Title: Movies of the '80s Marathon
Post by: addicted2dvd on April 22, 2010, 03:34:48 PM
Movies of the '80s Marathon
Time for a little Blast from the Past. This thread will be for my reviews of movies made in the '80s.  No matter the Genre, no matter if it was theatrically released or a TV Movie. Just as long as the movie was made in the '80s

When doing these Marathons I like to add a cartoon from the same decade between the movies. Unfortunately in this case IU have a load of movies from the '80s... but only a few sets of cartoons from the '80s! So I am hoping to fix that problem within my next few DVD orders. IF YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CARTOON FROM THE '80S I AM TAKING RECOMENDATIONS! But as I said... I do have a few sets here (or coming soon) that I will be able to use...

I use to watch the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. I may have to get that one.

What about The Smurfs?  For some reason I thought you had one of those.  I must be imagining things again.

Nope... I don't have any of The Smurf... but don't think I will either. I never cared for them. :P

I just realized I missed several boxsets while looking for moves from the '80s. And I found out that I missed 13 movies in the above list. I fixed the list... and now have 206 movies to choose from!

By the way, I am surprise to see you own this film...

Hope for you it isn't a cut version. Check the running time if it isn't 1h30 (or something near this) I'm not sure it really worth your time.

My Thoughts:
Since I recently watched Superman II... I thought I would start this marathon out with Superman III. I know a lot of people that don't like this movie what with the way they went with comedy for the movie. But I must say... I kind of enjoyed that for a change. Don't get me wrong... I enjoyed the first two more... but I thought it made for a nice change. And I like Richard Pryor... so that helped me too. And I don't think I would want to see another comedic look at Superman. I also enjoyed Anette O'Toole as Lana Lang in this movie. She of course went on to play Martha Kent in the TV Series Smallville. I also thought the whole Superman vs. Clark Kent fight was cool.

My Rating:

I know Jimmy... you don't agree with the above... oh well... too bad!  :tease: I see I already have 2 review up for it here... you can replace both of them with this one since it is much more detailed.

Hope for you it isn't a cut version. Check the running time if it isn't 1h30 (or something near this) I'm not sure it really worth your time.

I just checked in DVD Profiler... I can't remember if I did the profile for it myself or someone else... but it lists as 1:28.

I'm afraid to ask what you thought of Superman 4: The Quest for Peace.

Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show is an American  animated television series about a team of superheroes  which ran from 1984 to 1985 on ABC. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera and is based on the Justice League and associated comic book characters published by DC Comics.

The Bride of Darkseid (Part 1)
Season 1 - Episode 1
Firestorm makes his debut as a superhero and is invited to join the Super Friends. Darkseid pursues Wonder Woman to be his and is able to capture her when Firestorm accidentally shuts off the Hall of Justice's force field.

My Thoughts:
This was one of my favorite shows when I was young... all the variations of the Super Friends... but this one in particular as I always liked the character of Firestorm. And I still do... even though I am not quite sure why... because they really did make him too powerful. It was like he was the answer to most any problem they had. But even with that... he was always a favorite character of mine. And this pilot episode introduces him showing us what he can do (go through solid objects... change molecular structure of inanimate objects) and how he got his powers. All these years later I still enjoy this show a lot. The pilot is a 2 part episode... so I need to watch me another '80s movie soon so I can get to part 2!

The fourth one is better, Superman 3 isn't a Superman movie but a Richard Pryor movie. Of course Superman 4 isn't really good, and I'm very generous on this.

My Thoughts:
This is a movie I haven't seen in years. So many years in fact that I couldn't remember too much about it at all. I do however remember seeing this movie as a teenager. I was lucky that my mother was cool enough that she didn't worry much about what I was watching. If I came home with a bag full of movies from the video rentals... she would ask me what I got. And if I said some horror... she would say "Yuck... you are on your own with those... get me any Karate or War movies?" The movie is much shorter then I was expecting it to be... running at only an hour and 16 minutes. It has some decent killings in this one... and there is a nice amount of T&A for your viewing pleasure. Along with the names mentioned above there is a brief early appearance by Brinke Stevens. Over all I would say it is a good horror movie. I did enjoy it... I guess I would say it is good for what it is... as long as you don't go into it expecting a masterpiece I think you should enjoy it.  But it could have been better. Maybe flesh out the story some more. Possibly give the movie a little more length. But of course at the same time that could possibly make the movie worse as well.

My Rating:

That is true about the third one being a Richard Pryor movie.  And the one villain guy - I can't remember his name now - was just a Lex knock off.  The 4th movies sucks.

