I've a question... it's not really one but I want to know.

Like I've wrote in the marathon topic I'm not sure to do it, not because I can't find enough movies to do the choice B but because I feel that many of my recent reviews aren't very good... So my question, if I don't review everything this time is it ok?

Since Rick had finally did one with us this month, maybe some new people should try also... Kathy? Mathias? Eric? Others? Nobody will be angry if you can't complete it, the fun is to try...

BTW Rick, I've really appreciated reading your reviews. I sure don't understand why you have make us wait so long

I'm not even angry after Sebastien, even if I had teasing me again by putting Chantal in his list without watching it again

Personally I've no problem for anyone not doing a review, it's just a personal choice. But your reviews are good Jimmy, not sure why you think otherwise?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've the impression to always write the same thing and don't write a lot of detail about the genre, director, actor, ...

Usually I do not have to say much in my reviews. And sometimes it is even the case that I don't have to say anything at all or I am just too lazy to write a review. Happened multiple times in my November marathon. In those cases I just give it a rating in my list and that was it.
I remember the first such marathons we did on this side, most of us didn't write reviews. We only filled our lists with ratings.
So in my opinion it is no problem at all, if someone is not up to writing reviews, but only fills the list.

My Thoughts:
I haven't watched this movie since I first got it years ago. My memory was that though it was an average movie, I enjoyed this movie. Somehow it was not as good as I remembered it. But it is still above most of the gross-out comedies we see today.
Tara Reid is weak in this movie. I really do not remember a memorable performance of hers except of great role in "Josie and the Pussycats".
Simon Helberg (Howard from Big Bang Theory) makes a small appearance in this movie.

I do plan to take part though I haven't watched my first item yet.  I still haven't decided which option I want to go with, though.  I won't do The 12 Days of Christmas simply because I don't want to do just 12 items...though 31 can be a bit tough since I didn't quite get there in November.  But I will likely watch some Christmas TV episodes as well as movies which will make it easier...maybe.  Don't you hate wishy-washy people?   I'll probably go with option 2 just to see how I fill it in.  My goal here is to not go a week or more with no viewings like I did in November so I have to play catch up by watching 3-5 items in one day...  :stars:

My Thoughts:
This movie has been on my "I really have to watch it again sometime" list for awhile now, but I never seemed to came around to actually rewatch it. Usually I get the urge to rewatch it, when I see Alan Cumming in something. This movie is the first time that I have noticed him in something. Just recently when his character in "Josie and the Pussycats" made an in-joke to this movie, my mind was nagging me again to watch this movie. In Josie he said, that some people have to wait until their 10 year high school reunion to show up their former class mates. Just what his character does in this movie.
I remembered enjoying this movie, but I was surprised how much I still enjoyed it. Mira Sorvino is really beautiful in this one. I also really enjoyed Janeane Garofalo in this one.

Gunsmoke
Season One, Episode 12--"Magnus"

Original Air Date—24 December 1955
Chester is concerned when his nomadic and "uncivilized" brother pays a Christmas visit to Dodge, but Magnus Goode proves worldlier and more adaptable to town life than anyone thought possible

This was a first-season episode of Gunsmoke...back when Dennis Weaver was still a regular as Chester Goode and when the show was a half-hour black & white show.  It's a light-hearted episode for the most part as Chester is fearing meeting up with his "uncivilized" brother Magnus (Robert Easton) who has spent most of his life out away from towns among the wild beasts.  He takes his brother around Dodge and his brother adapts fairly readily...in his own way.  The main danger in this episode is in the form of a man named Lucifer (James Anderson), a wild scripture-spouter who claims that Kitty is evil and plans to shoot her with his shotgun at her own party...until Magnus steps in and rescues her in an innovative way.  Finally, Chester comes to admire his own brother and gives Magnus his best knife as a Christmas present...only to find out Magnus plans to leave the next day.  It seems the town is just too civilized for him.  I like this episode and it doesn't hurt that Amanda Blake (Kitty)...and everyone else...was much younger-looking back then in Gunsmoke's opening season.

Title : Day of the Dead (1985)

Overview
In this third and final shocker in the legendary trilogy from writer/director George A. Romero (DAWN OF THE DEAD, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD), a small group of scientists and soldiers have taken refuge in an underground missle silo where they struggle to control the flesh-eating horror that walks the earth above. But will the final battle for the future of the human race be fought among the living or have they forever unleashed the hunger of the dead? Lori Cardille, Joe Pilato, Richard Liberty and Howard Sherman star in this controversial classic with groundbreaking gore effects by Tom Savini and featuring the most intense zombie carnage ever filmed.

My Impression
Surprise, I review a well known movie. You see I can watch mainstream film sometimes
For me this is the zombie movie, yes Dawn of the Dead is also good but it is just too cartoony to be taken seriously. This one had all the ingredients for the perfect zombie movie receipe : great acting (overacting some will say but not necessarily the case), great special effect by a Tom Savini at the height of his art, a claustrophobic mood, a complete schizophrenic crazyness (no one is mentally stable in this building, except for the chopper pilot) and a fear created by the number and not the speed. What can I add? Nothing really since it's the best movie Romero had ever done after Martin

Title: Duplicity

Runtime:125
Certificate:12
Year:2009
Genres:Suspense/Thriller

Plot:From the writer/director of Michael Clayton, Duplicity is a smart, slick and cool espionage movie. Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts* and Clive Owen star as two sexy spies-turned-corporate operatives who attempt to pull off one of the biggest heists ever. As the stakes rise in the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse, they'll put everything on the line to remain one double-cross ahead of the rest.

My Review:
Muddled and messy, disappointing given the big name stars involved (Giamatti, Owen, Roberts) and the quality of the screenwriter Tony Gilroy (Bourne Trilogy, Devils Advocate). I found it quite tricky to follow, as there were so many flashbacks it got confusing, although it was pretty clear from the beginning exactly who would end up getting conned.
It was also really slow, and I must admit I got bored of the movie, despite the leads having good chemistry together it was wasted with an inferior plot. The whole concept of industrial espionage to these heights is ridiculous, but would have been acceptable if the film was gripping. Sadly it wasn't, and overall is a major disappointment.

Title: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Blu-Ray)

Runtime:97
Certificate:PG
Year:1989
Genres:Comedy

Plot:This holiday season Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) vows his clan will enjoy "the most fun-filled old-fashioned family Christmas ever." Before you can sing "Fa-la-la-la-lah," he decks the halls with howls of folly in the perennial favorite National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Seeing is believing. There are 25,000 lights on the roof. An exploding turkey on the dining room table. A SWAT team taking siege outside. A festive supporting cast (Including Beverly D'Angelo, Juilia Louis-Dreyfus, Juliette Lewis, William Hickey, and more) and a John Hughes script full of wit, heart and sheer goofiness. Yule love it!

My Review:
My families traditional xmas movie, viewed countless times, and I still have belly laughs at so many of the scenes, and despite being able to quote most of the lines now, still thoroughly enjoying this classic seasonal comedy.
"merry xmas sir, merry xmas to you, kiss my ass, kiss his ass, happy honiker" as quoted by Clark as his bosses file pass in order of superiority.
Top rated movie
**Update for Blu-ray version - the quality is no better than dvd and shows no sign of upgrading, so pointless to purchase the hd version (sadly i didn't know this before buying)**

Title: Night At The Museum: Battle Of The Smithsonian

Runtime:105
Certificate:PG
Year:2009
Genres:Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Plot:History is larger than life — and twice as funny — in this monumental comedy sequel that's "better than the original!" (At the Movies)! Ben Stiller leads an all-star cast (including Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria and Robin Williams) as Larry Daley, a former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, where the exhibits come alive after dark. But now Larry's nocturnal friends are being retired to the archives of the Smithsonian Institution, luring him back for a hilarious, all-out battle against museum misfits who plan to take over the Smithsonian...and the world!

My Review:
Despite the lack of any perceivable plot, the inclusion of superb special effects, imagination and comedy made this a fairly enjoyable viewing. There is decidedly more action than the original, and the inclusion of Amy Adams (Amelia Earhart) parading around in tight jodhpurs was lip smackingly good.
Great cast that obviously enjoyed the making of this movie, and some nice touches and techniques to amuse many.
Good quality family entertainment, and a rarity seeing a sequel that is better than the first film.

It seems you were as disappointed with this movie as I was (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,3213.msg95149.html#msg95149), although unlike you, I noted a distinct lack of chemistry between the two leads. What did you think of Carrie Preston (the travel agent)?

Jonathan Pryce and Robert De Niro star with Michael Palin and Bob Hoskins in this chilling black comedy directed by former Monty Python member Terry Gilliam.

I really liked the portrayal of the "future" technology. It has a nice steam-punk feel to it. I really enjoyed the first half of the movie, which sets up the ludicrous bureaucratic dystopia. But towards the end I constantly thought that they could finally come to an end now. But it seemed to continue and continue. I liked the ending though. Even if it is predictable.

