Title: Tom's Time-Travel Movie Reviews
Post by: Tom on January 04, 2008, 08:29:40 PM
Weekend Movie Marathon
Time-travel movies
One of my favorite themes in movies is time-travel. So I decided to watch some time-travel movies this weekend.

The "Back to the Future" trilogy are my all-time favorite time-travel movies. But these will not be part of this marathon as I have recently watched those.

It's not exactly time travel as such, but I can well recommend Frequency. Doesn't seem to be mentioned often, but I really liked it. It's predictable and the ending is very loose, but it's great fun.

I like Fequency. Not sure if it will be part of this marathon though.

Stars:
Jean-Claude Van Damme as Walker
Mia Sara as Melissa
Ron Silver as McComb
Bruce McGill as Matuzak
Gloria Reuben as Fielding

Plot:
In the year 2004, time travel is not only a reality, but an opportunity to alter the past for power and profit. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in the sci-fi thriller that mixes hard-hitting action with awesome special effects, romance and murder. Ron Silver co-stars as Van Damme's cunning adversary in what People Magazine touts "Clever and original, Timecop is a thinking man's movie."

Awards:
Won:
Saturn (1994)  Best Supporting Actress (Mia Sara)
Nominated:
Saturn (1994)  Best Science Fiction Film
Saturn (1994)  Best Special Effects (Gregory L. McMurray)
Saturn (1994)  Best Writing (Mark Verheiden)

Extras:

My Thoughts:
Better than expected when I first bought it (before that I only saw pieces of the spin-off TV series). And the movie has the beautiful Mia Sara in it :)
The futuristic cars (of the year 2004 ) look bad though. The time-travel theme takes a little backseat to Van-Damme's ass-kicking, but not as bad as I feared.

Blackadder: Back and Forth
It's New Year's Eve 1999 and Lord Edmund Blackadder and friends are gathered to celebrate the Millennium. As conversation turns to the future, Blackadder discloses that he has built a time machine - and to prove it works he proposes a wager of £10,000 to anyone who cares to name an historical object for him to collect on his journey through time... Blackadder bids his friends farewell and steps into the time machine and he and Baldrick set upon a journey spanning centuries. ...Will they make it back to see in the year 2000 and what sort of world will they find on their return...

My thoughts:
Great reunion special for Blackadder! Here we again have a chance to see Queenie from Blackadder II. And a chance to see our characters in modern times.

Karen Warren (Travis) is a beautiful hostage negotiator trying to escape a tragic past. But her desperate flight leads to an even greater horror when she finds herself stranded on a deserted highway and at the mercy of a violent psychopath (Belushi) who commits a brutal murder right before her eyes. But this time, Karen gets a second chance. Stumbling upon an isolated research center, Karen meets a brilliant young scientist (Whaley) and discovers a top-secret device that gives her the opportunity to stop the savage rampage 'before' it begins!

My Thoughts:
Decent time-loop movie. Here the characters can travel 20 minutes back in time to try to prevent a maniac (James Belushi) killing other people with at first worse outcome as before. I can recommend it when you find a good bargain. Bad thing is, that the DVD release is quite old and has non-anamorphic picture and no bonus features.

Stars:
Malcolm McDowell as H. G. Wells
David Warner as Stevenson
Mary Steenburgen as Amy
Charles Cioffi as Lt. Mitchell

Plot:
London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write The Time Machine. But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?

From writer/director Nicholas Meyer, Time After Time is a marvelous entertainment of shivery suspense and sly social comment. In modern-day San Francisco, the Ripper (David Warner) finds our violent age to his liking. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) dislikes the brave new world of fast food and television, far from the utopia he envisioned. But he is cheered by the emancipation of women, particularly one irresistible banker (Mary Steenburgen). For mystery, romance and excitement, Time After Time is time well spent.

George Carlin is great as Rufus. "Volle Kanne, Hoschi!" (this is how "Party on, dude!" was translated in the German version and became a catchphrase for a while here in Germany). Alex Winter always reminds me of Michael Schumacher

I love this movie!  It's the first title I thought of when I saw you start this marathon. I didn't want to influence your choices, so I didn't say anything. I'm from San Francisco, so movies filmed here are always a treat. I do know what you mean about her voice though. In my mind, I can still hear her saying "Herbert...Herbert..." over and over.

Well executed time-travel movie which deals with the question, if they should interfere with history or not when given the chance. My Thoughts:
What can I say about this movie? I simply love it! It became my favorite movie of last year. Even though I saw it 3 times during the last 6 months I had to include it in this marathon. I like it how in the beginnings the time jumps are simply played for fun but it gets more serious as the movie goes on. Sadly there is no RC1 release yet, but it is said to be coming this year. I recommend to watch out for it! Also there is a Korean 3-disc release with English subtitles available (the German release has only German and Polish subtitles).

When I watched this movie the first time, I labeled it "For Sale". I never came around to sell it and I wanted to give it another chance now. It seems I do not get the movie. Looks like it will be left with the label.

This was it for this marathon. 14 movies in 3 Days! I think this is a record for me. The following movies were also on my list but will have to wait for another time.

12:01
The Butterfly Effect
The Butterfly Effect 2
Clockstoppers
Grand Tour: Disaster in Time
Millennium
The Time Machine (1960)
The Time Machine (2002)
Timeline

I will continue this marathon on another weekend as I have some further time-travel movies on the way.

Only reading that a movie has time-travel in it, and I am interested. But this leads to a lot of movies that aren't that great. But there is always hope that it is a gem like BTTF and TokiKake (this is how "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" is called by fans for short).

Star Trek was also a good provider for great time-travel stories. This is why I will do a Star Trek Time-Travel Weekend Marathon one of these days. And maybe also a non-Star-Trek-TV-Time-Travel marathon.

You have mentioned this so often now, that I will try to find the DVD in Hong Kong (which has English subtitles too) when I am there in early March.

My thoughts:

No reason...? He was a mean bastard before and needed to relive that one day until he became a good person and fell in love with that chick. They didn't spell out the reason (which is good), but there certainly was one.

I kinda liked it.

