Horror/Halloween Marathon 2015

3 DAYS AND COUNTING!

Woohoo!... It's that time of the year again!

I don't know what to expect from this month. Not sure how much time I will be able to put into it. Don't know if I will be going back to work. Or if I will be having surgery on my knee. If I need the surgery then I should have lots of time in front of the TV. But there is just too many unknowns at this time. So I am not making any goals for myself. I am just going to watch as much horror and Halloween movies/episodes/shorts that I can till the end of the month.

I hope to see other people watching horror as well!

The Tomb of Ligeia
Year of Release: 1964
Directed By: Roger Corman
Starring: Vincent Price, Elizabeth Shepherd, John Westbrook, Derek Francis, Oliver Johnston
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Roger Corman and Vincent Price hook up for horror in Edgar Allan Poe's "most terrifying" (L.A. Herald Examiner) tale of passion, possession and PURR-fect evil! When a dead wife sinks her claws into immortality – and comes back as a ferocious feline – she leads her husband's (Price) new bride on a deadly game of cat and mouse. And when the fur starts flying, she soon learns that even in death...she can land on her feet!

My Thoughts:
Have I ever mentioned how much I love Vincent Price?  I do, I adore him.  He's one of my all-time favorites, and he certainly doesn't disappoint here.  All of the cast give very performances, but Price is always the absolute star.  It's old-fashioned Gothic horror, so there's very little blood and no gore. The film relies on atmosphere, and in that it's perfect, filled with unseen menace and creepy details.  This is one of my favorite of Price's films, and it's better with a re-watch.  Highly recommended!

Note on the blu-ray:  While I would have liked to see Shout! Factory clean up the PBS opening and closing pieces they included as extras (which look like they were ported over from VHS), the film itself is absolutely beautiful, with wonderful color and depth; well worth the upgrade from the old Midnite Movies release I had on DVD.

Bechdel Test: Fail

Overall: 4/5

My Thoughts:

I never even heard of this film before I got a copy. The overview on the back cover sounded interesting to me... and the trailer looked like fun so decided tp pop it in. I found it to be a pretty good film. I did enjoy it... but have seen better in it's genre. I liked gthe characters.... and enjoyed the storyline. I just wish they would have put that little extra something into it to make it a great movie. But it is a good watch for when you looking to waste a good 90 minutes.

(http://www.invelos.com/images/DVDLogo.png)Warner Home Video (United States)
Director:Tobe Hooper
Writing:Stephen King (1947) (Original Material By), Paul Monash (Screenwriter)
Length:183 min.
Video:Full Frame 1.33:1
Audio:English: Dolby Digital: Mono
Subtitles:English, French

Stars:
David Soul as Ben Mears
James Mason (1909) as Richard K. Straker
Lance Kerwin as Mark Petrie
Bonnie Bedelia as Susan Norton
Lew Ayres as Jason Berk

Plot:
With Salem’s Lot, a blood-curdling shocker based on the novel by Stephen King, director Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist) sends the time-honored vampire legend soaring on bat wings into the modern era.

Sinister events bring together a writer (David Soul) fascinated with an old hilltop house, a suave antiques dealer (James Mason) whose expertise goes beyond bric-a-brac and the dealer’s mysterious, pale-skinned "partner" (Reggie Nalder). The solid supporting cast of vampire victims and fighters includes Bonnie Bedelia, Lew Ayres, Elisha Cook, Ed Flanders, George Dzundza, Lance Kerwin, Geoffrey Lewis and Marie Windsor. It’s hard to keep the undead down. And so easy to be scared in Salem’s Lot.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

I have loved this one since the first time I saw it back in my teen years. Of course this is an adaptation from the book that Stephen King wrote. Who of course is my favorite horror writer. For a movie that is just over 30 years old... this movie has some decent scares in it. I personally haven't been scared from it since I was a kid... but I do remember it would scare my wife every time we watched it. A couple of my favorite spooky parts in this movie is ..

1. The kid vampire scratching at his friends window.... pleading with him to let him in.
2. The grave digger rocking in the rocking chair... looks over at you and hisses at you with his eyes glowing

I am really enjoying watching this one again. As for comparing this one to the remake... that is something I don't normally like to do... but sometimes it is just too hard not to. I really like both versions... like them both a lot! but I think I have to say I enjoy this one the most between the 2. I don't know why... but to me this one is a pure classic when it comes to vampire movies... it is one of the ones to beat!

Needless to say... this is one I would always highly recommend to any horror fan... and an absolute must see for any fan of vampire movies. Now... please lets see a dvd release of Return to Salem's Lot! It has been so long since I seen the sequel I can't remember anything other then it's existence.

Plot:
A group of fraternity pledges head for the seedy side of the city in search of strippers and discover a sinister spot called The After Dark Club. But when the bar's luscious dancers turn out to be bloodthirsty vampires led by the kinky Katrina (GRACE JONES), the evening takes on a freaky new twist. Can these guys survive a bizarre onslaught on vixens and vamps, or will the armies of the undead take the ultimate bite out of their night.

