According to the comments on that article, it seems to be hoax.

I also have never seen it. I don't like to start series, where I know I will never be able to see all episodes.

I haven't seen much of the old Doctors either but you can always start with the "new" series from 2005 which is now in its seventh season. That is what I did and have enjoyed it very much, especially the David Tennant years. There is really no requirement to have seen any of the old series beforehand.

Thank you Patrik - I really should check this series out since I've heard so much about it.

But be warned, you need to like weird and absurd science-fiction to enjoy it. Rule of thumb you didn't like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book (let's just ignore the movie with Zooey Deschannel) or found Farscape too weird, you're probably not going to like Doctor Who.

Some old episodes have been found in Nigeria, reported on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24467337).

As mentioned earlier in this thread, that appears to be a hoax.  Not true.

The earlier mention in this thread was for Ethiopia not Nigeria and I doubt that the BBC would have reported this in the way that they have if this find was another hoax.  There seems a good deal of veracity in the report. I probably should have started a fresh thread instead of adding to this one to ensure that the details were kept separate.

I am thinking about starting with this series. Which sets do you recommend to buy?  I prefer it to be relatively low on cost, but I don't want any gaps (i.e. missing specials). I don't care about other bonus features though. It doesn't have to be an all-in-one set. It can be multiple releases if it is cheaper.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Series-Collection-DVD/dp/B002KSA41U/?tag=dvdcolonl-21

Seasons 1-4 of the new series, containing season 1 with Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor (whom you may know as the invisible man from Heroes) and all seasons with David Tennant's 10th Doctor (except for the 2009 specials*)

*In 2009 - the year after season 4 ended - there wasn't a regular season but instead 5 specials which ended Tennant's run by regenerating into Matt Smith's 11th doctor.

Also (if you do that kind of stuff) the torrent site eztv.it has a BBC3 special from a few days ago which is a history of 50 years of Doctor Who: The doctors, the monsters, the companions. I really enjoyed it.

PS: of course the BB3 documentary is extremely spoiler-y, revealing the regenerations and reasons why companions leave.

I also bought a few select classic Doctor Who stories that make sense (for me) in the context of the 2005 show:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Beginning-Unearthly-Destruction/dp/B000C6EMTC/?tag=dvdcolonl-21

The Beginning Box: The first three stories of the very first Doctor.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-The-Time-Warrior/dp/B000R20ZA6/?tag=dvdcolonl-21

The Time Warrior: First appearance of Sarah Jane Smith during the run of the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee), also introduction of the Sontarans (aka potato heads ;))

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Robot-Tom-Baker/dp/B000NVI2C4/?tag=dvdcolonl-21

Robot: Not a very good story, but the first story with the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Genesis-Daleks-DVD/dp/B000EGCD5A/?tag=dvdcolonl-21

Genesis of the Daleks: 4th Doctor / Sarah Jane story and the first appearance of Davros at the very beginning of the Daleks

This I don't have but this is the 1st doctor story that introduces the Cybermen: The Tenth Planet: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-The-Tenth-Planet/dp/B00EF1I85Y/?tag=dvdcolonl-21

One other reason why I always hesitated to start with this series was the many spinoffs. I usually am a completist. How much interconnected are these series with Doctor Who?

Not much. Imagine TNG and DS9. A visit here and there but that's it.

For example: In Britain Doctor Who is considered a family show suitable for children (for proof just look at this Doctor Who at the Proms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTA7EpXGWPY#t=6m30s) video*) which is the reason the Doctor was never allowed to visit Torchwood which is considered far more adult. But he did visit Elisabeth Sladen's (aka Sarah Jane Smith) pure children's show The Sarah Jane Adventures.

But in essence, each show stands on its own.

They are all independent of each other.  If you decide to start watching I would suggest starting with the ninth Doctor Who (a reboot of the series) portrayed by Christopher Eccleston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Eccleston) in 2005 I believe.  The first episode Rose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_%28Doctor_Who%29) is a great way to start.  Although Eccleston was great for the reboot, David Tennant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tennant) is still my favorite of the reboot.  You could start back with the earlier doctors but you might find this more palatable <G>

I actually prefer the old Doctor Who to the reboot. Although I haven't seen the oldest doctors (Hartnell and Troughton). There's a bit too much CGI in the reboot for my taste. I rather prefer the old, practical effects, even if they are very primitive by today's standards. They have a charm that is lacking today.

BBC America has done a series of specials this year on each of the Doctors.  The first half hour or so is about the doctor..how he is different from the last one and things like that.  Then there is a episode of show with that Doctor.  I have most of them on my DVR...only watched the first 3 so far.  I think they are reairing most of them this week leading up to the 50th episode.  I've enjoyed the older episodes for the first 3 Doctors that I've seen.
I did see some episodes with the fourth Doctor years ago.

I'm lucky enough to have all of the episodes you can get on disc (from england) and then some that you cant.  I do like the originals with some doctors being better than others.  But leaving the cgi out I find the newer ones more compelling in story etc.  And though some of the doctors and their companions had *chemistry* what was created between Rose and the good doctor (Tennant) was palpable with nothing overt going on.  But to be fair .. with the eleventh doctor, Rory, Amy and the doctor made an interesting triad.  Would be great even without the minimal cgi

Yeah .. they say you never forget your first Doctor :)  For me it was Tom Baker.  I don't think we even got anything from the bbc before then.  And not really sure when it was.

