WOOHOO! Only 2 more days and it will be that time of the year again! Time for my favorite marathon of the year! My month long horror/Halloween marathon! Normally every year I try to break my current standing record... but that is just not realistic for me to attempt now that I am back to work full time again. Can you believe work will just not allow me to take the full month off  to watch movies? LOL So I have to make a new goal for me this year...

My Goal:
To be honest with you... I don't even know if this goal is realistic as I can't remember the last time I attempted this marathon while working a full time job... but this year my goal is: There is 31 days in October... so I will be attempting to watch at least 31 movies and 31 TV episodes before the end of the month. No goal on shorts though I will track/count these separately if I watch any. Shorts will not count towards the totals of movies of TV episodes.

Wish me luck!... I am going to need it!

First question for this thread (you knew they would come)...

I got the 2014 version of Godzilla recently...

Profiler lists this film as Sci-Fi, Adventure and Horror. While I see the logic... there is a giant monster or two (never actually seen this film yet so please no spoilers!)... should this film really be considered horror?

Basically want to know if this film should be included in this marathon or not... so opinions?

No "Horror" IMO.
Except if you considered "The Day After Tomorrow" to be horror.

I would not count this as horror as well. agree with Michael, it's rather a disaster movie...

Blood From the Mummy's Tomb
Year of Release: 1971
Directed By: Seth Holt
Starring: Andrew Kier, Valerie Leon, James Villiers, Hugh Burden, George Coulouris
Genre: Horror

Overview:
A British expedition team in Egypt discovers the ancient sealed tomb of the evil Queen Tera. But when one of the archeologists steals a mysterious ring from the corpse's severed hand, he unleashes a relentless curse upon his beautiful daughter. Is the voluptuous young woman now a reincarnation of the diabolical sorceress or has the curse of the mummy returned to reveal its horrific revenge?

Andrew Keir (QUATERMASS AND THE PIT) and the luscious Valerie Leon star in this supernatural shocker based on Bram Stoker's classic novel JEWEL OF THE SEVEN STARS.

My Thoughts:
This is an atmospheric, romantic, Gothic horror style tale that Hammer Films was so well known for.  We have all the elements we need - possession, a powerful magical being whose good or evil is questionable, a beautiful woman with ample cleavage, the concerned boyfriend, the worried father who knows more than he lets on, and the dastardly manipulator who thinks he can control things (and of course, he can't).  The ending is left open.  All of the performances are quite good, though Valerie Leon's Margaret/Tera and James Villiers's Corbeck stand out the most.  While I liked Andrew Keir's portrayal of her father, I can't help but wonder what Peter Cushing (one of my favorite actors) would have done with the role.  If the choices in design (clothes, cars, sets, etc) don't always match in era, it only adds to the otherworldly feel of the film.  I enjoyed it a lot and would recommended for fans of Hammer's style of horror.

The Body Snatcher
Year of Release: 1945
Directed By: Robert Wise
Starring: Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Henry Daniell, Edith Atwater, Russell Wade
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Boris Karloff plays the title role in the Lewton adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's The Body Snatcher, directed with subtle calculation by versatile Robert Wise. A doctor (Henry Daniell) needs cadavers for medical studies and Karloff is willing to provide them - one way or another. Don't miss his scene with fellow horror icon Bela Lugosi.

My Thoughts:
This is a film about the evil that men do. There is nothing supernatural here, simply two men who do evil things - one for a 'higher' calling, the other more honestly - and a good man with little backbone who, unable to refuse his mentor, is strung along for the ride. Yes, the doctor does do good work in medicine, but do the ends justify the means?

The film has an intelligent, literate screenplay, as befits its origin in a Robert Lewis Stevenson story. The atmosphere is appropriately cold, and everyone does a great job. Henry Daniell's McFarlane is quite good, but the standout of course is Karloff. He is absolutely superb. His Gray is a wicked, amoral villain - but he's kind to children, and honest in his own way. He knows who he is and what he does, and that is itself a kind of virtue.