CHRIS MAKEPEACE (MEATBALLS), ROBERT RUSLER (WEIRD SCIENCE), GEDDE WATANABE (SIXTEEN CANDLES) and DEDEE PFEIFFER co-star in this outrageously sexy horror comedy that features wild makeup effects by Oscar®-winner GREG CANNOM (DRACULA, THE MASK).

Extras:

My Thoughts:

Vamp is not what I would call a great movie by any means... but it is definitely a lot of fun. It has a good mixture of comedy and horror. Though it is over the top at times. At first I wasn't sure what I thought of Grace Jones as the Vampire Katrina... but she did fine in this movie... and definitely brought something to the role. Over-all this is just a leave your brain at the door pop-corn flick type of movie. One that I just enjoy popping in once in a while.

My Thoughts:

OK.. what did I think of this one? It is a very silly comedy/horror. Not that that is a bad thing. I did find myself enjoying this one... though there wasn't anything too special about it. I found it to be a fun and entertaining film... but pretty much no more then average. Not one I can see watching often but sure I will watch again.

This one I enjoyed quite a bit. I will say it is a different type of horror movie and it is one that leaves lot to the imagination. Which means different people can take different thing from it. The Babadook
Year of Release: 2014
Directed By: Jennifer Kent
Starring: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Amelia (AFI Award winner Essie Davis, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, The Slap) is a single mother plagued by the violent death of her husband. My Thoughts:
Monsters are real.  But what is a monster?  Is the alien other the monster?  Or are the true monsters, the more menacing ones, lurking inside of us?  Is it more frightening when you don't know which it is?

Strong performances from the two leads, an interesting monster, good choices by the filmmakers in set design, editing and cinematography, escalating threat in the atmosphere, and a script that leaves you open to your own interpretation combine to make this an excellent little film.

There's not a lot of gore, and this is a film that makes you think, so take that into consideration, but I'd highly recommend it to the discerning fan.

The Comedy of Terrors
Year of Release: 1963
Directed By: Jacques Tourneur
Starring: Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, Joyce Jameson, Basil Rathbone, Rhubarb
Genre: Horror, Comedy

Overview:
Four Masters of the Macabre star in this sinister and screamingly funny scare-fest! Waldo Trumbull (Vincent Price) is running his father-in-law's (Boris Karloff) funeral home business...straight into the ground! Hounded by his landlord (Basil Rathbone), Trumbull and his assistant (Peter Lorre) devise a way to make death pay: by increasing their customer base through murder and burying the secrets to their success...body by body!

My Thoughts:
This was a lot of fun.  Sure, it's silly, and there's some pretty broad slapstick here, but the script is witty and you've got such stars as Price, Lorre, Karloff and Rathbone.  They really work well together, especially Price and Lorre playing off each other.  Don't take it seriously, and just sit back and laugh.  My only criticism is that I wish they'd let up a bit on the annoying opera singing gag.

My Thoughts:

Let me start this review by saying I probably wasn't in the right state of mind when watching this film so take this review with a grain of salt. Don't get me wrong... I did enjoy this movie. How can you not with such great classic genre stars. Some of the comedy in this one I found to be fun... some was a little out there. But the whole wife attempting to sing (off and on through-out the film) I found to just be terribly painful. Over-ll I found this one to be a fairly average film. It is worth the time put in to watch it.

Extras:

My Thoughts:

I have loved it since I first saw it when I was just a teen. I absolutely love the supped up wheel chair... The Silver Bullet! I really enjoyed the scene when he first got it... finding out just how fast it went. I believe Stephen King's take on the werewolf legend is just right on the spot. And I liked who the werewolf turned out to be. While it is not what I would call a gory movie... there is a scene or two that shows it's fair share of blood. There was nothing about this movie that was not just plain enjoyable. It is definitely one of my favorite werewolf movies. If by chance you never seen this film it is one I highly recommend!

My Thoughts:

This is the TV Movie that started the series. Going into this show I really didn't know what to expect. I mean I really like pretty much anything to do with Vampires... but at the same time it is a Disney Channel show. And they can be geared towards a much younger crowd.... if not the entire family. Though I must say that over-all I enjoyed the movie. Sure it is geared towards a younger crowd. Mainly pre-teens and lower teen years. But I was still able to enjoy it. And they did the vampire deaths pretty good.

A lonely and intense 14-year-old horror movie junkie, Zach (Chauncey Leopardi) is a good kid but a little confused as a result of his parents' recent break-up. Perhaps for this reason, he often tends to stretch the truth. His friends, J.T. Heffernan, a computer geek, and Gabrielle "Gabe" Lattanzi, a lovely, intelligent athlete, humor Zach, but know just how much to believe.

On the way home one weekend, Zach becomes lost on a deserted subway platform. When he stops for directions he is attacked, but recued in the nick of time by Valentine (Ron Silver), a self-styled vegetarian vampire from the turn of the century. Finding cold comfort in Valentine's assurance of protection, Zach runs for the first available train. Unfortunately he steps onto the Undead Express, which is full of vampires who are not, apparently, vegetarian...