America's Funniest Home Videos: Home For The Holidays
3 Episodes

As you can guess, this is a Christmas-themed edition of TV's popular America's Funniest Home Videos...sometimes I wonder how many countryies outside of this country also have their own edition of this series...but never mind.  This DVD actually has 3 episodes of the popular show...two are from the series' earlier half-hour edition and include original host Bob Saget.  I think those are from 1996 and 1997.  Thie third episode, from sometime around 2003 if I recall correctly, is from the current one-hour incarnation featuring the host who is doing it now, Tom Bergeron.  I actually prefer the Bob Saget version because most of the clips from his shows actually are seasonal videos.  A good number of the clips from the Bergeron episode, perhaps as many as half of them, don't have anything to do with Christmas at all.  Perhaps they felt America has a short attention span and wouldn't want a whole hour of nothing but Christmas stuff?  I don't know.  At any rate, if you are familiar with this series, you can guess what you're likely to see...people falling down, animals doing funny things (like a dog preventing a boy from getting to the Christmas gifts), people falling down, kids getting excited over their gifts...and did I mention people falling down?

The Andy Griffith Show
Christmas Story (from the first season)

Cantakerous store owner Ben Weaver (Will Wright) makes Andy lock up a family man he caught with moonshine, causing Andy and his family and friends to spend Christmas Eve at the jail.

Ben Weaver is the definite reincarnation of Ebenezer Scrooge in this episode...even his "Christmas...hah!" makes you wonder why he left out the humbug word from his exclamation.  Elinor Donahue (a regular in the first season) sings "Away In A Manger" in this episode accompanied by Andy.  This is the perfect Christmas episode as it has everything...a man in a Santa suit (Barney), Christmas presents, the aforementioned Christmas song, and the meanest of the mean (Ben Weaver) rehabilitated by the sheer power of Christmas and friendship.  It's too bad this wound up being the one and only episode of The Andy Griffith Show to ever center on any holiday.

For now I will stay out of any marathon and just watch what I feel like and also catch up on some special features from the November marathon.

If I feel like it I may still pick up on the Christmas themed marathon later in the month. I"ll see if I a) own 12 movies related to Christmas (I should) and b) feel like watching them.

Title: The Grinch

Runtime:101
Certificate:PG
Year:2000
Genres:Family, Fantasy, Comedy

Plot:You Better Watch Out! He's green...he's mean... and he hates Christmas!
The Grinch is a bad tempered hairy green creature, who lives inside a cave atop Mount Crumpit, overlooking the village of Whoville.
As the Whos of Whoville frantically prepare for their yuletide celebrations, The Grinch decides to put a stop to Christmas once and for all, and steals all their presents and decorations on Christmas Eve...... only to finally come to learn that the true spirit of Christmas goes much deeper than thinsel and toys. The hilarious Jim Carrey spectacularly brings The Grinch to life in this magical live-action comedy which is based on the wonderfully quirky and well-loved book "Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

>My Review:
Talked into watching this whilst decs were hung, seen it a few times, and it is still a funny and enjoyable xmas family film.
Carrey of course steals the acting plaudits (only just from Max the dog), but the story is the real winner being so inventive and crazy.
Ron Howard doesn't put a foot wrong in the direction, and Hollywoods big bucks make the whole film feel something special.
Seasonal movie fit for all ages.

Title: Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas

Runtime:64
Certificate:U
Year:2004
Genres:Animation, Family

Plot:Find out who's been naughty and who's been nice in this all-new Christmas celebration. Santa Claus, Mickey Mouse and all his Disney pals star in an original movie about discovering the true spirit of Christmas.
Watch the hilarious antics of stubborn old Donald as he tries in vain to resist the joy of the season, and laugh along with Mickey and Pluto as they learn a great lesson about the power of friendship. Through the magic of CGI you and your family can celebrate the festive season with a wonderful new look at your favourite Disney characters in an irresistible collection of Christmas stories.

My Review:
Apologies to Mickey fans but this is a set of animated films aimed pretty much at very young kids, and hence we got bored of it very quickly.
The modern animation of the old characters was probably the only interesting thing for a viewer of my age, and was cleverly done.
No doubt a winner for youngsters who could watch it again and again to get totally hypo leading up to christmas.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to stop my marathon now, just after a few entries.  I've had various physical problems the last few years and one was having an eye hemorrhage.  That's where blood bleeds into the interior of the eye.  That happened with my right eye last December and now it appears to be happening with my left eye so it's very hard to see and I can't really enjjoy TV much even though I can see it a little.  I have a previously made appoointment with m eye doctor for this upcoming Wednesday.  Of course, if it gets worse before then, I may have to make a trip to the hospital before then.  But this is why this will likely be my last post for awhile...

Without a review I have watched now the following movies for this marathon:
The Big White ()
Nothing special. A decent comedy with Robin Williams and Woody Harrelson.

Matchstick Men ()
Enjoyed it just as much as the first time around.

My Thoughts:
I have a soft spot for this movie. When I first saw this movie, I knew Marisa Tomei only from her role as Maggie in the first season of "A Different World". I fell in love with her in this movie. She just is really adorable here. As far as I remember this was also the first time that I saw Robert Downey Jr. in anything. I didn't watch Ally McBeal.

Title : Red Porno aka Tenshi no harawata: Akai inga (1981)

Overview
Hitomi (Yoko Kurita) asks her co-worker, Nami (Jun Izumi) to help her out for the evening doing some modelling, while she goes out on a date. Nami agrees and on the night she is stripped and forced into posing for a pornographic magazine that specialises in S&M fetishes, titled "Red Porno". The latest issue becomes a huge success, with Nami starting to become highly sought after not only buy the magazine asking her to do more but also by fellow readers. Nami begins to receive strange phone calls and is soon relentlessly followed by a lonely man named Muraki (Masahiko Abe) who hopes to start a relationship with her. Meanwhile Nami?s job is threatened when a copy of the magazine is found by her boss at the office, leaving her with few directions to take.

My Impression
Surprisingly I've decided to review the worst of the Angel Guts movies (I haven't watch Red Vertigo yet). The overview tell mostly what this film is about if the fact its a roman porno wasn't enough to know. A little explaination for those who don't know what is a roman porno, firstly this isn't pornographic even if the complete name is romantic pornography they are more erotic thriller with rape as a central theme (so it's your general familly friendly japanese film). Secondly, the central character is always a young and strong woman and, finally, countains more or less nudity. Like I've said this is my least favorite of this serie (Nami the previous one is my favorite) and this is mostly because the story isn't really well developped (I could say that it doesn't make sense) and there are far too many sex scenes (don't forget it's Japanese, so we don't see a lot but it's in the  ??? category). Toshiharu Ikeda the director of this film will shoot Evil Dead Trap 7 years after this one, not really the same genre of movie but a much better one.

The set itself is a good purchase but not because of this one.

note : I've used the (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/Themes/OceanBlue/images/post/ratedr.gif) but this isn't the genre of film I used it for usually. I just think that it isn't a proper movie for the homepage.

I have to admit, that I have never seen this movie before. It is in my collection only because it was part of a christmas classics DVD movie set. I had about the same expression on my face as Kevin on the cover when I realized that this DVD is non-anamorphic (a personal pet peeve of mine, especially since I got a widescreen TV).
I was pleasantly suprised by this movie. I always thought the whole movie is about Kevin and his booby traps which I thought will get more ridiculous the further the movie went along. But luckily the movie is not really about those traps. The actually only play a role the last twenty minutes or so. Besides the bad acting by Macaulay Culkin (though I think he was only really bad in the beginning of this movie and was more tolerable later on), I enjoyed this movie.

Yesterday evening we had a party for my cousin's birthday. And we ended up watching a few movies. I don't really feel like reviewing them, especially because I didn't care too much for them.

Breaking and Entering & The Good German
I didn't care for either of them. I don't know if I was just not in the mood for these type of movies, but I found both of them painfully slow to develop, and completely boring. Oh well, can't like them all! ;)

Hannibal
I like this sequel to Silence of the Lambs. I was sad to find that they replace Jodie Foster, but I think Julianne Moore did the job well. I found it very interesting.

An American Haunting
I rated it as , but to be honest I slept through most of it. I was so tired when we started watching it. But the parts I saw, and what I was able to piece together was good. Well, good enough to warrant another viewing in the future and confirm what I understand of it ;)

Title: Very Bad Things

Runtime:97
Certificate:18
Year:1998
Genres:Suspense/Thriller, Comedy

Plot:Laura Garrety (Cameron Diaz) wants the wedding of her dreams and Kyle Fisher (Jon Favreau) wants to marry the woman he loves. But before that, his buddies (Christian Slater, Daniel Stern, Jeremy Piven and Leland Orser) decide to throw him an unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas.
Kyle's last night of freedom involves booze, gambling, drugs and even a visit from a young stripper. When the stripper accidentally gets killed, the boys get led by Boyd into disposing of the '105 pound problem' in the desert instead of calling the police.
Thus begins a darkly comic homicidal trail, dropped like lethal breadcrumb by writer-director Peter Berg in this audacious, sure handed motion picture debut.

