Thanks for the warning... I was going to eventually get this one because I am a huge fan of Jennifer Garner... ever since I first saw her on Alias.

My Thoughts:
Another movie I am disappointed in. I bought it, because I am a fan of Zooey Deschanel and Christopher Lloyd. The movie feels like a Clerks ripoff without the witty dialog. Christopher Lloyd plays essentially his Taxi character.
Next I will have to watch a movie I know I like from my unwatched pile before I loose interest in this marathon

My Thoughts:
It was time for a film I know I like to save this marathon. I saw this at the cinema and I really liked it.
I first came to attention of this film when I saw the trailer and saw that Claire Danes is in it. She stars as a star ;D. A role she plays really well.
What I liked about this movie: Though it walks a fine line to being a cheesy fairy tell/fantasy movie, it never crosses the line to it. Most times saved by some wise cracking ghosts ;D

This movie also includes a hilarious supporting role for Robert De Niro and also Rick Gervais has a nice cameo.

If you like Princess Bride, I really recommend to check out this movie.

Admit it, you forgot to check your brain at the door... ;) Seriously, I just watched this recently and it held up very well from what I remembered. It's still the same cheesy over the top stupid Arnie-action... Nothing to write home about, but I had 90min of fun with it.

"M" (Judi Dench), head of the British Secret Service, sends the newly-promoted 007 on his first mission that takes him to Madagascar, the Bahamas and eventually leads him to Montenegro to face Le Chiffre, a ruthless financier under threat from his terrorist clientele, who is attempting to restore his funds in a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale. "M" places Bond under the watchful eye of the Treasury official Vesper Lynd. At first skeptical of what value Vesper can provide, Bond's interest in her deepens as they brave danger together. Le Chiffre's cunning and cruelty come to bear on them both in a way Bond could never imagine, and he learns his most important lesson: Trust no one.

My Thoughts:
I have mixed feelings about this movie.
One the one hand, I like the portrayal of the new bond and I like the direction they were going with the character.
But on the other hand the main plot leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.
The first half an hour, Bond was chasing some guy for whatever reasons (apparently it was a bomb maker), which got him into trouble with M because he killed that guy on the ground of an embassy.
Then after some investigations he goes Poker playing. Seems the bad guy needs money and his plan is to win at a Poker game.
First Bond looses and almost dies because of poisoning. Then all of a sudden he gets another shot at the game (I am not a Poker player, but I thought the aim in Hold 'em is to get the other guys terminated. How can you join again, when you have lost all in an "All In"? Or did I miss something and it was a new game?
Finally he has won the money. The bad guy is not happy and is now after Bond because of it.
After this is done, Bond decides that he is now in love with the girl he was with at the Poker game all of a sudden. Bond resigns from MI6 to be with this girl.
But then she deceives him with the Poker money because she needs it for the ransom for her boyfriend. Bond is now bitter and it seems now that this is the reason the filmmakers want us to give for why Bond never gets close to the Bond girls.

Final thought: The new Bond (character) has some promise if the scriptwriting gets better with the next movies.

It's a while since I saw it, but it was more of a new round as opposed to a new game. Poker keeps going as long as the players have money to buy in to the next round; Bond lost because he ran out after being a bit careless. M had authorised the funds, but Vespa was there to make sure it wasn't wasted and she refused to release more. Felix though believed Bond was capable and had a far better chance of winning than him, so he stepped down and gave Bond his chips. Hence he could continue...

Plot:
Only three days before their high school festival, guitarist Kei (Yuu Kashii), drummer Kyoko (Aki Maeda of 'Battle Royale'), and bassist Nozumi (Shiori Sekine) are forced to recruit a new lead vocalist for their band. They choose Korean exchange student Son (Doona Bae of 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance'), though her comprehension of Japanese is a bit rough!

It's a race against time as the group struggles to learn three tunes for the festival's rock concert--including a classic '80s punk-pop song by the Japanese group The Blue Hearts called "Linda Linda"...

My Thoughts:
This is far from a cinematic masterpiece, but I enjoyed this movie. It has a realistic feel to it. It is about a bunch of girls who are participating in an high school event as a rock band. In the beginning they are much in need of practice but improve over the course of the movie with a lot of practice.
The most fun part is the Korean exchange student they asked to be the singer as they were short of a vocalist. I found the interaction of the Korean girl with the others somehow hilarious.
What I always find amazing is, that when I watch Japanese live-action movies set in high schools, how much the environment and school events matches those in animes. This is what makes animes so good, as they often portray stuff as it were live-action.

Also a lot of familiar faces from movies like Death Note, Battle Royale and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

Robert DeNiro did a good job. I am not familiar with Robert DeNiro's earlier work, so I would have probably not recognized him here as a young man, wouldn't it have been for his mole

The bits and pieces I saw of Godfather never made me think: "I have to see this movie!"
It rather always seemed like a movie I would not enjoy  :bag:

Also, almost always when I give a movie everybody was raving about a chance, even though my instinct told me that I wouldn't like it, I found the movie tedious to watch until the end.