My Thoughts:

This one is actually a TV Movie that originally aired on Showtime. From what I read it was actually supposed to be the first movie in a series (think Masters of Horror) called Shadow Zone. I remember seeing this movie on Showtime when it first aired. And I remembered always liking it...and I still enjoy every minute of it. I was kinda surprise that for a vampire movie you only get to see one single person get bit. But that is probably because this movie was made with younger teens and families in mind. It was kinda in the same vein (sorry for the bad pun!) as goosebumps... but maybe a little more spooky then that. This is one I recommend that you can watch with your entire family. Makes for a good holiday tradition to watch with the kids.

Die Farbe (The Color Out of Space)
Year of Release: 2010
Directed By: Huan Vu
Starring: Marco Leibnitz, Michael Kausch, Erik Rastetter, Ingo Heise
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Arkham, 1975: Jonathan Davis' father has disappeared. His tracks lead to Germany, to the Swabian-Franconian Forest where he was stationed after the Second World War. Jonathan sets out to find him and bring him home, but deep in the woods he discovers a dark mystery from the past. Based on H.P. Lovecraft's short novel "The Color Out of Space".

My Thoughts:
Perhaps the most horrifying thing is not what has happened, but what is yet to come.

Really well-done adaptation of Lovecraft's story.  I thought they made great choices for their low budget.  In filming in b&w they had a way to depict the alien otherness of the Colour, which is the real challenge of filming the story.  I can see the criticism for some viewers with the hot pink globules the filmmakers use to depict the Colour, but there is no way to accurately represent what Lovecraft says is indescribable, a color that does not exist on this Earth.  So I have no issues with the low-budget representation of the Colour.  All the performances were very strong, especially the two men playing Armin.  The score was also super effective in creating a tense, horrific atmosphere.

If you're looking for something fast paced, slick-looking and with lots of blood, look elsewhere.  This is a slow-moving, low budget, indie horror, with no gore.  Also skip if you don't like subtitles and can't speak German.  I thought this was really good though, and really enjoyed it.  Highly recommended for fans of Lovecraft's work.

My Thoughts:

Really loved the film. I think Chloë Grace Moretz did a fantastic job as Carrie. She could quite possibly replace Sissy Spacek as my favorite actress to portray Carrie! Though to be fair I haven't seen the other two versions in years. Julianne Moore was terrific as Carrie's mother Margaret White. They kept quite a lot of the scenes the same in this film... but they changed enough to keep the film interesting. Especially towards the end. And the changes they made I liked. I have to say... even if you are a fan of the original... give this one a chance. I highly recommend it.

The Haunted Palace
Year of Release: 1963
Directed By: Roger Corman
Starring: Vincent Price, Debra Paget, Lon Chaney Jr, Frank Maxwell
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Based on an Edgar Allan Poe poem, this Roger Corman chiller starring Vincent Price is "filled with terror and macabre events [and] guaranteed to bring shudders" (Boxoffice)! A perversely evil 18th-century warlock is burned at the stake. A century after the human barbecue, the warlock's great-great-grandson returns to the family castle where he falls under Gramps' ghost's spell...beginning the evil all over again.

My Thoughts:
Vincent Price meets H.P. Lovecraft.  Two great things that go great together!  What more could I ask for?  I adore Price, and Lovecraft has long been a favorite as well.  Sure, AIP markets this as a Poe picture, but it's actually based in Lovecraft's story with Poe's poem tacked on to market his name.  I suppose Poe was much more commercially known in 63 than Lovecraft.

This is a really good interpretation of Lovecraft's story.  The atmosphere is great.  Loads and loads of props to art director Daniel Haller, whom Corman says in an interview deliberately tried to make the exteriors seem claustrophobic and the interiors unnaturally spacious.  Haller's work really sets the tone of the film, and Lovecraft's atmosphere over gore aesthetic really shines.  Price, of course, is great, as is horror icon Lon Chaney Jr. in a supporting role.  The ambivalent ending only makes the film better, as you leave uncertain that evil has been destroyed.  Price plays it perfectly.

If you love Vincent Price like I do, this is a must see.  Highly recommended.  On a note to the blu-ray, this is as beautiful as the other two films I've watched from the Price sets, and the PBS intro/exit is in the best shape for this film thus far.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this show... it is a shame it only lasted the one season. I found it a bit odd that there is only four episodes per disc here... but they still used double sided discs with only 2 episodes per side.

Eater: I really liked this one a lot. Sure there was some problems with it.... some good sized plot holes and such. But it was entertaining... and kept my interest throughout the episode.

Spooked: This one is one of the good episodes... I enjoyed it quite a bit. Though I will say it was a little on the weird side. But it has a good ghost story atmosphere to it. Definitely worth watching.

Community: There is a couple names in this episode that I am familiar with. There is Shiri Appleby who was one of the main stars of the series Roswell. And then there is Brandon Routh who played Superman in Superman Returns. I have seen several stories about the evil gated communities. But they did it well... and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The Sacrifice: I am sure it is of no surprise that I enjoyed this episode a lot. Of course I like most shows about vampires. You never really get that good of a look at the creature in this episode... it is always either out of view or the views are so quick that you don't get a good look at him.

