Title: Weekend Movie Marathon: Time Travel
Post by: addicted2dvd on November 11, 2010, 11:43:02 PM
Weekend Movie Marathon
Time Travel
This weekend I decided to watch some time travel movies. I find time travel interesting... but not something I see watching often... as it is something I normally have to be in the mood for. But as soon as our good friend Tom mentioned Time Travel in my theme suggestion thread it just clicked for me for this weekend. I recently watched all the Star Trek movies... so probably won't be watching the time travel Star Trek movies this weekend. But they are listed below with the rest of my time travel movies.

In between every movie I will be watching an episode of the '66 TV Series Time Tunnel

My Time Travel Movies:
- Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
- Austin Powers in Goldmember
- Back to the Future
- Back to the Future 2
- Back to the Future 3
- Cave Girl
- Donnie Darko
- Escape from the Planet of the Apes
- Freejack
- A Kid in Aladdin's Palace
- The Lake House
- Star Trek (2009)
- Star Trek: Voyage Home
- Star Trek: Generations
- Terminator
- Terminator 2
- Terminator 3
- Time Machine (2002)
- Time Travelers (TV Movie)
- Twelve Monkeys
- Planet of the Apes (1968)
- Planet of the Apes (2001)
- Warlock

Maybe... IMDB claims Time Travel (Would you consider this Time Travel? I either don't remember enough about it or haven't seen them yet.)
- 13 Going on 30 (Kinda see it... she has a birthday in the '80s birthday wish to be 30... wakes up the next morning inside her 30yr old self. No longer in the '80s)
- The Family Man
- Galaxy Quest (enough being just an extremely short clip? I wouldn't think so)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Land of the Lost
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- Lost in Space
- Stargate
- Unholy

No... they are just all the movies I own that I can choose from. I usually get in between 6 and 10 movies within a 3 day weekend (Fri-Sun).

My Thoughts:
This is one of my favorites from the '80s. Though I will admit that cable showed this movie so much in the late '80s and early '90s that I got sick of seeing it. Thankfully by the time the DVDs came out it was so many years since I saw it I was once again wanting to see it and was quick to get the DVDs. If there was one downfall to this movie for me personally it is all the music used. I know most people probably love every minute of the music. But hey... what can I say... it was a bit too much for my taste. But even with that said this is still an excellent movie. I really enjoyed all the characters... especially Marty and Doc Brown. I also liked that through-out the trilogy they really paid attention to the details... making even small references to the town from movie to movie. They really made sure to make this a fun movie.

(http://www.invelos.com/mpimages/02/024543222798f.jpg) (http://www.invelos.com/images/DVDLogo.png)The Time Tunnel: Volume One
FROM THE CREATIVE GENIUS OF IRWIN ALLEN ("Lost in Space," "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," The Poseidon Adventure  and The Towering Inferno) COMES ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND ORIGINAL SCI-FI SHOWS OF THE 1960s!

"THE CONTROL OF TIME IS POTENTIALLY THE MOST VALUABLE TREASURE THAT MAN WILL EVER FIND."
Or so believed the scientists of Project Tic Toc. Located beneath the Arizona desert, the ten-year project's focus is the feasibility of time travel. But when the government reconsiders the project, the scientists have only 24 hours to prove their untested "Time Tunnel" will actually work. Determined to save the project, Dr. Tony Newman and Dr. Doug Philips go through the tunnel—and quickly find themselves catapulted from one historical event to another, barely escaping with their lives as their colleagues back in Arizona race to figure out a way to bring them back home.

Episode Watched:
REIGN OF TERROR
Tony and Doug land in Paris in the middle of the French Revolution and are rescued by a storekeeper who believes they have come to help free Marie Antoinette.

My Thoughts:
An alright episode..., definitely not one of my favorites. But that could have something to do with the time it was set in. Even when studying this period back in school I had little to no interest in this particular period in time. It was never anything that kept my interest for some reason.

I would be curious to hear your thoughts on Donnie Darko and Terminator 3. Though I am not sure if you would enjoy Donnie Darko. Which version do you have? Personally I have never seen the director's cut.
Also what do you think of the Planet of the Apes remake. Personally I liked it. For which I already got a little flak here.  :P
And also Galaxy Quest is a really great movie. Though I wouldn't consider it a time-travel movie. Maybe for the next unwatched movie marathon?

My Thoughts:
Once this movie gets going... there is no stopping it. 1955...1985...2015... back and forth. There is a lot of time travel in this movie! Not to mention alternate realities. I really liked how they handled it all. I do wish they didn't have to change the actress that played Jennifer... not that I didn't like Elisabeth Shue because I definitely did. I just prefer to see the same cast playing the characters whenever possible. Over-all I really enjoyed this one... just as much as the first one!

I watched Donnie Darko once before... actually had a little trouble following it so do need to see it again. I have this one...

(http://www.invelos.com/mpimages/02/024543036401f.jpg) (http://www.invelos.com/images/DVDLogo.png)Donnie Darko
In the tradition of STIR OF ECHOES and FINAL DESTINATION, DONNIE DARKO is an edgy, psychological thriller about a suburban teen coming face-to-face with his dark destiny. Jake Gyllenhaal leads a star-filled cast (including Drew Barrymore, Noah Wylie, Jena Malone, Patrick Swayze and Mary McDonnell) as a delusional high school student visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past and deadly predictions for the future. This "excitingly original" (Entertainment Weekly) nail-biter will keep you on the edge of your seat until the mind-bending climax.

