As some of you do not visit the Invelos forums regularly anymore, I decided to also open up a thread for my Awards plugin here.
I will update you, if new award files or a new plugin version are available on my homepage. And you can ask questions if you are having trouble with it.
If you want to contribute award data, here is in my opinion the best way to do it:
- make sure you have the most up-to-date version of the award data if you update an existing award
- use the award editor in my program "Cinematic Collection Viewer" (Edit->Awards...)
- Export the award as XML (File->Export->Awards...). For each award a seperate XML File.
- Send it to me and I will include it with the next update

New version: v1.6
Finally! It has been a while since I released a new version.
New: Transfer selected/flagged profiles to CCV database
If no profile is flagged, currently selected profile will be transferred. Toolbar Icon is also available for this feature.
This feature has the same effect as exporting the profile to XML and importing it in Cinematic Collection Viewer.
This feature is interesting to those who use Cinematic Collection Viewer in parallel to DVD Profiler.
New: Automatically transfer profile changes to CCV database
If enabled (Tools->CCVPlugin->Auto-Sync Viewer Profile), all changes done to a DVD Profiler profile will automatically be transferred to the CCV database
This feature is interesting to those who use Cinematic Collection Viewer in parallel to DVD Profiler.
New: Additional Info window
New window which will display all additional infos entered for the selected profile in the CCV database
Change: Award display algorithm synched with current version of Cinematic Collection Viewer
Notes:
- I first implemented the syncing of the profiles about two years ago. I never released it, because there is a problem when DVD Profiler has been running for a few days.
After that time an unhandled exception occurs when using this feature. Recently I got a chance to look further into it and I found out, that a function I use from the Profiler PluginAPI is causing this problem.
There is nothing I can do about it (I have reported this bug). When this happens, only a restart of DVD Profiler helps. When this error happens, no data is lost. It happens during reading of the profile infos. No changes to the Viewer database has been done at this point.
- I personally have been using the manual syncing for a long time now. I don't expect any major problems with that.
But I haven't used the auto-syncing much, because I like to work on the cast and crew in CCViewer while I am working on the other infos in DVD Profiler in parallel. When using auto-sync I would overwrite my cast and crew changes before I have a chance to copy them to the DVD Profiler profile.
So I don't have any experience using this feature in the long term. Data loss is not to be expected though if a problem should arrise.
By default this feature is disabled.
-
Well done, Tom! I'll have a play soon...
-
Question for you Tom...
I use this plugin but I do not use the CCV program. So when I updated the plugin to the lasted version I disabled the the button to sync with the CCV profile. Which is fine till I close the program... but once I reopen the program the button is showing it again.... making me disable the button every time I open the program.
Any ideas on how to make it stay disabled?
-
I think it stays away when you save your layout again.
-
Thanks Tom... I did try that but it didn't work for me.

Update award:

-
Thanks Tom... I didn't even realize the Emmy Awards happened. They slipped by me somehow this year. :P
-
I remembered them when they mentioned them in the commentary of a The Office episode and then I noticed that even two years were missing in the awards data.

Some reason my awards window stopped working. Wondering if anyone can help get it back. all the sudden the window just went to a light blue instead of showing awards. I tried both Select database and Import Award Files... neither helped.
Here is what I see...
Any thoughts?
-
Did you recently update the plugin or changed your layout? If this happens you simply have to remove the award window and enable it again via View->Window->Awards and then place it again in your layout. Then save your layout again (otherwise you will have the same problem again the next time you start DVD Profiler).
-
Did neither... but talk about very odd... according to VIEW-->Windows the Awards window isn;t even on! No check next to it. And when I turn it on It brings up a window I can place. But it ends up going right next to the one in the picture... it don't replace it. So I have 2 awards tabs. One that works and one that is blue like the above picture.
So now how do I get ride of the blue awards tab?

Click on the old tab and press "Del".
Edit: Sorry. doesn't work. Drag it out of your layout so that it is an extra window and then close it via the "X"-Button on the upper right corner.
-
Nope... That did nothing.
-
Nope... it won't let me drag it either
-
Nope... it won't let me drag it either
I found just something out, which I didn't know before. Maybe it helps.
Double-click on the tab. It should make it standalone.
And I noticed that double-clicking it again, moves it back into the layout.
-
Double clicking it gives me an hour glass for a split second... but doesn't do anything.
-
I also tried closing the program and re-opening it... didn't help.

Could it be, that you have locked your layout? View->Lock Layout.

Duh! I should have thought of that! That did it for me! Thank You!

