Weekend Movie Marathon
Unwatched DVDs
This weekend I feel the need to work on my Unwatched pile of DVDs as it is just plainly out of control with 586 movies alone! Of course some of these movies I have seen before... but just not sense getting the DVD. As you know... sometimes I like to have a little something to watch in between the movies as well. I felt like doing something like that today... so I picked a box set of classic cartoon shorts that was recently given to me...

As usual... please feel free to recommend movies for me to watch... whether it is a movie you enjoyed and would like to hear my thoughts on... or movies you not seen but would like to see reviewed. I won't make a promise... but I will see about getting to them depending on time and mood.
There is some that I am saving for other occasions as well... for example... I would like to save any of the Romantic Comedies for the week of Valentine's Day.
I know today is Thursday... and I normally do my Weekend Marathons on Friday through Sunday... but been in the mood for movies lately... so I MIGHT get an early start and actually watch a movie or two today as well.

My Thoughts:
This is one of the many movies in the Horror Classics: 100 Movie Pack set that I haven't gotten to watch yet. I decided to watch this one today mainly because I noticed that Lydia Cornell is in it. I really enjoyed her as the younger sister on Too Close for Comfort. Unfortunately she has a rather small part in the movie. Also unfortunately I had a hard time getting into this movie. I found it to be rather slow paced... and just didn't keep my interest.
The quality of this one left a bit to be desired as well. Of course that is something I expected coming from one of those cheap Mill Creek Entertainment boxsets like this one. But it is watchable... basically VHS quality.
Oh well... at least I got the set cheap... plus 99 other movies that I will hopefully like more then this one.

Show: Mighty Mouse
Mighty Mouse is an animated superhero mouse character created by the Terrytoons studio for 20th Century Fox.
Short: Wolf Wolf!
A flock of cute little lambs are playing in a meadow when a gang of shifty wolves decides to grab one for dinner.
My Thoughts:
This is the first time I watched a Mighty Mouse cartoon since I was a kid. Boy things were done much simpler back in those days. It isn't something that I could see making it now a day... but it was fun for what it is... nostalgia. In this particular cartoon there was no talking in it other then a short narration at the beginning. The only sound there was during the majority of the short was a few sound effects and background music. Nothing more.

If you have the time try to watch Auto Focus I'm sure you will like it. The film is about Bob Crane that you probably know because of Hogan's Heroes.
-
I actually been meaning to get to that one since I got it... but for some reason it kept being put off.

My Thoughts:
My brother gave me this DVD a couple weeks back. This is one of those movies that try to make it seem "real" by trying to play it off as real types found from someone's camcorder. Much like Blair Witch Project or St. Francisville Experiment. This one obviously a rip off of Paranormal Activity... so I went into it not expecting a whole lot. I must say though... I really enjoyed this one quite a bit. But I found where many people do not... I like this style of movie. The whole illusion of making you think you are watching some real lost tapes of unexplainable happenings... I just find it fun for some reason. I don't really feel right about comparing this one to Paranormal Activity... only because it has been a while since I watched it so I don't think I could do it fairly. As it has been almost a year since I watched it. But I do like where this one went... the urn of their father's ashes... the sister in the attic... footprints on the ceiling,, they had some decent ideas for the atmosphere of the movie. It is worth checking out if you like this style of movie.

Show: The New Three Stooges
In 1965, veteran movie comics, The Three Stooges starred in their own half hour cartoon series, The New Three Stooges. There were 39 episodes, each containing 4 cartoons with the stooges supplying their own voices. The team also filmed live-action wraparounds to accompany the cartoons. A… More total of 40 were done. The live action sequences allowed fans to see the team perform some of their classic routines in full color.
Short: That Little Old Bomb Maker
This episode centers around The Three Stooges as bumbling soldiers during World War I.
My Thoughts:
Just like all the others in this DVD set... I haven't seen these cartoons since I was a kid. I always liked The Three Stooges... so always thought these toons were fun. Of course they don't hold up to today's standards... but I still enjoyed watching this blast from the past. While I liked what they did in the episode... I seen the ending of it coming a mile away! but... I guess that should be expected as this was geared to kids... many years ago. Even before I was born.

My Thoughts:
I been wanting to check this movie out since I got it. I was never a huge fan of Hogan's Heroes... but I enjoyed it enough that I would watch it when I found it on TV. So I knew enough about it to know who Bob Crane was. But I didn't know till today about his exploits or the fact that he was murdered. I'm embarrassed to say that even till about half way into the movie I thought John Carpenter was THE John Carpenter (writer/Director of Halloween)... but then it became fairly clear it was not supposed to be him. I found this movie to be very interesting. But the whole time watching it I kept going back and forth on what rating I wanted to give this one... a 3.5 or 4. By the end of the movie it won me over a bit more. Definitely worth checking out if you never seen it. Though when I watch movies such as this one... I can't help but to wonder just how accurate it is to his actual life. But either way... it seems Bob Crane definitely walked on the wild side.
Greg Kinnear is another actor that I never cared much for in his past roles... but I must admit... he did a right good job in this one. And I always liked Willem Dafoe in the movies I seen him in... so he was a plus as Bob Crane's friend (John Carpenter).