He is played by Robert Vaughn from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (http://www.amazon.com/Man-U-N-C-L-E-Complete-Robert-Vaughn/dp/B00005JM5Z/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1272046139&sr=1-4) (if you know this classic TV show). It was a great show from the sixties too bad the serie is way too costly for me :(

Season 1 - Episode 2
With her free will removed, Wonder Woman leads the Super Friends into a trap after they arrive at Darkseid's palace to save her.

My Thoughts:
This, of course, finishes off the pilot's storyline. I enjoyed this second part just as much as I did the first.

Title: A Nightmare on Elm Street

Director: Wes Craven
Rating: R
Length: 92 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: English: Dolby Digital: 5.1, English: Dolby Digital: Mono, Commentary: Dolby Digital: 2-Channel Stereo
Subtitles: English

Stars:
John Saxon
Ronee Blakley
Heather Langenkamp
Amanda Wyss
Nick Corri
Johnny Depp

Plot:
From modern horror master Wes Craven (Scream, Scream 2) comes a timeless shocker that remains the standard bearer for terror.

Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) is having grisly nightmares. Something monstrous wants to kill her. Meanwhile, her high-school friends, who are having the very same dream, are being slaughtered in their sleep by the hideous fiend of their shared nightmare. When the police ignore her explanation, she herself must confront the killer in his shadowy realm.

Featuring John Saxon (Enter The Dragon) and Johnny Depp in his first starring role and mind-bending special effects, this horror classic gave birth to one of the most infamous undead villains in cinematic history. Reportedly naming Freddy Krueger after a kid who had bullied him in school, writer-director Craven hatches a shock-fest from hell that "goes straight to the heart of terror" (Seattle Times).

My Thoughts:
The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has always been one of my favorite. And this first one always been my favorite in the franchise. Matter of fact... I would even say it is one of my favorite horror movies of all time! This has a couple actors in it that I am very familiar with. Of course there is a young Johnny Depp. And then there is Heather Langenkamp... who I remember well as one of the children on the sitcom Just the Ten of Us. While still sarcastic... in this one Freddy Krueger is played a bit more straight... as they didn't add as much comedy to the character as the later ones did. Though I do like the later ones as well.

Dungeons and Dragons
The general premise of the show is that a group of children are pulled into the "Realm of Dungeons & Dragons" by taking a magical dark ride trip on an amusement park roller coaster. Invariably, the children try to return home, but often take detours to help people, or find that their fates are intertwined with the fate of others.

The Night of No Tomorrow
Season 1 - Episode 1
The group finds Merlin, looking for a magic spell to get home Presto casts a spell only to release a horde of dragons attacking the nearby village.

My Thoughts:
This is a cartoon I used to watch back when I was a teen. I bought the DVD set for pure nostalgic reasons alone. When I saw the set so cheap I just couldn't help myself. The show is not as good as I remember it.. but it is entertaining enough and gives enough nostalgic value that it is worth the $9.86 I paid for the set. I never realized it when I was a kid... but it is now so obvious that the actor supplying the voice for Eric is none other then Donny Most (Ralph Mouth on Happy Days).

Stars:

Plot:
Five years have passed since Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was sent howling back to hell. But now, a new kid on Elm Street is being haunted every night by gruesome visions of the deadly dream stalker. And if his twisted soul takes possession of the boy's body, Freddy will return from the dead to wreak bloody murder and mayhem upon the entire town.

When A Nightmare on Elm Street made a killing, horror fans shrieked for more. Soon the diabolic Freddy was resurrected with a vengeance - along with some of the most terrifying special effects ever to splatter the screen. Look for Robert Englund minus his Freddy face in the opening sequence. He's a real scream!

My Thoughts:
Even though I do still feel this is a decent movie... it is my least favorite of the Elm Street movies. I can't even place my finger on what it is that I don't care for... just something about this one that didn't sit well with me. Freddy Krueger is still played pretty straight in this one. Hmmmm... makes me wonder if they didn't add the comedy to him because of the ratings/reviews that this one got.

You know when I see the comics you place in this thread I'm more than happy to haven't be a kid in the eighties. Those comics look so lame compare to what we had in the seventies... Sadly I have an eight years difference with my sister so I was forced to watch little girls cartoons like My Little Poney or The Calinours or Strawberry Shortcake :yucky:

Now we have almost one TV by person in a house, but in these time it were one TV in the house...

The Wrath of Brainiac
Season 1 - Episode 3
Brainiac  develops android duplicates of Superman and Wonder Woman in an attempt to seek revenge on the Superfriends.

