Title: "The Movies From Within My Lifetime" Discussion Thread
Post by: Achim on March 23, 2011, 06:17:10 AM
I thought we should have a separate discussion thread, as usual, especially to keep Pete's thread (where discussion is at now) cleaner. Here everyone can post a list of what they watch as we go along and, if a separate review thread exists, link to there. Or just discuss things otherwise...

The marathon rules are simple: Just watch a movie for each year of your life, starting with the year you were born (you can cheat on that one ) all the way to 2011. Some people may do it in sequence, others might decide to go randomly. No timeframe is set, although Pete suggested he wants to finish before the end of 2011.

I will use this post to show my list:

I plan to start my marathon with a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor who died today, by watching A Place in the Sun.

Achim, shouldn't this be the "discussion thread" and have a 2nd thread for only the movie lists?
I was wondering about that :bag:

Then I thought, once everyone has the list on page 1, maybe 2, the discussion can be in the same thread...

Does it matter that my thread has a slightly different title?  I call mine "The Movies Of My Life" which is what I was calling it the first time I started it...and I like that title.

Looks like I could go back as far as 1925 unbroken.  And with only 5 additions from my wishlist, to 1912.

Much farther than my own birth year (1975).  Maybe I should do "Movies From Within My Mom's Lifetime" since she'll be watching them too... that'd take us as far back as 1946...  nah

I like this idea.  May have to consider doing it myself.  I have enough movies to cover me all the way back to 1926 I believe.  But it would also be fun to see what the big movies were for a particular year and see if there are any new titles I'd like in my collection. ;D

It's because you don't choose the good one :P

1969 - Nightmare in Wax would have been a better choice
1971 - Even the cut version of The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave would have been a better choice
1973 - The cover scream bad movie (and most of those Rhino DVD are). Messiah of Evil is awesome, but the release you own doesn't give justice at the beauty of this movie. Try to get the Code Red release you will see one of the most beautifull horror movie ever made.

One advice for 1974 : Don't watch Curse of the Headless Horseman nothing happen in this film

EDIT:
"they" being the Polish Brothers, of course.

Help needed!

Preparing my "Lifetime Marathon" I found that two years are not represented in my collection yet.
These are 1969 and 1973.
I'm hoping for recommendations.

For '69:

The Wild Bunch
Easy Rider
Midnight Cowboy
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

And bloody loads for '73!:

The Sting
Badlands
Enter The Dragon
American Graffiti
Mean Streets
The Wicker Man
The Long Goodbye
Don't Look Now
THE EXORCIST!!!

 :training:

Wild Bunch and The Exorcist would be my choices. But Don't Look Now or Wicker Man are a bit special...

Any of those suggestions for '69 would be great.  That's also the year that the original The Italian Job came out or Paint Your Wagon if you want to hear Clint Eastwood sing.

I love The Wicker Man.  Also out in '73 was Live and Let Die if you want a Bond film, Disney's Robin Hood, and the sci-fi cult classic Soylent Green.

For '69: Ma nuit chez Maud (Rohmer). Antares wrote about it recently. Also True Grit. While not particularly noteworthy, it makes for a nice comparison to the recent Coen version.

Oh, and for 1973, let me add Welt am Draht (Fassbinder). One of the best science-fiction movies ever was actually made in Germany. Even if you are not into Fassbinder, this is a must-see.

I agree that Welt am Draht is worth seeing.

My picks from Jon's list (all good choices...) would be The Wild Bunch and The Wicker Man.

Have this on my radar.
Sadly in Germany this seems not to be available with the original aspect ratio (1.85:1) but only in in 1.78:1. Not a big difference, but a difference.

Thanks for all the help.
I didn't even know that so many outstanding films were made in this two years.
For '69 I think I'll go for "The Wild Bunch" or "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid"
For '73 it seems I'd have to get the whole list. Thanks to Genevieve for reminding me of "Soylent Green", haven't watched it for ages.