Ending a movie like that is always difficult. For some reasons I remember liking the Theatrical ending better than the Director's version, which several people couldn't understand, but I can't recall the difference right now. ...and even if I could, I am sure Tom doesn't want to hear it at this point, I think  Maybe he can refresh my memory after watching it.

My thoughts:
Well executed time-travel movie which deals with the question, if they should interfere with history or not when given the chance. And typical: They lost quite a few crew members but only think of the commander in the end, when they only believe they have lost him. What about the other casualities?  :-\
Oh, missed reading this one before... I remember seeing this in the cinema once and thought it was really cool (I was really young). However, I seem to remember that somehow that ending didn't make any sense at all. Something like, that the dog shouldn't have recognized the guy in the car (if this doesn't make sense to you right now, I probably remembered the ending a little wrong). Anyway, I thought the ending bent the time travel logic too far...(?)

I've always enjoyed anything to do with time travel. Everything from "wow, they did that well" to "they really blew that one". Either way to me it has always been entertaining and fascinating. Almost as much fun as alternate realities to me

Yes, I have seen it before (otherwise I wouldn't have bought the critically dissed Butterfly Effect 2). I really liked the first part (preferrably the DC ending). The second part I do not remember much anymore, so I am not sure if I liked it or not.

I already have alternative realities planned for future marathons: A Star Trek one and one for other TV series.

Yep. There is even a german dvd (http://www.amazon.de/Das-Haus-Meer-Il-Mare/dp/B000PTYO1C/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1199729337&sr=8-1) out there. I don't know how the german dub is though, I got myself this one (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-k/section-videos/pid-1004115203/) which is reasonable cheap considering it's a beautiful digipak 2-dvd+ost discset.

I've never watched Lake House, I already found Keanu Reaves in Sweet November (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0230838/) very dull. He's a good action star and does great comedy, but isn't very good for drama.

It looks like the German DVD has not the original audio track so it is out of the question. I'll probably order it here (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=45872) as this is where I order from on a regular basis.

YesAsia looks like a really great source for R3 movies. Free shipping on a lot of titles if order value higher than $25 and the refund of custom payments if you live in UK or Germany. For US and Canadian customers, you must go to us.yesasia.com instead and I think the shipping options are even better for you.

Here is what I will order:
First order:
Il Mare (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-k/section-videos/pid-1004115203/) (of course)
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-c/section-videos/pid-1004960945/): Really great movie I saw at the AsiaFilmfest. Do not let you distract you by the title, it's misleading. It is not Science Fiction but a quirky romantic comedy.

My second order will probably be (but not now):
Death Note (2 movie set) (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-j/version-all/section-videos/did-160/pid-1004675561/) (Heard a lot of good things about these)

You'll even find my recommendation "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" there. I recommend the Hong Kong version (http://us.yesasia.com/en/prdTransfer.aspx/pid-1005058577/) (US link) for its price (about $15). Even though the Korean release (http://us.yesasia.com/en/prdTransfer.aspx/pid-1005158987/) (US link) has a really nice packaging and 3 discs, the included bonus features do not seem to be really noteworthy.
Title: Re: Weekend Movie Marathon: Time-travel Movies

I've used YesAsia a few times, because Region 3 is great value. Normally their releases are identical to English ones, in some cases better (the best version of Army of Darkness is R3). Also they often have limited edition packaging because it's an incentive against piracy in Asia (I've had Dances With Wolves, Pan's Labyrinth, Band of Brothers and Big Fish in their "Really Cool" editions!). Finally the site is well done so you're able to pick out unusual films that aren't marketed in the West at all (I'm particularly fond of Some and, though I can't say I'm desperate to see it again, 3-Iron was a unique piece of work that I knew nothing about.

In fact one of you may be able to help me. A while ago I looked through the site and was interested in Death Note, plus another. Stupidly I didn't note the title... :slaphead: It was the story that intrigued me and I vaguely remember it as something about a couple that are separated when he is sent to prison. Why, I can't remember, or even, if he was framed. While in prison, his girlfriend is killed (by an accident, I think) and on his release he discovers she was keeping a detailed journal or letters. He reads it and it leads him to... erm... something... Oh dear.  :-[

EDIT: AHA!!! I've found it. Traces of Love (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/section-videos/code-k/version-all/pid-1004604230/). Obviously I was way off on "prison", a bit closer with "accident", and I knew that there was "something" in the way of a twist.

In a complete coincidence it seems to draw comparisons with Il Mare and the description suggests its a time-bending story. How about that then?  :hysterical:

Now you have me slightly confused. :weirdo: If you are descibing the DC there, than it seems that the DC is he one wherehe kills himself, not the one where he alienates the girl to avoid becoiing friends with her.

In that case I would prefer the Theatrical Cut after all, and not the DC. I found that baby doing suicide in the womb just a little over the top... (not that the baby kills itself per se, but it being conscious...)

That was the point I hated too. I saw the DC which had the original ending on the disc and I didn't think that was much better. I suppose within the logic of the film, the baby being concious was almost acceptable, because he has all the memories and a degree of control. It's still a heck of a stretch though.

My main problem with the whole film is it makes little sense and as I mentioned before, it's pointless. His exceptional skill/gift/whatever has one purpose: to prove he shouldn't exist.

Maybe that's why I liked the cut where he just alienates the girl better; didn't feel quite that pointless. He just needed to find out what exactly to do in order to change the outcome.

I am still figuring that one out  Seen it twice so far (Theatrical Cut) and couldn't quite wrap my head around it. Maybe I should see the Director's Cut, as it supposedly spells things out more clearly (while probably inferior for that reason, it might help me understand the whole thing :-[).

I have both versions of Donnie Darko and although I think the theatrical is better, that's only because the director's cut is more obvious. To be fair, I could only fully appreciate the story after seeing the DC.

Karsten, I agree to some extent. Darko is eventually pointless, but it's more enigmatic than Butterfly, better writing and production all round, and the stakes are at least much higher (as revealed by the pages of the book that punctuate scenes in the DC). Plus, like all good films, Darko seems to be trying to say something beyond its story. I think Butterfly just is what it is and I felt let down by it overall. Especially as there were some really cool ideas.

The 2-disc versions have all the book pages from the DC as bonus material and I believe the deleted scenes cover almost everything that was put back in the DC. IMO the only real advantage of the DC is the audio commentary with Kelly and Kevin Smith.
The German theatrical 2-disc set should provide the best picture quality available, and it's fairly cheap too.

