Title: Addicted2DVD's November Alphabet Marathon
Post by: addicted2dvd on November 05, 2009, 03:26:14 AM
Addicted2DVD's November Alphabet Marathon
I wasn't going to at first since I haven't been able to watch movies as much as I would like lately... but decided to give this a try. I am doing my own thread because I didn't want the main list to end up on like page 5 of the main thread. Besides... I always liked having my own thread for the marathons for some reason anyway. Now I am not going to guarantee I will make it... but I will try to get something starting with every letter watched this month. And I will not necessarily watch them in alphabetical order... but will try to get something for every letter watched. Wish me luck that I do better then last month's marathon... and you can count on plenty of horror I am sure!

My Thoughts:
During Britt's party yesterday my sis-in-law and niece was telling me how I have to watch this movie next! That they loved it... and my niece even went as far to say she couldn't watch this movie by herself. After that build up maybe it is because my expectations were too high... I don't know. But it just didn't do it for me. I mean it wasn't a bad movie... it was an entertaining story. But it definitely wasn't anything special. And no where near scary. I know... I know... I shouldn't have went with the American remake... right?

But as I said. It isn't all bad. I definitely liked the storyline. And there were a couple decent scenes. I think it picked up quite a bit in the last half hour... but just not enough to make it more then just an average movie.

My Thoughts:
I know... There is many people that do not like this movie... but you know what I think?... I think they are all WRONG! I mean I respect their opinion... but this is one I really enjoyed. I first seen this movie when it was first released on DVD when my sis-in-law bought it and let me watch her copy. I was wanting it every since... but wanted the special 2 disc edition. Unfortunately that one never did come down in price so when I saw this one the other day I decided I will just get it. Sure... this movie wasn't perfect... but what it was... it was a whole lot of fun and it looked awesome! And I think that is what I liked the most about this movie. While I did like the story... the effects were just great and a whole lot of fun to watch. It is funny... when it comes to Nicholas Cage... I either like him in something or I just hate him. I don't know why. When I first heard he was doing this I thought well there goes any chance of this movie being any good. But I was really wrong... I found I liked him a lot in this role. I also liked Sam Elliot in his role.

My Thoughts:
This is another movie out of the 50 movie boxset Mortuary of Madness. And for me... this is another winner. It kinda reminds me of one of my favorites... Cube. Sure this movie is very low budget... but it don't hurt it much at all. I would say the acting is pretty good... though not great. If a lot of bad language bothers you for whatever reason this one may bug you a bit. As it seems like they throw in some bad language after every other word. The ending is a bit on the confusing side... but overall I enjoyed this one quite a bit. There is now a few movies in this set that I enjoyed... so I can definitely say I didn't waste $15 on this set!

My Thoughts:
My sister-in-law came over this evening wanting to watch a movie and we decided on this one. At least this time I have seen the original before the remake! But we all enjoyed this one. It was pretty cool to see Jensen Ackles in something other then Supernatural. You can tell this movie was originally made to be seen in 3-D... but since I can't see 3-D movies (I am blind in 1 eye) I bought the standard version. Though I would love to be able to see this one in 3-D... it definitely would have been cool... especially with some of the gore in this one.

Title: The 7th Victim
Year: 1943

Video: Full Frame 1.33:1
Audio: English: Dolby Digital Mono, Commentary: Dolby Digital Stereo
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Stars:
Tom Conway
Jean Brooks

Kim Hunter

Plot:
Six people have broken a clandestine group's code of silence. The same six have died as a result. Now a new member of the group has gone missing. Will she meet the same fate?

Chris Auty in Time Out Film Guide says: "The Seventh Victim is [Val Lewton's] masterpiece...a remarkably effective mix of menace and metaphysics — half noir, half Gothic." Kim Hunter debuts as a schoolgirl whose search for her vanished sister unearths an urban lair of devil worshippers. Mark Robson directs the first of his five Lewton films, bringing dark foreboding to moments that include a much noted pre-Psycho shower scene and a shocker of a subway encounter better experienced than read about here.

