Title: Weekend Movie Marathon: Unwatched DVDs
Post by: addicted2dvd on January 06, 2010, 02:50:02 PM
Weekend Movie Marathon
Unwatched DVDs
This time around I will be working on my Unwatched DVD collection. This will include any movie I never watched on DVD. Even if I have seen the actual movie before... as long as I never seen it on DVD it is fair game. This weekend I am increasing my marathon by one day. I will be starting this weekend's marathon on Thursday and letting it run through-out Sunday. I am doing this for a couple reasons. For one I would like to put a decent dent into my unwatched DVD list and for another... I want to watch a chapter of a movie serial in between each movie. And what with there being 12 or so chapters in a serial I need to be able to watch as many movies in the time. But I have only been average about 6 movies each weekend here lately. So need an extra day to try and watch enough.

The serial I plan to watch is...

The New Adventures of Tarzan
Tarzan meets Indiana Jones! A Mysterious ancient idol called The Green Goddess is being worshipped by the jungle-natives of a lost city deep in Guatemala. Not only is it covered in rubies and jewels, it contains in it an old recipe for a gunpowder-like explosive. Raglan (Ashton Dearholt, who was also a producer of this film) is sent by Ula's lawyer to find the statue first. The major and Ula meet up with Tarzan, who is on a mission to find his old pal, d'Arnot, whose plane crashed near the lost city. The group must nowsave d'Arnot and grab The Green Goddess before Raglan shares all it's secrets!

I know one I will definitely be watching (and not even on the above list... but does still count as unwatched DVD). I promised Britt I would watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine with her this weekend.

Hey, Pete, since you plan to watch a Tarzan serial, I wonder if you have any regular Tarzan feature films?  I have the two sets that contain all of Johnny Weismuller's Tarzan films...maybe I should do my own marathon of them someday?  I do remember that there is a bug on one of the discs sthat messes up the opening of one of the films (Tarzan's New York Adventure) unless it was just an issue one of my DVD players had with that movie.  I no longer have the player I was using them so I should try this disc on my current player now.  Did you know that the restored edition of one of these Tarzan movies has an underwater swimming sequence where Jane is nude?  :P

Unfortunately this serial is the only Tarzan I own.  :bag: Though Britt has one or 2 of the Disney animated movies.

My Thoughts:
I have had this movie in my unwatched pile of DVDs for years! I got a free version of this movie in a boxset of 40 classic movies on 20 DVDs that I got for subscribing to total movie magazine. With that fact in mind I went into this movie expecting poor audio and video quality. But I was surprised to see that both the audio and video was in rather good shape. I was able to watch this movie with ease. But what I thought of the movie is another thing all together. To be honest I am sitting here now still not sure what I thought of it. While watching this movie I wasn't sure if I should laugh at it or shake my head in disapproval. I mean I didn't actually hate it... but it wasn't what I would call great either. If I didn't know ahead of time who Jack Nicholson played in this movie... I would have never recognized him in this one. Not his face or his voice. Though he obviously did change his voice a bit for this role.

Chapter 1: The New Adventures of Tarzan
Well... the first thing I noticed is that Tarzan gave his yell in the opening. But this is not the famous yell we all know. Nope... this one sounds weird. More like... ArghhhhhhMaaNaaEeeeeeeee!!! He also has a second shorter yell... but it isn't the one he is known for either. The next thing I noticed was the length of this first chapter. Sure I know the first chapter is normally longer then the rest of them. But this has to be the longest first chapter I ever seen. This one clocks in at 41min.

In this story Tarzan has already been discovered, taken home, educated and decided to go back to the jungle. I kind of wish it took place before all that happened. But that is ok. I am really enjoying the story so far. In this chapter we get to see Tarzan fighting a lion, fighting 2 jaguars, and out-swimming a crocodile. The first chapter also has a good cliffhanger of an ending.

