Plot:
For his second animated feature as director, Hayao Miyazaki adapted his own best-selling manga to make this epic masterpiece. A huge success when released in Japan back in 1984. NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND helped launch Studio Ghibli, and bears all the hallmarks of Miyazaki's later successes: fantastical worlds, great characters and stunning animation.

A thousand years after a great war, a seaside kingdom known as the Valley of the Wind is one of the only areas which remains populated. Led by the courageous Princess Nausicaä, the people of the Valley are engaged in a constant struggle with powerful insects called ohmu, who guard a poisonous jungle that is spreading across the Earth. Nausicaä and her brave companions, together with the people of the Valley, strive to restore the bond between humanity and earth.

My Thoughts:

Gorgeous. I didn't get a chance to do any comparison with my R1 DVD but everything seemed clearer with a greater depth of colour. Audio has been changed with this Blu-ray edition from Dolby Digital to LPCM but still mono, no remixing to surround. Optimum have supplied only the Japanese print, maybe that was all that was available in high definition, so there were no English or Disney credits but the English Voices were from the original Disney release.

The Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind US Blu-ray now has a release date of 8th March 2011, details here (http://www.amazon.com/Nausicaa-Valley-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-Combo/dp/B004CRR9G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1294318410&sr=8-1) for amazon.com.

8th. March 2011 is also the day that Disney finally get to release Studio Ghibli's 2006 Tales from Earthsea DVD in the US, now that the rights to everything Earthsea have lapsed from The Sci-Fi Channel.

The Blu and DVD release of The Borrower Arrietty (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWBS-1237) is scheduled for 6th June 2011 in Japan, hopefully the UK/EU/US releases won't be far behind.

Also the Blu release of Whisper of the Heart (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWBS-1238) is set for 20th July 2011 in Japan so that ought to be out in UK later in the year and possibly also in US. So far the UK Blu's of the back catalogue have been about 5 or 6 months after the Japan release with the US release a further few months.

Darn just read that the UK cinema release is this July and that the US cinema release isn't until February 2012 therefore my hoped for early release is probably not to be.

Hayao Miyazaki's homage to Jules Verne and Jonathan Swift, Castle in the Sky was the first feature film from the now legendary Studio Ghibli. Combining the Japanese master director's twin obsessions of eco-thriller and aerial escapades, it crashes a treasure hunt into a fight against evil for an unforgettable adventure.

Featuring the voices of Anna Paquin, James Van Der Beek and Mark Hamill.

My Thoughts:

The 3rd Ghibli Blu-ray release and the 2nd gorgeous upgrade. This time the presentation from Optimum Releasing is better as there are both the Japanese and English versions of the credits depending upon the language chosen.

Yes sorry that is a downside of Optimum Releasing. I will admit to surprise that Optimum/Madman are getting them before Disney unless it is because the US is region A like Japan and maybe Studio Ghibli's Japan distributors thought that the US releases would filter back too quickly to Japan.

I've now ordered The Borrower Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart from CDJapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/) although they are a tad expensive. Apparently they are region free and I'm tempted to get them early and, if these turn out OK, I may even get the future ones early from Japan as well.

Title: My Neighbours The Yamadas
Original Title: Houhokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun
Year: 1999
Director: Isao Takahata
Rating: PG
Length: 104 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: English: DTS-HD Master Audio: 5.1, Japanese: DTS-HD Master Audio: 5.1
Subtitles: English

Stars:
Yukiji Asaoka
Toru Masuoka
Masako Araki
Hayato Isohata
Naomi Uno

Plot:
A stylistic departure for Studio Ghibli, with writer-director Isao Takahata using digital production to create the feel of a moving watercolour sketch, My Neighbours The Yamadas follows the exploits of the Yamada family. Takahata charts the day-to-day life of husband and wife Takashi and Matsuko who, along with their two children, their dog, and Matsuko's live-in mother, navigate the pitfalls of modern life to often comic effect.

Featuring the voices of Jim Belushi, David Ogden Stiers and Molly Shannon, My Neighbours the Yamadas is a one-of-a-kind comic treat.

Full-length storyboard version of the film

My Thoughts:

As I said in my review of the DVD a weird film which takes some getting used to and because the colouring used is based on pastel shades with the drawings based on comic strips the upgrade to Blu-ray doesn't pop as much as Laputa: Castle in the Air. Still looks good though but maybe not an essential upgrade, also the only credits again are the Japanese ones.

But the Japan releases usually don't have English subtitles :( So there goes that idea... Maybe Hong Kong has some, I might have to check there, but then the quality might not be up to par with Optimum or Disney...