My Thoughts:
This movie came in the Val Lewton Horror Collection. Though not what you would consider a horror now a day. It felt more like a mystery/thriller to me. But it is definitely an enjoyable movie. Granted the movie is only 71min long... but it seemed to go by so fast because I was glued to the TV screen... engrossed in this movie. I have to wonder if this movie is where Hitchcock got his idea for the shower scene in Psycho... as there was a somewhat eerie (though only a stern warning no murder) shower scene in this movie. I really liked Kim Hunter in this movie. I will have to see what else I may have with her in my collection. This movie also has Hugh Beaumont of the classic sitcom Leave it to Beaver. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone that likes classic movies.

Well spotted, Pete! Lewton was way ahead of his time and a big influence on a lot of directors. Scorcese has done much to give him the recognition he deserves, both through the documentary in the set we have, and artistically, not least apparently in his next movie, Shutter Island. I have high hopes for that, despite the delays.

My Thoughts:
This was a blind buy I made last months in the hopes of watching it for my marathon. Unfortunately I never got the chance to watch it then. Let me tell you... if you like gore then this is a movie you will want to see. This movie has more then it's share of gore. The storyline could be a bit better.. but it is entertaining enough to keep your attention. The crazed doctor in this movie is played by Robert Patrick. Doing all kinds of experiments on helpless victims to try to save his wife. This one is worth checking out if the gore don't bother you.

My Thoughts:
I thought it was about time for another one out of that low budget 50 movie boxset Mortuary of Madness that I got for about $15. I already enjoyed enough of the few movies I watched so far to make the purchase worth the price... but am hoping there will be more in it to enjoy.

OK... I admit it. I got curios about this one from the title alone. Of course I went into this one expecting a big steaming pile of crap. Unfortunately that is exactly what I got this time. This movie... and I hate to even call it that... looked to be no more then a bunch of college buddies playing with an old VHS camcorder. The acting was pitiful... the effects was non-existent... and the video quality sucked. It looked like it came directly from an old VHS tape... with wavy lines and all.

At least I don't feel too cheated since this movie did come in such a large boxset and I already felt I got my money worth before I even got to this one. But if I bought this one by itself I would have been extremely disappointed as this one would rank right there with The Sorority and The Curse of Lizzie Borden. I could not in good faith even give this movie a half a star.

I figured what the heck... I will watch another movie from the Mortuary of Madness set. This time I didn't fair out that well. The acting was bad.... for an erotic movie they could have picked better looking women... And the story was in need of improvement. I mean the story did have potential... but unfortunately the writer just couldn't pull it off. I think with a better script, a better cast... and maybe a little more of a budget this movie could have been something. But as it is this one is no more then very mildly entertaining.

V: The Original Miniseries

Fifty spaceships, each three miles across, hover ominously above Earth's major cities. The Visitors that emerge are humanlike in appearance and extend the hand of friendship. Our planet's resources are just what these aliens need to survive. And for its future survival, unsuspecting humankind will need... a miracle!

Kenneth Johnson's science-fiction spectacular V mixes dynamic special effects with cliffhanger thrills. As fascist rule enslaves the globe, freedom fighters battle to save our species. Marc Singer [The Beastmaster] heads an epic-sized cast of human defenders and - behind sleek uniforms and benevolent behavior - reptilian invaders. For unparalleled extraterrestrial excitement, the invaders of V are unstoppable.

My Thoughts

I saw this back when it originally aired on tv.  I consider it a movie because of the length.  Since it had been so long since I watched this originally, I had forgotten a lot of things about the movie.  I think it has held up well overall though certain things do look dated.  The story is very interesting and entertaining.  Certain things may not be the most original since they are obviously influenced by the real events during WWII and what the Nazis did, but I think it works wonderfully well.  There really isn’t a lot of violence and not that much action, though there is some in a few scenes.  There is more focus on how the various characters deal with what is going on.  The characters are good, though Robin did irritate me a few times.  Diana is one of the few things I remembered and I still think she is a very effective villain.   I still really enjoyed this movie.

I did get a review posted on Epinions if anyone would like to take a look.

Pete you don't seem to follow my advice (even if we agree on the movies I've reviewed in my marathon). But seriously don't watch The Slasher, Brainiac and Kill Syndrome... they are bad and not just a little bit.