My Thoughts:
This is one of the movies that our good friend Achim sent to me. So it is a Hong Kong release (no region coding). I thought I never seen this movie before. But I now believe I had as some of the scenes in it looked familiar. It is not a great movie... but it was worth watching. I did enjoy it. One thing that kinda bothered me off and on through-out the movie is the forced Chinese subtitles. They distracted me from the movie a few times. As I said... the movie is pretty good., had some disgusting scenes in it. I don't think I would really classify it as gory... because when I think gory I think blood and guts... humans being torn apart. While there is a bit of blood. This seems different to me. It is more on the line of things you never seen before that look pretty gross. And those things coming apart and such.

The second chapter runs for 18min. While entertaining... nothing outstanding about this chapter. The cliffhanger for this one while alright, I was expecting better. But that is ok. I know that not every chapter can be filled with excitement.

Chapter 3: The Devil's Noose
This is another chapter that runs for 18min. Another entertaining chapter... though there wasn't much action to it. This one was more informative of the story then action packed. And for the first time... this chapter had some fairly bad video. the picture even blacked out for a second a couple of times. Once again... the cliffhanger wasn't all that great either. I hope this doesn't become the norm.

My Thoughts:
This is a movie I have not seen since I was about 14 years old. More then 25 years ago! I remember enjoying it at the time. So when I found this release fairly cheap I jumped at it. Going into this movie I was hoping it didn't age too badly. OMG those computer systems definitely ages the movie. But  the story itself doesn't feel too aged. The story is still very much enjoyable. One thing I never liked about this movie is Dabney Coleman. For some reason he has always rubbed me the wrong way... I just never cared for him. I do like Ally Sheedy though... when I looked her up in my collection I was surprised this is only the second movie I have with her in my collection (this and Man's Best Friend)... and then I have her in 1 TV series episode (Dead Zone: Season 2: Episode 11). I noticed that one of the extras of this disc is a first look at WarGames: Dead Code. Has anyone here seen this movie? Is it worth adding to my collection? Going by the first look at it I am not sure if this is a sequel, a remake or what. But it looks like it at least could be good.

Chapter 4: River Perils
This chapter runs for 20min. This chapter started off strong... then it slowed a bit in the middle. It picked back up right be3fore the cliffhanger... which was alright at best. This chapter looked good no complaints quality wise.

Now, the Fletcher family has found what they think is their perfect Japanese home – not knowing it's the same house where the murders occurred. But as strange events escalate and the ghosts of the dead toy with the living, the Fletchers discover they've become unwitting players in a horrible reenactment...one which they may not survive!

My Thoughts:
I normally like the '80s horror... but this movie just didn't impress me to much. I just found it to be to slow. And the effects of the ghosts leaves a lot to be desired. I bought this DVD 2 years ago around Halloween... and just now getting to it. At least I got it cheap during the Halloween sale. I only paid $3.33 for it.

Major Martling (Frank Baker) and Ula Vale (Ula Holt) come from Africa to search out the Green Goddess. A mercenary named P. B.

Chapter 5: Unseen Hands
This chapter runs for about 18 min. I was kinda disappointed in the way they handled the last cliffhanger. But at least it was somewhat realistic. The chapter was pretty good... I enjoyed it. I especially liked the cliffhanger at the end of this one. They need more cliffhangers like this one in this serial!

I guess like Achim said... she must see Hugh Jackman!  I enjoyed watching this one very much! It has a lot of the mutants and a lot of action. This movie is just so much fun to watch. After watching this I now feel like watching the 3 previous X-Men movies. But I won't since I need to finish this marathon. I really enjoyed every minute of it... but then I have always liked the character of Wolverine.

Ok..just saw your other post.  Then I must have seen them at the end of the credits.  I just knew they were on the DVD somewhere.

