Title: Weekend Movie Marathon: Unwatched DVDs
Post by: addicted2dvd on November 12, 2009, 01:40:14 PM
Weekend Movie Marathon
Unwatched DVDs
This weekend I decided to try to get some of my Unwatched DVDs watched. Between all the movies I bought in October... all the DVDs given to me lately... and getting all of my mothers DVDs I now have over 200 movies on DVD I have yet to watch. And I really need to work on getting that number down. Now... I may have seen a few of these movies before... but not since I got them on DVD. Unfortunately I do have some real life stuff to do this weekend... but I am still hoping to get through a good handful of movies. If I get enough time to myself to do so. What is Clint Eastwood: Out of the Shadows?  Is it a documentary on his career?

Of course, I'd like to see your reviews of any DVDs I've given you like Forty Guns (will you like it more than I did?) or White Zombie...

Yup... it came with that Dirty Harry set I got.

OK... will see what I can do. There is still several you sent over that I haven't watched yet. Especially now that I got all those John Wayne war movies you sent to mom.

If you wanted to list the John Wayne war movies, I could rank them for you or at least tell you which ones I especially like.  Flying Tigers may be my favorite war film of his.  Sands of Iwo Jima got him his first Oscar nomination. I'm not expecting you to watch a lot of the ones in any one marathon that I sent but one would be nice.

I would like to see a review of "The Substitute", as you probably bought it after my recommendation. I hope it does not disappoint you. The cover is misleading in my opinion.

Yeah Tom... that is one of the ones I am hoping to get to this weekend. Probably early on in the weekend even.  :P Between your review and the trailer I been looking forward to it.

As I said, my favorite of those is Flying Tigers...In Harm's Way, The Longest Day, and Sands of Iwo Jima are also considered excellent films, though The Longest Day isn't really a John Wayne film...he's one of many in an all-star cast.  The Green Berets might be considered the worst of the lot.

OK... what are you people doing to me!?!

I decided to start my weekend with the movie The Substitute. Watching it while doing other things... so my attention is not 100% on it... but I am watching it enough to stay with the story with no problem.

Now... the problem is that this is a Danish language movie. But it is dubbed in English... which I normally prefer since I can't read fast enough to enjoy it with the subtitles. But damn if you people don't have me seeing these dubs as just not right. Even though I know I can't give it the attention needed to watch it in it's original language with subtitles... I am sitting here wishing I was watching it that way!

I tell you... you people around here is such a bad influence!  :tease:

My Thoughts:
I blind bought this DVD last month after watching the trailer and reading a positive review or two. I have mixed feelings after watching this one. It isn't exactly what I expected. but it is an enjoyable movie. Though I have seen better. This movie is originally in the Danish language. So I ended up watching the dubbed version. Which I normally preferred. But after watching some foreign movies without  dubs I discovered today I prefer the original language track with the subtitles now. So that kinda took away from my enjoyment a little as well. While I didn't enjoy this one as much as I hoped I would... it was worth the time I put into it.

My Thoughts:
This is one I have heard a lot about over the years... but never got to see myself. It is one that our good friend Roger sent me while going through his DVDs. Being a Disney movie I went into this one hoping to enjoy it... but at the same time thinking with the subject matter it had to be dated (after all... this movie is almost 30yrs old now) and was think time probably wasn't good to this movie. And I was right about that... but it really didn't matter. While not what I would call great... this is a good, entertaining movie. I had fun watching it.

I even linked to an excerpt of the movie in my first review (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,3299.msg78996.html#msg78996).
And I listed the movie with its original title in my second review (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,626.msg83109.html#msg83109).

Sure it had badly aged, but like you said it's a fun movie and it was awesome when it was released in 82. The 2 arcade games who were release also at the same time were also fun, I've played a lot with the one were you play a flying disc battle with another player ;D

Do you know that a 20th anniversary 2 disc edition was released with a lot of awesome extra about the film? It's one of the first dvd I've bought ;D

My Thoughts:
Well... what can I say... I felt like a vampire movie. So I thought I would see if I could find another good on in the Mortuary of Madness boxset. Unfortunately I wasn't too impressed with Abe's Tomb. While the video quality wasn't bad... the audio had a constant hissing. The writing, while had potential, really needs some help. The acting is only fair at best.  Even with that said... it is a vampire movie... and for that reason alone I did get some enjoyment from it.

My Thoughts:
I thought that next I would try another vampire movie from the same set. And hope that I am happier with it then I was the last one. And from the first scene I knew I would be. The story, while it still has it's problems is better. The acting was a bit better as well. And thankfully there was no hissing in the sound this time. Though the picture was overly dark in most the scenes. which was a bit on the distracting side. And it did seem a bit weird that the movie went back and forth between color and B&W (mostly in the beginning of the movie). But over all... a decent story that was enjoyable.