My Thoughts:
Not bad episode. Darkseid continues his obsession with Wonder Woman. If I remember correctly this goes on for this entire incarnation of The Super Friends. At least in this one Firestorm wasn't the center of attention like he was the last 2 episodes.

My Thoughts:
This is another of my favorite "Nightmare" movies. I love all the things the kids learned they could do in their dreams. Plus this one has one of my favorite actresses in it... Patricia Arquette. I have been a fan of hers since the first time I saw her TV Series "Medium". This movie is the start of Freddy being more comical. Which I don't mind at all... but I do think I liked how he was in the first part better.

I'd say this one is my second favorite in the franchise as well. Always liked that scene with the marionette a lot  After this they started to get way sillier, at least until Final Nightmare and New Nightmare (the latter being my third favorite).

In the fall of 1985, the final version of Hanna-Barbera's Super Friends premiered. The Super Friends (now called the Super Powers Team) were once again headquartered at the Hall of Justice (which had been redesigned for this series to appear more dome-like and seemingly, larger) in Metropolis, and battled such familiar foes as Darkseid, Lex Luthor, and Scarecrow.

Except where noted as a short, each episode was 30 minutes long. The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians lasted only one season on ABC, marking the end of Hanna-Barbera's 12-year run of the Super Friends.

The Seeds of Doom
Season 1 - Episode 1
After single-handedly capturing Superman's perennial nemesis Lex Luthor, the bionic Cyborg is invited to join the Super Powers Team—but surprisingly turns down the offer. Anxious to have someone his own age as a fellow Team member, the nuclear-powered Firestorm seeks out Cyborg to learn the reason for his reticence. But it will take the intervention of Darkseid and his Parademons, to say nothing of some horrific-looking sea pods, to make Cyborg change his mind.

My Thoughts:
This latest version of Super Friends sees the addition of Cyborg. I liked how they handled him joining the team. He wasn't thrilled with the idea like Firestorm was. He wanted to live a normal life. In his case he joins out of necessity instead of desire. I also liked how he and firestorm works together. They compliment each other very well. Also got to see some old favorites that has not been in many of the other series... like Aquaman and Hawkman. Though they were not as prominently shown as some of the others.

But the only person in town with the courage to stop this lurking menace is a 13-year-old boy, confined to a wheelchair since birth. Adapted to the screen by suspense master Stephen King from his "Cycle of the Werewolf" novelette, this exhilarating thriller features astounding special effects by three-time Oscar® winner Carlo Rambaldi ("E.T.," "Alien," "King Kong").

My Thoughts:
I have loved it since I first saw it when I was just a teen. I absolutely love the supped up wheel chair... The Silver Bullet! I really enjoyed the scene when he first got it... finding out just how fast it went. I believe Stephen King's take on the werewolf legend is just right on the spot. And I liked who the werewolf turned out to be. While it is not what I would call a gory movie... there is a scene or two that shows it's fair share of blood. There was nothing about this movie that was not just plain enjoyable. It is definitely one of my favorite werewolf movies. Unfortunately this is just a bare bones DVD... no extras what so ever. I would have liked to at the very least seen the Theatrical Trailer on the disc. I imagine there will be many people that does not agree with the below rating... but what can I say... I just love this movie. And it is my rating... so there!  :tease:

Dungeons and Dragons
The general premise of the show is that a group of children are pulled into the "Realm of Dungeons & Dragons" by taking a magical dark ride trip on an amusement park roller coaster. Invariably, the children try to return home, but often take detours to help people, or find that their fates are intertwined with the fate of others.

The Eye of the Beholder
Season 1 - Episode 2
Dungeon Master decides to send the group on a quest to destroy an evil beholder who has ruined a landscape. Fortunately for the group, a knight named Sir John is in the vicinity and he may be able to assist them with their endeavor, though they discover that Sir John may not be as skilled as he had claimed he was.

My Thoughts:
OK... I enjoyed this episode a little more then the first one. Though this toon still isn't as good as I remembered it being. Funny thing though... it has been many years since I seen this cartoon. But from the moment I saw the character of Sir John I vividly remembered this episode. I must have seen this episode many times when I was a kid.

Mrs. Garrett and the girls travel to Paris, France. Mrs. Garrett will be tending a cook school, while the girls will be attending the sister school of Eastland. During their journey across the world, Mrs. Garrett has a hard time adjusting to the work, and her boss.

