Oh I'll definitely be joining in. I've been crippled by the alphabet marathon, so didn't bother with Police Squad, but I'll make room for Spaced. There's always room for Spaced!

I'll join in too. I also didn't join Police Squad! because I needed to concentrate on the Alphabet and I had just watched it last month. But as I have sufficient mileage on the Alphabet Marathon by now I'll join in with Spaced. It's a great show and sure should grant a second viewing after about a year...

I have a few R2 DVD (3), but I don't like the hassle of it, or having to explain to my friends why they can't borrow it because it won't play on their player.

Finished watching the first episode. 8/10

Good opening episode, introducing all the main characters.

"So, do you like my comic?"
"Yeah, yeah. Oh, that reminds me I was talking to Marsha about the rubbish..."

Also liked the way the very first scene was cut.

In general, this TV series has great witty dialogues and excellent cutting, which those of you who don't know the series might have seen in "Shaun of the Dead" or "Hot Fuzz" (if you haven't seen either of those yet: What are you waiting for?). While it's not laugh out loud funny all the time, it's just great fun to see those two (Simon Pegg and Jessica Stephenson) interact.

8/10

This is the first time I'll watch this series since Shaun of the Dead was released. I saw it two years before that and it was the reason, I went to see Shaun of the Dead in the theater.
Even after the great Shaun of the Dead this series still holds up. It's even funnier than I remember it. Also great camera/editing work. And also great visual gags (like the Velma and Shaggy scene  ).

4/5

Ditto on everything already said. I think there is more invention in each episode than in an entire season of Friends. Edgar Wright really pushes the limit of what people expect from a British sitcom. Just little touches like the scene where Daisy wishes she was telepathic, "don't you Tim... Damn!" with the pan to Tim's dopey expression, and the different angles on one shot as they listen to Amber charging down the stairs.

Favourite line: "Mind you, I have no memory of Christmas 1994 either.", "Why's that?", "I don't remember..."  :hysterical:

I'm not ruining your average calculator am I, Tom? I don't like using a 10 point scale because I find I get too nitpicky. And whereas I'm happy to ladle out 5/5s, 10/10s never happen! :-[
Title: Re: [Rerun Marathon] Spaced
Post by: Tom on October 22, 2007, 09:14:38 PM
I will use the scale 10 for calculation. I adjusted yours to fit it. I found, that people who use scale 5 work with half points. Therefore multiplying it with 2 I get what I want.
However if someone decides to use half points with the scale 10, I will round up. I set as condition to use only whole numbers and this is what I set the database to which collects and calculates the ratings/averages.

Gatherings 5/5

A perfect example of a sitcom episode. Get the awkward intros out of the way, throw in the dodgy mates and just let them play off each other in a completely pointless episode! :P  Yet it still manages to start the ball rolling on the relationships and running jokes that will feed through both series.

Actually I'd rate this 5/5 just for introducing Mike so well "providing much needed security, Tim-Tim" and the first glimpse of his childhood trauma (complete with moustache!), but we also get the line: "smells like garlic/looks like a turd in a wig", plus more brilliant editing and spot on movie connections (2001, Evil Dead and Close Encounters). And don't forget the paperboy.

Gatherings 10/10

Great sitcom episode, really no plot to speak of but written hilariously funny and executed wonderfully.

Didn't notice the 2001 reference (:bag:) but found one Field of Dreams ("If we have it", the party, "they will come.").

The fridge was accused of becoming self-aware because Daisy couldn't get her half-a-Magnum out and it had HAL9000 on it's handle. The point of view was from the freezer, and in the back of the shot Tim whistles "Daisy, Daisy...". Even writing this down in a rather serious tone makes me laugh!  :hysterical:

Thanks Jon...

Actually, I just watched the commentaries for episodes 1 + 2 and they explained it :bag:. It was rather obvious, actually :slaphead: Also decided to watch the next episodes with the Homage-O-Meter on, to catch those things on first viewing (it's sometimes tough to get them with the commentary, if they are verbal references...).

Art: 8/10

Funny episode, with a few dull moments though. Vulva's art show was hilarious; of course, I hope never to be objected to anything like it in real life.

Brian: "Do you think I should lose the waist coat?"
Tim: "No, I think you should burn it. 'cause, you know, if you loose it you might find it again."

...and loved the beginning, where Tim gets startled by Daisy while playing a video game; I could relate to him being so involved in the game that the brain can't tell it's just a game anymore.

7/10

I'm a little biased against this one. I can't stand modern abstract art. I think it's such a complete load of bollocks, that when someone takes the mickey, it goes right over my head, because I think that's how it is anyway; artists playing a joke on their audience!

There was a recent installation in London. A room with four large ceiling lights that were being switched off and on. That was it.

To be fair, later in the series there is another joke I love with Brian set around an installation, but it's because it goes very wrong and he's congratulated for it. It demonstrates the stupidity of the art world.

Anyway, there was plenty of good stuff. The afore-mentioned zombie sequences were genius, plus Mike running round a tree. The editing is still the high point for me, like when Tim says he isn't going to the show, walks out of shot as Brian confirms to Daisy that there will be free booze and Tim is back in shot, dressed to go out and opening the door!

By the way, non-UK watchers, when Daisy becomes paranoid, it switches to the guy with the tape recorder? He isn't a generic spy. He had a notice in front of him that read "D.S.S." which is "Department of Social Security" who handle the benefits system. Daisy will be claiming unemployment benefit and the joke crops up several times. Our local councils epitomise the saying "getting blood out of a stone". There are a huge amount of fraudulent claims, but they treat everyone who claims benefits like a potential criminal. So Daisy's paranoia is typical of someone like her. Look out for the first episode of series 2 when she gets back from holiday...