If you have some time to kill try to watch Alucard, I would like to see your comment about it since you are the vampire fan...

A Bothered Conscience is great also ;)

V: The Final Battle

Is there life out there? Finally we know. Because they are here. Alien spacecraft with humanlike passengers have come to Earth. They say they come in peace for food and water. The water they find in our reservoirs. The food they find walking about everywhere on two legs.

That saga that began with V now culminates in a struggle to save the world in V: The Final Battle. Sci-fi film stalwarts Marc Singer, Robert Englund and Michael Ironside head a large cast in this tense adventure that leaps from the stunning revelation of reptilian beings concealed by human masks to the birth of the first human/spaceling child to the harrowing countdown to nuclear doomsday. The future begins or ends here.

My Thoughts

I’m using this one for F.

This one is a good follow up to the original V.  This one picks up a little while after the end of the first one and continues the main story of the resistance fighting the Visitors.  It is 3 parts instead of 2, so a bit more happens.  There is more action since there are more fights throughout this one, and the attention to the characters suffers a bit.  The plot continues to be interesting and entertaining and it works well as a sequel to the first movie.  Many of the same characters return and there are a few new ones as well.  I did wonder where an older couple that had been fairly important in the first one was.  Diana continues to be a wonderful villain.  A bit more is shared about her, including how far she is willing to go to achieve what she wants.  Overall, this is another very entertaining movie.

I did get a review posted on Epinions.

My Thoughts:
This is a really good story that I enjoyed a lot. Though I must admit that I did have problems keeping up with the subtitles. People were just talking too fast and being a slow reader I had to keep pausing or rewinding through-out the whole movie. And that did take some of the enjoyment away for me. Which is the reason I mostly stick with movie made in English. But even so this is an enjoyable movie. I liked the whole idea of the orphanage for a setting and also liked the link to the Peter Pan story for the kids. Definitely worth checking out if you never did. And if you don't mind subtitles (if you don't speak Spanish).

My Thoughts:
This is one I bought blind when it was recommended to me by a few different people. After watching it I am glad I added it to my collection. The movie is a lot of fun. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Of course it is not a movie to be taken seriously. Just something fun to waste a couple hours with. If you try to over think this one... that will do nothing but take away from the enjoyment. Since I never seen the comics I couldn't tell you how well this movie follows them. Now I need to see if Hellboy II is still on On-Demand.

My Thoughts:
I thought it was about time for another one from the Val Lewton Horror Collection. This one I enjoyed a lot. Even if there was a couple of slow scenes that I caught myself starting to dose off on... but I think that is more to I didn't sleep well last night then anything about the movie. Like a lot of horror from this time it is more about what you do not see then what you do. There is some great suspenseful scenes... I especially enjoyed one scene at a hotel swimming pool. And I must mention the star of this movie... Someone named Simone Simon. This is the first time I ever seen anything with her in it. But she was absolutely adorable... and I loved her accent. Not sure if it was real... but I would guess so since she was born in France. If you never seen this classic horror... I highly recommend it.

Well done for sticking with The Orphanage, Pete! Really glad you enjoyed it. Similarly for The Cat People and you're definitely right about Simone Simon. She is in the sequel, but bear in mind what I have said before, it is not a traditional sequel. It isn't even a horror. Heck, it doesn't even make reference to Cat People (apart from what we know)! That said, considering the characters are from that film and remember what happened, it is a clever title. It's about a little girl and her imaginary (or not) friend. I loved it, but had to very quickly realise it was a fantasy, more akin to It's A Wonderful Life than anything scary.

I'm looking forward to what you think of it.   :D

Plot:
Is it man, beast or both behind a string of savage maulings and murders in The Leopard Man? An escaped leopard provides the catalyst for a foray in fear in which castanets clack wildly, a cemetery is a rendezvous for death and love, and a closed door heightens rather than hides the horror of a young girl's fate.

