Title: October 2008 Horror Marathon for the rest of us
Post by: Achim on October 01, 2008, 05:16:20 PM
This thread can be for the more casual "runners", like me, who simply run along with Pete and want to list what they have watched.

My personal target will be to reach around 26, incl. TV episodes.

I'm not going to try for 31 as I know I will not make one a day. I will be traveling for at least 4 days this month. Since I stole Achim's formatting I just keep his number too

OK - the "traveling for 4 days" thing didn't work out. I've beem on the road for 3 days now and won't be home with my DVDs till the 26th. >:(

Looks like I'm all but out of this...   I really wanted to watch the old school horror collection too. Hopefully I get some in. Where I am staying there are about 250 movies. All from 1985 and newer. From what I've seen not much to pick from.

Half-way mark of the October marathon, how are we all doing?

I'm at 10 movies watched in 14 days. At that rhythm, I don't think I'll make it to 31, but, I'm still quite happy with this result. I mean, these 10 movie in 14 days are already 10 movies more than what I watched in the last 2 months!!

Hope you're all still enjoying your marathons, I know I'm enjoying mine! (and I've been making some good watching choices hehe)

I have the funny feeling I missed to mark one as Watched in DVD Profiler and accordingly it's missing form the list, I have 11 now and will very likely not get up to the expected 26. There is a couple of birthdays coming up and, even more time consuming, a bunch of cool new games are being released throughout October. Well, maybe each time I played two hours of "Dead Space (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/850/850400.html)" I should mark it down for one watched movie

I'm up to nine movies so far.  Of course a few I've watched aren't exactly traditional horror...but I like to watch them around Halloween so I counted them. :)

Just updated my list, and I realize somehing: there's very big chances this marathon will spill into November for me.

It's already the 18th of October, and there's still so many movies I wanted to watch for this: Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, Scream, The Evil Dead movies... There's so many classic I wanted to see, that I will obviously not have time to watch before the end of October!

And then, there's the ones I've bought, and have yet to see for the first time: Friday the 13th, Doom, Darkness, Dead Heat, All the Romero zombie movies I have, Cloverfield, The Descent, High Tehsion, Hostel II, Saw IV, Hannibal Rising, Constantine, The Hitcher, etc. etc. etc. (wow, never realized I had that many horror movies! And I keep saying I don't really like horror... guess that's not entirely true!)

Well, one thing's for sure, I will not pull a "Supermarket", I won't start watching Christmas movies on Nov.1st (yeah, I know, Americans have Thanksgiving in between, we don't in Canada). Might as well keep watching horror!

I have seen it before.  This was probably about the 4th time I've seen it.  I love it.  I remember when the movie came out and the previews freaked me out so much that I had no intention of ever seeing it.  Then a few years later I came across the movie on tv late one night and started watching not knowing what it was.  I ended up getting the DVD not long after that if I remember right.

The movie has a good mix of humor with the scary, something that doesn't always work.  I liked how the ghosts were handled and thought they looked cool.  It has a good amount of suspense and I didn't think it was predictable at all.  Great movie all around.

Exactly what I think. I mentioned the same thing when reviewing An American Werewolf in London for the horror marathon. I did say that Shaun of the Dead is an excellent comedy-horror, but it's far more comedy than horror and a serious bit towards the end doesn't really work. I forgot about The Frighteners. Which is especially bad because I have it in a boxset with American Werewolf and Shaun... :-[

I was wondering the other day if people still look at these lists.... Nice to see they do :D

Well, I am not so sure I'd call Psycho a horror classic myself (more a Suspense/Thriller), but people who kill are indeed "monsters".

I've heard and read a lot of good things about Shaun of the Dead but I haven't seen it.  I probably will at some point.
I also thought that Slither had  a decent blend of humor with the horror stuff.  I still need to add that one to my collection.

I love Slither! It's my favourite quotable horror after From Duck Till Dawn. Although most come from Nathan Fillion, this often comes to mind: "Did you see that? I ain't never seen anything like that! And I watch National Geographic all the time!"

I did say that Shaun of the Dead is an excellent comedy-horror, but it's far more comedy than horror and a serious bit towards the end doesn't really work. I forgot about The Frighteners. Which is especially bad because I have it in a boxset with American Werewolf and Shaun... :-[

I saw Slither because Nathan Fillion was in it.  I loved him in Firefly and Serenity.  I'm still ticked about FOX canceling that show.  Anyway, I had heard that Slither was good, but the main reason I watched it was because of him.

I don't like some horror...I have come to like more in the last several years.  I am terrified of snakes and freak if I see a picture or see one in a movie, so I avoid all movies with snakes or snakelike creatures for the most part.  I don't know why, but the ...things in Slither didn't bother me at all.

I first saw Psycho II on television several years ago.  I wasn't expecting much, but I actually ended up really liking it.  I thought the idea of Norman going home after so many years was very interesting.

I ended up picking up Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer after reading a few good reviews of the movie since I thought it sounded interesting.  A few scenes seemed a tad slow, but I enjoyed it overall.

I've seen Scream several times now and I still enjoy it.  There were likable characters - though one or two did irritate me - and I thought the plot was interesting and entertaining.  I remember being very surprised by how things worked out when I first saw the movie.

Yes, I fully admit that Love at First Bite is corny, but I still enjoy it.  I think it was actually one of the first vampire movies I ever saw, so that may be why I still like it.

Not my thing, I'm afraid! But on that score, the female vamps are seriously gorgeous. Plus it has the best looking actress around in Kate Beckinsale. So it does have some impressive assets...  :P :drooling:

By the way you may come to notice that the :drooling: icon is probably the most overused here...  :hysterical:

I think this was the first time that I watched all of Halloween.  I had heard about the movie for years and knew who Michael Myers was, but I didn't see the movie until like...hmm..3 or 4 years ago when AMC was showing it during their Halloween monster fest thing.  I had been thinking I saw all of the movie then, but now I'm not sure since there were things I didn't remember.  Anyway..I did enjoy, though a few of those characters annoyed me.

Halloween II wasn't as good as the first movie, but I still thought it was a decent sequel.  I liked that there were some explanations for what was going on.
I have heard that a lot of people didn't care for Halloween III at all.  It was kind of odd for it to be a Halloween movie and not have Michael Myers in it, but I understood the idea Carpenter had of telling different Halloween stories in the future movies.  Taken on its own, it isn't a bad movie and had a unique idea with for the plot.

The Addams Family really isn't scary, but I still like watching it around Halloween.

I might get another 2 or 3 in tonight.  Right now I'm at 37.  That's way more than I've watched in October previously, though there are still others I wanted to get in this month.

This was the first time that I've seen The Mist.  I did really like it overall, though there were a few things I didn't like as much.  The case claimed the ending was really shocking and it was, though not in the way I was thinking.  I'm not even sure how to describe it right now.  It was very ..intense and I felt like a change of pace after watching it..so I put in the happy and fun loving Sleepy Hollow.  :lol  Sleep Hollow was the first horror movie I got and one of the first DVDs I got and I have a tradition of watching it every year within a day or two of Halloween.
Since I got Slither earlier this week, I decided I had to fit in as well.  I love Fillion in this movie..he cracks me up.  I like all the Scream movies, though this third one is probably my least favorite.
