The effects are obviously not up to the standard of a multi-million dollar film and there are very few 'scary' moments, but the action is swift, the gore is pretty uncomfortable at times to watch, and all in all I think someone more interested in this genre will really enjoy
:D
Jimmy seems to have temporarily mislaid my Dead Set review (it was part of the Horror Marathon) :tease:This is a tv review I only place movie in my part of the review archive ;)
I think that Karsten is the one who update the tv archive...Actually I have to confess that I only listed entire topics marathon-ing one or more series, not single postings in several threads. :-\
The Office - Season 4This is a serie that I think of trying soon, mostly because of Jenna Fischer that I have really appreciated in Lollilove that I've reviewed last year. The first season isn't really costly so I will probably get it in a couple of months.

Righteous Kill
(http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1538/51w1t8y2blsl500aa240pq5.jpg)
Turk and Rooster, two aging NYPD detectives who have been longtime partners are faced with a serial killer who is murdering sociopathic criminals. They both have personal issues, and when they start working with a younger team, Perez and Riley, tensions between the pairs of partners is inevitable, especially since Turk is now living with Perez's ex-girlfriend, also a homicide detective.
All the ingredients of a great film? - DeNiro & Pacino playing a couple of veteran cops in a NY thriller, can't go wrong can it? Unfortunately it can, and it did.
Very weak script, two very tired performances from great actors, a plot twist telegraphed so early on in the film it wasn't even worth guessing at, and a storyline too overly cooked for the worst 70's cop shows.
This is not the worst movie ever, but with 2 heavyweights appearing to just be there for their paychecks, it was a major disappointment.

Where the truth lies

Acclaimed director Atom Egoyan adapts Rupert Holmes's novel about a celebrity journalist who attempts to reveal some old Hollywood skeletons.
Average fare and probably a film that will be remade in 20 years time. The storyline is OK but for some reason the characters aren't convincing and the 'mystery' is fairly transparent, or so I thought, from early in the movie. Lack of depth or atmosphere and the 2 leads just don't quite work, although it is interesting to see Firth playing a more nasty role.
As a bargain bin purchase this is ok, but don't bust your nuts to get it.
:-\
I saw this..rented it a few years ago. It had a different cover them. Anyway, I didn't care for it at all. It just wasn't interesting for me and I didn't care how everything worked out.
This is the 2nd time I've tried to enjoy this movie, but I'm afraid it does nothing for me and find it dull. It is childish and stupid, perhaps the only thing that got me through it was star spotting the celebrities. Ben Stiller is totally overated and is fortunate to be acting at a period when there is few genuinely funny competition. The best part of the film was a good soundtrack, which bumps up my marks.
This has received great reviews, perhaps I didn't get it, but I will never understand the attention this movie has had.
The overrated one you're looking for is Adam Sandler... :DJust when I was about to post a review of an Adam Sandler movie ;) . He may not be a great actor, but I enjoy some of his movies.
What started as an original, quirky and interesting movie with plenty of promise sadly tailed off into a twee, dull and self-absorbed trial. It drags on slower than the train from the title, and you find your hand twitching over the fast forward button.
Visually it is a treat, very colourful, rich characters, the music excellent, original and fairly earnest. However this cannot compensate for the lack of any punch in a script that does not spark, I can imagine this is a great book, and should probably have stayed as just that.
Sadly, I am sure there will be pretentious fans of this film who will claim I didn't get it, but when I pop a dvd in I want to be entertained, moved or challenged. This film did not take any of these boxes for me.
...this is a movie to avoid unless you enjoy watching wood warp

What a pathetic, juvenile load of shit. What was you expecting, it's an Adam Sandler's movie
Try "50 First Dates", "Spanglish", "Click". Especially the latter ones are less slapstick and have a more serious side to them. What a pathetic, juvenile load of shit. What was you expecting, it's an Adam Sandler's movie
Except for The Wedding Singer, I've never find anything worthy of my time in any film he had appear in his "career". But, I'm certain that I like The Wedding Singer more for nostalgic reasons than anything else (even if the film is full of errors).