My Thoughts:
I always liked this movie. I have seen it a few times in the 90's on German television. There were even two different German dubs. One in standard German, in the other, the actors were dubbed with French accents. This is unusual but I really liked that dub
Now was the first time I had a chance to watch it with the original French sound track.
This movie had a disappointing sequel and a US/French spin-off movie which I haven't seen yet. But I will soon because it was also part of the latest package. But I do not promise myself much from this new movie because I have yet to read a favorable review for it.

I have seen parts of the remake on HBO. While some stuff seemed funny, I definitely recommend to keep expectations low.

Plot:
Just Visiting is one very funny fish-out-of-water comedy the whole family will enjoy. It's 12th century France and the Count Thibault of Malfete (Jean Reno, 'Mission: Impossible') finds his beautiful bride-to-be (Christina Applegate, TV's 'Jesse') done in by malevolent magic. So he and his loyal servant André (Christian Clavier, 'Les Visiteurs') request the help of a local wizard to right the wrong and bring his beloved back. But the wizardry goes awry and the pair is transported to 21st century Chicago where they meet Thibault's descendant Julia (Applegate) and her scheming fiancé. With their timeless values of courage, they wreak hilarious havoc as they foil diabolical plots in modern-day Chicago and try to find their way back home.

My Thoughts:
This is a US remake of the French movie 'Les Visiteur'. It is more of a screwball comedy than the original movie.
Sadly, Jean Reno's character comes across more as a joke than as the excellently played knight of the original movie.

This movie is a yet another in a long line of Hollywood having to remake a movie for the American audience.
The German habit of dubbing movies is often critized by some citing that other European countries like the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries do not have the need to do it, why then Germany? Are the German people too lazy to read subtitles? (It is just that the dubbing industry in Germany has become too big and the people are acustomed to have the movie dubbed).
But on the other hand, when I look at the US: What do they do? Do they dub? Do they subtitling? No, they remake the whole movie instead :hysterical:

On a side note: Jean Remo looked a little like a colleague of mine in this movie

Another movie the Americans had to remake because they do not like movies which they haven't done themselves
It is essentially the same movie as "The Lake House". I liked both. The only real difference is the ending. I prefer the "Lake House" ending but it could be a matter of what you have seen first. Both ending produce a time paradox but I feel that the one in the US version can be explained away whereas with the original Korean ending that is not possible.
I willl probably watch "The Lake House" again soon to refresh my memory and give a better opinion of which movie I find superior.

I have to quote myself here. While posting I read the overview the first time and I noticed this. Seems I have another movie to look out for
As a matter of fact I have another movie in my collection with the same title. It has a similar theme as "Il mare". It was an American TV movie from 1998 where the two main characters corresponded via mail across a time difference of about 100 years.

Originally Il Mare ended right after she puts the letter in the letter-box. The Korean audience however disliked the sad ending during the first screening, therefor the additional scene at the end where the guy actually lives was re-shot.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo kakeru shôjo)
"TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE"
Student girl Konno Makoto has a very bad day. Everything goes wrong and to top it all off in the afternoon she dies in a lethal accident… only she doesn't.

In fact, she finds herself transported a few seconds back in time and manages to avert her deadly fate. As Konno slowly discovers, she has acquired the power to jump back in time and change things at will!
Soon, she starts the whole day over, but this time without errors, only to discover that sometimes her winnings are someone else's losses. Before she knows it she's busy cleaning mess after mess. And when things go from bad to terrible she suddenly finds out there is a limit to her time-jumping, possibly leading several loved ones straight into great danger.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo)

So, I finally had the chance to see this highly praised film (at least by Tom )... First off: :

It was a great mixture (as far as the time-traveling aspect goes) between Butterfly Effect and Groundhog Day. Butterfly Effect as far as the intent of the jumps and their effects go, Groundhog Day for similarities in the the time travel execution; she often travels several times to the past to make small alterations, just like Bill Murray needed to repeat the same day over and over. (At least that's how I felt about that.)

The story is nicely executed and most of the twists and turns were not easily predictable hence had me stunned repeatedly. Also the ending was way different from what I expected, whcih I mean in a very good way; all things I could have expected would have been clichéd. The characters are very likable, as they are introduced properly and given some background to them.

I have no real experience with anime, so this may sound awkward to others: The animation is a mixed bag. Basically held simple it still manages to convey the character's feelings and gtransfer the emoptions to the viewer. Several times I was taken out of the film though, when the animation turned what I call "Heidi"-style (at least the Germans may understand what I mean); Super big mouth while laughing and SUPER big eyes; I can handle big eyes, but SUPER big looks weird. All in all it was well animated though, with sufficient detail in the right spots.

I used to watch a lot of Anime and Manga films. I remember reading that the Japanese consider the eyes the "window to the soul". Therefore good characters have eyes as big as possible (even if it looks ridiculous) while villains have the opposite.

I like the sound of that though. I might look it up, although I still have Grave of the Fireflies to watch will test if I still like the Anime style. ;D

That is also something which disturbed me in the beginning when I started watching anime. These effects are called Face Faults (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_fault). But now I am accustomed to them and even like them.

I learned about the "big eyes" and their meaning a while back already; and having watched a lot of Japan-made children's cartoons (Heidi, Sinbad, Wickie; the last one is some viking kid, don't know his English name) as a kid I was already accustomed to it.

What I find funny is, that to us westerners the big eyes look ridiculously unnatural, yet due to the culture thing the Japanese don't like our cartoons as everybody looks like a villain :hysterical:

I guess as a kid we don't care, we look at the story. Then as teenagers and young adults we feel it looks unnatural and dis it. Then as we get older and more experienced, we start looking at the story again... :slaphead:

Funny, same face faults I can accept without problem, I have difficulties with others. For example the Facefault is usual in the Dragon Ball series (as described in the Wikipedia article). I found it funny. But they only used only once or twice the spiraled eyes and I found it unfitting. In Pokémon (although I never really watched it) they seem to use that regularily.

But I also have to admit, that I never got into any other Manga story except for Dragon Ball. I tried "Rurouni Kenshin", "3x3 Eyes" and "Ranma 1/2" all of which I have several volumes each.