My Thoughts:

Another wonderful Studio Ghibli film in which Hayao Miyazaki wrote the screenplay based on Mary Norton's book The Borrowers. Although I have not read the books I had previously seen both the BBC TV series version and the John Goodman/Jim Broadbent film version and the tale told here is closer to the TV version and, from my understanding in reviews, the book rather than the film. Arriety and her family of little people live in harmony with the Human Beans, borrowing items that they need for day-to-day life. This all changes when a young boy joins the household and discovers Arriety.

As with other non Miyazaki films from Studio Ghibli the detailing of the backgrounds is still good but lacks the movement of the grass, trees and clouds that Mr. Miyazaki manages to create. However because of the inherent size of the main characters the insects and similar lifeforms are excellently detailed. The music for this film is supplied a Celtic harpist Cécile Corbel who fuses the Celtic and Japanese styles.

A wonderful 4 from me

My Thoughts:

Sorry to repeat but another wonderful upgrade. I hadn't noticed it before but there was a framing error with the end titles on the R1 DVD in which a little bit of follow up action on a bridge wasn't clearly shown. That problem does not exist in this copy. I quite like the case that these Japanese Studio Ghibli Collection Blu-rays come in and if it wasn't for the price I would be sorely tempted to replace my existing UK Optimum Blu-rays.

All three apparently contain English subtitles and are region free.

:hmmmm: I've got a bit behind here.

Arietty and The Whisper of the Heart both got UK Blu-ray releases on the 9th January 2012.

Tales from Earthsea and Howl's Moving Castle received their UK Blu-ray releases this past Monday the 25th June 2012. Copies owned and reviews to come.

The latest Studio Ghibli film in Japan, From Up on Poppy Hill (Kokurikozaka kara) a Goro Miyazaki film, received its Japanese Blu-ray release on the 20th June 2012 and a copy is on its way to me.

The next titles to get the Blu-ray treatment in Japan are Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbour Totoro with their release on 18th July 2012 and I have an order placed for My Neighbour Totoro. I did toy with the idea of buying Grave of the Fireflies as well as there is a limited edition box containing both these titles but decided to save my pennies.

Again these latest Japanese releases are reported to be region free and contain English subtitles.

The UK Blu-ray of My Neighbour Totoro now has a release date of 12th. November 2012. I was sure that Grave of the Fireflies Blu-ray had the same date but that is no longer shown.

The next Japanese Blu-rays will be Kiki's Delivery Service (Majo no Takkyubin) and Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro poro) on 5th. December 2012, again these are listed as region free with English subtitles.

I started collecting those Disney releases of Ghibli in the US. But while there is currently three more available I am hesitating to get them due to the high pricing (I only see them above $20). On the other hand Disney's quality is usually rather high.

How is the quality and pricing of those UK releases?

How is the quality and pricing of those UK releases?

The quality seems to me to be very good. The newer releases are generally available as a BD/DVD combo and upon release generally priced around £16.00. Maybe for you though one sticking point might be that the UK distributors, who were Optimum Releasing but have now become StudioCanal, have locked the Blu-rays to Region B unlike the Japanese or US releases, of course also the DVD will be Region 2 but that is less problematic.

Another odditiy is that the UK releases tend not to have English HoH subtitles unlike their Disney counterparts, this means that if you watch/listen to the dubbed version then the UK subtitles are still for the Japanese language track rather than subtitles for the English language track.

Thanks Dave, that helped a lot. Now I think that maybe I did look into this before and the a region B stopped me from going any further...

I would watch the films in their original Japnese version. So the subtitles should be for that! Normally reviewers complain about "dubtitles", when the subtitles are only for the English dub track and not for the original audio...

I remember you saying that you did watch in original language but I'd thought I'd point out that the dubtitles were not on the UK releases anyway.

Another thought I had was that Only Yesterday, which is in the next set of Blu-ray releases in Japan, has yet to appear in America on DVD so I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't get a US release in Blu. Reasons behind Disney's reticence to release Only Yesterday are in my review of the UK DVD here (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,6394.msg117324.html#msg117324).

So you also seem to recall that teh Disney releases have dubtitles...?

Well, I always thought that not knowing the original language dubtitles are less of an issue than if I would know it.

Sorry I probably didn't explain it properly. The Disney DVD releases usually had 2 English subtitle tracks. One was the subtitles for the Japanese language track and the other, usually listed as HoH subtitles, was for the English language tracks. It was this second HoH subtitles I was referring to as dubtitles.