I cannot undersand how this has been heralded as the best boxing movie of all time, in my opinion the boxing was purely a backdrop to a deeper exploration of one mans psyche. The fights just appeared to be a release for all the obvious pent-up anger, frustration and jealousy that bubbled in La Motta, and ruined his relationships.
The direction is amazing, just simple shots somehow seem more important and penetrating, claustraphobic in the dometic shots, artistic in the ring. De Niro & Pesci give wonderful convincing acting masterclasses. The unflinching production of a fairly unpleasant personality, makes you realise how volatile and dangerous La Motta would have been roaming the streets, you certainly don't warm to him through the film.
I think everyone should watch this film, to perhaps see de Niro at his best, and Scorsese matching him blow for blow.
;D

I think you answer your own question there. La Motta was a fascinating character who kind of never stopped boxing. Most boxing films are just fights joined together by forced drama, but here, he never stops punching, in or out of the ring. He was consumed by his own career.
Thats true, even towards the end as the fat loser trawling seedy bars trying to do stand-up comedy (I wonder how they made DeNiro look so fat?)
An American goes to Europe to put weight ON? ???While Europe has the better food (I dare say), if you combine it in all the wrong ways you can easily put on the pounds quickly; and probably in a better way than eating loads of greasy burgers. Sure he could have eaten the same foods in the US, but why do it there is you can have a nice trip to europe at the same time :)
:redcard: Where's the To Kill a Mocking Bird review?
I started to watch the dvd but had to switch films when my partner arrived and said she didn't want to watch some old crap :bag:Excused! (just wanted to make sure you don't forget)
Maybe the director thought this was a game and not the movie, made with easy mode chosen.
Maybe the director thought this was a game and not the movie, made with easy mode chosen.
I reckon you've hit the nail on the head. I have no wish to see this film as I haven't seen one decent comment (poor old Whalberg, after this and The Happening), but I bet half the problem with this and other game adaptations is that the director has not played the game, or even any other game since 1987. So he has no idea how sophisticated they actually can be now and thinks he's making it for action junkies who don't give a shit about even the tiniest hint of realism.
How did this beat High Noon to the best picture?
Clearly made for the big screen, the cast of thousands and multiple scenes within one would no doubt have been better to watch in the cinema. It does come across rather lack-lustre and dated, and I was underwhelmed by Heston as the lead.
By far the best part of the film was watching the real circus performers, both human and animals, totally spectacular performances and something that must have been amazing to see live, in truth I would have preferred watching them without the piss poor editing and wet dialogue of the movie itself.
The worst part besides the corny acting, the appalling 'train crash' scene, Hornby must have been rubbing his hands together!
Seen once, you'd have to be a clown to see it twice
"John Wayne strongly despised the film because he felt it was an allegory for blacklisting, which he and his good friends Ward Bond and Howard Hawks actively supported. In his Playboy interview from May 1971, Wayne stated he considered High Noon "the most un-American thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life"[4] and went on to say he would never regret having helped blacklist liberal screenwriter Carl Foreman from Hollywood. He later teamed up with director Howard Hawks to make Rio Bravo as a conservative response. Ironically, Cooper himself had conservative political views, and was a "friendly witness" to the HUAC several years earlier, although he did not "name names" and later strongly opposed blacklisting,[5] and Wayne also accepted Cooper's Academy Award for the role as Cooper was unable to attend the presentation.
The Left appreciated the film for what they believed was an allegory of people (Hollywood people, particular) that were afraid to stand up to HUAC. However, the film would eventually gain the respect of people with conservative/anti-communist views. Ronald Reagan, a conservative and fervent anti-communist, would appreciate the film because the main character had a strong dedication to duty, law, and the well being of the town, despite their refusal to help."
Boooo! :( Where did I leave my squeaky nose and size 19 shoes? It's a creaky old melodrama, but harmless. I've seen it loads of times and it's a decent film. James Stewart makes it for me.
Distant looks, pouting, meaningful glances, crap backgrounds, orchestral crescendos, stiff acting, sharp intakes of breath etc etc. There is a lot wrong with this film 70 years on, it is almost at times the perfect example of why so many people today would not sit through an old movie.
However...(and before Jon jumps all over me) scratch underneath and persevere, and you are treated to an atmospheric drama with a touch of romance, with enough suspense and plot twists to keep you guessing. Hitchcock creates a melancholy, perhaps dark?, mood for this classic, and Judith Anderson is memorably outstanding as the spooky (lesbian??) Mrs. Danvers. Joan Fontaine is convincing as mousy Mrs De Winter part 2, but I was never sure if Olivier was the right choice as lead actor?
It is tame by todays standards, at times the acting is comical, Hitchcock made better films that didn't win an Academy Award for best picture, but once you overcome the negatives all the positives filter through to a film that is definately worth watching and I whole-heartedly recommend it.
:D
Jump all over you? Never! :P That was a very good review. It is old and creaky, which Hitchcock always avoided, but here he was trapped by the same producer of Gone With the Wind. On the Criterion DVD, there is an excerpt from the famous interviews with Truffaut. He asks Hitch what he thinks of Rebecca... "Well it's not a Hitchcock film, is it?", he answered