My Thoughts:

I do not really know what to think of this movie. Usually I am quite willing to accept quite a lot suspension of disbelieve when dealing with time-travel stories. But with this movie I cannot be this lenient (probably because it takes itself too seriously). None of this movie's time-travel devices could work. I expect a time-travel movie to set a certain set of rules regarding its time-traveling and then follow them. But I do not have the feeling that in this movie this has been done. They set up the possibility, that changing the past will lead to different future (different to the existing). Spoilers follow: The major flaw in my opinion is, that while traveling back in time and preventing the disaster, he again leaves behind all those hints for his future self to find. But by changing the time, the future will not happen and this is not necessary anymore. A whole new timeline has already started at the point he traveled back in time.
This whole leaving yourself hints behind cannot work in the frame of this story. I feel they mixing up these two timelines too much.

As I said, usually I am not that bothered about time-travel paradoxes (I even like stories which are using the cause-and-effect reversal argument). But here they are screwing it up too much.

I was a bit disappointed with the inner time travel logic, too.

On the one hand they made it look like a time-loop: He has seen things in the future (like the magnets on the fringe) that he will do in the past (but later from his time POV).

On the other hand he does actually change the past when he sends that note.

It doesn't quite add up.
Title: Re: Weekend Movie Marathon: Time-travel Movies

The timeline of the movie is actually his first trip already, meaning when he does the time travel at the end he is actually tavelling the second time (doesn't he reply to the sentence that he is the first human to do that with soimething like "maybe I already did"?). [/spoiler]
(click to show/hide)

The movie is IMO not thought through correctly. It was written by someone, who thought time-travel movies are popular and therefore money-makers. But he simply hasn't grasped the subtleties which make time-travel stories good and consistent within themselves.

Another movie, where this kind of time-traveling is better executed, is Retroactive (one of my previous reviews).

@Tom: exactly.

In the Terminator series there is a similar problem.

Terminator 1 was a time-loop. The picture Sarah made at the end of the movie was the very same Reese brought with him from the future. Reese has always been Connor's father and will always be. Perfect loop.

Then they made part 2. And suddenly the future is changeable. But because they've made that change between two movies it didn't bother me that much.

A few years back I drew a (german) chart about this (Imageshack still has the pictures):

Part 1:

Part 2&3:
(Zeitsprung = time travel)

The problem with this principle of time travel is that it would't work as it was depicted in T2, T3. Assuming it would work at all, one person or one ship could make a jump back and change something (black becomes blue in the second picture). What wouldn't be possible is that another person would make the same time travel "5 minutes later". The moment the first person arrives in the past the black time line goes blue. There is no black time line anymore from which a second person could jump back in time.
I can't remember if the T-800 or the T-1000 jumped first. If it was Arnie, he would have destroyed Skynet and the T-1000 would have never been built in the first place. If the T-1000 jumped first he would have killed Connor and there would be never be a resistance who would send the T-800.

Tom, I thinnk I (almost) understand what your problem with Deja Vu is. maybe I haven't seen enough time travel movies to think that deeply about them or having to resolve my confusion first led to me overlooking the other faults.

I agree with you about T3, it does not create a problem, as at the end it becomes clear that Judgement Day "just has to happen"; I guess to preserve the space time continuum .

I guess Karsten is right though if we look at the alternate ending of T2, where we see Sarah in the future... With the future now changed we could say "where did the robots come from in the first place"? But then we have the theory by Doc Brown about the parallel time line...

My head hurts :stars:

My Thoughts:
An interesting mix of other well-known movies. This movie has similarities with Matrix, Termintor, IndependenceDay, E.T. and others. It reminded me of the German saying "Besser gut geklaut, als schlecht selbst gemacht", which in this context roughly translates to "It is better to rip off well than do it yourself badly".
I especially liked the ending, which tied up the story and time-travel elements nicely.

My Thoughts:
When I began this marathon, I said, that I was not reviewing BTTF because I had recently watched it. But now over a year has passed and it's time to watch one of my favourite movie trilogies again. These movies are my favorite time-travel movies, followed by "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" (which I watched for the sixth time in two years yesterday ).
I just love all the details which went into making of these three movie. Such things like "Twin Pine Mall" is changing to "Lone Pine Mall". Or changes to the city, like the park in the city center changing to a parking lot.

My Thoughts:
It's hard to believe, that this movie trilogy wasn't planned from the beginning as a trilogy. Wouldn't it have been for the change of the actress of Jennifer and the missing return of Crispin Clover, you wouldn't know, that this wasn't planned as a trilogy from day one.
This movie has it all: Travel to the future, an alternative 80s reality and again back to the 50s. I love how the characters crosses paths with themselves from the first movie.
This movie has one of my favorite scene of all three movies. It's the end, where just after the 50s Doc has sent back 80s Marty back to the 80s, Marty is running back to him, with Doc wondering, where he came from, as he just sent him back to the future. And Marty's response, that he came back from the future.

My Thoughts:
Never being a big fan of Western, this movie is my least favorite of the three. But it was just the logical thing to do. We went to the future and the near past. Going to a more distant future would probably result in a bad movie. We saw how wrong they got it with the year 2015 (but interesting, that they assumed much more technological advancement as it really happened. A lot of old movies underestimated techological development when showing a similar distant future). Would would they have done with 2085? So the only good choice left is going 100 years back.
And even though this movie is my least favorite of the three, I still like it very much. Stuff like how the 50s Doc got the clothes wrong for Marty to go back with. Also this movie is the best in regards of showing the friendship between the two main characters. And it is a good conclusion to the trilogy overall.

A modern take on "It's a Wonderful Life" that I enjoyed. The movie dragged a little when Adam Sandler first tries out the power of the remote control, but this is needed to set up the side-effect of it. That part I enjoyed.

On the one hand, I am a bit disappointed about this, because it is just such a Hollywood ending, but on the other hand how did I expect a "It's a Wonderful Life" story to end?
There are also some fun cast to watch. Christopher Walken as the angel. Unexpected surprise is David Hasselhoff, who did a good job playing the boss. Julie Kavner (voice of Simpson's Marge) and Henry Winkler (Fonzie) appear as Adam Sandler's parents. And Kate Beckinsale is really hot in this movie.