New version 2.0
It has been a long time since I have updated this plugin. As you may know, I am currently reworking my Cinematic Collection Viewer program. So I thought I let this plugin benefit from my work there.
So here some nice new features:
- Award editor (to directly edit the awards from inside DVD Profiler). Tools->CCVPlugin->Edit awards...
- Update awards directly from my online pool (Tools->CCVPlugin->Online Update Awards...)
- Export awards as XML and compressed XML
- Import awards from compressed XML
- Improved progress display
- Award panel color adjusts to theme color
- SQLite database format besides MSAccess format supported
I hope the award editor motivates more people to provide additional award data ;)
A question to all users: Now that online update (and export) is supported, can I discontinue providing the award data as zip on my website? This would make updating the awards easier for me.
Feedback welcome!
-
Is it updated on your web page Tom? The one listed is the 2.6 version last updated 12/8/2010
-
It is the new version on the site. I downloaded it and installed it... But unfortunately all I get is...
And yes I tried to restart DVDP (a couple times) and it still came up.

Maybe it is because I haven't seen this work yet to see how it will work... but if there is no zip files... where does the online update update from? Is it still going to be on your site but everyone submits and updates from the site similar to how DVD Profiler is. Or how? If so I of course have no problem with no zip files on the site. But you would have to make the update be mandatory for everyone. Which I would make sure everyone realizes.

:weep:
It worked wonderfully yesterday. Now I deleted everything again and tried again. Now I have the same error and I am stumped what could be missing. I am using the same DLLs in CCViewer and there it works.

It would work like it has been working in CCViewer for a while now. I would only upload the award data in my online data pool on my website, from where the plugin will download them.
Currently I also have to zip all awards twice into zips (all awards in one file, all awards as single files) and also upload these two files.
-
I have uploaded a new version. Please try again. It should work now *fingers crossed*
-
Looks like it is working now!
I would definitely look into helping with the awards... but may have to wait. It is pretty up to date with all the major awards isn't it? :P
-
Hey Tom...
I just did the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards for 2010 through the plugin. Now how do I go about sending this in to share with everyone?

Hey Tom...

Goto Tools->CCVPlugin->Export Awards..., select "Fangoria Chainsaw Awards" from the list, and then save it as "Compressed Awards XML" (it's the default). And then send it to me and I will add it to the online pool :)
How was the editor working for you? Is it intuitive?
-
I saw that and was thinking that is how it should be done. But was thinking maybe there would be a way to send you just 2010... but thinking twice about it, it makes since that all the years would be in the same file.
It worked great. I did have to think a few minutes on how to do the people there at first. It didn't occur to me to to the movie first and then the person. But it did pop in my mind shortly after.
Where should I send it to? if you don't want your email address in the post (makes sense) you can PM me with it. Is it the email you have at Invelos? if so I already have it!

Yes, it must be the same way as the awards are usually shown.

You can use the mail address at Invelos, or the one shown in the plugin readme. Or you can use the one here in the forum when pressing the email option under my avatar on the left ;)
As you said, I will not post it in the forums (those damn robots). I don't get spam on these email addresses and it should stay this way :)