I was conscious that you gave this top marks 5/5, as you have most of the Academy Award winners. Maybe my marks have reflected more my personal leanings towards more modern films as a choice, as I struggle to get overly engrossed in many films over 30 years old. I appreciate them contextually more than enjoy them. :hmmmm:
Or it may be that you are much older than I am and saw some of these films at your local picturehouse after the war? :P

The Apartment
(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3849/5951mediumri6.jpg)
Winner of five 1960 Academy Awards®* including Best Picture, The Apartment is legendary writer/director Billy Wilder at his scathing, satirical best, and one of the "finest comedies Hollywood has turned out" (Newsweek).
C.C. "Bud" Baxter (Jack Lemmon) knows the way to success in business… it's through the door of his apartment! By providing a perfect hideaway for philandering bosses, the ambitious young employee reaps a series of undeserved promotions. But when Bud lends the key to big boss J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), he not only advances his career, but his own love life as well. For Sheldrake's mistress is the lovely Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), elevator girl and angel of Bud's dreams. Convinced that he is the only man for Fran, Bud must make the most important executive decision of his career: lose the girl… or his job.
Wonderful script and totally polished performances by Jack Lemmon and beautiful Shirley MaClaine, this satire is absolutely timeless and the plot intricate and complex, full of coincidences and mishaps.
Punchy and brutally honest, the infidelity is rife amongst the cynical money-driven office workers, and there is sadness in this unsavoury merry-go-round. But tender and tough Fran and wimpy Bud dream of something better, and whilst the film depicts a dark subject the movie always feels bright and breezy.
For anyone that has ever loved somone who loves someone else, it is easy to relate to. For anyone else it is a Hollywood masterpiece, and perfect examples of Wilders directing skills and an ideal platform for showcasing Lemmons acting strengths and mannerisms.

Transporter 3
(http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3254/108336medium.jpg)
The ultimate bag-man is back in Transporter 3! Jason Statham resumes his role as Frank Martin and he's still delivering for criminal masterminds. However, this time he's electronically tagged and his life depends on getting the package there on time!
This is a very disappointing film, it has fallen into the trap of churning out rubbish purely for commercial income and hoping the adrenaline will mask it's deficiencies. There are loads of amazing stunts and a multitude of action fighting scenes, but there is no depth, no storyline, suspense, plot, intrigue or acting. Co-star Natalya Rudakova is perhaps the most annoying person in the world, I had hoped she would be killed a lot sooner.
Totally unrealistic and implausible, give this a wide curve.
hmmm... what do you think of 1 & 2 though?
Looking forward to your review of Mirrors as I didn't like the original and wonder if they've given the similar story a bit of oomph!

He's a movie star, not an actor, and in the right roles, he's perfect. In what? The last time he was perfect was a long time ago
I like him in Bill & Ted, Speed, Matrix and Constantine
Possibly tongue in cheek, some fantastic effects and stunts although oddly timed, this film is so bad I wondered if it was intentionally so? The dubbing was hilarious, clearly English speakers putting on Chinese accents, and the film seemed to miss huge chunks of storyline.´

I understand the intgernational version had been recut, unknown to me is to what extent. However, the original Hong Kong version (which is what I own) might therefore make more sense to you.
Have you watched the film? Is it meant to be intentionally bad??Well, it's aware that it's an over the top comedy and not to be taken seriously. If you go in expecting the Citizen Kane of comedies then it will fail.