Highly recommended.

This is my favorite film in the "Val Lewton Horror Collection" box set. It is a film I enjoyed every second of. The thing about this horror film is it is something that can and probably did really happen. This is a true classic with an amazing cast. If you never seen this one before... it is one I highly recommend. A must see.

The Haunting
Year of Release: 1963
Directed By: Robert Wise
Starring: Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn
Genre: Horror

Overview:
"It was an evil house from the beginning, a house that was born bad." The place is the 90-year-old mansion called Hill House. No one lives there. Or so it seems. But please do come in. Because even if you don't believe in ghosts, there's no denying the terror of "The Haunting."

Robert Wise returned to psychological horror for this much admired, first screen adaptation of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House." Four people come to the house to study its supernatural phenomena. Or has the house drawn at least one of them to it? The answer will unnerve you in this "elegantly sinister scare movie. It's good fun" (Pauline Kael, "5001 Nights at the Movies").

My Thoughts:
What a great film!  There's no blood, no gore, no monsters - everything is completely unseen, and you never find out what exactly is going on.  Yet that only makes the events more sinister.  The house is perfectly realized, unsettling from the moment you see it.  The atmosphere is thick, stifling, and genuinely creepy.

The performances are all quite good - though I never liked Eleanor's character, I thought Julie Harris did a good job with her.  However, what really shines for me is the direction, cinematography and design.  The camera angles, sound, lighting, everything about the way the film is made make it so very, very good.  Highly recommended.

I really want to get this one on blu-ray.

What happens next is only known because of the footage they left behind.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
This is one of those "found footage" films. So if you do not like that style of movie then this one is definitely not for you. I personally enjoy that style of movie. It is definitely not the best one of this type that I have seen... but I did enjoy it. I like that they had Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter's sister on Dexter) in this movie. Since first seeing her on Dexter I have become a fan of her's. I liked the base storyline. I liked how they had fun with Jennifer Carpenter's character's interaction with the firemen before things got serious... and I liked how things progressed once they got to the apartment complex. Though I do think some of the scenes were a little too dark which took away from the enjoyment a little.

My Thoughts:
This is one that is in Danae Cassandra's collection. My first thought when I saw the opening credits... Vincent Price! A favorite of mine... can't go wrong here. And it didn't go wrong. I enjoyed this one quite a bit... it isn't my favorite Vincent Price movie out there... but it is definitely a good one.. one I hope to add to my own collection at some point.

This film is an anthology... it has 3 separate stories in the one film.... all three starring Vincent Price. My favorite segment is the last one... very good. Followed by the first segment... which I also enjoyed quite a bit. the second segment unfortunately left some to be desired. But over all I would say this one is definitely worth the time put in to watch it. Recommended.

This is a movie I have always enjoyed quite a bit and watch every year in my big horror marathon. It has a nice mixture of horror and comedy that is just fun to watch. I really liked Linnea Quigley's character in this one. And thought it was a nice touch that they made it so her worse fear is realized in this movie. I just see this one to be a lot of fun... and when I watch this every October I then know my horror marathon is a go. This is one that is definitely worth the time put in to watch it.

My Thoughts:
Just finished this one. I definitely prefer the original over this remake. Don't get me wrong... it has it's moments to make it entertaining enough to watch... but leaves a lot to be desired. There is a scene or two that is overly gross when it doesn't have to be. Some of the special effects are not very convincing... and don't get me wrong... I am no prude. I like seeing a naked girl as much as the next straight guy... but this one had nude scenes to the point that it pretty much got boring. Look another topless woman... yawn. So... I would say if you can watch this one for free... go for it... why not? But it is not one would really recommend. It is no more then average... maybe slightly below average in my opinion.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Year of Release: 1948
Directed By: Charles T. Barton
Starring: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, Glenn Strange
Genre: Comedy, Horror

Overview:
Comedy meets horror when Bud and Lou encounter Frankenstein's monster, Dracula and The Wolf Man!