My Thoughts:
After enjoying both Cat People and Curse of the Cat People yesterday I decided to watch another one from The Val Lewton Horror Collection. So what do I decide on? How about more big cats and go with The Leopard Man? Of course this is different then Cat People... and even though I didn't like it quite as much... it is still a very good movie. I am glad I watched it. We get more chills in the dark and shadows. But this time we also actually get a little bit of blood. I especially liked the scene in the beginning of the movie when the teen girl was attacked and the blood comes seeping from under the door. Talk about a horrid feeling for any family. While there is a couple slow spots in the movie... everything happens pretty fast here. But I guess that is to be expected with such a short movie. Once again I must recommend a movie from this collection. If you are a classic horror fan... consider these movies!

My Thoughts:
Taking a little break from Val Lewton... I thought I would see if I could find another winner in the Mortuary of Madness set. Going by the plot on this one I went into this movie expecting something like The Blair Witch Project or better yet... St. Francisville Experiment. This fake horror documentary thing is pretty good entertainment. And it is good for a change of pace (the 3 mentioned here is all I have). This one is entertaining... over all I did enjoy it. But it definitely could have been better. Not all... but some scenes the acting needed help. Especially the scenes that take place in the police station.

My Thoughts:
I have watched this movie countless times... has always been one of my favorite of the Romero zombie movies. But this is the first time I watched this release of the movie after a good friend (Thanks Achim!) sent it to me. The gore in this one is really up there. Between the zombies tearing and and eating flesh and some of the scenes such as the doctor's experiments on the zombies and a dream sequence here and there the gore is plentiful and well done. I will say that there is some characters I dislike in this movie. But I think that is usually true of most movies. I would also say that some of the acting is a bit over the top.  But if you can get past that you are in for a gory walking dead treat. I didn't get the chance to check out the extras disc yet... but looking forward to checking it out soon.

Year: 2008
Director: Chris Carter
Rating: PG-13
Length: 108 Min.

Stars:
David Duchovny
Gillian Anderson
Amanda Peet
Billy Connolly
Xzibit

Plot:
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-team to unravel a bizarre case right out of The X-Files. In the blink of an eye, amidst a bone-chilling cold and an eerily deceptive calm, FBI agent Monica Bannan is mysteriously abducted. But this is no ordinary kidnapping. And not only does the search for the missing woman ignite sparks between partners Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny), it defies the boundaries of science, the supernatural and the terrifying spaces in between!

My Thoughts:
This one I recorded off of a premium channel on cable. Being a huge X-Files fan in the past I been wanting to see this one for a long time now. Since I do not have this one on DVD at this time... I didn't include any DVD specific info in this review. Though I do plan on getting the DVD eventually... as I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It really didn't have anything to do with the mythology from the series. But I am personally glad it didn't as I always liked the stand alone episodes better anyway.

This is one of the several Westerns that our friend Roger sent me. One that I have never seen before. While entertaining enough... it really didn't hold up to the epic Westerns that I got used to watching. To me this really was just an average movie. After a bit of talk we had about Superheroes yesterday I found myself in the mood to watch some. This is a good movie... I definitely enjoyed it. But much like the first time I watched it I just couldn't get over the whole Wonder Woman being able to fly thing. I understand that she could in the comics during the era this movie is supposed to take place in... so they wanted to be true to those comics. But I never read those comics... and I only knew the use of the Invisible Plane for her to get around in. I did like that this (like many of the new superhero toon movies) was not afraid to show a little blood. And I liked a lot of the cast choices. I definitely enjoyed watching this one again.

My Thoughts:
Still finding myself in the mood for Superhero stuff I decided on another animated movie. Basically after the last movie I felt like watching Wonder Woman as I know her best... meaning no flying! I enjoyed this movie just as much this time as I did the first time I watched it a few months ago. This movie is definitely heavier on the violence as well as some suggestive dialog. So it is not one for the kiddies... but I don't think it is to bad... I would say the teens on up would enjoy this movie. One thing I did find a little on the strange side is that you don't hear the name Wonder Woman till the end of the movie. But that is such a minor thing it doesn't matter in the least. The one problem I did have with this movie... and is true about all the animated super hero movies I have seen... is the short run time.