My Thoughts:
What with our friend Roger saying this is one of his favorite John Wayne war movies... I just had to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised during the opening scene in the plane fighting... for such an old war movie there was a nice amount of blood. This movie is 67 years old. So I shouldn't be surprised that some of the scenes has some film damage but over all the picture looks good... better then I would normally expect from such an old movie. The movie itself was very good. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I would definitely recommend it.

Title: Duel: Collector's Edition
Year: 1971
Director: Steven Spielberg
Rating: PG
Length: 89 Min.
Video: Full Frame 1.33:1
Audio: English: DTS 5.1, English: Dolby Digital 5.1, English: Dolby Digital Mono
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Stars:
Dennis Weaver
Jacqueline Scott
Eddie Firestone
Lou Frizzell
Gene Dynarski

Plot:
Before spinning cinematic gold from sharks, dinosaurs and homesick aliens, a young Steven Spielberg directed this high-velocity thriller about an innocent motorist terrorized by an evil truck. Spielberg's first full-length movie, Duel helped jumpstart the director's big-screen career, with a gripping, action-packed story hailed by critics as a film that "...belongs on the classics shelf reserved for top suspensers"(Daily Variety). Dennis Weaver stars as the traveling salesman waging a desperate battle for survival after he is mysteriously singled out for destruction. Praised for its deft use of relentlessly mounting psychological tension, Duel features one of the most uniquely terrifying "characters" in movie history: a massive, roaring 40-ton truck with more sheer menace than most flesh-and-blood villains. But Steven Spielberg was, literally, just getting started. A few years later, the action of Spielberg's blockbuster hit Jaws would echo Duel's tale of a lone hero in a heart-stopping fight to the finish against a monstrous, inhuman foe.

My Thoughts:
This is another one I bought blind this past month that I never got the chance to watch. It was recommended to me by more then one person. I enjoyed the movie... it is filled with tension. Don't really know what to say with this one since it is basically one long car chase so I will be keeping this one short. I do have to admit the ending was pretty much predictable. But I would recommend checking this one out.

Have you ever watched a musical or do you just avoid them at all costs?

Pete cannot stand music of any kind. Musicals are therefore completely off-limits for him. It has become some kind of running gag on this forum now

 Not missing out at all. I have seen some musicals. Not that long ago I suffered through High School Musical when my daughter really wanted me to watch it with her. And there was one or 2 in the past that I suffered through for my wife before she passed away.

I strongly urge you to watch Romance & Cigarettes.
I'd go as far as saying if you do not like that 'musical', I'd give you your money back

You don't get it, Critter! Pete doesn't like music. :P Even background music annoys him!

Now I love music, but I cannot stomach musicals. The only musical I really enjoyed was the episode of Buffy! And that's because they recognised how daft they are (though I realise Whedon proved you can know this and still devote your life to them). I just can't get by the idea of singing instead of acting!

My Thoughts:
This is another one I bought last month but never got around to watching. Not really too much to say about this one... while it was ok... I wasn't overly impressed. It really isn't anything more then an average horror. Just basically another take on the backwoods horror. And there is definitely better then this for that sub-genre.

My Thoughts:
This is one of the movies in the Mortuary of Madness boxset that I been wanting to check out since I first saw the above cover art for it. Of course I know you can't go just by the cover art on these movies... so I went into it with pretty low expectations. And it is a good thing that I went into it not expecting much. While the acting needs much improvement... I have seen worse. The script could use some polishing as well. But as I said about the acting... I have seen worse. The audio and video quality was right good on this release. As for the story... I didn't care much for the idea of the vampire not being effected by the sun.  But I have noticed that all vampire movies takes liberties with the vampire legend... especially these very low budget movies.

I loved that episode of Buffy too and I do love a lot of musicals. Even I however can't stomach the tripe such as High School Musical. I think my love of musicals comes from the old Disney films such as The Lion King etc. I consider most of those films musicals and I loved them all as a child. Now however it's films such as Across the Universe, Chicago and Moulin Rouge! that are my favourite musicals.

Little round disc, looks very similar to a DVD in fact but it comes in a sqaure case. But get this, instead of putting moving pictures on the disc, they only put sound! How insane is that  :P

What about Dr. Horrible? And you obviously like The Wicker Man, so not all is lost. And I second Rich's recommendation of Romance & Cigarettes.

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten Dr. Horrible! But The Wicker Man isn't a musical. Actors performing to diegetic music is fine and positively encouraged. It's when they suddenly burst into song outside of the stories logic and other cast members stupidly dance with them in complicated choreography, or worse, stand around gurning. I just don't like it. I looked up a clip of Romance and Cigarettes and really enjoyed the wit. Winslet is incredible! And then, she sang. For no reason. And paraded around outside with other random characters. It seems at odds with the rest of the clip. I will try it one day though; I'm not actually anti-musical! I just tend not to enjoy them.

I loved that episode of Buffy too and I do love a lot of musicals.
I like some musical also and even more when my favorite genre is combined with them. My favorite being Alice in Wonderland (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,695.msg70132.html#msg70132) released in 1976 ;D