My Thoughts:
This is a very fun romp combining comedy and horror. Abbott and Costello are always funny, and it's a treat to see Bela Lugosi as Dracula again. Sure, there are lots of laughs, but the horror elements are kinda spooky and the monsters are treated with a lot of respect. The film works because of that - it doesn't fall into being too silly or too much of a spoof. The spoof elements combine nicely with the film also being an homage to Universal's classic monsters. Lots of fun, highly recommended.

Twice Told Tales
Year of Release: 1963
Directed By: Sidney Salkow
Starring: Vincent Price, Sebastian Cabot, Brett Halsey, Beverly Garland,
Genre: Horror

Overview:
It's spine-tingling terror... in triplicate! "Virtuoso of horror" (Los Angeles Times) Vincent Price dials up the depravity in this spellbinding trilogy of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "all-chiller" (LA Herald-Examiner) classics! My Thoughts:
This anthology film stars one of my all-time favorite actors, Vincent Price, so there's no way as far as I'm concerned to go too far wrong here. If you like Price, you'll enjoy this film.

That's not to say that all things are equal. The final story, "The House of Seven Gables" is by far the best one, and has the most atmosphere and horror attached. Price's character is also the only truly villainous one in this piece, unlike the tortured characters in the other two stories. The first story, "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment," is also quite good, the horror being more subtle here than in the final piece, but nonetheless present. The middle story, "Rappaccini's Daughter," I find to be the weakest and most predictable. There is the horror of the situation, but overall it is also the least 'horrific' if one can use the term here.

Recommended for fans of Price, or fans of 60's style horror. If you liked Tales of Terror (which is arguably better, but still...) you'll like this.

Near Dark
Year of Release: 1987
Directed By: Kathryn Bigelow
Starring: Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein
Genre: Horror, Western, Crime

Overview:
Country boy Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar) whittles away the quiet rural nights hunting local girls – but when he falls prey to the mysterious and beautiful Mae (Jenny Wright), Caleb unknowingly becomes the hunted. Mae is no ordinary girl, Caleb soon learns: she is part of an outlaw band of vampires, and their love is about to lure him into a terrifying world of bloodlust, mayhem and absolute horror. Will Caleb pay the ultimate price for love and eternal life – or will he find a way to defeat the evil growing inside him each night NEAR DARK?

My Thoughts:
This is a stylish hybrid film, bridging horror, western and crime genres together to create a uniquely modern look at the vampire.  Perhaps one shouldn't use the term here, they certainly don't in the film, but it is still definitely a vampire film.  All of the actors do an excellent job, and the pull Caleb finds himself in between his two contrasting families creates quite a bit of excellent tension as you wonder whether he will accept his new family and new life, or continue to cling to his humanity.  Jenny Wright's portrayal of Mae is also just about the best portrayal of Stockholm Syndrome I've ever seen.  There is a bit of gore here, but nothing too bad and all necessary to the story.  Well worth a watch.

Scream and Scream Again
Year of Release: 1969
Directed By: Gordon Hessler
Starring: Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Judy Huxtable, Alfred Marks
Genre: Suspense/Thriller, Horror

Overview:
They hunger for power, thirst for blood...and make each helpless, pleading victim Scream and Scream Again! Horror legends Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing star in this "masterwork of style and suspense" (Los Angeles Times) about a group of sadistic madmen plotting to take over the world - ONE SEVERED BODY PART AT A TIME!

My Thoughts:
This is a sort of pulp-trash kind of movie, and is really more of a suspense/thriller than a horror film - for all that three of the greats of the horror genre (Price, Lee and Cushing) are all present in the film.  For all that star power and name recognition, none of them are the star of the film either - it's really more of an ensemble piece, and Cushing's character is really a long cameo.  The story isn't told in a linear fashion, and at first all the disparate pieces seem to have no connection to each other.  They tie together in the end, though the film does a good job of keeping you wondering how, and the story does make sense then.