My Review:
Strange film, sort of a whacky black comedy with violence and emotions.
The set of guys who hit Vegas to have a drink and drug filled stag weekend include an impressive array of actors, and with Diaz playing the beautiful but ruthless bride to be you think this film can't go too wrong.
The humour though misses the mark for me, it is quite warped and probably not to my personal taste. Some great performances from Slater and Diaz in particular raise the film above the mundane, and the script is fairly sharp and in your face.
The ending was surprising and funny, and the whole film is a good description of when things go wrong, they keep going wrong!

Title: Terminator: Salvation

Runtime:110
Certificate:12
Year:2009
Genres:Science-Fiction

Plot:In the aftermath of Judgment Day and the takeover by the machines, John Connor (Christian Bale, The Dark Knight), the destined leader of the human resistance, must counterattack Skynet’s devastating plan to terminate mankind. As Connor rallies his underground street fighters for a last, desperate battle, he realises that to save the future he must rescue his own father, Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek). But the most shocking discovery comes with the arrival of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington, Avatar), a mysterious loner from the past who challenges Connor with an impossible choice that will determine the future of the human race – leading them both on a brutal journey into the very heart of the enemy.

My Review:
Stylish and grim, in tune with the original Terminator, director McG breathes some life back into the franchise.
Christian Bale is ok, perhaps not my first choice for the role of John Connor, but does a fairly decent job with little charisma. Apparently he is signed up for 2 more of these films so will be interesting to see how he develops into the role. The introduction of new character Marcus Wright, without giving too much away, adds a new twist to the future and was an interesting addition to the story.
The effects are of course first rate, particualrly the clever human features of the new T800, and I definately want one of the bikes. The machines seemed to be less invincible than before, which was a pity, and some scenes were a bit too much 'paying homage to the original' than I personally liked.
In my opinion the Terminator run should have ended with Judgement Day in 1991, and nothing since has come close to changing my mind on this. With 2 new films due, lets see if they can make this special or if its just a case of cashing in on the franchise.

Title: The Hangover

Runtime:96
Certificate:15
Year:2009
Genres:Comedy

Plot:From "Old School" director Todd Phillips comes a comedy about a bachelor party gone very, very wrong. Two days before his wedding, Doug (Justin Bartha) drives to Las Vegas with his best buddies Phil and Stu (Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms) and his future brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis), for a blow-out bachelor party they vow they'll never forget. But when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning with pounding headaches, they can't remember a thing. Their luxury hotel suite is beyond trashed and the groom is nowhere to be found. With no clue about what happened and little time to spare, the trio must attempt to retrace their bad decisions from the night before in order to figure out where things went wrong, in the hope of finding Doug and getting him back to L.A. in time for his wedding. But the more they begin to uncover, the more they realize just how much trouble they're really in.

My Review:
Incredibly funny and a riotous success, this film is real laugh out loud stuff and is one of the best comedies I've seen this year.
Without any major star billings in the main leads, the film relies on a terrific script and top drawer directing to bring the comedy to the fore, and delivers a great film accordingly.
Very original and fresh, the humour occasionally tiptoes along the boundaries of decency, but manages to always stay on the right side of funny not indecent, with many scenes and lines from the film to remain vividly memorable in the future. Babies hand gestures, and the old naked guy being examined by the doctor, you know you shouldn't laugh, but cannot help it.
The outtakes are hilarious, and showed how much fun the cast had with the film, and overall this should be a good addition to anyones 'comedy' shelf in their dvd collections.

Or just after the first one since the story was ok like that. I can't stand Judgement Day, the original terminator returning as a wimp doesn't do it for me (he is a killing machine not a babysitter machine) and Edward Furlong is one of the most annoying young actor I have seen (not very far from Macaulay Culkin or the asian kid in Temple of Doom)... The only positive in the sequel is Robert Patrick (the special effect are good also, but for me that's not important).

Never watched the third one or the tv serie and I've no intention to watch the fourth one or any other sequel. I can say the same thing for Robocop also...

Title : My Brother's Wife (1966)

Overview
Doris Wishman's ode to love, lust, and marital non-bliss, in which sweet little Mary falls in love with Frankie, the slimeball brother of her dull hubby Bob. But when Frankie suggests Mary get money so they can run away together, he neglects to mention his 'other' girlfriend, the marvelously sleazy Zena...

My Impression
Typical sixties New York sexploitation... Always a lot of fun to watch, since it's the first genre I've fell in love with because of the dvd. Of course those films aren't shocking anymore (they were popular more than 40 years ago) but at the time they were. Evidently like many of them this movie was filmed without sound and dub later in studio (kind of evident since the lip movement doesn't fit... but it's even more evident when we hear Darlene Bennett without her Brooklyn accent). The story isn't too much complicated (the end is easy to guess) and we sure see the actresses often in black lingeries.

I like those movies. You can turn your brain off and see what was scandalous when your father was a young adult...

Yeah, I think even over the first movie. On the other hand, I'm not sure if the series would have worked on its own, without the mythology already established by the first two movies. But while you are probably right that the first one is the epitome of the Terminator idea, the series adds a depth to that idea that the movies are unable to fully express. Of course, that's a bit like comparing apples and oranges, there are certain advantages to a (well-made) TV series, where a mainstream action movie is bound to fail.

As Harry Potter begins his 6th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he discovers an old book marked mysteriously "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past

My Review:
I am not a Harry Potter fan - an admission that can nearly get you publicly flogged  :surrender: Having not read the books most of the films I have found boring and wanting up to this point, the characters dull and the whole saga artificially extended solely for commercial purposes.
This film does not change my mind, I rate it as a childrens film with large budget. The only high point was the introduction of the quality acting from Jim Broadbent. This movie seemed to have a lot less action than predeccesors, and an amazing amount of CGI is involved to create the most stunning cave scene.
I found it boring, my fellow viewers were blindly loving it although they commented it does stray from the book somewhat.

They are hollow and unwieldy, but it's also good old fashioned entertainment and I appreciate the optimistic tone. These are not films for cynics, that's for sure!  ;)

Title: Death Proof

Runtime:110
Certificate:18
Year:2007
Genres:Suspense/Thriller, Action

Plot:Director Quentin Tarantino delivers an adrenaline shot to the heart with Death Proof, a pedal to the metal white knuckle ride behind the wheel of a psycho serial killer's roving, revving, racing death machine!
Featuring exhilarating high-speed action, jaw-dropping stunts, and some of the most quotable lines since Pulp Fiction, Death Proof "is pure pulp pleasure" (Film Review). Kurt Russell stars as a sociopathic stuntman whose taste for stalking sexy young ladies gets him into big trouble when he tangles with the wrong gang of badass babes. Their confrontation escalates to a hair-raising, 18-minute automotive duel with one of the girls strapped to the hood of a thundering Dodge Challenger that will have you on the edge of your seat mile after mile.

My Review:
Joyful, unadulterated carnage and mayhem, told and graphically displayed in typical Tarantino style, this movie is a blast.
The 2 stories work well in harmony, it is sluttishly funny, terribly tongue in cheek with women in hotpants, skimpy shorts or cheerleader outfits, macho in the cars, and gratioutous in some of the crash scenes showing several different angles of the same violent carnage which ensued.
Perhaps the biggest negative of the film for me was the fake scratchiness to achieve a 70s look in the 1st story.
But besides that I really enjoyed this OTT movie, with one of the greatest endings you'll experience with a large grin on your face.
My Rating

Please don't make me a member... If I want to watch something like this I prefer to watch an original 70's feature and not a commercial cash-in who had flop (it isn't for nothing if the Weistein company is on the verge of bankrupcy).

I find it so amusing that most of the fanboys who like this film will never watch a Lee Frost, Arthur Marks, Al Adamson or a Jack Starrett production

Hmm, I think you can watch Death Proof with no knowledge of any of those films and still enjoy it And not feel the need to go back and watch older films of the same style  :tease:

I agree! I get tired of people complaining about the way Tarantino has so many clear references to other films. I mean in the end who cares? He's a man who makes films for the pure fun of making them, and that's what they are, entertainment which many people can enjoy whether or not they have seen any of those other films.

Funniest thing I've read since a long time...

No offense but I hate this guy and I will certainly not change my mind on the fact he is an unoriginal hack and a leech who had done nothing but stealing others people work in his fraudulent career for the pleasure of a bunch of fanboys who doesn't know better because for them a film like 2012 or Crank: High Voltage or Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is awesome ::)

No more comment on this from me, this forum isn't the place for that :-X

It does disappoint me when you say that, Jimmy, because surely you're including me and now it seems Rich too? Hang on... Achim even reviewed 2012, yet likes Tarantino.