I been a fan of Vincent Price for years... and I must say this is one of his better films. A must see for any Vincent Price fan... hell a must see for any classic horror fan! While the entire cast was great (especially Lon Chaney, Jr. and Elisha Cook)... Vincent Price stole the show. He played 2 parts in this film... one good and one evil. And I can't see how anyone could have done it any better. He has this way about him that he don't even have to talk... the expression on his face alone he can instantly go from looking very kind and gentle to just plain evil and terrifying! The film has such wonderful atmosphere. The feel of these classic horror has something that the modern films just can't compete with any more.

The Uninvited
Year of Release: 1944
Directed By: Lewis Allen
Starring: Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, Donald Crisp, Alan Napier, Gail Russell
Genre: Suspense/Thriller, Horror

Overview:
A pair of siblings from London (Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey) purchase a surprisingly affordable, lonely cliff-top house in Cornwall, only to discover that it actually carries a ghostly price—and soon they're caught up in a bizarre romantic triangle from beyond the grave. Rich in atmosphere, The Uninvited, directed by Lewis Allen, was groundbreaking for the seriousness with which it treated the haunted-house genre, and it remains an elegant and eerie experience, featuring a classic score by Victor Young. A tragic family past, a mysteriously locked room, cold chills, bumps in the night—this gothic Hollywood classic has it all.

My Thoughts:
This is a sophisticated, romantic take on the haunted house story. It has a beautiful, mysterious setting at a mansion overlooking the Cornish coast and a wonderful score, including the now-classic "Stella By Starlight." Like a lot of old films a lot is left to the viewer's imagination. The ghostly activity, for instance, is very understated.

The performances are all good. Veterans Milland and Hussay anchor the film, but fragile Gail Russell is it's soul. She's perfectly cast as Stella Meredith, and her luminous beauty here makes knowing her real-life fate all the more tragic. There's some obvious age differences in the film's romances, but nothing that shouldn't be expected from films of this age.

Which brings this point: do you like classic Hollywood movies? Because that rather predicates whether you'll enjoy this one. Highly, highly recommended if you enjoy films of this age.

The St. Francisville Experiment
Year of Release: 2000
Directed By: Ted Nicolaou
Starring: Madison Charap, Ryan Larson, Paul James Palmer, Tim Baldini
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Four people – a psychic, a ghost-hunter, a filmmaker and a historian – all trained in the paranormal and equipped with cameras, agreed to spend the night in a house rumored to be haunted. This is their footage. This is their story.

My Thoughts:
This is my first foray into the "found footage" genre, and I'm feeling kinda ambivalent about it. There were some good things here, but there were an equal level of bad ones.

The good: This may be an ultra-low-budget film, but that look works it. It really does look like something that four inexperienced college students might make in a night at a haunted house. I like that they tied into real history with Mme. LeLaurie, and that the filmmakers tried to set it up beforehand as being something they were filming as a ghost-hunting/documentary project for college. It gives it some context for being "found footage."

The average: There's a lot of shaky-cam, but that really didn't bother me. The haunted house was inconsistently creepy, and some parts were simply silly.

The bad: While the actors did a good job portraying silly young college students, for the most part their characters were annoying. Especially Ryan. She was super, super annoying and I really wanted a ghost to get her. Madison was almost as bad, especially with her "white light of protection." She was simply screaming to me as being someone who read Buckland's Big Blue Book and saw The Craft and thought she knew everything she needed to about being Wiccan. Again, totally wanted a ghost to get her, just not as much as Ryan. I didn't like any of these people, but the actors came off as playing them very naturally.

It was hard to suspend disbelief and accept this as actually being found footage. I wasn't invested in the characters, or their story, and we didn't learn enough about the ghosts, who were definitely the most interesting part.

Daughters of Darkness
Year of Release: 1971
Directed By: Harry Kumel
Starring: John Karlen, Delphine Seyrig, Danielle Ouimet, Andrea Rau
Genre: Horror

Overview:
International screen icon Delphine Seyrig (of LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD fame) stars as Elizabeth Bathory, an ageless Countess with a beautiful young 'companion' (Goth goddess Andrea Rau) and a legendary legacy of perversion. But when the two women seduce a troubled newlywed couple (Canadian beauty Danielle Ouimet and John Karlen of DARK SHADOWS and CAGNEY & LACEY), they unleash a frenzy of sudden violence and depraved desire that shocked both art house audiences and grindhouse crowds worldwide.

Co-written and directed by Harry Kümel, DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS remains one of the most exquisitely mesmerizing adult horror films ever made. Blue Underground is proud to present the uncensored Director's Cut of this classic psychosexual shocker in luscious High Definition and packed with revealing Extras! Also included is THE BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE, a haunting shocker of reincarnation, lesbianism and violent murder from Vicente Aranda (LOVERS).