For having such great actors, they are really underutilized and I would have liked to see more of them.  The plot has a lot of loose ends that aren't tied up at the end, and even after you understand what's been going on you still have a lot of unanswered questions.  I enjoyed the film but I don't know that I'd recommend it for horror fans.  If you like Price, Lee or Cushing, and want a complete oeuvre of the work of any of them, by all means watch this.  If you like some of the wacky, disjointed cult films that came out in the late 60's/early 70's, then you'd likely enjoy this.  But it's not really a horror film, at least in my opinion.

A dream inspires him to return to the couple's lakeside retreat hoping to fine answers about his wife's sudden death – but he is plagued by ever-escalating nightmares and mysterious ghostly visitations from Sara Tidwell (Anika Noni Rose, Dreamgirls), a blues singer whose spirit lingers in the house. The Woman in Black
Year of Release: 2012
Directed By: James Watkins
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer
Genre: Horror, Suspense/Thriller

Overview:
Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a widowed lawyer whose grief has put his career in jeopardy, is sent to a remote village to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric.  But upon his arrival, it soon becomes clear that everyone in the town is keeping a deadly secret.  Although the townspeople try to keep Kipps from learning their tragic history, he soon discovers that the house belonging to his client is haunted by the ghost of a woman who is determined to find someone and something she lost... and no one, not even the children, are safe from her vengeance.

My Thoughts:
What a great ghost story!  It has all the elements I like - loads of atmosphere, Gothic style chills, and well-developed, interesting characters with motive.  Yes, this is a traditional style ghost story - heavy on mystery and figuring out what is going on and why it is happening - but there are plenty of scares present, and the ghosts are suitably frightening and unnerving.

I'll admit I bought it for the combination of the interesting sounding story and the presence of Daniel Radcliffe, and he didn't disappoint me.   I think he has a great future as an actor and found his performance to be very convincing.  The production designs are all wonderfully creepy, and the score contributes to the feelings of anticipation, dread and isolation.

Well worth a watch if you like this style of ghost story.

It is a good ghost story... well worth the time put in to watch it.

I really enjoyed The Woman in Black when I watched it too.  Very creepy type of ghost story that doesn't resort to lots of gore.  I originally wanted to see it because of Radcliffe too.  :)  I think it is a lot more talented than some people have given him credit for.

The Skull
Year of Release: 1965
Directed By: Freddie Francis
Starring: Peter Cushing, Patrick Wymark, Christopher Lee
Genre: Horror

Overview:
The Skull weaves a chilling tale surrounding the real-life terrors of the Marquis de Sade. Featuring outstanding performances by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, this tale introduces Dr. Christopher Maitland (Cushing) who purchases the infamous skull of the Marquis de Sade, a decision that he was warned against by his good friend - and previous skull owner - Matthew Phillips (Lee). The question is whether or not Dr. Maitland will live to regret his decision.

My Thoughts:
This was a flawed, but still interesting film about a skull possessed of an evil spirit and what befalls an occult collector who acquires it. The performances are excellent. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are always a pleasure to watch, and they don't disappoint here. If you enjoy those two actors, that is enough to recommend the film. Patrick Wymark also turns in a great performance as the shady Marco. It's a low budget film, and sometimes the effects are a bit obviously low budget, but the sets are handsome and Cushing's occult study is suitably crammed with creepy things. The dream sequence is a bit of a standout, if for nothing else than Cushing's performance in it and the wtf moment that it enters the film. The pov shots from inside the skull feel gimicky, and the film feels a bit overlong - the idea probably would have worked better as an anthology film, following the skull through the centuries instead of jumping directly from disinterment (and right after) to Cushing's era. Still, I enjoyed the film and would recommend it if you like Lee and Cushing.