The Wrestler
(http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6610/117197medium.jpg)
Mickey Rourke gives the performance of a lifetime as pro wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a former superstar now paying the price for twenty years of grueling punishment in and out of the ring. But he's about to risk everything to prove he has one more match left in him: a re-staging of his famous Madison Square Garden bout against "The Ayatollah." Darren Aronofsky directs a powerful cast in this action-packed saga of guts, glory and gritty determination that is "as irresistible as a headlock" (New York Post).
Gritty, enlightening view of the wrestling world away from the glitzy shows you see on television.
Rourke's performance is absolutely incredible, for a written off actor to deliver such an amazing portrayal is astonishing, and his character is so brilliantly portrayed you find it painful to witness his fall from grace and his day to day survival. Tomei also puts in a first class (and sexy) performance as a tired and bitter stripper, her downfall mirroring the Rams.
With a superb soundtrack, moving storyline, frightening insight into the wrestling world and it's drug enhanced performers, dark humour and in-depth character portrayals, this is an absolute must see for everyone. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

September Dawn
(http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/3610/101706medium.jpg)
Academy Award® winner Jon Voight (Best Actor, 'Coming Home', 1978), Terence Stamp and Trent Ford star in this film based on the true story of the Mountain meadows Massacre -- the brutal murder of 120 men, women and children on September 11, 1857, as their wagon train passed through Utah on its way to California. The question of whether the attack was carried out by local Paiute Indians or by a renegade sect of the Mormon church remains unresolved to this day.
Set against the breathtaking beauty of the Utah mountains, 'September Dawn' explores what might have happened when the ill-fated settlers stopped near Cedar City to rest before completing the last leg of their journey. Local Mormon Bishop Jacob Samuelson (Vought) is suspicious of the group, so he dispatches his eldest son Jonathan (Ford) to spy on them. Jonathan soon falls in love with an angelic member of the wagon train, the minister's daughter Emily (Tamara Hope), and is horrified when he discovers that his father thinks the settlers are enemies of the church and is planning an attack on them.
While Jonathan makes plans to escape with Emily, his father sets in motion a chain of events, fueled by revenge and fanaticism, which culminates in a violent and tragic ambush.
The WrestlerGlad to read another good review for this film. I was ready to bought it at the release day, but the studio had decided to laugh of us here (more than 20$ for a DVD with absolutly no extra). I just wait for a dvd deserving of the name to add it to my collection.
I'm really looking forward to catching up with this one. Yet to hear a bad word, plus Marisa Tomei is probably my favourite actress and never gets enough work. She's adorable and talented.
September Dawn
Rich I'm looking forward to your comments on this movie, I really loved it.
Pushing TinI remember catching some of this on TV one day (quite a while ago). The scene I still remember the most to this day is the one on the runway (you'll know when you see it). Also, the climax at the end is quite exciting. (I hope this is not already considered spoilerific...) Depending your review I may want to look this up on DVD...

The Coen brothers' irreverent cult hit comes to DVD as a Collector's Edition, with all-new bonus material. The hilariously twisted comedy-thriller stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore. Join the "Dude" and his bowling buddies on their journey that blends unforgettable characters, kidnapping, a case of mistaken identity and White Russians. Enter the visually unique and entertaining world from the creative minds of the Coen brothers and remember: the Dude abides.
DUDE!! whats all the hype over this film??
Inconsistent and over-rated, this is an ok 90's comedy with an odd script and inspired acting. I was really looking forward to this film because of all the rave reviews, and thus just felt disappointment when I finally viewed it. I can appreciate why some people could like this, with the Coen brothers typical collection of zany characters, and good performances particularly from Bridges and Buscemi. Goodmans character was irritating and I was waiting patiently for him to get killed at some point early in the film.
Average comedy, worth watching once.