Not directly time-travel, but with the protagonists communicating with each other through time and thus affected the history, it counts as a time-travel movie for me.
I liked this film, even though it is not 100% consistent how the changes in the past affect the present. Also it moves a little slowly at times, especially in the beginning.

A romantic comedy on a grand scale, with an ending that will satisfy fans of romance and robot action alike.

My Thoughts:
When buying it, I had no idea that this was a movie with time-travel aspects. Nice surprise :)
I had great fun with this movie. It seemed to touch upon different genres. First it reminds very much of Terminator. Then it goes more in the direction of romantic comedy with a cyborg. Then it moves a little on the dramatic side. Then it gets to be a little disaster movie, and ending with a sci-fi time-travel twist.
After watching the movie I had to draw up the timelines to see if I am satisfied with how the time-travel was handled. After doing it, I am tending to liking how it is handled, even though there are some things you have to take at face value.

P.S. I made the effort to draw up my drawing on my computer and attached it to this post. Of course it is a complete spoiler!

My Thoughts:
After watching "Cyborg She" yesterday, I got in the mood to watch some time-travel movies again. This one is a guilty pleasure of mine. It is a Star Trek/Star Wars parody based on a sketch from the German comedy show "Bullyparade". I think the delivery and editing is really done well in this movie, which make even the bad jokes funny.
With the time-travel device we even got a chance to see characters from Bully's previous movie (a western parody based on Winnetou sketches from the Bullyparade) again.

Interesting idea, but a rather boring movie. Although it has a cheap TV movie kind of feel to it. I am not sure if it is a TV movie though. At least it is in 4:3 format on my release, but again I am not sure if that is full screen or pan & scan.

Strictly speaking, with "Cyborg She" it doesn't work. But the emotions are fitting and I can forgive it. Though I had to draw up a diagram to see how far off they were.

I haven't watched this one for years. It was not as good as I remembered it being, but I still enjoyed it. I watched the "The Director's Cut" because this is the only true version :P
The weak point in this movie is Ashton Kutcher. He can't act. He drags the pacing down.
I almost didn't recognize him with all the makeup, but Ethan Suplee (Randy from My Name is Earl) played Evan's fat roommate in college.

My Thoughts:
For a Nickelodeon movie it is rather fun. For the most part the time-stopping is done well, although they break there own "rules" only to have a "see what funny things we can do when using hyper time". Especially the scene in the night club where there are helping their friend by moving him around. To do these dance sequences they would have to hold him in one position for minutes when considering their speed relatively to the rest. The whole routine should have taken them hours or even days to do. So not so much fun as they seemed to have doing it. Another scene which breaks their rules is the car chase scene where both parties are in hyper-time. Because of an accident, the good guys fall out of hyper-time. But why were also the bad guys suddenly back in normal time?
Other than that I had fun watching it.

I know it's a little stretch to include this in my time-travel marathon, but for me this has a little time-travel movie feeling to it. The fallout shelter is the "time-travel" device. And we have people out of their time in a fish-out-of-the-water scenario.
I always loved this movie. I think it is too bad that Alica Silverstone didn't make more romantic comedies.
This was also the movie that I really took notice of Christopher Walken the first time. He is just fun to watch as Adam's dad.

Plot:
Jonathan Silverman (Weekend at Bernie's, Brighton Beach Memoirs) is Barry Thomas, and Barry is having a bad day... over and over and over again. That's because Barry is caught in a "time bounce" – an atmospheric phenomenon – that occurs when his employer, the high-tech company Utrel, has an experiment that goes haywire. Spared from the effect of memory loss by an electric shock at the moment of the time bounce, Barry is the only one at Utrel who has the power to change the course of fate. My Thoughts:
This TV movie came out the same year as Groundhog Day and has a similar premise. A day repeats itself and only one guy remembers the previous time loops. I always thought this movie was made to profit from the release of Groundhog Day. But now I have read that Groundhog Day supposedly stole the idea from the 12:01 PM short movie which came three years previously, which itself was based on a short story written in the 70s.
Overall I enjoyed this movie even though it has its weaknesses. The main weakness is the lead Jonathan Silverman. I don't like his performance in this movie. Helen Slater on the other hand did a good job with what she was given.

I was just going through the first few pages of this thread to replace some of my old reviews where I only used an overview without any other details with my new review template. Doing this I stumbled across this short review. I remember that I am not the only Marisa Tomei fan here, so I was wondering, if anyone else besides me has seen this movie? I can really recommend it. I even double-dipped after I had trouble reading the first DVD on most DVD drives. It's a entertaining romantic comedy with a time-travel twist.

Well, I don't really think of My Cousin Vinny as a rom-com, but more of a comedy/courtroom drama.  Was there romance going on...sure, but I don't think that was the main theme of the film by any stretch.

This is one of my all-time favorite comedies!  Probably becasue I am a native New Yorker, but have lived in the South for 33 years, so I appreciate both "cultures".

Just reading the pattern of replies I can see why you thought I was including Vinny, but I wasn't. I love that film! No way is it a rom-com. No, I meant Happy Accidents. Tomei got best supporting actress for Vinny and many people think it was a mistake the Academy couldn't admit to. Bollocks. She was captivating in it. Whether she deserved such an accolade, I don't know, but she clearly enamoured the voters as much as she did me!  ;D

This is one of those ridiculous urban myths. When the actor gets the envelope with the name of the winner, the other nominees are not listed. If you look, you can obviously see that he is reading the name as written. And I seriously doubt that Palance even knew who she was at that time, after all, it was one of her earliest performances as a lead.

I also like Marisa Tomei...and you're right about her Oscar win.  I believe there are people at the Oscars who tabulated the ballots and know who should win...and if a mistake is ever made, they will correct it immediately before the show continues.  No, I haven't seen Happy Accidents yet.

In his drugged and disoriented state, Starks' mind propels him into the future, where he meets Jackie (KEIRA KNIGHTLEY), and discovers that he is destined to die in four days. Together, they search for a way to save him from his fate.

An unusual time-travel movie. For the most part it was not my kind of movie, but in the end a quite enjoyed it. Though it still will not be a movie I will watch often.