My Thoughts:
This was a beautiful, stylish film.  The shot of the Countess and Valerie standing at the top of the hill, where the Countess extends her cape and envelops Valerie is simply magnificent.  This is an exercise in artistry, in a Gothic aesthetic, a triumph of art direction.  It's also a very, very slow moving film.  There's very little vampire lore, very little action, very little blood.  There's also quite a bit of mystery, and some of it never explained.  A lot is left to the viewer to infer.

It reminded me a lot of A Virgin Among the Living Dead, which was equally beautiful, unexplained, and featured a lot of artistic nudity.  I'd definitely be willing to watch it again, but I can't give it an unqualified recommendation.  The characters aren't engaging, the plot is thin, and the pace is extremely slow.  It could be extremely dull to the wrong viewer.  I'd almost tell someone to watch Last Year at Marienbad first (which isn't a horror movie, of course), and then if they enjoyed that try this.  Definitely for the art house crowd.

As a fan of the "Lost Tape" genre I remembered really liking this one.,, but I haven't seen it in several years. And I think my tastes has changed some since then. I now find that I don't have the fondness for "Found Tape" films that I once had. The subject matter I still love. I always loved exploring old, abandoned supposedly haunted houses. The shaky can while didn't bother me much I still found irritating. And worst of all was how annoying pretty much all the characters were. So I am afraid I lost my taste for this type of film.

Now I am such a huge fan of hers I buy everything I can find with her in it. This movie has a lot of creative kills in it... but I think my favorite of them has to be the stomach pump... that is what I would have to call creative and sickening both at the same time. This one definitely gets recommendation!

My Thoughts:

This is a film I never seen before... but I definitely enjoyed every minute of it. It's Abbott and Costello... what is not to like about these films? Though it is slightly different then most of their other films that I have seen. in this one they went more with physical comedy then all the jokes. It was almost like I was watching Three Stooges instead of Abbott and Costello. Even with that said... this one is well worth the time put in to watch it.

Trick 'r Treat
Year of Release: 2008
Directed By: Michael Dougherty
Starring: Dylan Baker, Quinn Lord, Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Britt McKillip, Samm Todd
Genre: Horror

Overview:
A creepy, darkly comic celebration of the scariest night of the year from producer BRYAN SINGER (director of X-Men and Superman Returns) and writer-director MICHAEL DOUGHERTY (co-scripter of X2 and Superman Returns). Trick 'R Treat takes the Creepshow/Tales from the Crypt approach to nefarious new depths with four interwoven tales set on Halloween night: a high school principal (DYLAN BAKER) moonlights as a vicious serial killer; the quest of a young virgin (ANNA PAQUIN) for that special someone takes a gruesome turn; a group of teens carries out a cruel prank with disastrous consequences; and a cantankerous old man (BRIAN COX) battles a mischievous trick-or-treating demon.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this film.  I liked that you had the predicable tropes, and you thought you knew where they were going, and then it turned out that it wasn't exactly what you thought it was.  I thought they were a fresh enough take on these sorts of tales to be interesting.

While I wasn't particularly impressed with the acting, I didn't think anyone did a bad job either.  I really liked the way the film looked - the bright jack 'o lanterns, the rich colors of the Halloween festival, the eerie grayness of the quarry, the grim loneliness of the curmudgeon's house.  It had a really good look to it.

My favorite part of the film, though, is Sam.  I loved his character design, how he cropped up in each story, and how there was no explanation given for him.  He simply is, and as a viewer we are left to draw our own conclusions.  He was both the creepiest and best part of the film, IMO.

I'd recommend this.  It was a fun film.

Bechdel Test: Pass (barely)

Trick 'r Treat is somewhat of a cult favorite. And actually enough so, that a sequel has been made.

I quite enjoyed it myself. Maybe I should make it this year's Halloween viewing.

Count Dracula has until midnight to retrieve an ancient amulet that will give him final control over the delicate balance between good and evil in the world. To help him, the creepy count calls on some old friends: the weird Wolfman, grotesque Gill-Man, mildewed Mummy and freaky Frankenstein. As the ghoulish group gets closer to the amulet, it's up to THE MONSTER SQUAD, headquartered in the local tree house, to pool its questionable resources and stop the monster mayhem!

Extras:

My Thoughts:

The Monster Squad is an old favorite of mine. I have watched it countless times and found it to always be good for a few laughs. The lines "the Wolfman has nards!" and "Well there is Steve but he doesn't count!" gets me laughing every time I watch this movie. I like how they have all the classic monsters in this movie. They made the story fun and interesting at the same time. This movie would make a good introduction for kids that are curios about horror movies. If by chance you never seen this movie I would definitely recommend it to all.

My Thoughts:

I always loved anthology horrors. While it is technically an anthology horror... it isn't the way I know anthologies at least. Instead of having 3 or 4 separate short stories along with a wraparound storyline... this one is done more like a regular movie with all the stories intertwined with each other. I think this makes for a nice change of pace. I enjoyed all the stories in this one. I would have to say the girls finding dates for the party was probably my favorite of them. I feel comfortable recommending this one to any horror fan. Well worth the time put in to watch it.