I actually wanted to say more about the style... but wasn't sure how to put my thoughts into words. I mean watching it... it felt different but I couldn't put my finger on it so left it vague.  :P

Do what I do. Waffle for six paragraphs and eventually you get to what you were trying to say!  :bag: ;)

Wonder Woman was never for the kid anyway... Even in her comic book format. A lot of sexual content in it (bondage, sadomasochism,...) sure it was implied but even for a kid it was easy to do one plus one equals two.

And yeah as a kid I liked the comic book, even if it was boring to read the drawing was great ;D

You've known some strange kids! ??? ;) A lot of comics are subversive, but that doesn't stop them being for kids. Wonder Woman was always a great character.

I love Wonder Woman.  I did think it was weird in the Justice League movie that she could fly without her plane.  The animated Wonder Woman movie is wonderful..the voice casting was perfect.

My Thoughts:
This is one of the movies I got off our good friend Eric. It is one I never seen before. Sally Field won three Best Actress Awards for her role in this movie (Academy Awards, Cannes & Golden Globe). This really isn't my normal type of movie... and I knew that going into it. But it is a type of movie I like to watch every once in a while. It is a good movie... better then average. But it is a little on the slow side in parts to me. But I am glad I have it in my collection. And I can see myself watching it again at some time.

My Thoughts:
I got this movie free when I joined Disney Movie Club. And I haven't watched it since I first got it about 4 or 5 years ago. Decided to watch this one today when I wanted to find one I could watch with Brittany. Ironically while not the best movie I ever seen... I did enjoy this movie. Unlike Brittany... she just couldn't get into it. But I found while this is a movie probably geared more towards teen girls (or at least that is what I thought)... it has some good funny moments for the entire family. I think both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews did a wonderful job. I also liked Hector Elizondo in his role as well. And what is it about the gym teacher? I swear she looks familiar... but damn if I can place her. And the credits/imdb were of no help to me either. As she really wasn't in that many things.

You are probably thinking Cordelia from Buffy and Angel. At least I always am reminded of Charisma Carpenter when I see this movie. But it isn't her.

My Thoughts:
This morning I felt like watching one of Stephen King's miniseries... but also knew I had to finish off this alphabet Marathon this weekend as well... so I picked this one. It is a pretty good miniseries... but far from my favorite. It is a decent story... but I have come to expect more from a Stephen King story. Maybe this is one of the cases where they didn't do too good of a job going from the book to the screen? I wouldn't know since I never read the book. I did get a kick out of seeing Marg Helgenberger in this... now that I have gotten to know her from the series C.S.I.

My Thoughts:
As much as I love vampire movies... this one is difficult for me to watch. This was originally a blind buy for me years ago... as it is a vampire movie I had to see it. And I haven't seen it since so I forgot how much I disliked this movie the first time around. The first problem for me was of all the music in this movie. But setting the music aside... it just isn't that great a story. There was some cool scenes with some decent effects. But that seems to be the most I can give this movie.

From what I remember it's a good adaptation of the book (I've not rewatched the serie since its original presentation on tv), but the original isn't really horror but science fiction. Maybe you were expecting horror since it's Stephen King.

My Thoughts:
I always found this to be a fun movie... it is just hilarious. So many parts I could talk about that stands out as a good laugh. I especially liked the part that Gene Hackman played the blind man and had the monster over lighting his finger on fire.  Even as much fun as it is there were a couple slow parts for me... and while it was still kinda funny... I didn't care for the musical number. I know... you are shocked that I wouldn't like that part!  I did like the choice that they made when they decided on making this movie in black and white.. I thought it was a nice touch since they are paying homage to the classic horror.

My Thoughts:
This 12 chapter movie serial is one of my favorites. I love all the swords play in this one. There is a couple things in this one so far that I don't particularly care for... but do understand them. The first being the whole legion wearing masks like Zorro and they have the Zorro "Z" on their capes. The second is how he acts when not Zorro... but of course he has to fool everyone.. but instead of acting lazy like most Zorror movies and such I have seen... he gives a real, shall we say effeminate vibe out. I also think I enjoy Zorro better when it is just him instead of the leader of a group. But over all... I really enjoyed this serial. I am glad I ended this marathon with a Zorro title. It was 3 and a half hours of time well spent.