Vault of Horror
Year of Release: 1973
Directed By: Roy Ward Baker
Starring: Daniel Massey, Terry Thomas, Curt Jurgens, Michael Craig, Tom Baker
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Get ready for to descend into the darkness of horror!  In this "frequently macabre and eerily funny" (Cue) collection of tales, five unsuspecting hotel guests step out of an elevator into a vault deep underground.  Trapped with no way out, each guest shares a gruesome story of an encounter with death.  But as the stories unfold, the men begin to suspect that their presence in the vault is no coincidence, and they may have already found that the only way out...is death!

My Thoughts
This is a decent low-budget 70's portmanteau horror film.  I found all of the performances solid, but not truly outstanding.  Tom Baker's, I thought, was the best, and the only one with any kind of dimension to it.  All of the other main characters I found to be unsympathetic an one-note.  Perhaps this is the result of the short run time of each of the stories limiting how much they could develop.  The first tale, "Midnight Mess" and the fourth, "Bargain in Death," I found to be the weakest of the lot.  "The Neat Job" had a good portrayal of the dilemma of the housewife with no outside job.  "This Trick'll Kill You" had a really good story, but the low-budget special effects made the climax more laughable than horrific - they really shouldn't have tried to show so much, but gone with more implication in that scene.  Finally, the last story, "Drawn and Quartered," which was Baker's story, was the best of the lot, and the effects here I thought were handled better.  Overall, not a bad film, not a bad watch if you like this sort of thing, but I've seen better and enjoyed other films more.

Körkarlen (The Phantom Carriage)
Year of Release: 1921
Directed By: Victor Sjöström
Starring: Victor Sjöström, Hilda Borgström, Tore Svennberg, Astrid Holm
Genre: Drama, Horror

Overview:
The last person to die on New Year's Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death's chariot and work tirelessly collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen), directed by the father of Swedish cinema, Victor Sjöström. The story, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, concerns an alcoholic, abusive ne'er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects.

My Thoughts:
This is an excellent film. It's a grim subject - basically, how one man destroys his life and the lives of those around him. Yet, even though this man is really, a terrible human being, he doesn't come off as completely unlikable. This can be laid at the feet of Sjöström's excellent portrayal. He is also directing, and does an excellent job there too.

The standout scenes are those with Death's carriage. The Phantom Carriage becomes an actual phantom on the screen due to skillful double exposure techniques, and it truly appears ghostly and otherworldly. The cinematography is fabulous.

This is one of the best silent films I've seen, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys intelligent, discerning cinema.

However, unlike what it was marked in Profiler - this is more melodrama than horror.

Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde
Year of Release: 1920
Directed By: John S. Robertson
Starring: John Barrymore, Charles Lane, George Stevens, Brandon Hurst
Genre: Horror

Overview:
The fifth American screen version, many regard this as the greatest of all adaptations of Stevenson's classic tale with Barrymore's performance being one of cinema's finest (equally as many regard his performance as excessive and place the 1932 version, with Frederic March, above it). Though it is often claimed that Barrymore used no make up for his transformation scenes this not strictly true. The first change from Jekyll to Hyde was achieved by the actor dislocating his jaw and contorting his facial features but thereafter makeup was used.

My Thoughts:
This is a very good film, held up almost entirely by Barrymore's excellent, chilling portrayal.  His Jeckyll is suitably altruistic in the beginning and conflicted, troubled, remorseful - but unable to cease giving in - after his transformation.  Barrymore's Hyde, meanwhile, is as menacing, distasteful and evil as one can imagine - yet still a charismatic character when he wants to be.  It's a fabulous performance, and one can easily see why Barrymore was one of the most celebrated actors of his day.