Tom Baker was the first I saw too.  Years ago, I saw some Doctor Who on PBS.  It was Tom Baker as the Doctor..Sarah Jane..and K9 for most of what I saw.  I ended up seeing when he regenerated into 5.  I don't think I saw as much with him..then I lost track of when it was airing.  Didn't see it again until just about 3 years ago when I finally tracked down the newer episodes on BBC America.

Just got a chance to watch An Adventure in Space and Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Adventure_in_Space_and_Time).  This is a docudrama of the creation of Doctor Who and the first Doctor William Hartnell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hartnell).  This really put a bunch of bits together for me as I had just watched the first two series and had read about all i could find on it.  If you get a chance and want to know some beginning bits this is a great watch.

Well off to the Tenth Doctor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_serials#Tenth_Doctor), portrayed by David Tennant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tennant) and The Christmas Invasion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Christmas_Invasion)

That is on my DVR...so one more thing for me to catch up on.     I still have to watch the Revisted specials starting with the fourth Doctor.  Maybe I'll watch that one later tonight...or tomorrow after I get home.  I have to go in to work for a bit.  Oh wait.  Duh.  Almost forgot that the 50th anniversary episode is tomorrow.  DVR is already set to go.  I probably won't be home in time to watch it live.  But I will watch it.

Is it just me or does David Tennant sound like Chris Barrie? Most times he reminds me of Mr Brittas. Sometimes he reminds me of Ace Rimmer.

Did anyone see the new episode on Saturday (well at least here in the states)?.  It was basically great.  There was a little bit in the story lines beginning that I didn't like/think needed ... but with 95% greatness who is to complain.  Great story with very good production and acting.  John Hurt, as almost always, was awesome.  Closed up a bunch of problem story lines/continuity/questions and really left wanting for Christmas Day.

They aired the 50th Anniversary Special in (3D) theatres all over Germany and they were sold out everywhere. I don't think they were expecting this given the fact that Doctor Who is not exactly a big name on German TV.

I watched it yesterday evening after I came home from the hospital. It was great.

DJ it would have been nice.  Even better to have him in some of the 'talks'.  I think I read somewhere that leaving Doctor Who was really his idea.  Though other places seems to have been.  Who knows <G>

I believe it was shown in some movie theaters here in 3D on Saturday too.  It was in more theaters tonight.  A friend actually got tickets for us to go, but I had to work.  It would have been in Columbus..about an hour and a half away.  If I hadn't had to work, I would have gone I think.  It would have been so cool to see Doctor Who on the big screen.  And I think a few things would have been cool in 3D.  I have an Epinions friend that was going with his son..I'll have to ask him about it.

I watched it Saturday after I got home - it is still on my DVR..and it is staying there.  It was awesome.
I agree with what you have in the spoilers.

Ohhh...did you see the prequel webepisode that came out like a week ago?  The Night of the Doctor I think it was called.  It isn't very long, but it ties into what was going on in the 50th.

I have recently watched the finale of the fourth series, which was a crossover with Torchwood and I am guessing the Sarah Jane Adventures. I was aware that Sarah Jane Adventures was more or less targeted at kids, but I didn't think it was as cheesy and as kiddy as the scenes in Doctor Who would suggest. Is the impression that these scenes left me with a good indication of how the series is? Or can the series be enjoyed by adults? The five seasons are fairly cheap to get, but if it is a chore to get through, I'd rather think twice about getting it.

If it helps .. i enjoy them and have them.  It is as you say for kids but i think the cross-over ep you mention was a little odd.  Her sidekicks are 'youse' as they say in new york but it is well done.

Basically you get a kid's versions of the Doctor Who monsters, for example the Slitheen (the fart monsters from London) return, this time it's a child.

It's the first episode after the pilot which (like most pilots) doesn't completely reflect the show.

Most episodes are two-parters, so they don't overburden their young viewers. Imagine the 60's Batman show which would always break when Batman and Robin are tied to some horrible death trap.

If you want to take a look, they are available on Youtube:

See you next week ... Same Bat time, Same Bat channel

From the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=same%20bat-time%2C%20same%20bat-channel) ...
 1. same bat-time, same bat-channel
at the end of the 1960s live-action (adam-west) batman tv show, an announcer would tease the forthcoming episode (that resolved any cliffhangars) with the comment: TUNE IN NEXT WEEK. SAME BAT-TIME, SAME BAT-CHANNEL. nowadays it is used to affectionately tell someone that you will see them soon, particularly at a regular-time/place.
cant wait to see you for sci-fi-friday. same bat-time, same bat-channel.

And for the clip ... Same Bat Time (http://www.rosswalker.co.uk/tv_sounds/sounds_files_20130625_8133091/batman/bat-time_x.wav)

I guess you mean Sarah Jane Adventures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Jane_Adventures).  I bang that with Sarah Connor Chronicles some times.  For me the brain thinks too many segways while typing :)

The Adventures are just good clean fun.  Like Robert Heinlein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Heinlein) work always considered 'Young Adult' writing (probably because most of the critics couldn't understand him :) ), the Adventures are .. well .. for the young ones in all of us.

I am currently watching the fifth series of the new Doctor Who, the first series with the eleventh doctor. I was sceptical before going in, but luckily I am loving it so far. But whereas I had problems with the tenth doctor because the voice constantly makes me think of Arnold Rimmer and Mr Brittas, I have a similar problem with the character of Amy Pods, though here it is not quite as disturbing. Her looks reminds me of Pam Beesly from The Office and she sounds like Jennifer Aniston.