Chapter 6: Fatal Fangs
This chapter runs for about 15 minutes. This puts me at the half way point into the serial. And one thing I wanted to mention before now. The audio quality on this serial is in very good shape... but they made it extremely loud on the DVD. I have to lower the volume with each chapter. I normally watch everything (cable or DVD) at around 30 to 40. This serial I had to lower down to 10. Not really a big deal... though it does get tiresome when you watch a chapter in between movies as I am doing with this marathon. This chapter was pretty good. It has a bit more action. Because of the shorter time everything happened a biut quicker and it had a good cliffhanger.

My Thoughts:
Let me start off by saying that I never cared much for Pee-wee Herman. I have never found him to be anything but annoying. I wouldn't have ever had this in my collection but a good friend of mine had this in a big box full of DVDs she gave me when she was cleaning out her collection.... back in October 2007. And it has been sitting in my unwatched shelf every since. Since Achim listed it in the movies he would like to see me review I figured I may as well finally get it off this shelf.

So obviously I went into this one not expecting much entertainment at all. But OMG... 10min into this one I didn't think I would be able to make it through this one. By half way through I couldn't take any more of it. Of course I am not surprised at all... because I always had this impression of Pee-wee Herman... but I found this movie to be no more then silly, childish and completely ridiculous. I do realize that is the entire point... but it is just not for me. I just could not see past all that to find any type of entertainment value. I will have to see if Brittany wants to give it a chance. If she wants it... she can have it.

Chapter 7: Flaming Waters
This chapter runs for about 18 minutes. The conclusion to the last cliffhanger is a bit contrived. For Tarzan to be barely touched by the trap he tripped just made no sense at all. The rest of the chapter went along nicely though. Story advanced pretty good. There was some more action that wasn't bad. The cliffhanger at the end of this chapter is was pretty good as well. But the important thing will be how they get out of the situation. As this serial has messed up a bit there more then once.

My Thoughts:
This is one I picked up cheap (about $3) this past October. Just now getting the chance to check it out. Of course I knew going into it that it is a low-budget horror. Definitely not what I would call a great movie... but worth the time I put into it.

My Thoughts:
I been trying to decide if I was in the mood for the next Darkman movie for a while now. But when I seen that Renee O'Connor was in this one I wanted to check it out since I renewed my interest in her since I been watching Xena again. Going into this one I couldn't remember if I have ever seen it before or not. I liked how at the beginning of this movie it sort of reminds you what happen in part 1. I was a little concerned that I would be somewhat lost since it has been years since I watched the first one. And I have to admit. I found it a bit weird to see Renee O'Connor in a role other then Gabrielle. And I am talking through-out the entire movie it was just strange seeing Gabrielle in modern clothes and wondered where Xena was when she was in trouble.  :P But I definitely enjoyed this one. It was a good continuation for the characters.

Chapter 9: Doom's Brink
This chapter clocks in at about 17 minutes. This is another chapter that takes a quality hit. There was a few scratches in the film and such. And once again... I just didn't care for the conclusion to the last chapter's cliffhanger. That is one area where this serial is definitely lacking. Once again they are giving you a nice cliffhanger making you want to come back to the story... now only if they would give a good conclusion to it at the beginning of the next chapter and I will be happy. At least with this one I think they will have to since they have Tarzan chain to a wall and let a lion into the room to kill him. Hopefully they won't do something lame to get him out of it.

I have a number of Tarzan films myself and I need to pull them out and start watching them.  Two of them are early serials from the 1920s.  I think Adventures of Tarzan is from 1920 and it stars Elmo Lincoln who was the movies' first Tarzan.  This isn't his first Tarzan role but it could be his last.  It is a silent film, of course.  Another I have was released in 1929...it was shot as a silent film but I think they added music and sound effects since it was released during the coming of sound.  This film is titled Tarzan the Tiger and stars Frank Merrill as Tarzan.  I must admit I'm not familiar with this actor.  I think I read somewhere that Jane appears either nude or topless somewhere in this serial...that's even more reason to watch it  :P  The first serial is 10 chapters while Tarzan the Tiger is a 15-chapter serial.  Both of these are DVD-Rs put out by small independent DVD companies (Serial Squadron and Grapevine).  Of course I also have the two box sets that collect the 12 Tarzan features that starred Johnny Weismuller.