House of the Long Shadows
Year of Release: 1983
Directed By: Pete Waller
Starring: Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, John Carradine, Desi Arnaz Jr.
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Newly Re-mastered in HD! Horror legends Vincent Price (The Oblong Box), Christopher Lee (The Crimson Cult), Peter Cushing (Madhouse) and John Carradine (The Sentinel) star as the screen's greatest gruesome foursome! When a young novelist, Kenneth Magee (Desi Arnaz, Jr., Billy Two Hats) spends a night at Baldpate Manor to win a bet that he can turn a best-selling novel in 24 hours, he gets more than he bargained for. The grizzly Grisbane clan arrives to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a ghoulish family secret. And their dinner party has murder on the menu. Lightning! Thunder! Torrential rain! Clattering shutters! Creaking doors! A locked attic! A sinister secret! Murder! All the ingredients of the classic "Old Dark House" tale come together in this top-notch horror film by cult film-maker Pete Walker (House of Whipcord). Co-starring Richard Todd (The Assassin) and Sheila Keith (Frightmare).

My Thoughts:
Price, Lee, Cushing, Carradine.  These are the reasons to watch this film.  They're all the elder statesmen of horror by the time this film gets made (Lee is the youngest at 61), and this is the only film that all four appear in together.  If you're a fan of any of these actors, and most especially if you're a fan of all of them, their performances make this film worth watching.  All of them are superb.  Arnaz Jr. is also competent enough in his role.

On the other hand, the neat little twist at the end is completely overshadowed by the lame second twist and the lamer third twist.  Though it's true to the novel that inspired it (Seven Keys to Baldpate), I really think the film would have been better leaving those off and ending the film before the second twist.  The repeat twists were very much a let down after the rest of the film.  I was also really annoyed by Julie Peasgood's character.  Every time she would scream and cower all I kept thinking was "what a useless person!"

Recommended if you're a fan of the four lead actors.  These men are always a treat to watch, and this film is no different.  Not necessarily for the more casual, or modern, horror fan - I'd recommend a number of their earlier films first, simply because of the let down in the ending here.

This Blu-ray features a newly remastered HD transfer supervised by cinematographer Dean Cundey, all-new Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio AND original mono soundtracks, an audio commentary reuniting director John Carpenter and star Jamie Lee Curtis, an hour-long Curtis featurette, and much more. The immortal original is back and now more terrifying than ever. This is the night Michael Myers comes home like you've never seen or heard it before!

Extras:

My Thoughts:

This is of course a classic horror that I must watch every year around this time. I normally like to save the Halloween movies for Halloween day... but now that I have the entire collection in this awesome blu-rsy set there is no way I would get them all in within the one day so decided to watch them through-out the month. This is of course the one that started it all... and finding out from one of the featurettes on the disc... a movie that was shot very quickly and cheaply. You would never know it watching the movie. I feel they all did an awesome job on this movie! While it would be hard for me to believe... if there is any horror fan out there that never seen this movie... I highly recommend checking it out ASAP!

This one I like... as it takes over where the first one left off. So it is definitely a good continuation into the series. But that being said... I liked the first one a little more. But this is more then worth the time put in to watch it. Definitely recommended for any horror fan.

Last Man Standing: Season 1 Episode 4: Last Halloween Standing
Mike feels let down when his daughters aren't into celebrating Halloween with him the way they used to. He decides that his two-year-old grandson, Boyd, can be his perfect trick or treat partner. But Kristin, Boyd's mother, adamantly tells him that she doesn't want her son to go out on Halloween.

My Thoughts:
A fun episode. It was good for a few laughs. Though I did find it to be very predictable. I had already figured out the reason she didn't want her son going out trick or treating way early into the episode. Plus I think Tim Allen did make better Halloween episodes for his earlier series Home Improvement. But over-all the episode was worth the time put in to watch it.

Last Man Standing: Season 3 Episode 5: Haunted House
Vanessa designs the haunted house for Halloween at Boyd's school and ends up scaring Boyd with her ideas, which Mike thinks is OK.

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds...and remembers.

My Thoughts:
I must say... I really had a good time watching this film. It has great atmosphere and all the visuals was done beautifully. The ghosts in this film was done a bit differently then I have ever seen before... at first I wasn't sure how I felt about it but by the end of the film I decided yes it was different but I liked it. Also without giving too much away I must say this one is more then just a ghost film. And it is one that easily keeps your attention through-out the entire story.  I feel comfortable recommending this one. I for one can't wait to add the blu-ray to my collection when it is released.

DREAMS IN THE WITCH-HOUSE – A stressed-out student discovers madness, murder and unholy mayhem in this shocker directed by Stuart Gordon (RE-ANIMATOR) and based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft.

Stars:
Norman Reedus as Kirby
Colin Foo as Fung
Udo Kier as Bellinger
Christopher Redman as Willowy Being
Christopher Gauthier as Timpson

Extras:

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this series a lot when it originally aired. And found it fun to revisit the series again. The episodes on this particular disc really aren't my favorites of the series but enjoyable all the same.