The rest of the film is up to snuff, if not as excellent as Barrymore.  The script is relatively tight and moves quickly, and the supporting cast are fine in their roles.  If the acting styles seem a bit broad, a bit over-the-top, or the makeup seems, maybe, more than a bit heavy, one must consider that this film was released in 1920, and as a silent film has different conventions than modern film making.  Silent films owe much more to stage productions, where such things are the norm.

Worth watching - both for its own merits and as a classic piece of silent film.  Recommended.

The Call of Cthulhu
Year of Release: 2005
Directed By: Andrew Leman
Starring: Matt Foyer, John Bolen, Ralph Lucas, Chad Fifer
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Written in 1926, just before the advent of "talking" pictures, The Call of Cthulhu is one of the most famous and influential tales of H. P. Lovecraft, the father of gothic horror. Now the story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score. Using the "Mythoscope" process ~ a mix of modern and vintage techniques ~ the filmmakers have worked to create the most authentic and faithful screen adaptation of a Lovecraft story yet attempted.

My Thoughts:
This is a modern film, made in the style of an old-fashioned silent film.  When this turned up at the store, I knew I had to have it. I adore Lovecraft, and this very short film (47 minutes!) is as authentic an adaptation of this story as will every be done. This is an ultra-low-budget picture, so don't expect high-tech effects, but the performances are solid and the film is eerie and altogether delightful. Recommended.

One thing I really liked about this... is you don't have to be a horror fan to enjoy this monster movie. My brother (who is not much of a horror fan at all) loves this series of movies. This is what I personally call a "light horror". It is a nice mix of horror and comedy. And even now when I watch it (after watching the entire series of Reba) don't recognize Reba McIntyre when she is on the screen... though her voice with her accent is unmistakable. The Blu-ray release I have is pretty decent. It contains all the films and has a nice collection of extras! What more can you ask?

Who is this brutal costumed killer? Could it be the mysterious magician (David Copperfield) with a talent for swordplay...a former frat pledge with an axe to grind...or any number of other guests, both invited and uninvited?

My Thoughts:
This is one I somehow never seen before... or at least don't remember ever seeing before. It is not a terrible movie... but I definitely seen better. The storyline seemed to be a good idea but they could have followed through better. I found that I didn't care for most the characters as much as I should have and the basic plot I seen many times before. Granted this film is up over 30 years old so this one did it before many of the others. But that is just comes with the fact of not seeing it when it was first released. It is worth the time put in to watch it... but don't expect too much from it.

My Thoughts:
This is one we watched the other day and I forgot to write the review for till now. I found this one to be an entertaining... even if confusing film. It is a good story and has some good atmosphere. And you do leave the film still with some unanswered questions.  Though I do wonder if a second viewing wouldn't help with that at least some.

Plot:
IN THE TRADITION OF CHRISTINE & THE CAR

It prowls the streets of downtown Chicago – a dark, menacing car with no driver and a mind of its own. it can transform itself into other vehicles where it lures unsuspecting strangers inside and suddenly feeds on their flesh. But when it's towed into an underground garage, the overnight crew of mechanics and secretaries are unexpectedly trapped with a furious four-wheeled – possibly alien – hybrid killing machine that can morph, think and take pleasure in hunting humans. And tonight, its hunger for destruction is about to go into overdrive. ODED FEHR (The Mummy, Resident Evil: Extinction), ADRIEN DORVAL (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), RYAN KENNEDY ("Caprica") and MELANIE PAPALIA ("Painkiller Jane") star in this full-throttle thriller from ERIC VALETTE, the director of Malefique and One Missed Call.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
Despite this not being about a possessed car... this one is a blatant rip-off of Stephen King's Christine. But hey... I am a realist. I realize this will happen with any popular storyline. That in of itself doesn't make it a bad film. And while I have seen many better I wouldn't call this one a bad film. It is an entertaining way to waste an hour and a half. Just don't go in expecting a masterpiece. One thing this film got right is making a strong female lead. I always preferred a strong female lead. I mean come on... who wants a female lead that alll she does is scream, whimper, cry, run, fall and die? Give me a woman with some fight to her any day of the week! Anyway... far from a great film but a decent way to waste some time.