My Thoughts:
As you probably know, I am a big fan of the anime movie "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". That movie is kind of a sequel to a successful novel from the 60s (the advise-giving aunt in the movie is the main protagonist of the novel). That novel has spawned multiple adaptions in form of movies and TV series. The most famous of those is this movie.
This movie never really clicked for me. Probably because I was expecting more a story like in the anime version. But you can see many parallels between these two movies though.
I just read that there was yet another live-action movie released this year. Can't wait for a DVD release outside of Japan.

Peggy Sue Got Married (1986/United States)

The only part of this film that I liked was when Peggy Sue answers the phone and realizes that she's speaking to her grandmother, who, since Peggy Sue has gone back in time, is alive. The look on Kathleen Turner's face is priceless.

Now, in 2009, Korea is just another state of the Japan Empire and Seoul has become a major city. A Korean resistance group called Hureisenjin is formed to fight for liberty and independence. Two cops, a Japan and a Korean (who denied his heritage) are investigating the actions of this "terrorist" group. And their work lead them to an artifact of the ancient Korean religion of "Sun and Moon"

Extras:

My Thoughts:
Time-travel causes the history to change where Japan was allied with the US and thus on the winning side. This made Japan a big power and it annexed Korea. Set in this alternate reality this movie tells the story about a JBI (Japanese Bureau of Investigation ) agent who gets involved in an investigation against Korean independence fighters.
This movie was okay, although I am still not quite sure if all of it made sense. Not that it was a confusing movie but I had the feeling that the time-travel didn't really quite add up.

When Scotty (Campbell Scott – Dying Young) discovers a poignant letter written by a mysterious woman called Lizzie (Jennifer Jason Leigh – N.Y. Film Critics Award for Georgia), he cannot get her out of his mind. Putting thoughts of his upcoming wedding aside, he is compelled to write Lizzie a letter of his own. A romantic correspondence ensues and flourishes into a love so powerful, not even a century and a half of time can keep them apart. Spanning an era from the Civil War to the present day, the perils of Lizzie's war torn present threaten her safe passage into the future. Would their love be strong enough to endure the test of time?

Extras:

My Thoughts:
The premise is similar to "Il Mare" and "The Lake House". A couple writes letters to each other across time. Except that here there is over 100 years between them instead of just two. This was about the third time that I have watched this movie since I bought it eight years ago. It is nothing special but I enjoy it.
Estelle Parsons, who played Roseanne's mother on Roseanne, appears as the main character's mother.

When an old friend, delivery man Goro (Katsumura Masanobu), gives her some old photos he's found, her memories of her first love, junior high school classmate Fukamachi Kazuo, are re-restrengthened and she determines more than ever to travel back to find him. When Kazuko is suddenly hospitalised by a car accident, Akari offers to go in her place and give Kazuo a message. However, by mistake Akari ends up not at Setagaya Junior High in April 1972 but at Shotoku University's science lab in February 1974. Trying to track Kazuo down, Akari ends up staying with scifi geek-cum-amateur filmmaker Mizorogi Ryota (Nakao Akiyoshi), who believes her story that she's from the future. But Kazuo proves difficult to track down, for reasons Akari is gradually to discover.

My Thoughts:
This is kind of a sequel to the original "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" novel. Like the great anime was. Only this time it's the daughter of the girl from the novel who makes a time jump, not the niece. Also there is only one time jump, when she travels back to 1974. This movie is more like a sequel than the anime was. The anime was more like a spin-off.
I enjoyed this movie, although not as much as I did the anime. Fun fact though is, that the same person who voiced the main character in the anime also stars in this live-action movie as the girl travelling through time.

My Thoughts:
When I first heard about the idea of making a Star Trek prequel movie years ago (the talk was about a Star Trek Academy movie), I was shocked that they even considered something like this. I wanted further TNG movies or DS9 movies. But after the failure of Nemesis and the new Enterprise series, I didn't want any further movies.
When then again came up the topic of a Star Trek reboot movies years later, I was all for it. Now was the right time for it.

Even though I was all for it, I was going into it was some trepidation. The trailer hadn't really convinced me yet. But I was positively surprised by the movie. They managed to make a reboot with the possibility to explore new directions, but they didn't ignore the past movies. Having Leonard Nimoy as the old Spock from the previous timeline's past in it to bridge the gap was the only move which probably could pull that off.

The new cast is perfect. The new Spock is a dead-on young Leonard Nimoy. The new Kirk has the spirit of Shatner's Kirk, but they thankfully chose to not imitade Shatner's delivery style. That would have come across as a Shatner parody instead of a new incarnation of Kirk. Simon Pegg as Scotty was alright as was the other supporting Enterprise crew. The new Bones is the one who surprised me the most. When I first saw him, I did not think that he was right for the role. He didn't look anything like DeForest Kelley. But his McCoy was dead-on.

But the movie also has its problems:
- I didn't like the "Star Wars" sequence on the Ice Planet, where Kirk is chased by a monster which in turn is caught by an even bigger monster. Also it is just too much of an coincidence, that Kirk is jettisoned to only a short walk away from where the old Spock is marooned.
- I didn't like it, that the kid Kirk is driving a vintage automobile. This scene is what bothered me most in the trailer. And the Nokia phone was the most grinchworthy moment in the entire movie.
- I didn't like it, that again the Romulans where the villains (like in Nemesis), but at least it was understandable, because we knew from TNG that the old Spock was involved with Romulans the past few years.
- Overuse of lens flare in the bridge scenes. Is the bridge supposed to be a light show, or what?

Also there are some moments, which bother me a little, but they do count as character flaws and not movie flaws: Like why did they give the charge to the redshirt guy and do not have one themselves? They didn't know who will survive the fall, so they should have planned to have backups. And am I understanding it correctly, that because of the stupidity of the redshirt, Vulcan was doomed?