For some reason I always shied away from Fassbinder, even though I really like "Angst essen Seele auf".
I think I'll give "Welt am Draht" a Go. It sounds extremely interesting and seems to be the ancestor of "The Matrix" and "The 13th Floor"

I don't know if I will make it... but I am hoping to watch at least 3 more movies today. That would put me into the '80s. And that is a decade I am looking forward to... as that is the decade that I first got started with my fascination of watching movies. Especially towards the mid '80s.

I've only managed to get one done....and I still have to start my list and write about it here.

I can see it how...you'll be done and I'll still just be on like the 4th movie..and I won't finish until 2015 or something.   :hysterical:

Not sure I can do it... but my goal is 5 movies today... which would bring me into the '90s!

I made it!  And this also marks my half way point through the entire challenge!  :yahoo:

:hmmmm: I wonder if I can get up to the year 2000 watched by this weekend. To do it I would have to watch 8 movies within the next 3 days.
Title: Re: "The Movies From Within My Lifetime" Discussion Thread

I only have 10 more movies to go. There is no way I will finish it this weekend... but that is ok. My goal is to complete this challenge by the end of the month. That way I can just concentrate on my Birthday marathon through-out next month. So I have 8 days (including today) to watch 10 movies.

And I've still only gotten one watched.
Well I could make a few others work...if I do the list out of order.

Well there is no rules set for the order... so why not? I personally prefer doing it in order myself. But that don't mean you have to!

and you should start with The Dorm that Dripped Blood since I'm always curious to know if a film was appreciated or not when the purchase decision had a little something to do with one of my review

I watched Once Upon a Time in the West. I tried to write a review but just couldn't find the write words. It looks beautiful (on Blu-ray even more so) and just in general I enjoy watching Leone's style. Beyond that I don't really know what to say... One of my favorite films. Besides, if I don't start adding films to the list without reviewing them I won't finish until the end of the year

Also added:
Relentless (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,7224.msg144636.html#msg144636)
I believe this was recommended by KinkyCyborg and I am very glad I picked it up :thumb up:

Added Elvis (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,7224.msg144974.html#msg144974) [1979]

Now that 2011 is almost over... who here is up to (attempt?) doing this for 2012? Obviously none of us have any titles for 2012 yet... but that is where allowing ourselves the entire year fits in. I would think all of us would have at least 1 2012 title in our collection before the year is over.

So what do you say? Anyone with me this year? Give it another go? I, myself doubt I would do it nearly as quickly as I did last year.

If a group of us do it again this coming year... maybe we can get a main thread pinned so people don't forget about it as easily as they did this year.

Can I just continue the previous one...? :bag: It's not like numbers have changed, there will simply be one more to do :D

I had fourteen done, so not really that much that I couldn't start over, but the existing failed attempt wll bug me for a while. Hmmmm, maybe I can finish that one and attempt another? Only about 70 movies in total, although 70 reviews is a lot for me...

I will give it another try.  I only did a couple films the first time and never got back to it.  Of course, counting 2012 I would have to do 61 reviews!  :o.

That cones to 5 reviews a month plus a sixth review one month...whew!

Well I was born in 75 and have also just about moved to radio 2. Coincidence we should both consider doing this now. Is it an age thing? Or because Radio 1 has nosedived into pure shite over recent weeks? I think the latter. I mean, I heard Fearne Cotton doing a Christmas party thing and she assured listeners three times that the photos of the mince pies would be online soon, like it was the most important thing ever. Then I heard Greg James asking people whose relationships had broken up over Christmas to ring up and karaoke Adele's Someone Like You down the phone. And don't get me started on Chris bloody Moyles. I used to like him but he is such a selfish spoilt twat.

tbh, I only listen to the radio in the car, or sometimes when working but I cannot stick Cotton or Mills. I love Sara Cox and Jo Whiley but ho hum. Vine is actually really good on R2.

+1 for Cox. She's brilliant. Add are the night time lot. Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and others. Often I don't like the music but they make me respect it.