And I don't think White Castle or Crank 2 has ever been in the running for the Palme D'Or. :tease:

Specifically on Death Proof, I haven't heard of the ones you mentioned either, but the key films Tarantino referenced are Vanishing Point, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and White Lightning. They are the proper classic car movies that people would enjoy off the back of Death Proof (although DMCL is rubbish). I had a car movie marathon (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,2762.0.html) to catch up with them...  ;D

Didn't sleep really well yesterday that's why it sounds a little bit harsh (ok more than a little bit). But everybody know how I react when I see Tarantino worshipping as if he was a god or original... But as a defender and fan of those unknown movies it always make me sad to see them ignored or discarted even if they are the original and even better. You're right this wasn't my best comment, for someone who want to see his taste respected this isn't really brillant to attack the taste of the others. I even find one of his movie, Reservoir Dogs, enjoyable. But I've a hard time with his persona for me he is a douchebag full of himself...

Sorry guys for my comment this morning you know I don't think that. Jon I've bought many good films following your recommandation, Rich reviewed a lot of interesting stuff (even if I find him severe some time :P) and Achim is the one here (with Kathy) who had the most in common with my taste in movie.

Jimmy I think people will have to agree to disagree with you :p

Reservoir Dogs in my opinion is brilaint becaus of the way its filmed, to me any film that can take place preety much in one room and keep me entertaned for that long has to have some good in it :P

Of course, I can see that he got inspiration from other films but most directors do that ;P unfortunately original ideas often get lost, and lets be honest... can anything really be original any more story wise in a film? there are always going to be elements of some other film in something.

I like Trantino I think he has an interesting career but I think certain films are over praised Pulp Fiction being my main problem with him.

Anyway moving on :p I will be watching some Christmas films tonight! and start reviewing tomorrow... I wont really be taking part in of the main marathons, just my own.

Jimmy's point though is that there are other films, perhaps as audacious and clever, that have been forgotten. They're the sort of films he watches! As I've told him before, there was half a chance Dogs was going the same way as those forgotten gems, except it got picked up so enthusiastically in the UK. Sorry, Jimmy! Our fault...  :hysterical:

I guess I don't hold Vanishing Point in such high esteem as you do. It's been many years since I viewed it, and to me , it dragged a bit.

Don't get me wrong I liked it, but I was making my observation from the viewpoint of 70's drive-in films. Which is what Tarantino was paying 'homage' * to with Death Proof.

Actually, it's time to watch it again, maybe I'll see it in a more enriching light.

Title: A Streetcar Named Desire

Runtime:125
Certificate:PG
Year:1951
Genres:Drama, Classic

Plot:An honored film. A milestone in movie acting. A landmark in the fight against censorship. Winner of four Academy Awards®, an unprecedented three of them in the acting categories. A Streetcar Named Desire is all of these. And now it's even more.
A Streetcar Named Desire: the Original Director's Version is the Elia Kazan/Tennessee Williams film moviegoers would have seen had not Legion of Decency censorship occurred at the last minute. It features three minutes of previously excised footage underscoring, among other things, the sexual tension between Blanche Dubois (Vivien Leigh) and Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando), and Stella Kowlaski's (Kim Hunter) passion for husband Stanley. "In 1951, you had to guess at a lot of things that are now made clear," Roger Ebert notes. Catch all of the classic that introduced a new era in filmmaking. This Streetcar is the one you've been waiting for.

My Review:
Melodramatic and grim, despite some outstanding performances I was not enthralled or hooked by this 'classic', which at 2+ hours long became quite tiresome. Brando was a pretty impressive macho guy at the time, and Vivien Leigh is at times wonderful in her role as Blanche, but in some scenes incredibly wooden and soulless, surprised she won an oscar for the part. The dark, dirty and humid New Orleans is captured brilliantly, as the apartment walls start closing in on Blanche, you truly get a sense of being there, shadowy and moody accompanied by a heady score, the cinematography is exceptional.
In its day I imagine it was dramatic and original, but without being able to put an actual finger on why, I didn't really enjoy this movie.

Well, Leigh was pretty well medicated on anti-depressants at the time and she does have that glossy look occasionally. So that may account for what you saw.

Title: White Oleander

Runtime:109
Certificate:PG-13
Year:2002
Genres:Drama

Plot:Oleander can be poisonous. So can a mother's love. Flamboyant, self-centered Ingrid is jailed for the murder of her lover. Yet she still controls the life of her impressionable 15-year-old daughter Astrid.
Based on the popular bestseller by Janet Fitch, White Oleander traces Astrid's remarkable journey to independence. Alison Lohman portrays Astrid, struggling to get a foothold in life as she copes with her manipulative mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) and with the challenges of living in a succession of foster homes (Robin Wright Penn and Renée Zellweger play two of the foster mothers). Energized by the real and revealing performances of a stellar cast, White Oleander bewitches – and haunts – from beginning to end.

My Review:
Hard to describe this film, very grim but at the same time compelling, depressing but memorable, agonising but uplifting.
A host of female stars perform throughout the movie, but the star of the film is left to the main lead Alison Lohman, who superbly handles a very difficult and emotional part and never appears overawed in such lofty company. Pfeiffer is unusually gritty and severe as the domineering and at times heartless mother, who the viewer slowly hates more and more through the storytelling.
A steady methodical pace helps a sympathetic direction, and the emotional setbacks through murder, suicide, abuse and foster homes are not overwrung, so you never tire of the material.
A realistically tough tale of a mother/daughter relationship, above average fare.
My Rating

Yes it is. Keaton is my favorite comedian of all time.

I'm a HUGE fan of silent films.

I think Gloria swanson summed it up best as Norma Desmond, "We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!" and my favorite line of all, "You are... writing words, words, more words! Well, you'll make a rope of words and strangle this business! But there'll be a microphone there to catch the last gurgles, and Technicolor to photograph the red, swollen tongues!"

Priceless

You'll probably be similar to me, because I didn't like it at all either. I think it must be Tennesee Williams. I saw Cat On A Hot Tin Roof years ago and found it beyond tedious. Everything is so... melodramatic!  ??? :-[

All I remember of that film is Newman scowling, Taylor whining and a sodding brass band playing the same tune over and over and over again.

Yes, you probably are right, it is the over-melodramatic nature of the film perhaps that was the turnoff. Lordy Be and Mercy Me (gazes off in distance with faraway look)
But you know, somewhere in the film and the cast is a good story, just not for me and certainly not dragged out for over 2 hours

Just watch the new Code Red release of Messiah of Evil and I won't write a review since I've already written one last year, but if you have seen the previous crappy PD release of this film and like the film go for this one also. The quality is incredible; we see what happen on screen, the dialogue is clear, it's widescreen, we see all the little detail in the decor and, specially for Pete, the god awfull song isn't there anymore...

Really the best dvd release by Code Red

Title : Suzie Heartless (2008)

Overview
SUZIE HEARTLESS tells the dark and harrowing story of the last days in the life of a terrified teenage prostitute. Brutalized, raped and fending off the pains of starvation, Suzie finds her only solace in the quiet home she has created in the derelict basement of a textile warehouse. Haunted by a mysterious young girl, Suzie searches the streets of Los Angeles for her missing family in hopes that she'll be able to recapture the beauty of her lost childhood before succumbing to the misery and violence of reality...and dying like a rat in the gutter.

My Impression
Certainly not the feelgood movie of the year, of course being a Tony Marsiglia's film it was expected but it sure make Chantal (his precedent movie) looks like a no hold bared comedy. I'm sure I have already said it in some of my precedent reviews but for me Marsiglia is the most underated and talented director actually. His productions always deal with very sad situation and most of the time the central woman character is mentally unstable (Lust for Dracula, Sinful) or completly at the end of her rope (this one and Chantal), but his movie always had a certain poesie and a little plus.

This one doesn't even had a single joyfull moment in it (even when you think so) and is heartbroken from the beginning (I have no problem to admit that my eyes got wet many times while watching). All the movie rest on the performance of Wendy McColm since she is in every frame of the film and I've to say that it's the best performance I've seen from a young actress since Chloë Sevigny in Kids. She make you feel that she is the character and not an actress doing a character, all this without having to say a single line (good thing since this movie is completely without dialogue, you read me right this film is silent). Andrea Davis even if her role is small gives her best career performance in this film, proving finally that she is at the same level than Erin Brown and Julian Wells (BTW Liana Davis who play the little girl is her daughter and she is as beautifull as her mother).

Of all the film I've reviewed on this website this is probably the only one I think that could been in the Matthias taste palette. Is it an enjoyable movie? No. Is it an accessible movie? No. Is it a good film? Yes and I'll go farther by qualifying it as a masterpiece a proof that you don't need 100 millions dollars to make the best film of the decade.