Empire of the Sun
(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3600/54436medium.jpg)
Steven Spielberg's 'Empire Of The Sun', based on the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, stars Christian Bale as Jim Graham, a British schoolboy separated from his upper-class colonial parents when the Japanese sweep into Shanghai during World War II. Temporarily orphaned, Jim attaches himself to Basie (John Malkovich), a fast-talking American opportunist determined make a buck off the spoils of war. Later, when the two are interned in a prison camp, Jim's boyish fantasies are fueled by the grace and daring of the Japanese fighter pilots whom he comes to idolise despite their enemy status. Spielberg's visually spectacular wartime epic is a testimony to the human will to survive and a child's ability to find wonder even in the midst of horror. Thirteen-year-old Welsh actor Christian Bale is brillant as Jim in his feature film debut. Spielberg himself identified more with Jim, a boy who is obsessed with flying and who experiences the death of his innocence, than with E.T.'s Elliott. After a year of negotiations with the Chinese, Spielberg and his crew were allowed to film in Shanghai, which was virtually unchanged since World War II.
A must watch epic, with superb characterisation, an emotional storyline, and a young Christian Bale showing immense early talent.
Glimpse into the world of yesteryear, and uniquely view a war through a childs eyes.
With Stoppards magnificent screenplay Spielberg crafted a masterpiece, and at todays low dvd prices which you can pick this up for there is no excuse not to proudly own it.
I don't know why, but this seems to be taken for granted. Almost as if people weren't taking Spielberg seriously, but I love it. I saw it first when I was much younger and some of the images have stuck with me as much as any other film of this sort.

Passchendaele
(http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/7964/40133012.png)
Set during the height of the First World War, PASSCHENDAELE tells the story of Sergeant Michael Dunne (Paul Gross), a soldier who is brutally wounded in France and returns to Calgary emotionally and physically scarred. While in the military hospital in Calgary, he meets Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), a mysterious and attractive nurse with whom he develops a passionate love. When Sarah's younger asthmatic brother David (Joe Dinicol) signs up to fight in Europe, Michael feels compelled to return to Europe to protect him. Michael and David, like thousands of Canadians, are sent to fight in the third battle of Ypres, a battle against impossible odds, commonly known as “Passchendaele”. It is a story of passion, courage and dedication, showing the heroism of those that fought in battle, and of the ones that loved them.
Canadian film told with compassion and noble ambition, certainly a story that on paper appears more interesting than it did on the big screen. To say the special feature 'the road to Passchendaele' available from the extras is twice as good as the film is no exaggeration, it is one of the better making-of features I have seen before, and is wholly more memorable than a lot of the actual film.
The war scenes in the movie, gruesome muddy trench warfare with pointless but courageous deaths, are simply amazing, intense, and challenge Saving Private Ryan for quality, and pull this film above what could of been a quite tedious affair. Unfortunately the romance between the leads continually muffles the film, is unbelievable, and eventually causes what could have been a great war film to misfire.
:D
Looking forward to your verdict on this! ;)

His portrayal of a lonely, at times desperate, disengaged and rejected member of society is convincing, and the bloody climax is brutal, graphic and shocking. On the DVD release I have there is an excellent feature by Laurent Bouzerount(sp? :bag:), who else, and I believe the DoP mentioned that the colors of that scene have always been of and everything should have looked even more bloody than it already does. He was hoping they'd find a better source one day to restore it to the intended state. (maybe even some shots are missing...)
Fell into the rail just before cleaning up the pins!

Taken
...
After reading good reviews here...
It is a surprise it was so underhyped by the studio?
Yes I have since read up on the movie and learnt the director has produced literally a carbon copy of the original comic. It may be a 'grower', so I will watch it again later this year and hope I enjoy it more. :hmmmm:
I watched the theatrical version.
Did you see it in the cinema, and if so how was it received by the audience? The first 5 or 6 minutes with Bob Dylan music in background was brilliant, but it slowly went downhill for me after that.
Sounds like another attempt to rip us off... :redcard:
Yes, I saw it in the cinema. Not sure how representative a Taiwanese audience is for that a western-oriented film, but t was basically well received. I found that it had its slow moments in the middle but enjoyed the second half.
I passed on the current Director's Cut in favor of the upcoming 5-disc Ultimate Edition. I may miss a few of the4 special features from the current release, but I don't want to double-dip.
I didn't realize before I got my copy about the 5-disc Ultimate Edition. I don't know if I'll get it yet or not. I'll see.I did read a few reviews before buying (since I was waiting for the DeepDiscount sale) and same pointed out at the very beginning that the Director's Cut included a coupon for the Ultimate; I believe $10 off or something like that. I still weighed options for a while and then decided to wait.