A few references to past movies, that I remember now while writing the review:
- Kobayashi Maru: We learn in Star Trek 2 that Kirk is the only one ever beating the test scenario. Shatner was also eating an apple telling about it, like Chris Pine did while taking the test.
- The Vulcan school: The computers on which the kids take the tests are similar to the computer Spock did tests on in Star Trek 4
- The "friends" speech by Spock. First spoken in Star Trek 2.
- Spock also chose to not complete the Kolinahr in Star Trek 1.
- Spocks parents where first seen in the TOS episode "Journey to Babel", but were also part of Star Trek 4. His father was also in 6.
- I also got a kick out of Leonard Nimoy declaring "I am Spock" in the movie. Which is the title of his autobiography.
- Old Spock giving Scotty the formula which Scotty would have invented later himself is reminiscent of a scene in Star Trek 4.
- Nero is using the same creatures to extract information from Pike as Khan did in Star Trek 2. Would have been fun though, if we would have gotten an updated "ear-invasion" scene, instead of putting it in the mouth.
- Sulus experiance in hand-to-hand combat is of course a reference to a scene in a TOS episode, where we see Sulu fencing.

My Thoughts:
When I watched this movie the first time, I labeled it "For Sale". I never came around to sell it and I wanted to give it another chance now. It seems I do not get the movie. Looks like it will be left with the label.
Finally got around watching this myself yesterday. I liked how some of the stuff was revealed to the viewer
(click to show/hide)
They touched on the typical time travel question of the paradox. While following all the time travel details of the film can hurt the brain, I liked how the end was rather understandable. The idea with the headphones was great.

The film is very technical about the creation of the machine, which is probably where most viewers will get bored to no end and then never get back into it; it's pretty much the first half of the film! But the film is short and that works a lot in it's favor.

Tom rated it at the time (after repeat viewing...). Not sure if it would hold up repeat viewing, but I rate it after my first watch.

I don't know why I didn't like it. Maybe because of the reason you stated. It takes itself too seriously and it didn't quite work for me. I have to admit, I don't remember much of the movie. I never seemed to get really into it. As you said, the first half can be quite boring.

An interesting TV movie about what if the assassination of JFK was prevented. The movie jumps back and forth between the day the time travellor went back to to warn the president. The alternate present and other part of the alternate reality.

I have stumbled across this movie multiple times. Either because I was looking for Bollywood time-travel movies, or because I was looking up DVD releases with Priyanka Chopra. At first glance this always stood out as a movie which could be fun. But every time I looked up reviews and they were mostly bad, I decided against buying it (it even rates below 3.0 on IMDb).
But after recently watching "Pyaar Impossible!" and really enjoying it, I was in the mood for another Priyanka Chopra movie and I finally took the chance. Sadly I must agree that this movie really isn't any good. It has fairly good production values (which surprised me for Bollywood's first futuristic movie), but the screenplay was really weak. Even Priyanka Chopra couldn't save it for me. She didn't seem to be really into the role. I have seen her bring in wonderful performances (mainly in "Pyaar Impossible!" and "What's Your Raashee?"), so I know she can do better. The male star is a newcomer. The director's son. He very much looks like Hrithik Roshan and sounds awfully close to him. Hrithik Roshan also got his start in a movie shot by his father. So both have these things in common, but while Hrithik Roshan really has a lot of talent, Harman Baweja comes across like a ripoff. What I first didn't notice was, that Harman Baweja was also the star in "What's Your Raashee?" (which was released later). In that movie he was better and didn't come across like doing a Hrithik Roshan impression.
So in short: The movie looks good. Art direction is good. Production design is good. Screenplay is terrible. Good direction is missing. Acting ranges from bad to slightly above average.

Plot:
Lauded short-film director Nacho Vigalondo makes his feature debut with this tense, unstoppable vision of science and natural law gone awry.

Héctor (Karra Elejalde) is relaxing on a lawn chair outside of his new country home, surveying the nearby hillside through a pair of binoculars, when he catches sight of what appears to be a nude woman amidst the trees. Hiking up to investigate, he is attacked by a sinister figure whose head is wrapped in a grotesque, pink bandage. Fleeing in terror, his next actions set in motion a brain-twisting, horrifying chain of events.

Drawing from the best traditions of classic science fiction and crime fiction, TIMECRIMES plays games with the genres and the audience, giving the protagonist a Russian-doll like shell of identities that are shed so often that Héctor can be playing one of any number of whodunit archetypes at any given moment as he becomes increasingly more complicit in the complicated mess that he's trying to fix.

My Thoughts:
The first hour was a straightforward and predictable time-travel movie, but then it got interesting. This movie is a solid time-travel movie where I didn't find any holes in the time-travel aspects.
I just saw that they plan an English language remake for this year. Typical. What is wrong with watching a movie with subtitles?

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this movie. The pacing is similar to Rachel McAdam's other movie I have seen: "The Notebook".
The time-travel aspect has been used well. I didn't notice any obvious mistakes on the writer's part.

Rating:

I have finished reading the original novel this movie was based on. Of course it had a lot of stuff which is missing in the movie. But I think that the movie makers made good choices what to cut and how to present the rest. I was a little disappointed in the book. It is good, but the first half promised a lot of time-traveling. They mentioned how often Clare and Henry will meet in the past (about 150 times) and I thought I will get to read about most of those encounters. But sadly it was not all shown. Only about as often as you saw it in the movie, except for the additional times which included story lines cut from the movie. About halfway through there wasn't any time-travel at all anymore and was all mostly about them trying to conceive a child.
Recently I watched the movie again, and I really enjoyed it again the second time around. This made me buy the book. I cannot understand why the movie has such bad reviews. What I often have read is that it is too confusing. Strange that people always have problems when the story is told in a non-linear timeline.

Someone is intent on hunting them down, one by one. And Jess unknowingly holds the key to end the terror.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
An interesting time-travel thriller. It can be confusing because this movie has two distinct time-loops interacting with each other. And also the time-loops can differ slightly in each repeat. The main character who relives these time-loops has only lost the memories of previous loops (instead of here being completely "reset") and has deja vu feeling.

Bunty has never really understood why his parents got married and what stops them from getting divorced. Desperate to save his parent's marriage and his own love life. Bunty embarks on the most challenging journey of his life - by stealing his prospective grandfather-in-law's time machine right before his eyes! To rewrite Kishen and Mala's destiny and alter their disastrous arranged marriage into a romantic affair of the hearts.
Action Replay is a comedy rollercoaster that takes you back on a time machine to the good old 70s where a son plays Cupid to his own parents - and redefines generation gap!