A perfect 10 and the first one I've give for a movie made after 1980.

Rating :

Edit : Now you can buy the movie directly from the director on Ebay. Don't forget that when you buy directly from him you will help the financing of future projects. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/130586183913?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_500wt_1202)

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra
WHAT THEY SAY
When a secret weapon is stolen by the mysterious and evil Cobra organization, mankind's only hope is G.I. Joe, an elite covert strike force featuring the best operatives from around the globe. So, suit up and join Duke, Snake Eyes and Ripcord in a race against time to stop Cobra from using their ultimate weapon and plunging the world into chaos. When all else fails... they don't. They are G.I. Joe!

MY THOUGHTS
Loved it! Action from begining to end. Pretty girls. Nice special effects. Nice gadgets and gear. Even a twist of sorts in the story (not that the story matters much in this kind of movie! haha). Much better adaptation of the subjet than I expected.

My Thoughts:
When I first heard about this movie I didn't seem like something I would be interested in. But because I am a fan of Marisa Tomei and the film got such raving reviews, I have bought the Blu-ray after the price has dropped.
I did enjoy this movie. Both the leads were really great, especially Mickey Rourke, who I only knew from "Angel Heart" before. Hard to believe that it is the same guy. He really must have pushed himself hard to prepare for this role. Marisa Tomei is still damn hot. I would have liked it if Evan Rachel Wood's role would have been bigger.
What I didn't really like was the cinematography. I know it was supposed to be this way to give you a feeling to be right with the actors. But this documentary style (a la "The Office", Christopher Guest movies) has now been done to death. And here it really bothered me, because there is no documentary crew supposed to be present. The main actors are okay here, but some of the supporting cast really behaves like they are aware of the camera. I have read after the fact, that some scenes were shot in real environments with improvisations by the actors (locker room, super market). That explains it.
But even though this bothered me, I was enjoying the movie. It never once got boring. Although I can't believe that the wrestlers would go to such lengths just for the performance.

This one doesn't even had a single joyfull moment in it...

Of all the film I've reviewed on this website this is probably the only one I think that could been in the Matthias taste palette.

So I'm the guy who mostly watches joyless movies? Thanks a lot.

While I'm intrigued by your reference to Larry Clark's Kids, I'm not sure if this is something for me. Your review actually reminds me more of Lukas Moodysson's A Hole in My Heart, which may have its merits in a similar fashion, but I just couldn't stomach it.

Title: Old School

Runtime:92
Certificate:NR
Year:2003
Genres:Comedy

Plot:What's a guy supposed to do when he catches the early flight home and finds his girlfriend in bed with a room full of naked strangers? Return to college and start a fraternity! Before you can say "wild and wet wrestling," Frank "The Tank" (Will Ferrell, Saturday Night Live); Mitch (Luke Wilson, Legally Blonde) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn, Swingers) have their own frat raging with out-of-control antics. But when things get too wild, the dean sets out to shut them down. The laughs are top of the class (even if the guys aren't!) in the hit comedy from director Todd Phillips (Road Trip).

My Review:
Coincidence in my marathon, this older film directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover)
Perhaps the only film that I have been able to stomach watching Will Ferrell, there are some good laughs mixed into this bawdy American comedy. Yes it is fairly childish schoolboy humour, but mixed in is a pretty nice story and some decent enough performances, particularly Vaughn who is surprisingly adept in this flick. The streak in town had me in tears, as did the KY jelly wrestling.
Park your brain before viewing this, and get ready to excuse the wettest lead in Luke Wilson, and this should give you several belly laughs.

Title: The Santa Clause

Runtime:93
Certificate:U
Year:1994
Genres:Family, Comedy

Plot:Superstar comedian and Golden Globe® winner* Tim Allen shines bright in Disney's magical, larger-than-life hit comedy.
Rooftop clatter leads to merry adventure after Santa falls down on the job, and Scott Calvin's son Charlie convinces dad to try on the red suit.  Eight reindeer pilot the pair to the North Pole, where they soon discover that by donning the famous suit, dad must now accept all of Santa's duties!  Over the next year, a surprised, not-so-jolly Scott grows a Santa sized tummy and beard causing friends, family and business associates to wonder if he's lost his marbles.  All except Charlie who thinks his dad is perfectly suited for his new job.
Each well-kept secret of the North Pole is revealed in Disney's hilarious and heartwarming tale.  Now you can unwrap all the magic of Christmas any day of the year.

My Review:
Sucker-punched into watching this again, but didn't mind as it's a good family festive film.
Tim Allen is okay, the brat is a Hollywood Star BRAT, but Judge Reinhold and Wendy Crewson stood out for me in good quality comedy roles playing the mother and stepdad who is a psychiatrist.
Enough magic and wonderment to enthral the younger viewer without going OTT, and enough in the storyline and humour to keep adults entertained.
All in all solid and fun xmas dvd that I am sure everyone has seen at least once.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
WHAT THEY SAY
Battlestar Galactica: The Plan... The Cylons began as humanity's robot servants. They rebelled and evolved and now they look like us. Their plan is simple: destroy the race that enslaved them. But when their devastating attack leaves human survivors, the Cylons have to improvise. Battlestar Galactica: The Plan tells the story of two powerful Cylon leaders, working separately, and their determination to finish the task.

MY THOUGHTS
I'm very disappointed in this. It felt too much like a "here's what you missed during the commercials" instead of the actual fleshing out of the Cylon's plan. It is too much of a collage of anecdotes, most them could be easily deducted from seeing the show itself. Really not what I was expecting..

Coraline
WHAT THEY SAY
From the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas comes a visually stunning stop-motion animated feature - the first to be filmed in 3-D! Discover how the filmmakers and artisans created the magical handmade world of Coraline, exclusively in this 2-Disc Collector's Edition!

Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door that leads her into a world that's just like her own. . .but better! But when this fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her "other" Mother tries to keep her forever, Coraline must conunt on her resourcefulness and bravery to get home.

MY THOUGHTS
Wonderful movie! Sure, it's a kid movie mostly, but it is so marvelously animated and so well told. But what struck me the most is how smooth the animation is despite being stop-motion. The amount of detail that was poured into frame is mind boggling, especially considering this is essentially a kid movie. I loved the character designs, and how they fit their personalities so well. Also, and that's a big plus for this movie, I thought it had a quasi "Burtonesque" quality to it with its visual style.

For those wondering, I watched the 2D version. I can't stand the 3D with those blue/red glasses. They give me headaches.

My Thoughts:
One of the best, if not the best, war movies. This director's cut brings a perfect balance between action scenes and character moments. The suspension during and in-between the attacks is perfectly portayed.
I have visited the set of Das Boot a few times in the past. It is part of the Bavaria Film tour. You are able to walk through the narrow U-Boot, where the cast had to stay in for months of shooting. Early hand-held steady-cams were used for the scenes on-board.

Chantal
WHAT THEY SAY
Writer/director Tony Marsiglia (Sinful, Lust for Dracula) and acclaimed cult actress Misty Mundae (Shock-O-Rama, Sinful) team up once again to deliver a remake of the shocking grindhouse oddity from 1969. Chantal is a grim and terrifying portrait of a young woman victimized at the hands of modern-day Hollywood.

Chantal (Misty Mundae) has just arrived in Los Angeles, California to become a movie star. Naive and delusional, she wanders the boulevards looking for her first big break. There she meets Tracy (Julian Wells) - an actress-turned-prostitute - and the two of them begin an uneasy intimate relationship. Tracy warns of the harsh realities lurking beyond the glamorous facade of Hollywood, but Chantal’s innocence makes her easy prey for monsters that inhabit the dark underbelly of the film business.

MY THOUGHTS
This is the kind of movie I had a hard time saying that I like it. It is not the kind of movie you "like". It's the kind of movie that "is".

What I mean is this movie is brutal. Not because it is bad, but because it tells such a sad story, with no embellishment whatsoever. The movie tells it like it is, and is pretty straightforward in its narrative.

The movie is about a sweet, innocent young girl who gets to Hollywood with big hopes of becoming a movie star... and it turns out bad. Really bad. The sad part is, I have no problem imagining that what is presented here, is the lot of many young hopefuls. The harsh reality can be so far from the idealistic view young hopefuls can have of Hollywood.

Same as with The Seduction of Misty Mundae (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,741.msg86706.html#msg86706), I'm impressed with Misty Mundae. She again gives a great performance as Chantal, our titular character. The photoshoot sequence is particularly powerful. The supporting cast is just that, supportive. This is Misty Mundae's show, and she pulls it off well.

This movie actually reminds me of Irreversible (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/) in some ways. It presents a brutal, discomforting situation with no artifices. The camera is just an eye showing you the suffering of a character. The photoshoot scene here in Chantal felt very reminiscent of the rape scene in Irreversible in the power and brutality of the imagery.