Nope not me, and we will have to agree to disagree on this one, I would never be convinced it was anything other than boring :surrender:Revolutionary Road

I could have sworn I've already read a positive review about it from you (along the lines of "beautiful downer"). But not only is that obviously wrong, there also isn't a review from anyone else here. Strange, strange. Anyway, I liked it a lot and don't get the "hollow, pointless" verdict, but unfortunately don't have the time to get into a more substantial argument. Sorry.
Romance And Cigarettes
I'm very curious what you think of this. One of my favorite movies (top ten, seriously).
We can agree on this one - see review - I loved it

While this US version is surprisingly good, you need to watch the original 6hour mini-series!! "Stunningly brilliant" doesn't even begin to cover it.
EDITh:
Sorry, if I'm preaching to the choir. Since you are from the UK, chances are somewhat better that you already have.
Oh dear, I lost the 3d glasses and our regular sets also missing :suicide:The US release had the entire film in 2-D as well. Guess that would have come in handy for you; watching 3-D without glasses for 30min or more does sound like a painful experience.
Thought I could watch the film without them but oh no, it is regularly just a hazy blur.
Gave up!
Petrolhead and car chase fans dream. Fortunately I am not a chav so these things do not overly appeal as the sole focus of a film.

:hmmmm:
Now, this film is rubbish, but to be fair, so was the original, except for an amazing... car chase. In fact, I did an entire marathon of movies that in some cases were just... car chases. And featured... petrol heads. Chavvy Marathon! (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,2762.0.html)
:weep:
I'm not a chav. Honest I'm not.
just looked on amazon.com... looks like my only choice would be marketplace as it has been discontinued here.
OK... now why haven't I heard of Fire on the Amazon? As much as I love Sandra Bullock! Will be waiting for your review of this one Rich!
Another review I have to look forward to. This one I at least heard of... but haven't gotten around to getting it yet.

Again Pete, you should save your money, this is the lovely Sandra in a very poor film IMO

Thanks Rich... that is unfortunate. I actually had hoped this one would be good.
I was actually going to say that while it doesn't sound like my sort of film, Riches review suggests it's ok for a certain audience and I suspect Pete can be a soppy old bugger who'd quite like it... ;)

Wow, you sure left not a single good hair on the film in your review...
I remember it fairly exciting and while maybe a little too long I don't really recal that to be a major bother. maybe I should rewatch...

David Lynch is like the marmite of directors, you either love him or hate him. Unfortunately I fall into the second camp, only ever previously enjoying one of his movies.

*Snicker* I'm probably the only one around here in that brigade. I have no strong opinion on Blue Velvet, it's simply too long since I have seen it. So what's the one you did like? My personal favorites are Mullholland Dr. and Wild at Heart. I also really like The Straight Story, but that's as un-Lynchian as you can get. It wouldn't be that one, would it?

Haven't seen it myself, but Roger Ebert's review ends with: "There is a scene in "Full Frontal" where a character comes to a tragic end while masturbating. That could symbolize the method and fate of this film."
This has been on my unwatched list for a long time now... sounds like it will remain there for a while! :P

Well, some obviously do, because Showtime has an entire series about it. Californication is in its 3rd season I believe. I only ever watched two or three episodes of it and was bored to tears.
I assume you've seen part 1? Surely it's more of the same.
Did The Midnight Meat Train scared you so much that you needed a break? :tease:
More seriously, does your 2 last reviews count as film review for the list?
I like Planet of the Apes, but I really don't want to re buy things on Blu ray or HD (unless they are cheap) I bought American Werewolf in London for £2.50 on HD it looked no different... that kind of gave me a bad opinion of older films on HD/Blu ray, Ill have to take a look at a few more.

No-one ever knows what to buy me for b/day or xmas, so now i ask for my top films if available to be bought on bluray as gifts. Much better than socks or bassetts allsorts
The POTA isn't such a massive upgrade in quality, but Zulu was staggeringly better than dvd.
Beaver is an excellent site for in-depth analysis of exactly what you get. Sadly they don't seem to have done Escape From New York, but see how both their Zulu (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare/zulu.htm) and Planet of the Apes (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews42/planet_of_the_apes_blu-ray.htm) reviews fairly match Rich.
In fact, bloody Zulu has just gone on my bloody upgrade list. Bloody hell! What do I need bloody money for anyway? :redcard: ;)

Zulu certainly appears to be looking stellar on Blu!
As I am sure everyone has seen it, I won't do a full review, but would just say I believe it is nearly faultless and a modern classic.