New version 2.1
New: Drag & Drop entries in award editor
Fix: Always show Won and Nominated categories in award editor even if empty
-
Fangoria Chainsaw Awards 2010 (addicted2dvd)
added movie year for Sherlock Holmes (2009) in some awards to avoid it showing up for the new one (Tom)
-
Filmfare Awards 2012 (Tom)
International Indian Film Academy Awards 2011 (Tom)
I have to admit, that while adding these awards I had way more the urge to check out some of the nominees than I had reading the nominees for the Academy awards. I even already had some of the movies on my wishlist and now I have a few more.
-
Version 2.2
New: Retrieve episode data from online pool (announcements here (http://invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=16737))
New: Assign episodes to profiles
New: Show episodes (including episode specific cast and crew) for profile
New: Edit additional infos for profiles and for episodes
Fix: Some minor issues in award editor
Fix: Setting of auto-sync flag works again
Fix: Fixed syncing of flagged profiles (stopped working after the first use)
I have merged my development of CCViewer and CCVPlugin into one workspace. Now it is easier for me to develop those in parallel and integrate more features of CCViewer into the plugin.
If there is interest, I will continue this. Among others, the following would be possible to integrate (with varying degree of effort):
- editing episodes / TV series
- setting watched dates and review for episodes
- HTML export/Skin handling
- SQL Queries
- Charts
Please let me know if there is interest in this. If it is worth for me to spent the efforts.
-
I downloaded the update... I have to admit I look at this episode thing and have no idea what so every it is supposed to do. I also don't know about combining awards info with episode info... but that could be because I don't understand what any of this episode stuff is supposed to do. Is it making changes to the actual profiles? If so then I really don't like that idea. I personally don't think the plugin should change anything in the profiles. I personally think it is better to be two different plugins if you want to do something with episodes as a plugin. But hey... that is just my line of thinking. As I said... from someone that is completely confused about what I am looking at.
-
How it is working is in the readme. And no, of course it doesn't change anything in the profile.
This plugin is called Cinematic Collection Viewer Plugin for a reason (even though it is mainly used as award plugin by most). It serves as a connection to the Cinematic Collection Viewer database. And any change you make with my plugin, is only done there. Nothing is done in the Profiler database.
And I think if you see what the episode handling does, it would be for great use for you.
I always said that I don't like the episode handling in DVD Profiler. This is one of the reasons that I still maintain the CCViewer. Now I brought some of the features of it to DVD Profiler.
-
Here the excerpt from the readme:
Episode handling:
1) You can download TV series data via "Tools->CCVPlugin->Online Update TV Series..."
2) Assign episodes to a profile ("Tools->CCVPlugin->Assign Episodes...", or via context menu in main collection list)
3) Open the windows "Episodes", "Cast (CCV)" and "Crew (CCV") via "View->Windows" and place the windows where you like
4) Click on episode will now show cast and crew of this episode. And also additional info in Info window ("View->Windows->Info")
5) You can edit additional infos of episode via context menu in episode list
Additional Infos:
You can edit additional infos for profiles ("Tools->CCVPlugin->Edit Additional Info...", or via context menu in main collection list) and for episodes (context menu in episode list).
Additional Infos are shown in Info window ("View->Windows->Info")
-
OK... I see I looked in the wrong place for the windows. I was thinking html windows instead of regular windows... will see what I can figure out now. :)
-
One possibility would be that I would go the other direction: Offer less but without Viewer database.
I.e. no episode specific watched dates and additional info. And no episode data from my online pool. But simply parse the cast and crew from the Profiler profiles and create a episode list with episode specific cast and crew. But then nothing more would be possible.
-
OK... Don't really care for the cast and crew per episode as I have no problem with the main cast and crew windows.... so having that info in 2 places... what am I missing... why do I want it. And replacing the cast and crew sections already used don't work for me as I can't see the cast/crew headshots or click on the names to bring up their other work and such. I hope I am not sounding bad here... I am really just trying to understand it all.
The one thing I do see as maybe a little useful is the additional info field... only problem is I really don't know how much I would actually use it.
I am wondering if I am just not seeing the main use of the plugin. The awards part makes complete sense to me... the new addition. I don't know. Maybe I just don't get the point of it all. Because of that please don't go just by me here. as I really still not 100% seeing the point of what I am looking at.
Who knows... maybe if I could understand it... and actually see it working I would love it. I just can't seem to see it at this point.
-
As it is currently only part of the info and features from CCViewer it may be not fully useful to those not using CCViewer.
In CCViewer you still can see headshots (which are maintained outside of Profiler database) and you can see their other work. Down to episode level.
Depending on other feedback I may go further and make it more useful in the plugin version.
Regarding the additional info: In CCViewer I maintain for example links (Wikipedia, IMDb, link to my review here) and my actual review (which then is automatically integrated into my review template). Of course these would be much more useful if my skin functionality (HTML window which can generate for example the review template using the additional info), SQL queries (with which I generate my monthly and yearly lists of my reviews based on the review links set via additional info and my episode specific watched dates) and a better info display are implemented in the plugin. All of which are further features I would plan to bring to the plugin.
What there is now is just the first step.
Of course if there is no interest in it, I will continue concentrate solely on the CCViewer, which I am mainly using.

Any takers willing to enter them into the plugin?
-
I don't know if anyone else got to the above awards before me... but I just sent it in. :)
-
No, you are the first. I will upload it this weekend.
-
OK... Thanks Tom. :)
Be sure to give credit where credit is due... thanks to Sam... not me.
-
I think both of you deserve credit. Entering it into the plugin is just as much work as collecting it in a different form.
-
I am cool with that... just as long as we don't forget Sam. :)
-
Hey Tom...
Think I am having a problem with the Awards editor. Just out of curiosity I went back to the award I did yesterday... That is when I saw this...
I know for a fact that I made sure I saved the info after putting it all in. And it is showing up in the profiles correctly. But somehow the award I did... the info is missing... the editor is not letting me see the info at all. Any ideas?
So you may want to look at that file I sent you yesterday see if you see any problems.
-
The awards data is okay. It's a bug in the editor. The data is still there. The cause is the apostrophe in the awards name, which results in a wrong search here.
It will be fixed with the next plugin version. Thanks for the heads up!
-
Cool... Thanks Tom!

Tom, thanks for updating this.
I ran an online update of the awards file, but noticed that the "Academy Awards" is not included, and currently I only have through 2009.
Am I doing something wrong?
-
I must have deleted the Academy Awards line accidentally in the list recently. It is now available again.
-
Thanks, Tom!
-
Yesterday, I ran the online update with all award types checked. Now, when I check just the Academy awards I get the following error:
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object"
If I check any other single award type like "BAFTA", it woks fine.
-
Sorry, it should work now.
I had a typo in the new list entry.
-
Working now!
Thanks again Tom for all your efforts on this and your quick response!