 :phew:

Glad to see that you have appreciated this one also, we are now 2 on 2 with this past order of film not necessary in your range taste. Now I just have to wait for Sinful... Suzie Heartless that I've reviewed yesterday is in the same mold, maybe you could appreciate it also. But like I've said it make Chantal looks like an happy ride in the park, so maybe it's a little bit too disturbing...

On the subject of The Seduction of Misty Mundae michael Rasso had confirmed to me that it was supposed to be a trilogy (it's the first film of it), but the idea was scratched when Misty Mundae had left the Retro Seduction studio to try a more mainstream career. Too bad that the rest of the trilogy haven't seen the light of day and will not, unless Misty Mundae return to the studio since she is the only actress possible for this.

Title: Inglourious Basterds

Runtime:147
Certificate:18
Year:2009
Genres:Action, Adventure, War

Plot:Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.
Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds", Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...
My Review:
You have to admire the reliable Tarantino, he does deliver entertainment and films that will remain in your memory, clearly things he personally would want to watch, and despite the movie being overlong it fascinated me, from the superb atmospheric opening farm scene, to the inevitable vital climax. It is beautifully shot and full of interesting characters, some originality is missing but this is not a major negative on this occasion. This is a much more mature Tarantino offering than I expected, very much led by intelligent dialogue as opposed to special effects and gore, layered by chapters which mould to form the whole.
I felt the Basterds could have been developed better, but surprisingly they are just a part of the larger jigsaw in the movie which I hadn't realised before viewing. There are occasionally some very violent and cruel moments, but did not leave any bitter taste and were in context to help fatten up the characterisations. Not a masterpiece, but definately a great film.
The highest mention must go to actor Christoph Waltz, who's portrayal of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa is one of the best performances I have seen in recent years, absolutely flawless and deserving of recognition.

Title: Public Enemies

Runtime:134
Certificate:15
Year:2009
Genres:Drama, Action

Plot:From visionary director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) comes the film inspired by one of the country's most captivating and infamous outlaws - John Dillinger.
Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean series) stars as the charismatic and elusive bank robber marked by the FBI as America's "Public Enemy Number One." Academy Award® winner* Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) plays Billie Frechette, the only woman capable of capturing his heart. Hunted relentlessly by top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale, The Dark Knight), Dillinger engages in an escalating game of cat and mouse that culminates in an explosive legendary showdown.

My Review:
My son fell asleep after an hour of this, I struggled through but it was excruciantly and unnecessarily long and drawn out, difficult to follow, full of mumbling poor accents, and generally disappointing after we built ourselves up to an expectant high of viewing a supposedly good movie.
The characterisations were totally underdeveloped, the action felt like it was plonked in to wake the viewer up, the plot noticeable by its absence, and the direction blatantly pointless. The 30's feel of the film, complete with the depression era, had obviously taken a lot of thought and was visually successful, but this appeal waned when you realised the film lacked any substance. And the music they used throughout the film, some kind of ill-fitting rock - why??
Christian Bale was simply dreadful, his accent made him nigh on impossible to understand, Depp was uncharacterisically hollow in passion for the role, the only actors who walked away with any justifiable plaudits would be Marion Cotillard as Dillingers girl, and John Hoogenacker as one of the drafted in specialist agents.
Give me the untouchables over this any day.

Title: Scooby-Doo: The Movie

Runtime:83

Year:2002
Genres:Comedy, Adventure

Plot:Zoinks!  Two years after a clash of egos forced Mystery Inc. to close its doors, Scooby-Doo and his clever crime-solving cohorts Fred (FREDDIE PRINZE JR.), Daphne (SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR), Shaggy (MATTHEW LILLARD) and Velma (LINDA CARDELLINI) are individually summoned to Spooky Island to investigate a series of paranormal incidents at the ultra-hip Spring Break hot spot.
Concerned that his way cool theme park might truly be haunted, Spooky Island owner Emile Mondavarious (ROWAN ATKINSON) tries to reunite these notoriously meddling detectives to solve the mystery before his supernatural secret scares away the college crowds.
Scooby and the gang will have to overcome their personal differences and forget everything they think they know about fake ghouls and phony creatures to crack the case, save themselves and possibly... the world.  RUH-ROH!
My Review:
Cute little family film, utilising clever CGI to make scooby the real star of the film.
The casting was pretty good, although I was disturbed to find Velma (Linda Cardellini) sexy at times! Matthew Lillard did well acting with thin air to create a good false chemistry with the dog. The humour is intentionally aimed to the junior viewer, plenty of slapstick and fart jokes. Needless to say i found it quite funny.
Pleasant afternoon viewing

Title: Stealing Christmas

Runtime:90
Certificate:NR
Year:2003
Genres:Family, Drama

Plot:Tony Danza, Lea Thompson and Betty White star in this modern take on the classic tale Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. After bungling his latest heist, bank robber Jack Clayton (Danza) flees the big city and winds up in the small town of Evergreen. There, he's mistaken by Sarah Gibson (Thompson) and her daughter, Noelle, as the Santa Claus they've hired to promote their family Christmas tree farm. Jack plays along with the misunderstanding while casing a local bank job. That is, until his growing affection for Sarah, his encounter with a kindly shopkeeper (White) and his conscience cause him to question his criminal ways in this hilarious, heartwarming holiday tale you'll want to watch again and again!

My Review:
Nearly unpalettable slush, with possibly the worst lead imaginable in the dull & wooden Tony Danza, a film that unsuccessfully tries to cash in on xmas by portraying bad guy turns good storyline, but fails in every way.
Totally unrealistic, obvious from the first 5 minutes, hammily acted, poor cast, amateur direction, pathetic love story, and miserably bad ending that could not have been more sickly if it had tried.
Definately AVOID this pile of poop.
NOTE - Despite what overview says, this bears zero resemblence to The Grinch in any way.

Title: Wind Chill

Runtime:87
Certificate:15
Year:2007
Genres:Horror

Plot:Desperate to get to Delaware for Christmas, a college student (Emily Blunt, Devil Wears Prada) catches a ride with a strange classmate (Ashton Holmes, A History of Violence). As soon as she begins to uncover that he knows a little too much about her, the stranger decides to take a shortcut down a remote country road. Caught in a raging snowstorm, the young travellers are suddenly forced off the road by a mysterious car. Stranded, they soon realise the cold is the least of their worries.
From Executive Producers George Clooney, Ben Cosgrove and Steven Soderbergh comes this chilling horror about the terrifying legacy of a sinister road that dates back to the terrible events that occurred there in the 1950s.

My Review:
Old fashioned ghost story with the twist of using it within a road trip movie. No real blood guts and gore, but a few chilling and jump out your seat moments. I hope that doesn't make it sound too interesting, because it wasn't.
Both leads are ok without being outstanding, as is the storyline which is pretty simplistic and fairly short. There is not enough suspense to peak any major interest, nor enough characterisation to make you care what happens to the 2 stranded in the car.
Low budget, needed sharpening, and in the end merciful that it was less than 90 minutes long.
Not my cup of tea.

Title: Cashback

Runtime:102
Certificate:R
Year:2006
Genres:Comedy, Romance

Plot:When art student Ben Willis goes through a painful break-up, he develops insomnia. To kill time, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket. There he meets a colorful cast of characters, all of whom have their own means of dealing with the boredom of an eight-hour-shift. Ben imagines freezing time, which allows him to see the beauty of the everyday world and the people inside it - especially Sharon, the quiet checkout girl, who just may hold the answer to resolving Ben's Insomnia.

My Review:
Quirky little British film, written produced and directed by the young Sean Ellis.
It follows a narrative from lead Sean Biggerstaff, an insomniac artist overcoming a break-up who takes a job on the nightshift at Sainsburys. Enter a lot of strange and funny characters, with traits very recognisable in many English people, and some gentle comedy moments. The main story follows his appreciation of the female beauty, and his amazing ability to freeze time by cracking his fingers, allowing him to strip female shoppers and draw them in a variety of poses without their knowledge.
I must admit that many parts of the film I found very erotic, the ladies he stripped were extremely attractive and typically buxom, the flashbacks to his childhood and adolescent discovery of women (through a Swedish student and schoolgirl friend) were sweetly handled but again very provocative, and the whole film feels like we are part of his dreamy existence.
The negatives are few, a football scene was hopeless, some of the dialogue padded and pointless, and one 'time-freeze' aspect that was not particularly explained enough by the end of the film.
But overall this is an original, funny, arousing, bizarre indie film that I feel many members here will really appreciate in their collections.

Title: Merry Madagascar

Runtime:27
Certificate:U
Year:2009
Genres:Adventure, Animation, Comedy

Plot:When Santa and his reindeer crash into the island of Madagascar it's up to Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melman and those wacky penguins to save Christmas. Get ready for a sleigh full of laughs in this hilarious new holiday classic.

