I always find that being in a store and going through the selection manually is such a better experience than ordering online.
The last time I did that was more than a year ago and among other things I did end up with the FSK-18 version of Rambo, which of course wasn't uncut. So, no thanks.
Well yeah, there is that...
But browsing through a shop's collection occasionally has me buy stuff I would not have on my wish list because it's just not on the top of my mind. from above purchases that would clearly be
Pi
,
Boiling Point
and
Dead or Alive
and to some extent
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
. For me it's also different as I always order from the US, so shippingn charges are somewhat of an issue ot me and even more so the custom duties; therefore I always must limit single orders to $100, whereas in a brick and mortar store I can go wild

Nice purchase Dave. I actually found out one of my friends has Madlax so I borrowed it off him and started watching it today. It's okay so far, maybe not as good as Noir but I have still only watched the start.

The Thirteenth Floor
(1999)
R2-UK Sony/Columbia (2007)
I've got this only as a companion piece to Fassbinder's
Welt am Draht
(DE 1973, AKA World on Wire) of which it is a sort-of Hollywood remake. Both are based on the science fiction novel
Simulacron 3
, which dates even further back than the German movie; it was written 1964 by Daniel Galouye. Michael Ballhaus, who was the DP on
Welt am Draht
, is listed among the producers here, although that probably doesn't mean much, because so is Roland Emmerich.
Oh, and I just noticed that this is the first US movie I bought this year.

I remember seeing this some time ago; I can see who will "win" the comparison.
Doesn't this have Vincent D'Onofrio in it?

From what I read in the cover blurb of Welt am Draht, which I will order myself soon, the concept is slightly different though. Welt am Draht seems to have people unaware of their actual environment and then maybe slowly uncovering it and The Thriteenth Floor has the main character entirely aware of the situation and consciously heading into the virtual world.

I know that I've seen it too, but I can't remember anything of it.

I didn't read the description of Welt am Draht, as I still want to see, then again discussing this might spoil it nonetheless
Anyway, the dscription of Thirteenth Floor confirms what I said, so your comment should mean that Welt am Draht is actually quite similar to that setup...
(maybe just a simply Yes or No at this point to avoid further spoilering discussion
)

I suggest we drop it and discuss after having watched the movie(s).