CIGARETTE BURNS: The first thing I notice on this episode is that it stars Normn Reedus of The Walking Dead fame. It is a very strong and interesting film. But at the same time it is definitely a bit on the weird side. That... of course... is not a bad thing. This episode is also pretty heavy on the gore. More so the second half of the episode... but it is definitely there.

DREAMS IN THE WITCH-HOUSE: This is another episode that I enjoyed quite a bit. The story kept my attention and I liked the characters... and I would be amiss if I didn't mention the rat in this episode... a rat with a human face... kinda a pet of the witch. Definitely a creepy idea... and the effects was done nicely. I actually got a kick out of him.

THE FAIR-HAIRED CHILD: This one is probably my favorite episode on this disc. Interesting story... good special effects... a nice amount of gore. Pretty much everything you can ask for in an episode. I also enjoyed the resolution at the end of this one. Even if it was somewhat predictable.

These episodes was really worth the time put in to watch them. While I am glad I got this first season on blu-ray I am sorry to say that most of the awesome extras from the DVD releases is sadly missing from the blu-rays. Pretty much only got the commentary tracks for each episode.

An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe
Year of Release: 1970
Directed By: Ken Johnson
Starring: Vincent Price
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Brace yourself for a fearsome fright fest...times four! Maestro of Mayhem Vincent Price narrates this quivering quartet of Edgar Allan Poe's most spine-tingling classics, including: "The Tell Tale Heart," "The Sphinx," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Pit and the Pendulum." Dripping with gruesome torture, live burials, monsters, madness and murder most foul, An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe will chill you to your very marrow!

My Thoughts:
This short anthology film is a treat for fans of Vincent Price.  He is the sole actor here, doing four of Poe's short stories as, basically, one-man stage shows.  It's very much a showcase of Price's talent, since each story allows him to develop a different character.

"The Tell-Tale Heart" and "A Cask of Amontillado" are both two of Poe's best known stories and the best of these four features.  One showcases Price as a raving madman, the other as cold and calculating a villain as you'll ever see.  "The Pit and the Pendulum" is good, but I don't find it as engaging as the other two, though Price plays desperate terror quite well.  I find "The Sphinx" the weakest of the lot, though still enjoyable.

This was made for television, and obviously very cheaply, but if you're a fan of Vincent Price it's well worth seeing.

Macabre masters Stephen King and George A. Romero conjure up five shocking yarns, each a virtuoso exercise in the ghouls-and-gags style of classic '50s horror comics. A scheming husband plants two lovers up to their necks in terror. A malevolent millionaire with an insect phobia becomes the prey of a cockroach army. Add the spirited performances of a fine cast (Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, E.G. Marshall and King himself) and the ghoulish makeup wizardry of Tom Savini. Let the Creepshow begin!

My Thoughts:

This is one of my favorite anthology movies. Sure... some of it is right silly but... even so for the most part all the segments are just fun to watch. I think my favorite segment was the one where "A scheming husband plants two lovers up to their necks in terror."... this was the one where Leslie Neilson buried the couple to their necks in the sand on the beach... waiting for the high tide to come. That one then followed closely by the "crated creature" Fluffy. My least favorite has to be the last segment... the one about the bugs. I mean it was ok... just nothing special. But of course I enjoyed all the segments. Normally it is the wrap around story that loses my attention. But this is one of the few that I actually enjoy. Though I must say... I am disappointed in the extras on the blu-ray... nothing other then the Theatrical Trailer.

Plot:
From Stephen King, the master of horror on page and screen, comes a new tale of relentless terror. Of a modern-day vampire who flies by night, and lands too close to home ... for comfort.

For Richard Dees (Miguel Ferrer) facts are always stranger than fiction. Every headline is a dead-line. Serial Killers, UFO abductions, tales of molestation, mayhem and murder. To some the tales are unbelievable -- but his faithful readers believe. And now there's a new story. The Night Flier. What is it that flies by night in a dark-winged Cessna, lands at secluded airports and brutally murders local residents? Dees begins to follow the unknown killer in a Cessna of his own, uncovering clues that reveal a pilot more terrifying than he could ever have imagined. A creature so untamed by human nature, that their final confrontation will leave no body unbloodied.

My Thoughts:

Stephen King's take on a vampire legend. Being a vampire movie alone gives it a good chance I will enjoy it... and I definitely did. But it is definitely not the best vampire movie I ever seen. Like It did seem a bit weird... the idea of a vampire flying around in an airplane everywhere he goes. There was a couple things did I liked about this movie though... they way they made Dwight Renfield (the vampire) look... as well as the effect the vampire's blood had when he effected Richard Dees with it. I really liked the use of Black and White in that scene. It really enhanced the spookiness of the scene.

Campfire Tales
Year of Release: 1996
Directed By: David Semel, Martin Kunert, Matt Cooper
Starring: Jay R. Ferguson, Christine Taylor, Kim Murphy, Christopher Kennedy Masterson
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Horror takes a detour deep into the woods in this terrifying cross between Scream and Tales From The Crypt, starring Christine Taylor (Dodgeball) and Ron Livingston (Office Space).