My Review:
Basically a short special better suited to be an extra from a main film, but I bought this seperately for nieces to watch.
At less than half an hour (including credits) it disappears quickly, but is typical Madagascar humour, penguins on top form, King Julien the funniest and stealing the best lines, and sweet company of characters to make you smile.
However the laughs are so few because of the film length, and the fact it is produced purely for commercial cashing-in, that you can't give it a great mark

Title: Black Christmas (1974)

Runtime:98
Certificate:R
Year:1974
Genres:Horror, Suspense/Thriller

Plot:Black Christmas is a stark and stylish horror/thriller that turns everyone's favorite time of the year inside out. Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder star among an ill-fated houseful of sorority sisters celebrating the holiday season. Festivities turn fatal when obscene phone calls break the serenity and it becomes clear that a psychopath is stalking the house.

My Review:
Atmospheric and genuinely scary in parts, this 70's horror classic really delivers an alternative yuletide punch.
Stylishly produced and obviously gave ideas to the later produced Halloween, the inventive slaughter techniques, plot twists, and surprisingly good performances from the majority of cast hold this above other similar holiday horrors.
The sick prank phone calls are very graphic, the build up to each death convincing, and the light humour welcome.
Genuinely chilling without the need for gore, miles better than the remake, I personally find these older horrors much creepier and more convincing.

Title: The Black Dahlia

Runtime:116
Certificate:15
Year:2006
Genres:Drama, Suspense/Thriller

Plot:The Black Dahlia weaves a fictionalized tale of obsession, love, corruption, greed and depravity around the true story of the brutal murder of a fledgling Hollywood starlet that shocked and fascinated the nation in 1947 and remains unsolved today.  Two ex-pugilist cops, Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) and Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) are called to investigate the homicide of ambitious silver-screen B-lister Betty Ann Short (Mia Kirshner) A.K.A. "The Black Dahlia" - an attack so grisly that images of the killing were kept from the public.
While Blanchard's growing preoccupation with the sensational murder threatens his relationship with Kay (Scarlett Johansson), his partner Bleichert finds himself attracted to the enigmatic Madeleine Linscott (two time Oscar winner Hilary Swank), the daughter of on of the city's most prominent families - who just happens to have an unsavory connection to the murder victim.
True crime meets urban legend when De Palma brings Ellroy's The Black Dahlia to the big screen.

My Review:
Hollow and dull attempted portrayal of a true crime from history, told in the form of some noir gumshoe movie, and failing on all counts.
Despite a reasonable cast, a normaly successful director, a big budget, and a storyline from an apparently excellent book, they concentrate more on the relationships of the 2 main detective leads, and little on the investigation of the murder. The ending made no sense with characters that were not directly linked to the rest of the film, there is zero suspense or anticipation, the actors give mediocre performances (particularly Swank), and the lack of pace leads you willing the end to come soon.
The only element to admire in this whole sorry production are some spectacular cameraworked scenes reminiscent of Hitchcock.
A stylish disaster!

Title: Over Her Dead Body

Runtime:95
Certificate:12
Year:2008
Genres:Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

Plot:Eva Longoria Parker (TV’s Desperate Housewives) stars in this devilishly funny romantic comedy about holding onto the ones you love...even after you’re gone. When Kate (Longoria Parker) is killed by an ice sculpture on her wedding day, her fiancé Henry (Paul Rudd, Knocked Up) gives up on romance until he falls for the beautiful psychic (Lake Bell, TV’s Boston Legal) who’s supposed to be helping him move on. But Kate’s not having it, and she’s going to do whatever it takes to send their budding relationship six-feet-under.

My Review:
Fun little romcom, some belly laugh moments, and Eva Longoria Parker shining as the bitter ghost.
It is of course nonsense, but entertains just the same, and is an easy ride from start to finish.

Never seen this, but it sounds like a version of the British film, Blithe Spirit (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038363/) (David Lean, 1945; based on play by Noel Coward). It's good, though very old fashioned. Fun, if you happen to catch it one day.

Title: Badder Santa

Runtime:99
Certificate:NR
Year:2003
Genres:Comedy

Plot:Hollywood favorites Billy Bob Thornton (The Alamo), Bernie Mac (Mr. 3000) and John Ritter (TV's 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter) kick it up a notch in this unrated version of the outrageous comedy hit Bad Santa. You'd better watch out – Santa Claus Willie T. Stokes (Thornton) is coming to town and he doesn't care if you've been naughty or nice. Willie's favorite holiday tradition is to fill his sacks with loot lifted from shopping malls across the country. But this year his plot gets derailed by a wisecracking store detective (Mac), a sexy bartender (Lauren Graham – TV's Gilmore Girls) and a kid who's convinced Willie is the real Santa Claus! You're sure to believe in Bad Santa – The Unrated Version...once you experience this longer, funnier and more explicit motion picture!

My Review:
Hilarious film and one of my regular 'watchings' at this time of year. I like all the irony and different take on yuletide festivities, and the movie is held up by great performances from Thornton, Bernie Mac and Tony Cox as the 'elf'
The humour is very dark and continually 'adult', some scenes are very graphic, but it never oversteps the mark too much.
Unique, with an unconventional ending, not for family viewing but for me very enjoyable.

My Review:
Oddball story about a quartet of individuals whose lives intertwine. Incredibly foul-mouthed and topic wise graphically sexual, all 4 character leads are totally messed up both sexually and relationship wise.
Amazing to see 4 such famous actors in this type of film, but there was something about it, like a trainwreck, where you couldn't stop watching. It jumps around timewise without notice, so at times it is difficult to follow, and by the end of the movie you are left feeling deflated emotionally.
Watched once, never again.

Also featuring Academy Award™ winner Marisa Tomei (1992 Best Supporting Actress – My Cousin Vinny), Four Rooms is a wild night of highly original comedy entertainment you'll enjoy...without reservations!
My Review:
Dreadful and messy attempt at comedy, is this proof that Tarantino doesn't always get it right?
Four stories linked by bellboy Tim Roth, it goes from bad (withces coven story) to awful (man from hollywood) in a sloppy mismash of disjointed tales that do not raise even a titter.
Feeble and pathetic, the cast and crew may have had good fun making this, but for the unattached viewer it just doesn't work.

Yes, thats pretty accurate Jon. By far the worse story is the Man from Hollywood. The Misbehavers, a slapstick comic like babysitting ditty, is dreadful - but is the best of the 4 so that tells you everything you need to know.

Plot:
George C. Scott stars in this critically acclaimed version of Charles Dickens' holiday classic in which one man discovers the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas elicits nothing more than "Bah, humbug!" from Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott), a miser whose sole pursuit of financial success has left him a bitter and lonely old man. But a Christmas Eve visit from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future ultimately teaches him to open his heart to the spirit of Christmas and to the joys of friends and family. Filmed entirely on location in the historic English town of Shrewsbury, this lavish production vividly brings to life one of the world's best-loved Christmas stories.

My Thoughts:
I have seen the new Robert Zemeckis' Christmas Carol this week in the theatre. I thought it fitting to watch this one now for comparison. It was part of a Christmas movie boxset. This is the first time I have watched this film. I think before this week I have never seen an adaption of the Christmas Carol which follows the book. Of course I know the story, but mainly from the many TV series which used the storyline and of course the great Bill Murrey movie "Scrooged". It was fun to see a live-action adaption in comparison with a modern animated version now. I enjoyed both versions, but I have to say, that I like the new one better.

A great love story! I had feared that this movie will be boring or too melodramatic, but it there wasn't a single minute where it wasn't engaging. Despite the two hour runtime the time flew by. I can recommend it.

Title: Grilled

Runtime:83
Certificate:R
Year:2006
Genres:Comedy

Plot:Ray Romano and Kevin James - as you've never seen them before - serve up the laughs as two door-to-door meat salesmen who find themselves in a terrible slump. With one last chance to make good or get fired, the partners head out to close a perfect prospect but wind up in the middle of a big beef between desperate mobsters, ruthless killers and a sultry seductress. Now, either they find a way to get out of this mess alive - and hopefully make a killer sale in the process - or they're dead meat!
My Review:
Pointless and unfunny, a story about 2 sales guys selling 'meat' subscriptions on a monthly basis - have you ever heard anything so stupid! (or do they actually sell such things in US??) They get caught up with some crazy characters and a murder plot. And thats it!
Scriptless, inept and boring.