My Thoughts:
This is a TV Movie that came with The Facts of Life: The Complete Fourth Season. It originally aired just a few days before the fourth season. While this movie has a bit of a slow start... it picks up a bit once they get to Paris. Unfortunately it only picks up a little. There wasn't any real laughs in this movie. But I did still enjoy seeing the cast in different surroundings. I am sure I will watch the episodes more often then this movie... but I can see myself watching it every now and then.

Mr. T
Mister T was an animated series  that aired on NBC  from 1983 to 1986, with a total of 30 episodes  produced. Created by Ruby-Spears, the cartoon starred Mr. T as a coach to a gymnastics team, travelling the world while becoming involved in and solving various mysteries.

At the beginning of each episode, a live-action introduction featuring Mr. T himself is shown to explain what is going on. At the end of each episode, Mr. T narrates a moral lesson for the audience.

Mystery of the Golden Medallion
Season 1 - Episode 1
The gymnastics team welcomes a new member, while a mysterious group of men is stealing golden medallions to search for something hidden in one of them. The gymnastics team takes off to investigate things in San Francisco.

My Thoughts:
I remember seeing this cartoon back in the '8os... but what I couldn't remember is if it was any good or not. But I enjoyed it. It is an entertaining show. The quality of this print could have been better. There was some dust in the image here and there... as well as a bit of a shaky picture for a brief moment once or twice. But it was definitely watchable. If they were to release this series I would consider getting it if it was at a low enough price. But it isn't something I would rush out for.

Title: Beetlejuice: 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
Year: 1988
Director: Tim Burton
Rating: PG
Length: 92 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: English: Dolby Digital: 5.1, Spanish: Dolby Digital: 2-Channel Stereo, French: : , Music Only: Dolby Digital: 5.1
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Stars:
Alec Baldwin
Geena Davis
Annie McEnroe
Maurice Page
Hugo Stanger
Michael Keaton

Plot:
What's a Yuppie ghost couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) to do when their quaint New England home is overrun by trendy New Yorkers? Hire a freelance "bio-exorcist" to spook the intruders, of course. As directed by Tim Burton, Michael "Keaton's Beetlejuice is one of the biggest, baddest wolves a ghost movie has ever unleashed, a polter-gas" (The Village Voice). Keaton's work in this and Clean and Sober won him 1988's National Society of Film Critics Best Actor Award. Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones and Sylvia Sidney share starring honors along with wondrous production design, Harry Belafonte soundtrack tunes and Oscar®-winning Best Makeup.

Extras:
Scene Access
Feature Trailers
3 Episodes of Animated Beetlejuice series

My Thoughts:
I always found this movie to be a lot of fun. Geena Davis was great in the role. And even though I don't normally care for her... I also enjoyed Winona Ryder.  While this is a movie I like to watch a lot... so I am thrilled to have this Anniversary Deluxe Edition DVD. Though I am not sure that this release deserves such an edition. I mean how can you call this a deluxe edition? The fact that they added a few episodes of the animated series is cool... and then there is the theatrical trailer but where are the extras that more people want to see? There is no Commentary? What about a Featurette or two? Blooper Reel? Nope... we don't get none of that. Talk about a missed opportunity!  Oh well at least it is a movie I really enjoy... and there is a few episodes of the animated series... which I haven't seen any of in a very long time.

Beetlejuice
The premise of the animated series was greatly changed from the film, to the point where one only superficially resembled the other. In the film, Beetlejuice was the antagonist, who ended up nearly marrying a disgusted Lydia; in the series, they are best friends, and Lydia, something of a social misfit in the living world, frequently visits him in the afterlife during her free time.

Skeletons In the Closet
Season 1 - Episode 3
The skeletons in Beetlejuice's closet have accumulated so much over the years that the closet finally bursts. The skeletons drift astray, telling people the truths Beetlejuice had always hidden from them.

My Thoughts:
This series started in 1989... luckily for me one of the ones on the above dvd is from that season so I could add it to this marathon. This is the first time since they originally aired that I seen one of these episodes. And I must admit... even though it really is nothing like the movie... the show is a lot of fun. So much so that Britt and I decided to watch all 3 episodes that is on the above disc. This is one show I would definitely buy if it was ever released on DVD.