Far too many favourite bits to list, but I loved the Star Wars getting to be a real problem, Brian losing/getting/losing his mojo, Twist sex noises are hilarious and finally, dealing with the benefits office. Mettle 9/10

I was really torn about that rating. While the episode was lacking on stand-out catchphrases a bit it had great film references (RoboCop, Grease and of course One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest taking over half the episode.

Help: 10/10

Had a lot of fun with this episode. Three separate story lines (picture retrieval from Darkstar comics, competitive jogging and Brian's lunch with his mom) which were intercut quite nicely. Tyres was geat fun yet again.

Twist: Oh, and have sex! That's all you want to do, I'm not just here for one thing! Why can't you see me as a whole?
Brian: I do.
Twist: A whole Brian, with a 'w'!

BTW, looking up the above quote at IMDb (too lazy to listen again on the DVD) I noticed there is an entry "Spaced" 2008 (TV) as well. Some further investigation revealed at "Spaced Out" (http://www.spaced-out.org.uk/), that there may be an Americanized version coming up at Fox next year. The quoted Variety article is here (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117974978.html?categoryid=1236&cs=1&p=0).

Another class episode. The film references come thick and fast. I think both Cuckoo's Nest and Sixth Sense are amongst their best; especially Billy in the first (he parodied the original character perfectly when he gets dragged off) and did you spot Olivia Williams as the cyclist? "Alright!"

Your comment about Pelican crossings made me laugh, Tom! I wondered what you meant by "traffic light for the blind". I just take them so much for granted! ;D

Learned something new here: Didn't know you call them Pelican crossings :)
We also have pedestrian traffic lights with acoustic signal for the blind here in Germany.

I think the UK were first to have Zebra crossings and although they are known all over the world, we continued to use animal names for other types: Zebra, Pelican and now Puffin apparently! Even a Pegasus (for horse riders) but I haven't seen one myself. There was even one called a Panda years ago...

GONE 10/10

A perfect Spaced episode. Nothing forced, and just playing off the sit in their sitcom, with at least two sequences only possible in Spaced: fake gunfights and the comic strip representing what Tim's idea of a night out should be. I love their film parodies, but here they prove they have so much invention even when they haven't got something to hold on to.

EDIT: Oh yeah. Just how fit is Sophie from Dark Star? I'd go with... very.

I loved the slo-mo pseudo gunfights.

Gone: 10/10

The "air gun fights" are a hilarious idea. First the way Brian lets himself get into it and then later the surprise how the hold up by the Red Hand Gang is resolved... (great also how they started the show, then flash back to axplain how Tim and Daisy got into that mess). Superb how it's actually Daisy having the idea to have the shoot out with the gang!

...and they top it off by having a great chicken stew

This is one of my favorite episodes.

I loved this episode, even though (or especially :hmmmm:) it was quite serious in parts it had lots of little funny one-liners. ...and a cliffhanger ending :o

A good last episode for this series. Sadly a third series will never materialize. Damn these short British TV series
But it makes it easier to revisit them regularly.
And we have Shaun and Hot Fuzz now instead which are nice consolations

The last episode is a little short on comedy as it has to wrap up the situation with Marsha and throws in a few other seriouis moments (e.g. Colin leaves, for a while anyway). It is, however, a good end to the series and the final montage leaves us with a warm feeling that all is well.

8/10 (for lack of comedy in a comedy series, sorry)

I haven't watched this again yet for the marathon, but I must call you out on that statement "for lack of comedy in a comedy series". That's the typical British sitcom at its finest. I'm not saying the Spaced finale was perfect, but the balance of pathos against comedy is what makes old school Brit sitcoms the best in the world. Only Fools and Horses had a decent pinch of melancholy, One Foot in the Grave sometimes forgot to be funny altogether, Vicar of Dibley did a fantastic episode for Comic Relief, and then there's The Office which sat itself right on the fence and refused to budge. Gervais did it again in Extras; the ending is an emotional rollercoaster (and brilliant by the way). Finally, I must mention Blackadder. Never a favourite of mine, but the ending was just stunning.

So there.  :tease:

I finally finished!

Dissolution 8/10
This had loads of great horror/thriller moments. So cleverly used to build a feeling of doom. Really liked the twist that Marsha never actually specified Professional Couple, and a nice cameo from Ricky Gervais. Sad that that brilliant cake got destroyed though. Ends with one of the best Star Wars references. And, oh my, isn't Sophie fit?

Leaves 9/10
Great ending. Started well with a spot on Royle Family tribute (a great sitcom in itself, though very "real"), then the last half felt really slick. Like all the good work and preparation had paid off as they closed off all the little plot lines. I think Mike finding out about his rabbit is my favourite bit, mind you Tim saying he's better at communication and Mike/Brian just mumbling was good too.

I hope they find a way to do some sort of follow up one day. The team have successfully done a horror movie (Shaun), a buddy cop movie (Hot Fuzz), maybe it's time to tackle the romantic comedy and bring back Tim and Daisy?

A Brit sitcom set in a bookshop with Dylan Moran as the owner. He hates customers and frequently demands they leave him alone! Moran has to be the best at making misery so funny; his stand up routine is similar. Bill Bailey (comic shop owner in Spaced) comes to work for him and so begin a series of at times very bizarre stories. Simon Pegg crops up at one point.

It isn't perfect, but when it hits the mark it's better than anything.

Lucky Yank bastards! :tease: I've just read the Empire review of the region 1 version and it's a lot more than a quote from Tarantino; he does a couple of commentaries, along with Kevin Smith, Diablo Cody and Matt Stone amongst others. Apparently QT is on the QT at first, but livens up during the Pulp Fiction parody...