Extras:

My Thoughts:
The basic story reminds of Back to the Future. A guy is travelling back in time to get their parents to fall in love with each other instead of having a loveless arranged marriage with each other.
The movie is rather silly and not very convincing. But I had fun overall. Especially towards the end when his father started to grow some backbone I enjoyed it. It's not telling of the kind of humor the movie has otherwise, but it must have the first fart joke I remember seeing in a Bollywood movie. I had to laugh because it was so unexpected.

Each time he returns to the train, Colter has just eight minutes to uncover the bomber's identity. The more he learns, the more convinced he becomes that he can prevent the deadly blast from ever happening – unless time runs out first.

Extras:

My Thoughts:
A mix between Quantum Leap (it even has Scott Bakula in a voice cameo) and Groundhog Day, which keeps you interested. The acting was good, especially by Jake Gyllenhaal.
Although I think the title is stupid. It's like they wanted to call the machine The Matrix (which would have made more sense) but couldn't and had to find another computerish title.

I could have told you, that it's not really about time travel. Different dimension which looks like a different era, more likely.

The comparison to Donnie Darko is quite good, I have to say. It has a similar warped mind-set, although I'd say it's even more warped in the end...

They all have to do with the time-travel gene that is passed down in the family. Everyone is certain that Gwen's cousin Charlotte has the gene, and so everything is all Charlotte, all the time. Until the day Gwen, out of the clear blue sky, suddenly finds herself in London at the end of the 19th century. She knows right away that she, and not Charlotte, was born to be a time traveler - even if she could certainly do without it. Just as she could do without Charlotte's arrogant boyfriend Gideon de Villiers, with whom she now has to forge an alliance in order to clear up the biggest secret of her family history. One thing is clear: she will do everything possible to solve the ancient mysteries. What isn't clear is that one should not fall in love between the times. For that really makes things complicated!

My Thoughts:
I haven't read the books. I didn't know anything about it before going in. I just stumbled across it, because it is a time-travel movie. I enjoyed the first half of the movie, but I got bored with the second half. As it is the first part of a trilogy, there are also still a lot of questions left open.

My Thoughts:
With this TV movie I am now concluding my classic Doctor Who watching. I have now seen all incarnations of the Doctor.
This movie was a pilot for a revival series which was not picked up. I have to say that I am glad about this, because the 2005 revival is much better. Except for a few nice scenes I found the movie rather boring. But it was nice to see that they have given the doctor better production values than in the old series.

The following is how I currently rank the doctors. Though you have to consider that I only saw a few episodes each for the classic doctors.

1) Eleventh (Matt Smith)
2) Ninth (Christopher Eccleston)
3) Tenth (David Tennant)
4) Third (Jon Pertwee)
5) Seventh (Sylvester McCoy)
6) Fourth (Tom Baker)
7) Second (Patrick Troughton)
8 ) Fifth (Peter Davison)
9) Sixth (Colin Baker)
10) First (William Hartnell)
11) Eighths (Paul McGann)

My favorite classic doctor is the third one (Jon Pertwee).

Well except for being wrong about the order of Doctors <G> I have to agree on your reasoning for it not being picked up earlier.

As they say "You never forget your first Doctor" .. or your preferred one

I don't know how I would rank the Doctors.  I like 9, 10, and 11...I like 4 from when I saw episodes years ago.

So far I have seen a little with the first three...I like them too.  Guess I'm a bit indecisive about this...hmm...maybe 4 and 10 for favorites..  ack.  I can't decide.

My Thoughts:
It has been a long time since I last saw this movie. I know that it has a bad reputation, but I like it.The acting isn't the best, but I think it is an enjoyable movie. I like the reason why he cannot change the past to save his fiancé.
What I find strange is, that IMDb trivia says that the time machine in this movie was the most expensive prop in a movie ever up to that point. I cannot fathom this, except if the machine was build with real gold and diamonds.

I remember liking that too. Isn't that a plot thread that was missing from the older film (with Rod Taylor)? In fact I also quite liked the film for the most part, except "that ending"...

Yes, this plot thread was not in the old movie. And also not in the book.

I have always enjoyed this version.  Maybe because to me it does a better job of the period.  Don't get me wrong, the George Pal version was great.  Seeing it as a young man it really was one of the things that drove me towards SciFi (not syfy sic) and Fantasy.  Of course the new version seems more polished etc .. let's face it filming has come a long way in 42 years (imagine how Pal would have done now).  But I always felt the new version carried the book storyline pretty well.  Little bits out .. little bits back in.

And for time travel lovers it does add the bit of questions about what can happen when trying to 'right a wrong'.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed the first two movies. So of course I wanted to watch this final installment at some point. But I treaded it a little, because most movies, which get a sequel decades later are not good.
But I was pleasently surprised. It worked in this movie. I really enjoyed watching Bill & Ted again. And I think it is a good conclusion to their story.

Because of the premise about music? Then you shouldn't avoid it. It can be enjoyed even if the protagonists want to be successful as musicians.

Dabei verändert er versehentlich die Zukunft. Wird das ultimative Opfer ausreichen, um das UNiversum wieder in Ordnung zu bringen?

My Thoughts:
Even though I am not a big fan of Ezra Miller's Flash, I was excited for this Flash movie since it was announced. And that the topic is the Flashpoint storyline. Then when other movies in the "Snyderverse" failed, I feared that it will be cancelled. Luckily it was not. And when even the new DC movie head James Gunn, who wants the movies abondon the Snyderverse and start fresh, said that the movie will come (even with all the bad press that Ezra Miller caused) and that cut of the movie he saw is really great, I got my hopes up high. But then it flopped at the cinema and the reviews were rather mixed.
Still I had hopes for it. I my expectations were met. I really liked this movie. I think it may even the best one of the DCEU movies. Maybe even better than Wonder Woman and the first Shazam. I was spoiled for most of the surprise cameos, but I was suprised that Ezra Miller had a dual role of playing two Flashs. Our Flash and a younger vesion of him from an alternate timeline. And that they share screentime most of the time. Really done well and really great acting by Ezra.
Now I am sad, that it flopped and we probably will not see another Flash movie. But it was a great conclusion for the Snyderverse, even though two movies come after it.