I dare you to find me a trailer of Godfather after which there is nothing left for me to do then order this trilogy  ;D

Marge ist zutiefst über Homers Tölpelhaftigkeit erbost, während ein rachelüsterner Mob sich auf den Weg zum Hause der Simpsons macht. A successful translation of the series to the big screen. Though it gets a little boring halfway through the movie. In the beginning they played a little with the fact, that this is now a movie, but later on it succumbs to being a regular Simpsons episode.

I dare you to find me a trailer of Godfather after which there is nothing left for me to do then order this trilogy  ;D

I'm not sure such a trailer exists for a film like The Godfather. It isn't a story with moments that can be shown out of context like a typical blockbuster. You should see Parts I and II as a whole so that all its layers can work together, and the monumental performances can reward your patience. That said, here's a trailer for Part I:

Godfather Part I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf16Vc3iZjE)

The Godfather Part II is more ambitious and is one of the very best screenplays, because it follows the continuing saga of Michael Corleone, but also tells the story of his father as a young man. The way the two fold together is wonderful. So try this, but to be honest, the first minute is a waste as it is just a list of the Oscars the film won:

Godfather Part II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJr92K_hKl0)

Finally, here is the ending of Godfather Part II! I haven't gone mad, it gives nothing away. It's a nostalgic flashback as Michael thinks back to a time before the story started. Although seemingly nothing happens, it encapsulates much of what the saga was about in a single scene. It's incredibly powerful coming at the end of watching both films, but I think if you can find something to enjoy in the characters and the style, then you should run, not walk, to a local DVD emporium and furnish your collection immediately!

Godfather Part II Ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OKIQ16a7VE&feature=related)

Now I don't push things onto anyone (in fact, I like you also reject things that have been hyped up too far), so I simply present these as they are and should you not be persuaded, then fine.

Of course, you'll be a soulless husk of an individual, but hey... if you're happy, you're happy!  :tease:

I love the LotR movies too, but they are flawed and I can certainly understand where you are coming from. Although both trilogies started as books, LotR feels like it should just be a book to me, as I think a lot of the point is lost in translation. Godfather though was crafted with the author into a perfect screenplay.

Pete, I'm not sure they are your type of films anyway (no vampires or Bullocks!), but it's worth noting they aren't typical mob films. Well, not what I would consider mob anyway (Goodfellas, Scarface, etc). It uses two generations of a crime family as a metaphor for the failure of the American dream. Coppola didn't even want to make it when he thought it was just a story about the Mafia (a word that is never used in the film) and the characters are far too complex to just think of as mobsters.

This is searing, can't-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con - or a cop - with a gun.

My Thoughts:
Another one of those cases, that a film is hyped and has won a lot of awards, but me I was not so impressed with it.
Sure it is well made, it has a superb cast and some scenes which I liked, but overall it was not all that great. Definetely not a must-see from my point of view.

If you liked the core story, Tom, you should check out the original version, a Korean film called Infernal Affairs. More Michael Mann in design, it is shorter and leaner. I really enjoyed The Departed, but I think the first one services the story much better in many respects.

When going in, I thought when I like this movie I will buy the original trilogy. After watching the movie I was not so keen on the original anymore. Maybe I will give it another chance after your recommendation. Though I only know two Michael Mann movies: Hancock (which I liked) and Aviator (which I didn't like). Both in which he was producer and not director. So I am not sure if it a good thing for me if it is more Michael Mann in design.

Thanks, Achim! Always get 'em wrong way around... :bag:

Mann may have produced both those movies, but they certainly aren't his by design. I do specifically mean what he has directed, in particular Heat. But even then, Infernal Affairs is much shorter.

So long as you did enjoy the story, Infernal Affairs is worth a go.

My Thoughts:
Boring. I only bought this movie, because it was bundled with "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry".
This movie didn't have any new ideas and was not even remotely funny.
And for a simple comedy much too long.

'Waiting for Guffman's' Christopher Guest directs and many of that film's stars (including Fred Willard as a loopy commentator) reunite for this zany look at dog show participants (and the pooches who love them). Join the fun as Mayflower Kennel Club competitors - a fly-fishing shop owner from Pine Nut, NC (Guest), Shih Tzu-doting partners (Michael McKean and John Michael Higgins), squabbling yuppies (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock), a dim-bulb trophy wife (Jennifer Coolidge) and her ace handler (Jane Lynch) and a married couple (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) who dream up ditties about terriers - vie for the top prize. It's howlarious!

My Thoughts:
Another Christopher Guest mockumentary. It has a few good laughs. Eugene Levy is brilliant as always. Too bad Harry Shearer isn't in this one.

My Thoughts:
I first came to attention of this movie, when I saw its trailer on another DVD. The impression I got was that of a movie similar in style to Amelié.
But because the cover of this DVD put me a little off (and also the stupid English title), it took me almost four months to finally watch it. I almost regret not doing so sooner. It was a great movie!
The imaginary was a little reminiscent of Amelié but this movie has a character of its own.

I hereby declare this marathon closed  :)

I am surprised I have managed to almost watch all the movies that I had planned to watch in these two weeks. For a while it didn't look like I can manage it. There were some high and lows in the selected movies.
Only one movie is left: Fido
I have seen this one recently (it is a good movie) and I'd rather watch "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" now as I have waited for it :)