My Thoughts:
An anthology horror from the '80s that I somehow missed? How is that possible? I have always been a horror fan and Anthologies was always a favorite of mine. But yet somehow this is one I never seen before today. This movie is from that 100 movie boxset I recently got. I went into this one expecting to not be thrilled with it... as a quick look around the net on it beforehand showed it to be a pretty bad stinker. While I have seen worse... this one is pretty bad. First of all... story wise. In this case I enjoyed the wraparound story with God and the Devil bargaining with each other for the souls of the people in the stories to be more entertaining then the stories themselves. If I had to pick one... I would say the second (of the 3) stories was my favorite. The acting as well as the dialog definitely needed some work. The special effects wasn't worth much either. Whenever they showed some sort of creature they used claymation animation. One was for some sort of monstrous insect and the other for a demon. I came to expect a terrible transfer and sound from this 100 movie boxset. But in this case it definitely could have been worse. I mean it was bad... but it was certainly watchable. It felt like a decent VHS print after being viewed a couple dozen times. And that is actually better then some of them after glancing at a couple of the DVDs in this set.

Pete this one isn't a real anthology in the first place. They took a couple of film already made and re-edited them for this (wich probably had more or less as a result a lot of non-sense). I've seen only one of the complete films use in this and I've to agree the acting was awfull (not to say annoying...) in it. But the concept of the movie was kind of original and interesting (but badly render on the screen).

My old review of Cataclysm the film they used for the last story (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,695.msg69780.html#msg69780)

Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos is an American  animated television series from the 1980s. It originally aired in 1986 as a syndicated five episode mini-series. It was created by and starred Chuck Norris as himself, and produced by Ruby-Spears Productions. This fictionalized version of Norris is a United States government operative with a team of "radically diverse" warriors. The team includes Pepper, a technology expert and mechanic; Reed, Chuck's young apprentice and Pepper's brother; Kimo, a samurai; Tabe, a sumo champion; and Too Much, a young ward. Together, they fight against The Claw and his right-hand man, Super Ninja.

The series follows the framing device of Mr. T's animated series (also a Ruby-Spears production): At the beginning of each episode, a live action segment with Norris, usually at a gym or martial arts studio, is shown to explain what is going on. At the end of each episode, Norris narrates a moral lesson for the audience to learn.

Deadly Dolphin
Season 1 - Episode 1
Chuck Norris and his comrades are helping a scientist test some equipment that would permit people to convert water into oxygen in order to let people breathe underwater. However, when The Claw sends some of his men to kidnap the scientist in order to break into Sealab, Chuck Norris must divide his team in order to rescue the scientist and defend Sealab, as if The Claw gains control of Sealab, he will gain control of all the world’s oceans and he could wreck unspeakable havoc onto the world.

My Thoughts:
When I first read that this show was going to be included in the DVD set I really couldn't remember it at all. But as soon as I saw the intro on Youtube it came flooding back so yes I now remember watching this one. I think the main reason I didn't remember it is because it only lasted five episodes. Kind of strange to add something to a "Best of" dvd release when the show only lasted 5 episodes. But it is listed as just a miniseries so...

Watching it again today I found it to be an entertaining little action story. I could have done without the live-action Chuck Norris at the beginning and the end of the episode as it really did nothing but to remind you that the cartoon was geared more towards kids then adults. But the toon itself was entertaining. Knowing it only lasted for 5 episodes... it would have to be pretty cheap for me to buy a DVD release of the entire series. But I would if they released it cheap enough.

The Flintstone Kids was a 30-minute animated television series spin-off of The Flintstones which followed the adventures of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty  as children with their pet Dino.

It aired from 1986 to 1988 on ABC, and was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The series contained a total of 75 half-hour episodes, with 24 of them consisting of the "main" segment, The Flintstone Kids. The series also contained three additional segments:

    * Flintstone Funnies
    * Captain Caveman and Son
    * Dino's Dilemmas

The Bad News Brontos
Season 1 - Episode 5
Fred and the gang try to turn around the fortunes of their losing baseball team with a game against their fierce rivals.

My Thoughts:
While I liked The Flintstones... I was never that much for The Flintstone Kids... I remember that I used to just deal with this series only to watch the segments of Captain Caveman and Son... as I always enjoyed Captain Caveman back in the day. The Bad News Brontos is one of the main segments. It was entertaining enough... but still not something I feel like I can get into much.

This is an old favorite of mine when it comes to ghost movies. At the end of this movie there is a big paragraph or so talking about how this movie is based on a true story. I don't know if the events this movie was based on was debunked or not. I would say that this movie held up well for me.... though I did find it a little slower (and longer) then what I remembered. Try this one Pete, unless you want to post unsafe picture (read nudity). It does a good job for me.

I liked House on the Edge of the Park (which you have marked as not seen yet).

It's not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm a big fan of David Hess, and he's nutty as hell in it.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it.

will keep it in mind when I come back to this.  I watch my movies mostly on weekends. And this weekend I already have it taken with the Birthday stuff. :P