Chapter 10: Secret Signals
This chapter runs for about 17 minutes. The conclusion to the last chapter wasn't bad... but it could have been better. I do like seeing Tarzan fighting the lions and such. They once again do a pretty even amount of action and story advancement. And once again a decent cliffhanger for this chapter.

My Thoughts:
After watching Part 2 yesterday I thought I would finish off the series.  I have had these sequels in my unwatched pile for a very long time. So I checked DVD Profiler to see just how long... and curios how much I paid. As it turns out... both sequels were birthday presents from my mother back in 2005. Makes me wish I watched them sooner. This DVD release is a little odd... as it doesn't even have a menu at all. It just automatically plays the movie when you pop it in. Like... oh what were those things called again?... oh yeah... VCRs.  :P

It seems to me that once you get to about part 3 the series goes downhill. But I don't think it does in this case. I found I enjoyed this one just as much as the previous. It is a fun series... I enjoyed watching them. The next time I feel like watching I plan on doing all 3.

My Thoughts:
Brittany and I decided to watch one of her DVDs each day of the long weekend since she has been off since Friday. We both seen the movie before... but I haven't watched the DVD so staying with in my theme. While this is a somewhat silly family movie... especially how Nancy Drew acts and dresses like she is still in the '50s... it is unlike the silliness that is in Big Top Pee-wee... this silliness is just plain fun to me. But that could be from the fact that I have been a fan of the character many years. And I just found this to be a fun (spoof) addition to the Nancy Drew character. However, I would have liked to seen a more straight mystery (minus the comedy/spoofing) movie for the character. While this was worth watching to me... I don't think it would be of much interest to someone that isn't already a fan of the character.

Major Martling (Frank Baker) and Ula Vale (Ula Holt) come from Africa to search out the Green Goddess. A mercenary named P. B.

Chapter 12: Operator No. 17
The final chapter runs for 19 minutes. I was a little let down by this final chapter. As it had a lot of clips from the previous chapters. It was a recap chapter. This is something I just don't find necessary in a serial. Even if I was watching it first run back in the day... I wouldn't like a final chapter going over everything that already happened in a clip show type format.

Over-all Thoughts:
While I was able to enjoy this serial... over all I must say I am a bit disappointed. From Tarzan's fake yell. To the unimpressive cliffhangers and conclusions to the cliffhangers. To the final chapter being a recap chapter... this serial should have been much better. But of course as I said... I was still able to enjoy this serial some. I do (always have) liked the character. I liked all the action. Especially enjoyed when Tarzan was fighting with the jungle animals.

My Thoughts:
This is one of the movies in the Mortuary of Madness boxset. So that alone tells me not to go in there with much expectations. I am so sorry I watched this movie. I swear I should have just went by Jimmy's review of this one and not bothered! But no.. not me... I have to see it for myself. It is like they attempted to rip off Texas Chainsaw Massacre... but without any real story to what they showed! I mean it makes no sense! If there is any saving grace for this movie it would have to be that it is less then an hour long. But even at 54 minutes... it is 54 minutes too long! And I this movie must have more swearing in it's short time then I have ever heard in a single movie before.

Well... that brings this marathon to an end. Not a great ending to the marathon... but I knew that was possible when I picked one from that set to end it on.

I've had a few movies in my time that had no real menu, but I can't remember what the specific titles were.  I do remember one such movie starred Ally Sheedy but can't for the life of me remember which one that was.  And I haven't seen that one in ages so I'm not sure I even still have it.

I own one DVD (a R2 release of Versus) which has no menu and no chapter stops either!

I believe there is one or two of David Lynch's films where he insisted on "no chapter stops", trying to force the viewer to watch the film in one sitting (I do see what he does there...).

Sometimes I contribute, but certainly not for that one... that would be caring more for that film than the "director" did