You are quite knowledgable here  Thanks for explaining again!

As I said, I find dubtitles less troublesome than some others, but onbviously a direct translation from the original source is preferred.

I stated above that

The UK Blu-ray of My Neighbour Totoro now has a release date of 12th. November 2012. I was sure that Grave of the Fireflies Blu-ray had the same date but that is no longer shown.

The next Japanese Blu-rays will be Kiki's Delivery Service (Majo no Takkyubin) and Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro poro) on 5th. December 2012, again these are listed as region free with English subtitles.

It now appears that StudioCanal have pulled the release of Grave of the Fireflies Blu-ray and substututed it a Blu-ray release of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, still set for 12th. November. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is a 1979 film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki based on a very popular TV series in Japan.

'Grave of the Fireflies' is still on www.hmv.co.uk for 12 Nov. Someone at a Dutch site suggested it could have become a HMV 'only' release for the time being. Of course the other option is that HMV is just slow to remove the pulled title. No clue what is truth. No sign in the online shops yet for the 5 Dec. releases you mentioned.

I think that HMV just haven't pulled the tltle as they usually like to highlight their exclusives. Someone on Blu-ray.com emailed StudioCanal and they said Grave of the Fireflies wasn't on their release schedule for this year link (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=6385712&postcount=15). The Dec 5th releases are for the next titles in Japan, the rest of the world should follow a few months or more later. Generally UK has released them about 4 months after Japan and then US a few months after that.

Pom Poko
Porco Rosso
Only Yesterday
The Cat Returns
Mononoke Hime
Spirited Away (*)

As I detailed earlier in this thread Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro poro) was released in Japan on 5th. December 2012 and is listed as region free with English subtitles. I was waiting to see if StudioCanal were going to release it but as nothing has appeared so far I have now ordered from Japan and my copy arrived in the UK yesterday just waiting for customs notification and clearance now, probably another week before I get my mitts on it :(

and in my post above yours Porco Rosso gets its release later this month in Japan.

With respect to the remaining titles we are in the hands of Studio Ghibli and/or their Japanese Blu-ray producers/distributors as to when they do them, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'm annoyed that Grave of the Fireflies hasn't been released locally. I consider it an excellent movie, even though I've only watched it once. I'm keen to watch it again, but I'm caught up in that bizarre mental state where I know it's available "somewhere" on Blu-ray, and the DVD just ain't gonna cut it for me. :-\

Criterion is continuing their spine numbers from DVD days, so stuff that was previously on DVD will get a low number. Maybe something similar is going on? So maybe Totoro is 9, because that is what the DVD had...?

Sorry to come back so late but this has been discussed on the blu-ray.com forums where a couple of people wrote to Optimum and StudioCanal. The answers forthcoming from them made the matter even more confusing with the 1st reply saying that they were numbered in blu-ray release order until it was pointed out that Ponyo, the 1st release, had number 17 on it (the same as the DVD). Optimum came back and stated that future copies of this and Laputa would be renumbered. A later attempt at clarification from StudioCanal intimated that they were following Studio Ghibli guidelines on the numbering. Full details in this thread (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=166042) http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=166042. So my guess is that the logic used by the distributors is illogical.

No I hadn't. I can't see that he will let go fully though but maybe just take more of a background role as in he has retired a couple of times already. However I do wonder if it's to do with the Japanese reaction to his latest film Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) where whilst the film fared well in the cinemas it wasn't too well received with many reviewers.

As found in those threads I requested a renumbered print on the Facebook page of studio canal. Yesterday a reprint of the slipcover arrived. "Whisper of the Heart" now has number 11. Looks great as Studio Canal (Facebook: Studio Ghibli UK) really made a packaging effort to make sure the cover wasn't to be damaged during the postal trajectory.

The Wind Rises now has a UK release date of 29th September 2014.

Still no date for the UK release of Spirited Away though. No UK date either for Only Yesterday but I would imagine that StudioCanal aren't going to release this as there wasn't a Disney dub for it and my understanding is that the UK sales of the DVD were a bit disappointing.

Ocean Waves still has no date in Japan so it looks like that is being passed over, maybe not hi-defable as it was a TV movie.

So with the now reported, promised releases, I guess only Spirited Away and Only Yesterday are awaiting an announced publication in a region B with (at least) English subtitles?