Returning home from a concert and driving recklessly, four teenagers crash their car on a deserted road. To ward off the cold, they build a fire and wait for help. But the hair-raising stories they tell around the fire put a deeper chill into the night. Each tale is more lurid, more horrifying, more shocking than anything they've heard before. Yet for these unlucky teens in the woods, the biggest shock is still to come...

My Thoughts:
This is a competent enough film, but suffers from being thoroughly predictable. After their car crashes, four teens are forced to spend time by the side of the road telling stories, all of which are well-known urban legends. "The Hook" is the most well-known, and a throwaway bonus tale. Nothing special here. "The Honeymoon" does well to leave you never actually seeing the creatures, and therefore letting the imagination run wild, and I liked that the girl fought back instead of just screaming and cowering. "People Can Lick Too" does well with creating tension but the villain doesn't act as someone like him would. It almost seems the filmmakers are afraid to go where the story should take them. I thought this was the weakest of the group. "The Locket" was my favorite. I liked the production design and atmosphere here, even if I knew how it would end. The wraparound story wasn't bad either, but you could easily see where it was headed. Twist ending aren't as fresh now as they might have been when this was released.

This is a low budget film, and there's some pretty clear technical errors (most glaringly to me, the red camera sights that were visible multiple times). The acting was competent, but nothing spectacular, though I did like how expressive Jacinda Barrett was in "The Locket," especially given I think she was cast because she was very pretty. Recommended if you like anthology horror, but don't expect any surprises.

Crimson Peak
Year of Release: 2015
Directed By: Guillermo del Toro
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Jim Beaver
Genre: Romance, Horror

Overview:
In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.

My Thoughts:
This is a wonderful gothic romance in a very old-school Hammer Films kind of way, with its horror flavored in Poe and Lovecraft.  It's a visually gorgeous film, with fabulous production design, Victorian styling, and a luscious use of color.  The reds are very rich, the blacks deep, the whites bright, the contrast high.  One might call the color almost oversaturated, as rich as it is.  If they recognize nothing else, the Academy ought to nominate for costume design.  I know they have a history of disdain for genre films, but at least the costumes ought to get a nod.

I enjoyed the story, but it is pretty typical tragic gothic romance, so if you know the tropes you won't be surprised.  I still liked the story, and I thought the creepy atmosphere the film developed was great.  Aside from the beautiful quality of the entire film, the other thing saving it is the superb performances.  Del Toro really brought forth great characters for these actors to work with, and they don't disappoint.  Especially Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain, who really carry the film.  Mia Wasikowska does well with her part, but she doesn't have the meat the other two do, and therefore doesn't stand out like they do.

I'd recommend this if you like Del Toro's oeuvre, or you enjoy Poe, Lovecraft, Anne Rice, or Hammer Films.  Don't go into this thinking it's a straight horror film, or traditional haunted house film - it's definitely not and if that's what you're looking for, you're going to be disappointed.  I loved this film.  I think it might be my favorite of everything I've watched this month.

The Beyond (...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà)
Year of Release: 1981
Directed By: Lucio Fulci
Starring: Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia Monreale
Genre: Horror

Overview:
Lucio Fulci's masterpiece of face-chewing spider action, milky-eyed psychics, face-melting embalming fluid and rotted flesh-crazed zombies returns in all its blood-splattered, surreal and grossly disturbing glory for a new generation of horror kids!

If your new business venture is sited on the cursed gateway to the hell dimension of The Beyond, then maybe it's time to move elsewhere but Liza (Catriona MacColl) is determined to make her New Orleans hotel work, until strange things start happening, people vanish and her waking thoughts are haunted by a ghostly blind woman who seems to hold the answers to the whole bizarre fever-dream. As reality breaks down and the plot explodes, Liza must journey far from everything she understands and descend in The Beyond...

The Beyond is Fulci's Zombie masterwork as he assaults his audience with shock after head-spinning shock, all the while leading up to one of horror cinemas most heart-stopping finales. The Beyond drives sane men mad and leads others to murder. Dare you step over to the other side?

My Thoughts:
This was a really bizarre movie.  The plot was super thin, and too much was never fully explained.  I can make some inferences, and that might be what Fulci was wanting the viewer to do, but I would have liked more meat in the story.  There was certainly time for it; the death scenes were drug out for the sake of the gore effects, especially the one where the spiders eat the guy's face.  I had read this film was gory, and that's definitely true.  I'm not necessarily against gore, but there was no need to linger on it the way this film does.  The characters also really annoyed me.  Eliza is another cowering, screaming, useless female character.  Then there's John, who is a doctor and therefore supposedly smart, yet can't seem to grasp that shooting the zombie in the head kills it and nothing else does.

At the same time, there are some gorgeously artistic shots in the film, especially the ending sequence, that are almost worth sitting through this film again.  Almost.

I suppose this isn't a film for me, and I doubt I'll watch any of Fulci's other films.  I don't mind surrealism, or a sparse plot, but I do mind when things are just dropped in and then never followed up on.  Especially when there was lots and lots of time for lingering over the blood, wounds, and eye-gouging.  I don't know who to recommend this to, but apparently it's considered a classic and lots of people do like it, so your millage might vary.