It sure help you didn't know about his life after Hogan's Heroes, since knowing it means we know the end. The story itself is quite reliable contrary to what we watch usually, the script is based largelly on the Robert Graysmith's book who is the definitive one about the events and I think the son of Bob Crane was a consultant also on the film.
You are not the only one who think that the known John Carpenter is the one who killed Bob Crane, he even had to go to court about this against an american newspaper (not a real one, but the kind who made their headlines with bat-monster or Elvis sighting).
I thought of warning you first, but didn't do so to not reveal the story
-
That is ok Jimmy... I preferred the way it was handled!
And it is odd... the longer I sit here and think of what I just watched the more I enjoyed it... so glad I went with the 4 star instead of the 3.5 :)

There were 39 episodes, each containing 4 cartoons with the stooges supplying their own voices. The team also filmed live-action wraparounds to accompany the cartoons. A… More total of 40 were done. The live action sequences allowed fans to see the team perform some of their classic routines in full color.
Short: To Kill a Clockingbird
The Stooges are clock repairmen attempting to service the town clock tower.
My Thoughts:
After the last one I felt like another of the Three Stooges short cartoons... while it wasn't bad... I liked the first one I watched more. While these are very simplistic... and you pretty much know what to expect going into them... this one really had no laughs in it at all where I did get at least a little chuckle out of the previous one.

My Thoughts:
While I have seen this one before (when it was first released.. on VHS)... it has been so long that I went into this one without remembering anything at all about the story. It has also been many many years since I seen an episode of the TV series... so can't really comment on how well this movie portrayed the series. But taking this movie on it's own footing... it is a pretty cool action flick with some great scenes. It is one I definitely enjoyed.
Tom Cruise has always been hit or miss for me... only like half the stuff I have seen him in. But I liked him in this one. I thought Jon Voight was good in this one as well. Matter of fact... I pretty much enjoyed everyone in it. Though the DVD itself could have been better... the Audio/Video quality was fine on my 24in standard TV... but there wasn't any real extras to speak of... just the theatrical trailer.

Show: The Pink Panther
The Pink Panther is an heroic, moral cartoon cat with pink fur and the manners of an English aristocrat. He only becomes flustered or angry at obtuse or offensive humans who try to disrupt his existence, or at troublesome gadgets, rodents, or insects. In most of his cartoons, he stumbles into a difficult situation and stoically endeavors to make the best of it.
Short: Pink on the Cob
The Pink Panther opens a corn vending stand adjacent to his vast corn field, which is invaded by a tenacious pair of crows who begin devouring the panther's corn.
My Thoughts:
I decided to expand on what I watch... instead of just the DVD set from the opening post... I decided to watch a toon or two from the Pink Panther DVD I recently got as well. I chose this particular short because the back of the DVD has the original air dates for each short... and this one came out just 2 days before I was born. When I saw the date I figured why not?
Once again... this is a toon I haven't seen since I was a kid. And I must admit... it is better then I remembered. I actually got more of a laugh out of this then I had out of all of the previous toons I watched together.

My Thoughts:
Going into this one I couldn't remember if I seen it before or not. There was enough scenes in it that looked familiar to make me believe I have. Though I am sure it hasn't been since it was originally released. I did enjoy this one... but not as much as I did the first one. I found I just didn't care about the story in this one as much as I did the first.

After that last short... I felt like watching some more Pink Panther. I enjoyed watching this short as well. Though I did like the first one I watch a little more. This one wasn't far behind it though. I may have to keep The Pink Panther in mind... and get me some more shorts on DVD.

Trivia
My Thoughts:
Next I felt like watching something a little more on the comedy side. After watching the part one last month for the first time in many years... thought I would do the same for part 2 now. While I did enjoy it quite a bit... I do like the first one better. I don't know... I think there is just too much going on all at once in this one. It is like they squeezed every idea they could think of into this one. Through-out the entire movie I was thinking the guy that owns the building looks so familiar to me... but I just couldn't place it. So after the movie was over I checked the credits... turned out to be John Glover (Lionel Luthor on Smallville). He looked so different! Of course this movie is a good 20 years old now.

My mood has changed a bit today... I don't really feel up to any more of those cartoon shorts. So for the last day of the marathon I am going to go strictly with the movies... no toons in between.

Subtitles: English, French
Stars:
Patricia Clarkson

Plot:
The murder suspect confessed, then took his own life. Case closed? Not for Nevada homicide cop Jerry Black. He has his own instincts about the crime. And even though he's ready to begin a gone-fishin' early retirement, he promised the victim's family he'd find the killer.
Jack Nicholson (as Jerry) heads an all-star cast (Robin Wright Penn, Aaron Eckhart, Benicio Del Toro and more) in the gripping tale of a detective, driven to seek the truth…and driven into the darker reaches of his own mind by obsession. Sean Penn (who previously guided Nicholson in "The Crossing Guard") directs, shaping sharp portrayals, crisp detail and a mounting sense of dread into a thriller both unconventional and unforgettable.

My Thoughts:
When I stumbled onto this movie in my profiler... a movie I forgot I had... I checked the trailer and it looked good so decided to watch this one next. While it is a good enough movie... I don't feel it was that great. Being just over 2hrs the movie felt a little drawn out. And the ending just wasn't satisfying to me. The ending was a bit dark... and a bit strange... but it just didn't feel right for the story that was told. Jack Nicholson did a good job in the movie... as did most everyone else. But for me at least... the ending brought this movie down quite a bit.