I watched Terminator 3 once when I first got it... but really don't remember it too well. I also watched Planet of the Apes remake as well... I remember enjoying it... though been so long I really don't remember much else. :P

I also seen (and enjoyed) Galaxy Quest... I just couldn't remember the time travel in it.

Pete, I would definitely consider Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban time-travel. In the second half of the film there is a lot of traveling back and forth and just in general messing with time.

I seem to have so much stuff dealing in one way or another with time travel I could do this marathon a couple more times easily. I really should make a time travel tag in profiler to help me keep it in mind and for easy access for next time. I just remembered another one that will fit...

(http://www.invelos.com/mpimages/03/031398680536f.jpg) (http://www.invelos.com/images/DVDLogo.png)A Kid in Aladdin's Palace
The kid is back!

The unlikely hero of "A Kid in King Arthur's Court" is back to give history a jump start... again!

This time, Calvin Fuller (Thomas Ian Nichals) is mistaken by the wise-cracking, ultra-hip Genie (Taylor Negron), as "The Deliverer". Only "The Deliverer" can save Aladdin and all of Arabia from Aladdin's evil brother, Luxor. Unfortunately, Calvin has never delivered anything more than pizza!

When the Genie takes Calvin back in time to Bagdad, he realizes he's in for another wild ride! Calvin teams up with Ali Baba and the beautiful princess for an adventure full of action, mystery, and magic in this fun-filled movie the whole family will love!

So I need to add it to my list also. It is a shame I don't have the first one to go with it.

SECRET WEAPON
When a scientist, claiming to have constructed a time tunnel ten years earlier, offers his services to General Parker, Tony and Doug are sent back to 1956 to investigate.

My Thoughts:
This episode I enjoyed quite a bit. I liked the storyline a lot... I especially liked how they never made it completely clear what country they were in... they gave an exact time... and an approximate place. And in my opinion that was enough. I also liked how they were so close to home... only 10yrs off. I must admit I am excited about the next episode. At the end of each episode they show clips of the next one. And in the next episode they are there for the assassination of President Lincoln. That should make for a good episode.

My Thoughts:
I wouldn't say this is my favorite Back to the Future movie... but it is a lot of fun. I really liked the addition of Mary Steenburgen to the cast. She did a fine job fitting in... I also know her from the TV Series Joan of Arcadia which I also enjoyed a lot. I have to admit though... even though it was good see what Dr. Brown was up to after Marty made it back.... I didn't care too much for the flying steam engine. I mean it would have been one thing if they didn't make it fly.... but in my opinion the flying part just was a little too far fetched (not story-wise mind you) it just didn't look right the way it took off. So I didn't care too much for that. But over all a fun movie and nice conclusion to the trilogy.

Back to the Future Part 3 is actually my favorite of the trilogy...of course, that may have something to do with the fact most of it takes place in the Old West which is my favorite genre.  The flying train never bothered me since it only takes up 10 to 20 seconds of screen time at the very end.  I also like Mary Steenburgen...this isn't her only time travel movie, of course...she was also in Time After Time (I think that's the title).  I also enjoy her as Steve Martin's wife in Parenthood.

My Thoughts:
Ok... what did I think of this remake? While it is a remake... I think it is really a different type of movie then the original. It only takes the basic idea... but this one goes more into the action movie direction then the original one did. I like it for what it is... I enjoyed all the visuals. I also enjoyed the story. But I don't think I would say it is better or even quite as good as the original.  I like it almost as much though... only for different reasons. This is just a fun blockbuster type movie. Not something that will ever be considered close to the classic that the original one is. One thing I am not sure how I feel about is the ending. Not sure it really worked for me personally. But that is ok... over-all I still enjoyed it for the most part.

The tme travelers land at the Alamo on March 6, 1836, just nine hours before the famous fort falls in one of the most renowned battles in American history.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode. I really liked the story they put together for The Alamo. While Jim Bowie was in the episode quite a bit... you only got to see him use his famous knife skills briefly towards the end of the episode. Before that I was thinking they wouldn't show him with his knife in this episode at all. But I definitely enjoyed this episode. I am just not so sure about the next episode that they previewed at the end of this one.

When the Genie takes Calvin back in time to Bagdad, he realizes he's in for another wild ride! Calvin teams up with Ali Baba and the beautiful princess for an adventure full of action, mystery, and magic in this fun-filled movie the whole family will love!

My Thoughts:
Next I wanted something lighthearted and fun. This was recently given to me so figured I would check it out. As you can tell by the plot... this is a sequel. I normally prefer to see movies in order... but thought I would make an exception. I did watch the trailer to both the first one and this one before watching the movie though. It is a cute and fun movie... had a few chuckles in it for me. So is definitely worth checking it out. Though the movie is aimed more towards kids in the lower teens.

NIGHT OF THE LONG KNIVES
Tony meets Rudyard Kipling after he and Doug materialize just before a battle between British troops and Afghanistan tribes in which the future of India could be determined.

My Thoughts:
This one I enjoyed... but not quite as much as the previous two. It is funny that after watching A Kid in Aladdin's Palace... that this one has to deal with Tony and Doug in the deserts of India. But for what it is... it is good. I don't know... I think my mood is starting to shift a bit. Though I would like to fit in one more movie and one more episode before the day is over... if I am lucky. Though I must admit the next episode, which I believe deals with Nazis, I am definitely not looking forward to. As that is one of my least favorite subjects. But it is the final episode in this set... so I would kinda like to get it out of the way.