For the record, I've seen Only Yesterday (http://www.amazon.fr/Omoide-Poroporo-souvenirs-goutte-Blu-ray/dp/B00BZR3HO8/ref=sr_1_22?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1401008901&sr=1-22&keywords=studio+ghibli) already a year out in France, but it sadly has only French subtitles. French isn't my strongpoint... :(
The question is, would it need an English dub? Isn't there some way to re-use from the DVD -- either subtitles or perhaps even the dubbing?
After all, it isn't a children or family movie. Nothing scary (unless one considers the female lead falling back on awkward memories at sometimes bad moments scary...), but not easy to understand or follow unless you've grown-up a bit I think.

BTW Am I missing a title perhaps?

Only Yesterday has a tortured history which I detailed in my review here (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,6394.msg117324.html#msg117324).

Does it need a dub? No not for me as I prefer to watch in original language and am happy to read the screen but I do realise that not all people are like minded. The Blu-ray is available in Japan and it does have English subtitles which why I was happy to buy it from there. I have purchased all my Japanese discs from cdjapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp) however the price is relatively high. Of course there may be cheaper alternatives or cheaper sites but I haven't bothered to investigate them.

As the original Western DVD release was a joint effort between Madman Australia and Optimum UK I did wonder if Australia had a release of it but the only listing I could find on Australian websites was for the DVD, none for the Blu-ray :(

Apart from Ocean Waves, which was a TV film and hasn't been Blu-rayed yet in Japan, there are none that I am aware of unless you start to count some of the various shorts and documentaries, most of which have never seen the light of day outside Japan, and of course non-Ghibli titles like Panda! Go Panda!. Of course there will be future films and I am willing to be corrected if I have missed any titles here and now.

I found some details of a Studio Ghibli film which totally passed me by The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2576852/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_1) directed by Isao Takahata (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0847223/?ref_=tt_ov_dr). This was released to Japanese cinemas in November 2013 so maybe a Japanese Blu-ray later this year. Apparently GKIDS have picked this up for a US cinema release. Thanks. I guess we'll have to wait a see what the final outcome is for Studio Ghibli presuming that a formal announcement will be made in the fullness of time. I hope they find a way forward as they do have animation directors who have acheived some success although admittedly not to the level of Miyazaki.

Very nice looking set  :congrats: I do like the look of the box.

Looking at the details on the Amazon DE site it would appear that the film discs are the existing releases rather than the re-mastered, extras-free editions in the Japanese set. I think I may have to cancel my pre-order but I'll wait for the details to appear on Amazon UK first to confirm.

Just a fair warning on this nice looking German box.

I live near the border and from time to time I visit German shops for good BluRay deals. I looked repeatedly at German Ghibli movie releases and they only have German and Japanese sound and German subtitles. No English. Scroll down on The Wind Rises (http://www.amazon.de/Wind-Studio-Ghibli-Blu-ray-Collection/dp/B00MF74XY0/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1414841805&sr=1-2&keywords=Wie+der+Wind+sich+hebt) (as an example) to see what I mean.

I assume this collection is all the individual releases together. So unless you're fluent in either Japanese or German (or both) it'll be just an expensive box. Just so you know...

Because the discs differ this way significantly from the English releases it is probably a different distributor. Meaning that it remains to be seen if something similar (and good looking) is to be released in the U.K.

A selection of pictures are now associated with the box set at amazon UK here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00M482XWE/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1P30GCB4TRD8TVN4GFEQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294), I don't know how to grab pictures from amazon so couldn't include them. Still no details about the discs though.

Yes the UK distributor is StudioCanal, not too sure who it is in Germany but I wouldn't have been buying those ones.

Hopefully a couple of images for the UK release will appear below. I note from this and comparing the release info on the German amazon that the UK release will include The Castle of Cagliostro.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya now has Japanese release date of the 3rd. December 2014. As with the other releases it is listed as Region Free with assorted audio and subtitles including English in both.

This has now been released in the US by Universal. I can't find any details for a UK release.

Just thought I'd check on IMDb for any new information and found that this was released to cinemas last week on the 20th. So it will be a couple of months, or more, before a Blu-ray release appears here in the UK.

I've been looking around and found When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie). It has already been released on Blu-ray in Japan with English subtitles but I could not find any further details for UK/US/ROW.

This would appear to be the final film from Studio Ghibli as things currently stand.  :(

I already bought most of his films as single releases throughout the past years. Just received Spirited Away recently, which was finally released, and still need to get at least Porco Rosso and one other one. Had I known this set was coming...

Yes it is a shame when you have invested into the early releases and are just waiting to catch with the current titles :(

Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka "The Boy and the Heron" has been completed and is now in cinemas, at least here in the UK.