I own it but... :bag:
As I mentioned in another thread, I am currently reading the original Stephen King novella.
And I wouldn't be sure that everyone has seen it. I have recently shown it to six of my collegues and none of them have seen it before.
Also if I would buy it now, I would definetely go with the Blu-ray release (e.g. £8.98 at Amazon.co.uk). Even though it is watchable, the video quality on the DVD release is far from perfect (at least on my 2004 R1 release).
Have you seen the quality of the bluray yet?, it is on my wishlist but I was wondering if they have achieved a major improvement in quality?

I'll watch it tonight after football or, if I'm too tired, tomorrow since I'm free all day.
No need to beg...a little groveling will do!
Look forward to seeing your review

BTW Kathy where are the reviews I'm waiting for since the beginning of september? :tease:
Hey... I never seen it either. But to be honest it really doesn't look like my type of movie.
Aggghhhhh...I keep forgetting! But what will I call it? Kathy's little know movie review? Or just :devil:If you want to use my own thread (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,5335.0.html) I've no problem with this Kathy ;)
I will have to give it a try when I get the chance to either pick it up or catch it on cable. Can I add my :2cents: that this is indeed a good movie? I had resisted for a long time (just never got around to it, somehow) until Erik (from Invelos forum) pushed me to finally see it. I then postponed the purchase since the Blu-ray had been announced. While I wouldn't put it on the No. 1 spot myself I must say it's a great movie which never dragged despite its 3hr runtime. If anything I had a slight problem with the very last scene of the film, which I obviously can't descibe here.

Did you feel the film could have ended about an hour and a half in? I thought Dark Knight was an hour too long :p
Title: The Dark KnightThis has been on my unwatched pile for too long... How did you like the effect where they open up the frame from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1, just like what they did in the IMAX theaters? I am so looking forward to that.

I have to be honest, I didn't notice :-[
I only noticed it, because I knew beforehand.
But hey, it was bought for my 16 year old son, so I'll ask him after he watches itYou will have to wait 2 years to know ;)

How well fared Brandon Hardesty in it? He is the guy left on the cover with the green shirt. I follow his YouTube channel where he makes some fun movie scenes re-enactments.
For the film, of course it is a very watchable classic...

Now look, I enjoy this film too and I'm glad to see someone giving it a boost, but... well, that's my point. It needs support! It's usually universally derided!
Oh yeah, and thanks. That's another Blu upgrade to consider... :redcard:
You're probably right about Mel Brooks' Robin Hood movie. I never saw that one myself but everyone I ever heard from about this movie said it stinks. I did like one exchange I've seen in promos for it, though.
Why should the people listen to you?
Because...unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.
Title: CarriersI felt the same way when I saw it at the cinema. I thought the major flaw was that all characters were basically stupid morons and the films lacked a likeable character for the audience to identify with. Also, it could have been a bot more 28 Days Later, but instead they just kept talking until my interest was near 0.

Title: Dances with Wolves (BLURAY)
An old favourite watched for the first time on bluray.
Firstly the film. It is a superb, deep, moving and memorable epic, directed and starring Costner, in a role that suited his acting persona perfectly. It is passionately produced, with dreamy landscapes and backdrops depicting the old frontier, cinematography at its best. It's portrayal of the Union officer living life on a lonely outpost and his befriending of the native Sioux, culminating in his marriage to Stands with a Fist, is mesmeric and with the moving ongoing narration from his journal draws you into the movie. The use of native languages, Dunbars passionate character, the great performances from so many actors, makes you forget this film is 3 hours long and creates great empathy from the viewer. Whether this picture atones in any way for the treatment by the white man of the Native American Sioux is unlikely, but it does give a truer vision of a caring, compassionate and spiritual people that Hollywood portrayed unjustly for so many years.
As for the bluray itself, I was disappointed as this is the 3 hour cut, not the extended or directors editions. The visuals are superb, but of course they were also on dvd, its just that bit better now. The colours are lush and sharper, fully exploiting those spectacular sweeping vistas of wide open plains. There seems to be more on the screen also, with little or no cropping, adding that feeling of vastness. The sound is rich and wholesome, and bar a few grainy scenes this is a good advert for a 1080 transfer.