We have a guy here who deliver seafood and meat to the house. You need to be on his costumer list to get the delivery, so it doesn't sound that stupid to me

Title: Meet Bill

Runtime:93
Certificate:R
Year:2007
Genres:Comedy

Plot:'MEET BILL' ('Aaron Eckhart'). By all appearances his life is perfect - a perfect mess, that is. His wife ('Elizabeth Banks') is having an affair with the local news anchor ('Timothy Olyphant') and he is stuck in a dead-end job at his father-in-law's bank. Bill sees no escape from his miserable life until he becomes a mentor to a self-assured teen ('Logan Lerman') who is determined to help Bill reinvent his life by setting him up with a sexy lingerie saleswoman ('Jessica Alba') who promises to spice things up. Together, the trio confronts Bill's hapless life with humor and energy while forcing him to capture his dream of becoming his own man. 'MEET BILL' is a film about what it means to let go of your inhibitions and find the path you're destined for.
My Review:
Warm and cuddly comedy, untaxing on mind or spirit, but a fairly relaxing way to pass an hour and a half.
The acting is ok, you do find yourself rooting for 'loser' Aaron Eckhart, and of course having both Jessica Alba and Elizabeth Banks in the movie it is easy on the eye. Logan Lerman as the kid gives a top performance, and was recognisable from a few other big films.
This is certainly no major classic comedy or romance, but is a friendly flick and is a good budget buy.

Yes there were a few cameos, and a few recognisable faces from tv series, but not enough to save this limp film for me.
I just couldn't get my head round why anyone would have a monthly subscription for meat, although as below replies from my learned friends across the pond it actually does happen  :headscratch:

Title: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Runtime:104
Certificate:12
Year:2005
Genres:Adventure, Comedy, Science-Fiction

Plot:Wonderfully wacky. Absurdly hysterical. Insanely irreverent. It's the laugh-out-loud intergalactic comedy THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. Based on Douglas Adams' best-selling novel and filled with out-of-this world visual and special effects, this is one ride you don't want to miss. Seconds before Earth is destroyed by the nastiest creatures in the universe, mild-mannered Arthur Dent is whisked into space by his friend, an alien in human form. And so the misadventures begin as he and fellow travellers, including a two-headed Galactic President and a paranoid android, search for answers to the mystery of life, the universe and everything.

My Review:
At school HGTTG radio, tv and book was always the realm of geeky kids, (chess club participants who brought schoolwork in briefcases and were wedgied at lunchtime). I didn't like it then and this film reinforced the fact.
It was fairly well made and at times amusing, reasonable cast of actors and narrator who appeared happy to be part of this venture, but overall I found the humour adolescent and the script without context.
I understand even fanboys didn't like this adaptation, so we now do have something in common. Clearly another adaptation once again by Hollywood flopped.

I only ever read the first one but want to read more of them. I understand this though Ive done it with a few series myself where I have loved it, then suddenly stopped mid series and not picked it up again. A series really has to stay compelling all the way through for me to read them.

Clifford Lee Dickson as Boy on Street

Plot:
Meet New Yorker Boris Yellnikoff (comedy great Larry David): a sarcastic, bitter and brilliant misanthrope who almost won the Nobel Prize. Boris, admittedly, is not a likeable guy. That is, until he meets Melody St. Ann Celestine (Evan Rachel Wood), a charmingly naïve runaway who finds shelter on his doorstep. As he lets her into his home and his heart, he discovers that in this cruel world sometimes it's worthwhile to get a little happiness doing Whatever Works. Director-writer Woody Allen returns to his comedy roots in this poignant and wildly hilarious romp that Gene Shalit of "The Today Show' calls "Colossally funny!"

Extras:

My Thoughts:
It was my turn to select a movie to watch in the theatre. I have chosen this one not because it is a Woody Allen movie, but because I like both the stars and I was curious. I enjoy watching Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm and I could really imagine him working in a Woody Allen picture. I enjoyed Evan Rachel Wood's work since I first saw her on the series "Once and Again". She was only about 11 at the time, but she already was a great actress. Much better than most child stars. The most recent movie I saw with her was "The Wrestler".
"Whatever Works" is a really funny movie and both the stars did not disappoint. They were terrific. This movie was also well received with the group I dragged into it.

Personally, I like Woody Allen's movies much better since he stopped acting in them. Whatever Works is on my wishlist mostly because Evan Rachel Wood supposedly gives a performance quite different from her previous ones. BTW, if you like her, I can also recommend Across the Universe, Thirteen and Down in the Valley (in that order).

Ill have to take a look at those films Matthias thanks!

Pete, I think alot of people are annoyed by the way he talks... he talks alot and very fast, sometimes it seems irrelevant, he sound whiny.

Some of my favourite quotes are in Annie Hall... of course one is courtesy of Groucho Marx "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member."

...Of course coupled with all those things I said about him above, and this just makes me laugh every time I watch the film.

"The... the other important joke, for me, is one that's usually attributed to Groucho Marx; but, I think it appears originally in Freud's "Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious," and it goes like this - I'm paraphrasing - um, "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member." That's the key joke of my adult life, in terms of my relationships with women. "

Ive shown a few people Annie Hall, they either get it or don't get it... I think its the type of film you either love or hate.

I think Annie Hall is the type of film that you can relate to if you have ever been in a relationship that reflects the one Alvy is in, sadly it does infact reflect my relationship with my ex pretty much identically... although Im more Alvie and hes more Annie, haha.

I honestly think its like a more realistic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind... It is one of my all time favourite films

Is that not the case with every single film though? I think a person can relate to any film or TV show better if their situation reflects that or is similar too that of the plot.

Not necessarily.... films are generally written to focus on the widest audience possible, Woody Allen is said to have written Annie Hall as an autobiographical story of his relationship with Diane Keaton, and so it was more of him trying to tell his story, then a story.

I haven't seen many Woody Allen movies. I am not particurarly a fan of him. I have seen "Everyone Says I Love You", "Sleeper", "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Melinda and Melinda". The first I had bought because of Drew Barrymore. I don't remember much about the film. I will have to revisit it again someday. "Sleeper" sounded interesting but did disappoint me. I bought "Mighty Aphrodite" because of Mira Sorvino. But the movie was just okay. And "Melinda and Melinda" is an average comedy I enjoyed somewhat.
As I said I did not choose "Whatever Works" because of Allen, but because of its stars. And I am glad I did.
My favorite acting role of Woody Allen is "Antz". He was perfect as Z

I know that many films are aimed at a wide audience, all I'm saying is the reception context will always obviously be different for a person if they have a similar story to a film and can relate to it.

Yes I remember. Also I remember that Natalie Portman and Lukas Haas was in it. I also knew that about Drew Barrymore. The reason for that was, that she did convince Woody Allen that she could not sing at all. And he did let her off the hook even though he wanted the actors to sound amateurish on purpose. Strangely enough Drew Barrymore did sing in "Music and Lyrics" if I remember correctly. And off-key "99 Luftballons" in Wedding Singer.

She did sing in Music and Lyrics, haha.... Oh boy, Hugh Grant made me laugh in that XD that song "Pop goes my heart" its brilliant.

..And I believe she did sing in the Wedding Singer... although I only briefly remember.... the only thing I really remember about that film is Adam Sandler singing a Boy George song and that "Somebody kill me please" song.

Title: Things We Lost in the Fire

Runtime:118
Certificate:R
Year:2007
Genres:Drama

Plot:Academy Award® winners Halle Berry* and Benicio Del Toro** "give two of the year's most brilliant performances"†† in the critically acclaimed drama Things We Lost in the Fire. Audrey (Berry) is reeling after a terrible loss, and impulsively invites a troubled life-long friend Jerry (Del Toro) to stay with her and her two children. With each other's help, Audrey and Jerry discover hope and happiness in their new lives. Directed by Oscar® nominee Susanne Bier (After the Wedding), produced by Academy Award® winner Sam Mendes†, and also starring Golden Globe® winner David Duchovny (The X Files), Things We Lost in the Fire is a "truly moving and emotionally honest"†† film.
My Review:
Not sure why this film attracted me so much, perhaps the mood I am in, or maybe such a great performance from love him or hate him actor Benicio Del Toro. His portrayal of a heroin addict, friendless bar one, hated initially by the wife (halle berry) until his redeeming features and kind heart start showing through, is oscar like in its domination of the screen.
Although the pace is somewhat slow, and the length nearly 2 hours, I enjoyed this moving film and totally got in to all of the emotions, heartbreaks, fears and despairs. I have not a great experience with drugs or addicts, but this film seems to genuinely portray such a life accurately, the usual depressive state a user feels, and maybe hope for anyone either going through rehab or trying to find reasons to attempt to get clean.
But the film offers much more than this, it is uplifting and motivating, the script is exquisite, the acting of an extremely high standard once Duchovny disappears from the set, the direction is superbly and sympathetically handled by Susanne Bier, and the camerawork truly makes you feel part of the unfolding drama.
One of the best movies I have seen this year, highly recommended.

My Thoughts:
A great movie. The animation is wonderful. Dory is the most fun character in this movie. Too bad that I didn't watch it in the theatre.

In my opinion they both are bad guys. Although, there is method to what the doctor is doing, at least he realizes that it is impossible to kill all zombies...
