. Fitzgerald’s film is wickedly funny and beautiful to watch. Ultimately an exploration of life and death and most importantly the love one can find along the way, we are proud to be opening the 26th LLGFF with Cloudburst.

Sounds like a lot of fun. They have a clip on the page I linked to earlier.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
A lesbian-themed short movie collection. I bought it mainly because of the short movie D.E.B.S.. This is the short movie on which one of my all-time favorite lesbian movie "D.E.B.S." is based on. It is a fun little movie. Only one of the actresses reprised her role in the big picture adaption: Jill Ritchie playing Janet. And she also did a great job here. Lucy is played in the short by Clare Kramer, which some of you may know as Glory from the fifth season of Buffy. Also she had a part in Bring It On.
The other movies in this collection ranged from interesting to boring. I especially liked PROM-troversy and "Little Black Boot", which is a nice take on the Cinderella story.
Also worth of note is "Memoirs of an Evil Stepmother" which is an interesting take on the Snow White story with a fun twist.