I've watched some, but not as many as I had hoped to...or that I have in previous years.

and I'm irritated...I can't find Poltergeist.  Now I'm thinking a friend borrowed it..just have to remember to ask them about it.

I know.  I have used it before.  Then I stopped..mostly because I didn't remember until later..and I haven't loaned as many movies in the last few years.

The Awakening
Year of Release: 2011
Directed By: Nick Murphy
Starring: Rebecca Hall, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, Isaac Hempstead-Wright
Genre: Suspense/Thriller, Horror

Overview:
They say, the boy was scared to death. When the death of a child at a boarding school is blamed on a ghost, hoax exposer Florence Cathcart is certain that science and reason can explain it. But the truth she discovers is more terrifying than she could ever imagine, and soon the ghost hunter becomes the hunted. Starring Rebecca Hall (The Town), Dominic West (John Carter) and Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter films), The Awakening is a terrifying mystery filled with haunting twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

My Thoughts:
This was a beautiful, melancholy ghost story.  It's an elegant little film, with a wonderful, thick atmosphere filled with grief and guilt.  The cast is quite strong in their roles, especially Hall, West and Staunton.  It isn't a particularly scary film, but it is haunting.  However the film moves at a slow pace, taking its time to develop the story, and while I don't mind that, and think it works well for this story, some viewers might.  Also, the ending is somewhat ambiguous, which again, I think works for the story, but some might object.  Recommended if you like old-fashioned ghost stories and don't mind the slow pace.

Lèvres de sang (Lips of Blood)
Year of Release: 1975
Directed By: Jean Rolin
Starring: Jean-Loup Philippe, Annie Belle, Natalie Perrey
Genre: Horror

Overview:
LIPS OF BLOOD (Levres de sang) was considered by Jean Rollin to be the best, or most developed, story he ever wrote. Of all his films, it perhaps best transcends his tendencies toward the poetical and arcane, while remaining at the same time true to his most personal, recurring obsessions: childhood, nostalgia, lost love, romantic quests, the cinema, obsolescence. In the course of its telling, it may also touch on such unsavory topics as vampirism and incest, but it would not be an exaggeration to call LIPS OF BLOOD "Jean Rollin's Somewhere in Time."

Jean-Loup Philippe stars as Frédéric, a maternally-dominated young man who by chance is awakened to a dormant childhood memory by attending a launch party for a new perfume. A chateau pictured in the poster reminds him of a night, long ago, when he was lost and a beautiful young woman (Jennifer, played by Forever Emanuelle's Annie Belle) came out of nowhere to protect him through the night. Later, the woman—unaged—magically appears and beckons to him, and Frédéric finds his way back to the chateau and to her, uncovering some dark secrets about his family's past along the way.

My Thoughts:
This is my second Rolin film (we watched The Iron Rose last year), and I continue to be impressed with his work.  This is another beautiful film.  It's like visual poetry, dark, romantic, atmospheric.  The visuals, as in The Iron Rose, are simply gorgeous at points.  There isn't much dialog - large parts of the film are silent, leaving us to the ethereal, lyrical beauty of Rolin's visuals - and the pace is relatively slow.  This is horror as art, or art as horror.

I can't say I'd recommend it outright.  I think Rolin is likely an acquired taste.  I've enjoyed both films I've seen of his, and since watching this bought two more (Fascination and The Living Dead Girl), so I definitely enjoy his style, but I don't think it's for everyone.

I have to say, however, that the trailer does absolutely no justice to this film.  It shows most of a single scene near the end of the film, and gives one a completely different idea about the content of the film.  My mom, who had the same opinion of The Iron Rose as I did, was so completely turned off by the trailer that I watched Lips of Blood while she wasn't home.  She wants to see it now, though, after I told her about it.

Bechdel Test: Fail
